With FIFA today (Thursday) releasing the confirmed 23-man squads for the World Cup which commences in a week's time, there is set to be a record level of Chelsea participation in the tournament. There are 17 of our players selected, including Frank Lampard, whose Chelsea contract does not expire until the end of this month, and David Luiz. Although Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement for the transfer of the Brazilian, the move is still pending him agreeing personal terms with PSG and passing a medical examination. The 17 beats our previous highest number of players at a World Cup finals which was 15 in 2006 in Germany. The full list of Chelsea players for Brazil 2014 is: Belgium: Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku Brazil: David Luiz, Oscar, Ramires, Willian, Cameroon: Samuel Eto'o England: Gary Cahill, Frank Lampard Germany: Andre Schurrle Ghana: Christian Atsu Nigeria: John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Kenneth Omeruo Spain: Cesar Azpilicueta, Fernando Torres.
No club can come out and claim dat it parades the number of players dat Chelsea Football Club will be parading in the World Cup [1]Eden Hazard [2]Thorgan Hazard [3]Gary Cahill [4]John Terry [5]Peter Cech [6]Branislav Ivanovic [7]Azerpilietar [8]David Luiz [9]Oscar [10]Ramires [11]Willian [12]Andre Schurlle [13]Samuel Eto Fills [14]Fernando El Nino Torres [15]John Mikel Obi [16]Victor Moses [17]Romelu Lukaku [18]Thibaiet Curtois [19]Super Frank Lampard [20]kenneth Omeruo All dis Super Chelsea players and more are all going to the World Cup Whaoh, what a Superb Clup No wonder we are tagged “The Pride of London”
I tuned into my copy of the 2012 Champions League Final. You know, the one in which we beat Bayern Munich, in their own backyard, to win the trophy for the first time in our history. But one thing struck me, namely just how much the squad has changed. Take a look for yourselves:- Starting XI v Bayern • Petr CechJose Bosingwa (gone) • Gary Cahill • David Luiz (gone) • Ashley Cole (going) • John Obi MikelFrank Lampard (going) • Juan Mata (gone) • Ryan BertrandSalomon Kalou (gone) • Didier Drogba (gone) Subs v Bayern • Ross Turnbull (gone) • Paulo Ferreira (retired) • Michael Essien (gone) • Oriol RomeuFlorent Malouda (gone) • Daniel Sturridge (gone) • Fernando Torres Gone - 9 Retired - 1 Going - 2 Futures in doubt - Bertrand, Romeu, Mikel, Now that is some turnover considering the game was a little over 2 years ago! source : www.chelsea.vitalfootball.co.uk
The first reaction is that PSG overpaid wildly. David Luiz is five months older than Thiago Silva was when he made the move to Paris two years ago. For David Luiz to cost anywhere from $10 to $23 million more than his Selecao colleague, he would have to be a whole lot better. (There is some inflation in fees, but not to that degree.) Simply put, he's not. He's not even the same ZIP code. We're talking about a guy who could not beat Gary Cahill and John Terry to a starting spot in Chelsea's lineup. It's not a knock on Chelsea’s centre-backs; it's just a reflection on how the most expensive central defender in the world really ought to find playing time at his preferred position. Instead, he made just 15 Premier League starts, nearly half of them in central midfield. David Luiz is on his way to a new challenge in Paris. Nor is it a case of Jose Mourinho simply failing to appreciate David Luiz's talents. Mourinho's predecessor Rafa Benitez also shunted David Luiz into the middle of the park often. In Benit ...
Eleven Chelsea FC Players Make Bleacher Report’s Premier League Top 100...continued.. :: Agree or Disagree? Cahill comes in at Gary Cahill BR Rank: 5 Verdict: Perfect Gary Cahill is our No. 1 centre-back and No. 1 overall defender this season on the back of an excellent, largely error-free campaign. Aerially, he’s close to unbeatable, even handling the likes of Christian Benteke extremely well when asked to. On the ground he’s careful, doesn't dive in and gets his body in the way at the right times. No striker has clearly gotten the better of Cahill this season. Gary Cahill has somehow developed in to a world class centerback despite being brought in to Chelsea to be a third or fourth option in defense. In his debut season he could not take the centerback position from David Luiz but now his play has moved the Brazilian out of position and in to midfield. He is great in the air and has enough pace to keep up with any striker thrown at him. He has become the heir apparent for John Terry and again, is ...
David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres help Chelsea lead the way when it comes to World Cup squad selections By Joe Strange are set to send more players to the World Cup than any other club, with up to 18 stars from Jose Mourinho's side ready to descend on Brazil. The west London club have had two more players selected for provisional and final 23-man squads than rivals Manchester United, who have 16 stars potentially on their way to South America. Four of Chelsea's squad have been selected to represent the host nation by manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, with Oscar, Willian, Ramires and David Luiz all in line to play on home soil. The Blues also have England duo Frank Lampard and Gary Cahill, Spain pair Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta and Belgian stars Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Thiabaut Courtois all set for international action next month. The rest of Chelsea's World Cup contingent is made up of Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o, Germany's Andre Schurrle, Nigeria's John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Ken ...
Team given- Chelsea by Adam Wallworth Do I like them- not a massive fan but can play some nice football on there day. Best player- Edin Hazard great skills and ability with a clinical finish in front of goal makes him hard to defend and a massive threat to any opposition. Worst player- Fernando Torres moved on a big money transfer yet has never really produced the same performances he had at Liverpool. Most overrated- David Luiz apart from his wicked shot on set pieces he is really not the best player. Can't defend and always pushes forward to leave you a man down at the back. Most underrated- Gary Cahill by far the best centre back at the club solid reliable and pops up on set pieces to score goals but will never get any recognition while John Terry is still around. Possible future Chelsea captain. Like this and I will give you a team

They Wrote us off! They rubbed us! They helped them! Yet, dy wr all disappointed. would like to remind the Liverpool fans and the rest of the football world that this afternoon Chelsea had the following players out for one reason or another or dropped to the bench: Petr Cech, John Terry, David Luiz, Ramires, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Samuel Eto'o, Willian and Gary Cahill and we still went to Anfield and did a job, shut them out and picked up three points. I stated to you all this week that you should never underestimate Jose Mourinho and his influence. Whether that is with the press and media or with his tactical approach to games, do not write him or Chelsea off. This is a results business and you should know by now not to virtually celebrate becoming Champions before you actually meet Chelsea fc! Apart from Gary Neville, you were a disgrace and you should never have underestimated Chelsea in this fixture in the first place.
HOW DO YOU KNOW CHAMPIONS? Champions beat all the top teams! Man U were beaten, so as Tottenham. Arsenal were disgraced 6-0. Man City were beaten home and away. The so-called impressive Liverpool walked ALONE both at Stamford Bridge and Anfield. With a Chelsea Team without Eden Hazard, Petr Čech, Oscar, John Terry, David Luiz, Ramires, Samuel Eto'o; Gary Cahill, Willian and Fernando 9 Torres all sub, yet Liverpool were destroyed at their so-called Anfield. Since last weekend, Liverpool players have been resting and planning for this game, but Chelsea traveled to Spain and played Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, came back and traveled again to Liverpool with Team B and thrashed these title pretenders 2-0 at their home. What more can I say? Liverpool lack all the qualities of champions. You can only find these qualities in Chelsea F.C.!
Things i learned about my blue team yesterday: 1) We can very much play, perform and win without. Hazard. its just that when he plays he the quality of the games increases 10 fold. 2) The three striker formation can be used. Note this was one of the reasons behind Mou's success at Chelsea during his first reign. 3) Ivanovic is like a tank that can run just as fast as he can defend. 4) Azpilicueta is pure class and we might have found a replacement for the aging Ashley Cole. 5) Gary Cahill and John Terry are like brick walls. nothing but respect for their performances. 6) David Luiz is definitely growing up and is taking up responsibilities. 7) Torress can very much play. *** of of way to shut up his haters like a said before. he performs when his team needs him the most. 8) The Schurre is one *** of a player. and he is and william along with oscar hazard and salah are going to rip defensive walls apart next season. 9) Petr Cech grows everygame. wiser every game. i wonder how much he worked to make that .. ...
TEAM NEWS: CHELSEA V Stoke City Jose Mourinho gives a rest to Eden Hazard and with Oscar also on the bench, there is a full debut for Mohamed Salah. Fernando Torresis centre-forward and with Ramires unavailable as he completes a three-match suspension, Nemanja Matic returns to the midfield having been ineligible for the Champions League. Frank Lampard also starts with David Luiz making way. The defence is unchanged for the 10thgame. Chelsea are expected to line up in the following 4-2-3-1 formation: 1 Petr Cech; 2 Branislav Ivanovic, 24 Gary Cahill, 26 John Terry(c), 28 Cesar Azpilicueta; 8 Frank Lampard, 21 Nemanja Matic; 14 Andre Schurrle, 22 Willian, 15 Mohamed Salah; 9 Fernando Torres. For Chelsea fans, this is a summary of what went wrong with PSG tonight. Michael Cox, editor of football website Zonal Marking, on the BBC: "The amazing thing was how vulnerable Chelsea were to crosses - considering they effectively had four centre backs (Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry and David Luiz) in the side. PSG are not really a crossing side, I don't think it was the particular approach PSG went for tonight but Chelsea just defended them very badly. "I think Lucas Moura will come into the PSG side for the second leg, he normally comes on as a sub but if he starts that will make PSG more counter-attacking and with Ezequiel Lavezzi's pace, they will be even more dangerous on the break. "Chelsea will need to force the issue and that could be dangerous. PSG could cause them problems. Javier Pastore hasn't really taken off for PSG - he likes to take on opponents and that third goal tonight is probably his greatest contribution since moving to PSG."
Blues boss Jose Mourinho has used the 26 year old Brazilian sparingly this term and his display against Crystal Palace has apparently convinced him to sell the former Benfica man. Chelsea are confident of winning the race to sign £45m rated Atletico Madrid star Costa and will look to bank £35m from the sale of Luiz to help cover the lion’s share of the cost. Mourinho ‘hauled’ off Luiz at half-time during the club’s surprise defeat to Crystal Palace and that may well prove his last Premier League run-out in Chelsea colours. Luiz is however expected to face PSG this week due to first choice midfielder Nemanja Matic being cup-tied. PSG and Barcelona are both thought to be keen on Luiz and both sides see the player as an option to be used at centre-back, where he is seemingly no longer required at Chelsea with Mourinho seeing Gary Cahill and John Terry as his first choice pairing. David Luiz was pivotal in Chelsea’s Champions League and Europa League triumph but doesn’t appear to be a key part o ...
INTERNATIONAL CALL-UPS: WHO IS AWAY? Posted on: Tue 04 Mar 2014 As always, there is plenty of Chelsea representation for the last round of international games before the World Cup squads are announced. Those players whose countries have qualified for Brazil will be hoping to impress their national team managers on Wednesday, while for some of our younger players competitive action awaits. England host Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday evening, with Frank Lampard, Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole all in Roy Hodgson's squad for the game. It is the final time the Three Lions will take to the pitch before the England boss names his provisional squad in mid-May, with the final 23 set to be announced after the friendly with Peru on 30 May. All four of our Brazilians - Ramires, Oscar, David Luiz and Willian - have been selected in Luiz Felipe Scolari's squad for a friendly with South Africa in Johannesburg on Wednesday. It is expected to be the Selação's final game away from home soil before the challenge of winning ...
A squad of 21 players is travelling from London to Istanbul today (Monday) ahead of Wednesday's Champions League Round of 16 first- leg match. David Luiz and John Mikel Obi are both included. They missed Saturday's win over Everton due to injury and Oscar also travels. Jose Mourinho reported after Saturday's game that the Brazilian attacking midfielder, who was substituted at half-time, had discomfort in his ankle. Henrique Hilario is the third goalkeeper having been added, along with Tomas Kalas , to the Champions League squad A-List for the knockout phase. Nathan Ake is the one young player from the B-List travelling. January signings Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah cannot play for Chelsea in the Champions League this season having appeared in the group stage for their former clubs. The full squad is: Petr Cech , Mark Schwarzer , Henrique Hilario , John Terry , Gary Cahill , David Luiz , Ashley Cole , Cesar Azpilicueta , Branislav Ivanovic , Tomas Kalas , Nathan Ake, Frank Lampard , John Mikel Obi , Ram ...
Media watch Liverpool have set their sights on Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire, according to reports. The Daily Mail claims Reds scout Neil Richardson was in attendance to watch the 20-year-old at Bramall Lane as the Blades secured a famous 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup. Other Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in the young defender though, with Chelsea and Manchester United said to have watched the Sky Bet League One centre back in action. Indeed, reports at the start of the month claimed Chelsea had 'ramped-up' their interest in the player, who has been dubbed 'the new John Terry'. Metro went on to claim that Blues boss Jose Mourinho has been kept updated over his progress in Yorkshire, and that a £5million offer could be made to bring the player to Stamford Bridge. Maguire would be tasked with emulating Terry if he were to sign for Chelsea, although first team opportunities would be hard to come by with the likes of David Luiz and Gary Cahill also in the squad. L ...
TIME TO CHOOSE A NEW CHELSEA CAPTAIN??. Let’s get straight to the point – John Terry won’t go on forever. His absence in Chelsea’s last 3 matches has proved that. The Blues captain is 33&has been suffering an increasing number of injuries as the years have worn on,thanks mainly to his crucial body-on-the-line approach to defending. Terry has,at best, another year or 2 in his locker – &that’s assuming he’s offered a deal beyond the end of this season. But Jose Mourinho knows Terry’s limitations,he must do. And in terms of central defensive numbers, the Blues are fairly well catered for in Gary Cahill,David Luiz,Branislav Ivanovic&youngsters such as Kurt Zouma,Tomas Kalas,Kenneth Omeruo&Andreas Christensen. Bodies aren’t the problem, however. The area in which Chelsea will fall drastically short when Terry’s retirement finally comes is the role of ‘captain, leader, legend’. Yes,Terry’s had his shortcomings in his career, but there’s absolutely no doubting his leadership qualities on ...
David Luiz future not certain With Jose Mourinho prefering John Terry and Gary Cahill partnership and Kurt Zouma coming in the summer,a big money recieve could force Luiz out of Chelsea The Brazilian performance this season in the defence has not been good and PSG and Barcelona are battling for his signature
MANCITY VS CHELSEA TACTICAL BRIEF The pattern in previous rounds of this competition has been that Jose Mourinho has rested a few of the players who have played the most. In the previous round's win against Stoke City he made five changes. In came Mark Schwarzer for Petr Cech , Ashley Cole for Cesar Azpilicueta , Frank Lampard and second-debutant Nemanja Matic for John Mikel Obi and John Terry (replaced at the back by David Luiz ), and Andre Schurrle for Ramires . This time around Terry, who has missed his first Premier League minutes of the season in the last week, is out. Gary Cahill limped away from the disappointing draw at the Hawthorns on Tuesday so his fitness is being assessed ahead of this game. Branislav Ivanovic is a possibility to play centre-back with Cole and Azpilicueta as full- backs. Manuel Pellegrini also has factors to contend with. The postponement of the home game against Sunderland meant a free week for his team, though the fixture will have to be crammed into their busy schedule at ...
Chelsea has submitted their roster to the FA (for the remaining season) as followed: Developed Abroad- Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian, Andre Schurrle, John Obi Mikel, Nemanja Matic, Ramires, Cesar Azpilicueta, Branislav Ivanovic, David Luiz, Petr Cech, Mark Schwarzer, Henrique Hilario Homegrown Players- John Terry, Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill, Frank Lampard You'll note that the Blues have only named 20 players to the squad, potentially leaving themselves rather short should any injuries arise. Luckily, domestic rules allow for the club to use any player who still qualifies as a U21. That leaves them plenty of options to choose from, with the following six players being notable: Under 21 Mohamed Salah, Tomas Kalas, Marco van Ginkel, Nathan Ake, Lewis Baker, Jamal Blackman Note: Out of the 25 places available on the roster 8 places are reserved for homegrown players,if the Club does not have that many HG players then these spots ( the remaining ones) on the roster are to b ...

layer Ratings: Manchester City vs Chelsea Chelsea Petr Cech – 7 – Had a shaky start to the game in the first 20 seconds but apart from that he did nothing wrong and made some good saves to secure the points for his team. Branislav Ivanovic – 7 – A solid performance from Ivanovic whose fantastic goal won the game for his team. He was effective going forward and defending. John Terry – 8 – Yet another great performance from the leader of what is currently the league’s best defence. Cleared almost everything that came his way. Gary Cahill – 8 – Cahill was excellent alongside Terry and was very unlucky not to score in the second half. The Englishman was as solid as ever this season. Cesar Azpilicueta – 7 – Put in a fantastic display against one of the league’s quickest wingers. The makeshift left-back was also very disciplined in his staying in a defensive position. David Luiz – 7 – A great display from Luiz in defensive midfield. Made sure that Silva got no space in the centre of ...
MATCH REPORT: Manchester City 0 CHELSEA 1 04-02-2014 Summary A mighty performance earned a huge win in Manchester on Monday night with Branislav Ivanovic 's sweet first-half strike separating these two title challengers. Until this game City had been behind at home for only eight minutes during this league season but with Jose Mourinho 's game plan working well, we not only ended their 100 per cent record, we also became the first team to stop them scoring on home soil. There could have been more goals too for the visitors, with Samuel Eto'o , Nemanja Matic and Gary Cahill all hitting woodwork, and when City did strike on target, Petr Cech was equal to their best efforts. Team News The defence was unchanged from the draw at home to West Ham and Samuel Eto'o led the attack for the fourth game running, but there were changes in midfield. The height of David Luiz and Nemanja Matic were paired in the centre and ahead of them, Ramires was played wide on the right with Eden Hazard on the left and Willian the mo ...

Stamford Bridge side could sell Brazilian. Chelsea are reportedly ready to allow David Luiz move to Barcelona so long as any offer from the Catalan club meets their valuation of the Brazilian according to Goal.com. Read more Chelsea transfer news. Indeed Jose Mourinho has already set his sights on Saint-Etienne youngster Kurt Zouma as a replacement for the 26 year old Blues fan favourite. Barcelona have been tracking Luiz for some months and are ready to renew their interest as Gerardo Martino looks to strengthen his Nou Camp defensive options, which currently only includes to senior central defenders in the form of Gerard Pique and veteran Carles Puyol, with Javier Mascherano being called upon to fill a makeshift role and Marc Bartra on hand to offer support. Luiz has impressed in recent weeks though has only started eight of Chelsea's 20 Premier League fixtures and is seemingly behind Gary Cahill in the pecking order with Mourinho favouring the England international as partner to ever present veteran Jo ...
MATCH REPORT: ARSENAL 0 CHELSEA 0 = Summary The Blues return from north London with a well-earned point following a 0-0 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates. In a game shorn of many clear-cut opportunities, Frank Lampard went closest to scoring the decisive goal midway through the first half when he raced on to an Eden Hazard chip and smashed his volley against the bar. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with the defensive players on both sides coming out on top, although Olivier Giroud went close twice late on for Arsenal. A first clean sheet in the league since the 3-0 win at West Ham is most welcome, while for Petr Cech it was his 150th Premier League shut out, and attention now turns to two successive home games, starting with the visit of Swansea City on Boxing Day. Team news Jose Mourinho made three changes from the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace just over a week ago. Gary Cahill returned to partner Captain John Terry in central defence, with David Luiz dropping down to the bench. Wi ...

Adel Taarabt never fulfilled his potential at Tottenham but the midfielder wants to prove he is a "great" player under new Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen. Arsene Wenger has shrugged off claims by 'Match of the Day' pundits Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer that Arsenal will fail to win this season's Premier League title. Mourinho willing to let Chelsea star leave for Bayern Munich in £41m January transfer The Portuguese boss is open to allowing Luiz to transfer to Germany. Chelsea defender David Luiz is the subject of interest from German giants Bayern Munich and Jose Mourinho is willing to let the Brazilian leave in January for £41m, reports A Bola. The 26-year-old was one of the Blues best players last season, but Mourinho has concerns over Luiz’s defensive capabilities and has generally preferred a partnership of Gary Cahill and Captain John Terry. This lack of game time is frustrating for the South American and the chance to switch to the Allianz Arena would be a prospect most players would find difficult to turn down. Bayern are currently a treble-winning club after securing the Bundesliga title, German Cup and Champions League in 2012/13. Since then maverick coach Pep Guardiola has also taken over as manager and the Spaniard is a great draw for top players. Luiz would also be able to link up with fellow Brazilia ...
Bayern Munich are interested in signing out-of-favour Chelsea defender David Luiz, according to the Metro. The Brazilian international, who is currently side-lined with a knee injury, has featured in just eleven of the Blues twenty-one competitive games this season with Gary Cahill and John Terry proving to be Jose Mourinho’s preferred defensive partnership. Luiz was linked with a move to Barcelona during the summer, and his future at Stamford Bridge has been thrown into doubt once more with the German and European Champions ready to make a move in an attempt to secure his services. The 26 year old has thirty-three international caps, and may welcome a move as he looks to be certain of a place in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad in his native Brazil next summer.
Jose Mourinho will expect Chelsea to revive their Premier League title challenge away to London rivals West Ham United on Saturday after their recent dip in form. Mourinho's men narrowly escaped a second successive league defeat immediately before the international break when a controversial penalty deep into stoppage time secured a 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion. The debate surrounding Ramires's tumble that won the spot-kick has continued and diverted attention away from Chelsea's underwhelming display which followed an even more lacklustre effort in a defeat at Newcastle. Now Chelsea, currently four points behind leaders Arsenal, will attempt to rediscover their form at Upton Park against a West Ham side desperate for points following a disappointing start to the season that has left them on the fringes of the relegation zone. Blues defender David Luiz was one of the players who paid the price for the recent results, dropping out of the side for the last two matches. Gary Cahill stepped into the tea ...
Chelsea are inviting January offers for David Luiz. The Mail on Sunday says Luiz was axed for the midweek Champions League win over Schalke and was left on the bench again for the 2-2 draw with West Brom on Saturday, with John Terry and Gary Cahill the preferred and first-choice pairing. The 26-year-old is hugely popular with the fans but some of the Chelsea players have started to agree with manager Jose Mourinho’s belief the player is too casual and showy. For all his talent, Mourinho feels the rugged edge he likes from his central defenders is missing and he doesn’t see Luiz as an option in midfield.
Eto'o too sharp for Schalke. A Timo Hildebrand howler helped Samuel Eto'o set Chelsea on their way to a 3-0 Champions League home win over Schalke on Wednesday night. The Cameroon striker scored his first goal in Europe for the Blues on 31 minutes after a bad mistake from visiting goalkeeper Hildebrand, and fired in a second nine minutes after the break. There was time for Eto'o's replacement Demba Ba to get on the scoresheet too seven minutes from time as Chelsea took control of Group E by matching their margin of victory in Gelsenkirchen on Matchday Three. Following Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle, Blues boss Jose Mourinho made six changes to his starting line-up. Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Andre Schurrle, John Obi Mikel, Willian and Eto'o came in, with David Luiz, Ashley Cole, Juan Mata and Frank Lampard dropping to the bench. Fernando Torres was missing with a leg injury, but there was some confusion over why Eden Hazard was left out of the matchday 18. Before kick-off, Mourinho ...
The winning run came to an end on a wet, grey day on Tyneside when after a first half in which the woodwork denied Chelsea a deserved lead, a much-improved performance by Newcastle after the break yielded goals for the first half. Yoan Gouffran, from a set-piece, and Loic Remy, in open play as Jose Mourinho's men pushed for an equaliser, did the damage, denying the Blues the chance to move to the top of the table and inflicting our second league defeat. There were two changes from the side that had beaten Man City in the league outing last Sunday. David Luiz came back in for Gary Cahill who had started the last three games and Juan Mata, a scorer against Arsenal, was preferred to Andre Schurrle. Newcastle made two changes too from their last league game, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa came into central defence and Shola Ameobi replaced Hatem Ben Arfa in attack. The first 45 minutes of this Saturday lunchtime game suggested anything but a Newcastle win and Chelsea will be asking why the possession enjoyed in first half ...
THE TEAM THAT DID THE DAMAGE As promised, Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes to the Chelsea team, with only Gary Cahill retaining his place from the side that beat Manchester City a little over 48 hours ago. That meant a second Chelsea start for Mark Schwarzer between the sticks, with Cahill joined by Azpilicueta, David Luiz and Ryan Bertrand at the back. John Mikel Obi and skipper Michael Essien gave an African flavour to the central midfield positions, while Eto'o was chosen to lead the line ahead of an attacking trio of Mata, Willian and Kevin De Bruyne. Arsene Wenger made eight changes from his side's win at Crystal Palace on Saturday, but it was still a strong-looking team with Laurent Koscielny, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla all selected.

PRE-MATCH BRIEFING: CHELSEA V Manchester City - TACTICAL BRIEF The second meanest defence in the Barclays Premier League, Chelsea's, faces top scorers Manchester City on Sunday. Both clubs are in their hottest form of the season so far. The Pensioners' attack may find opportunities against a shaky City rearguard but the defence will face a far sterner test than against Schalke. The visitors' attacking resources are among the best and most creative in Europe. There might be a case for the pace, drive and anticipation of David Luiz ahead of Gary Cahill, especially if the Brazilian has learned from his Cardiff error. He also knows how to score against Mancunians. In Germany midweek, Ryan Bertrand remained on the bench as Cesar Azpilicueta, a right-footer, was rewarded for his bright cameo against the Welsh with a start in place of injured Ashley Cole. With Cole now fit, the most senior of the full-backs is expected to return. Mourinho has the luxury of in-form strikers. With Demba Ba likely perhaps to start ...
Met and got & pics with Chelsea FC ...players of note David Luiz, Gary Cahill and John Terry
John Terry has been in superb form for Chelsea this season - but is he currently the best performing English centre-back in the Premier League? Terry boasts the joint second best defensive record in terms of Performance Score in the Premier League this season (319 points). At present he is keeping Gary Cahill out of the Chelsea team, a player who has become one of England's two starting defenders along with Phil Jagielka. The Chelsea skipper was in typically good form with his display against Cardiff at the weeken - a game that barring a David Luiz error, Chelsea would have kept a clean sheet in. Terry won three out of three headers and also made 11 out of 11 clearances, as we can see below. Not only was he good at clearing danger but he was also very effective on the ball, completing 98% of his passes (82 out of 84): It is in this aspect of his game that Terry probably doesn't get enough credit: he is a very good technical player, despite not really being regarded as a ball playing centre-back. Eight of ...
Having partnered both David Luiz and Gary Cahill, Terry praised the abilities of both players, acknowledging the strength in depth at the club. 'They're both great centre-halves, we've seen in Gaz how he's grown since he arrived at Chelsea, and he's kicked on for England as well, what him and Jags [Phil Jagielka] are doing there is great,' said Terry. 'He's great on the ball and in the air and scores a lot of goals as well. 'David's got great ability as well as a player, he reads the game very well, he's great with both feet, he can find a pass and also scores some brilliant goals. 'What they both give us is pure quality, hence the reason they're at Chelsea. For the three of us, we understand the competition's there, we obviously get on, but we realise only two can play. 'We push each other, like I did when it was those two last year, and it's down to other players to push hard and get in the team, but at the same time it's down to myself and David, if we're playing, to maintain it and keep our shirt.'
Jose Mourinho on Gary Cahill: "But at this moment John Terry & David Luiz are playing well and giving stability." (Mail)"
Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins believes Roy Hodgson should recall John Terry to the England squad. The Blues captain retired from international football in September 2012 ahead of being found guilty of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand, with the centre-back calling his position with the Three Lions "untenable". Gary Cahill is currently first choice under Hodgson, but Wilkins feels that with the defender struggling for starts at Chelsea, the England boss should look to Terry. "Gary Cahill hasn't been in the starting line-up for Chelsea and I think Jose [Mourinho] prefers David Luiz and John Terry, who Roy should have a little chat with because he was absolutely superb yesterday against Cardiff," Wilkins told BBC Radio 5 Live's 'Sportsweek'. "I don't think we are blessed with too many centre-halves and if we could persuade John to have another go, we should. "I have no idea [if he would be interested in an England return] because I haven't had the conversation with him. But it certainly would b ...
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admits that Gary Cahill faces a fight to dislodge John Terry and David Luiz in central defence at Stamford Bridge this season.
Jose Mourinho has made it clear that despite Gary Cahill's international form, John Terry and David Luiz remain...
CHELSEA: INTERNATIONAL ROUND UP BELGIUM: Lukaku scored twice and Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois starred in Belgium's World Cup qualifying match against Croatia. Kevin De Bruyne also started the match before being subsituted around the hour mark. CZECH REPUBLIC: Petr Cech captained the Czech's in their 4-1 win over Malta. Petr Cech did concede a goal, it wasn't his fault. Cech and the Czech face an unvertainty towards qualification. GERMANY: Germany's number 9, Andre Schurrle scored the second goal that sent Ze German's to Brazil. Schurrle scored a beauty and he continues to impress one and all. ENGLAND: Frank Lampard and Gary Cahill played for the 3 Lions. Ashley Cole did not play because of injury. SPAIN: Juan Mata was an unused substitute for the World Champions. SERBIA: Branislav Ivanovic led the Serbs in a 2-0 friendly win against Japan. BRAZIL: David Luiz captained Brazil in their friendly 2-0 win over South Korea. Luiz was involved a lot in the game and Ramires also saw action. Oscar was the star ...
Mourinho will miss Fernando Torres for this tie through suspension and injury. The Spaniard was given marching orders against Spurs, after picking up two yellow cards. Also, he got injured in the last match while playing against Steaua Bucharest in the mid-week. So, expect, Samuel Eto’o to lead the forward line against the Canaries. In the defence, David Luiz has been impressive in his last two games and the Brazilian will continue to keep his place. He will be partnered by either Gary Cahill or John Terry. In the midfielde, Mourinho must make a choice to field John Obi Mikel alongside Ramires and to carry on with Ramires and Frank Lampard combo. The Portuguese might give Lampard a rest or could use him from the bench. Eden Hazard has returned to training after missing out the last game and should be in contention to play on the flanks along with Oscar and Mata. CL
Proof Chelsea Football Club really aren't a young team Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at home to FC Basel last night was inexcusable for many Blues supporters, but Jose Mourinho wasted little time in offering up his own explanation. The Portuguese coach said that "emotionally, this [Chelsea] is not a very mature team", suggesting that the youthful presence in the current Blues outfit could be the reason for its downfall and continuing his theme of emphasising the lack of experience possessed by his "young eggs". That doesn’t really ring true however if we compare the average age of last night’s side to the best side in Europe. Chelsea’s starting 11 against Basel was comprised of the following players, with their age denoted in brackets: Petr Cech (31), Branislav Ivanovic (29), Ashley Cole (32), David Luiz (26), Gary Cahill (27), Frank Lampard (35), Oscar (22), Marco van Ginkel (20), Eden Hazard (22), Willian (25), and Samuel Eto’o (32). Even at a glance, it's clear Chelsea's team isn't particularly young. ...
Inter are down to 10 men after Hugo Campagnaro's red card. David Luiz and Demba Ba are on for Chelsea, replacing Gary Cahill and Romelu Lukaku. Still 2-0 to the Blues!
I'd loved to put David Luiz or Gary Cahill but I don't think they would be the first choice CB's this season.
Check it out-so amazing Here is what each player at Chelsea is earning: Eden Hazard - £185,000 Fernando Torres - £175,000 John Terry - £175,000 Frank Lampard - £140,000 Ashley Cole - £120,000 Petr Cech - £100,000 Gary Cahill - £80,000 David Luiz - £75,000 John Obi Mikel - £75,000 Juan Mata - £67,000 Ramires - £55,000 Oscar - £40,000 Ryan Bertrand - £40,000 Marko Marin - £35,000 Cesar Azpilicueta - £30,000 Victor Moses - £30,000 Branislav Ivanovic - £28,500 Oriol Romeu - £15,000 This is an accurate payroll from an undisclosed source . What does everyone think about these figures then? Who is overpaid, who is underpaid, who is justifying their money and how much more ridiculous will wages get??? Whoa, the rumours were true, Hazard is on crazy money. I just wrote a blog on how I was happy with Hazard’s form, but I think a player at his age who is new to the club should never earn that amount of money. It’s easy to pull your hair out when you look at Torres’ wages too. A reason t ...
Chelsea set to beat Man Utd to the signature of £30 Million rated defender Manchester United could lose out on Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala as new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho draws up a bid for the centre-back. New United manager David Moyes is on holiday and with chief executive David Gill also packing his bags at Old Trafford, their transfer business remains unattended and the cheeky Blues manager will be keen on securing Mangala’s signature before the Red Devils spring into action. Moyes has every reason to be worried about Chelsea’s approach for Mangala since United too desperately need long-term central defensive reinforcements, with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic likely to retire within a few years. Mourinho, on the other hand, wants to challenge the existing unit of Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, David Luiz and Gary Cahill as he sets out to tackle the weight of expectations next season. The Mirror revealed that Porto are demanding a £30 million fee for Mangala and Chelsea plan to open the ...
Chelsea have stolen ahead in the race to sign Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala – with new Manchester United boss David Moyes on holiday, writes the Sunday People's Steve Bates . Now Sir Alex Ferguson has gone and chief executive David Gill is clearing his desk, no one is holding the fort at Old Trafford in the absence of Moyes. That has given Chelsea the edge as they bid to sign the 22-year-old France defender. Mangala was tracked by incoming Blues manager Jose Mourinho while he was in charge at Real Madrid. And Mourinho’s interest has increased now he is back at Stamford Bridge as he looks to put pressure on centre-backs David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry. He believes the defence needs a revamp and is impressed by Mangala’s speed and strength.
Benfica v Chelsea: Player ratings Petr Cech: Did brilliantly to tip over Oscar Cardozo's looping volley but could do little to stop the striker's bullet penalty. 8/10. Cesar Azpilicueta: Silly decision to leave his arm out-stretched in the box, giving the referee no option but to award Benfica their penalty. 6. Branislav Ivanovic: The least calm of Chelsea's two centre-backs, but excelled at the other end, heading in the winner expertly in injury time. 8. Gary Cahill: Recovered from a nervous start to lead Chelsea's back four admirably. Always calm under pressure and did just enough to stop Cardozo scoring in the first half. 8. Ashley Cole: Put in a crucial block to stop Eduardo Salvio after 11 minutes, but otherwise had a relatively quiet night. 7. David Luiz: Did not take to his midfield role as well as he has done in recent weeks. Passing awry early on. 6. Frank Lampard: Rattled the bar with three minutes to go and also drew a world-class save from Artur in the first half. 8. Ramires: Failed to live up ...
John Terry is not fit to play so Gary Cahill will partner Branislav Ivanovic in central defence. David Luiz plays alongside Frank Lampard in the centre of midfield with Ramires, who like David Luiz is playing against his former club, in a wide right position. It is the Brazilian's 150th Chelsea game. Oscar is on the left and Fernando Torres leads the attack. John Mikel Obi returns from injury to be on the substitutes' bench. For Benfica, Andre Almeida moves from left-back to replace suspended Ma
David Luiz & Gary Cahill are underrated. Ramires & Mikel as well.
Gary Cahill: David Luiz could be perfect defensive midfielder
Defenders would be.. CBs Gary Cahill and Terry. RB Azplicueta and LB David Luiz.
CHELSEA PICS: David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Fernando Torres, and Oscar in the new kit.
Is Gary Cahill injured? David Luiz is such a risk... Always feel Aguero and Tevez can nip past him.
...includes David Luiz and Gary Cahill is nonsense
PROBABLE LINEUPS CHELSEA Cech Azpilicueta, Luiz, Terry, Cole Ramires, Mikel Oscar, Mata, Hazard Ba Manchester United De Gea Jones, Evans, Ferdinand, Evra Cleverley, Giggs Welbeck, Rooney, Nani Chicharito Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Ashley Cole, David Luiz, Ramires and Demba Ba should all return to Rafa Benitez's starting line-up after missing Chelsea's league defeat at Southampton on Saturday. The Chelsea boss could make around six changes to his side ahead of a run of five games in the next 13 days. Gary Cahill (knee) is a doubt so John Terry is likely to continue in defence alongside Luiz. With Ba cup-tied for the Blues in the Europa League, the Senegalese should be handed a start on Monday. Mata should return to the side after missing the match at St Mary's with illness. Sir Alex Ferguson is also likely to make several changes to his side after rotating the team in the weekend win at Sunderland. Phil Jones could return to the side at right-back after Rafael (groin) was forced off at the weekend. Tom Clever ...
Despite almost scoring an own goal, David Luiz was arguably the best Chelsea player in the first half. Gary Cahill on the other hand...
FA CUP QUATERS::: VENUE: Old Trafford K.O: 4:30 pm GMT Probable line up for Chelsea: Peter Cech is the No.1 and in front of him in central-defense, any two of David Luiz, Gary Cahill, John Terry, or Branislav Ivanovic are possible. At right-back, the latter is in contention to start as is Cesar Azpilicueta. At left-back, Ashely Cole is expected to start. In Benitez's 4-2-3-1, two of Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel, Ramires or Luiz are anticipated. In the attacking midfield line, playmakers Juan Mata, Oscar, and Eden Hazard are usually the first three considered but two of them could be complimented by the more defensively stable Ramires or Ryan Bertrand in the wide areas. Victor Moses is also a more direct option out wide. Up front, Demba Ba is expected to be chosen over Fernando Torres.
Gary Cahill was brilliant against Manchester City. Fantastic form. David Luiz was horrible. Luiz in - Cahill out.
Dear collectors, customers and fellow sellers... I am not sure who knows what with recent SoccerStarz developments over the past few days but this is what I believe to be the plan having been in conversation with them recently. CHELSEA BLUE BASES There will be 9 blue base Champions League blisters available. There will be no more than 750 blisters produced per figure. This means the 23-man pack is now limited to 4250 units. Paulo Ferreira, Frank Lampard, David Luiz, Fernando Torres, Gary Cahill, Obi Mikel, Oriol Romeu, Ross Turnbull, Ryan Bertrand. This may be the reason why Bosingwa has a blue base although I would imagine there are a lot more than 750 made! The other 13 players (14 inc. Bosingwa) will be detained by SoccerStarz and used in the future in some way to be decided. ARSENAL NEW SQUAD NUMBERS Wilshere will NOT be available in blister pack but will be released in blind sachets. Szcesny will be released within the next month (possibly in limited numbers). MORE INFO Hugh from SoccerStarz has told ...
Stats; Tony Mowbray will be without defenders Justin Hoyte and Stuart Parnaby, meaning Andre Bikey should start at right-back with Stephen McManus alongside Rhys Williams at centre-back. Josh McEachran, currently on-loan from Chelsea, is ineligible to play against his parent club. Up front Lukas Jutkiewicz (ankle) is a doubt for the game, and so Curtis Main is on standby to support Scott McDonald. Meanwhile, Rafa Benitez should continue with Petr Cech in goal ahead of second-choice keeper Ross Turnbull, despite his tendency to rotate goalkeepers in the cup. Ryan Bertrand is likely to replace Ashley Cole at left-back, though, with John Terry set to partner David Luiz at centre-back and Branislav Ivanovic to start at right-back after Benitez ruled out Gary Cahill (virus) and Cesar Azpilicueta (leg). Juan Mata is likely to be rested for the tie to give Oscar a chance whilst Fernando Torres should also return to Benitez's team. Source: Goal.com
Questions need to be asked of the Manager once more after this. To start with, John Terry was dropped to the bench in favour of a starting combination of Gary Cahill (who was our man of the match) and David Luiz. If Terry was fit enough to be named on the bench he should be starting and it's as simple as that as far as I am concerned. When we found ourselves up against it, we needed JT in there barking his orders and giving people a shove to get going! Instead, we never had that. Once again Rafa's substitutions need to be addressed. City scored on around 60 mins. At that moment he needed to change it and to me it was obvious that Demba Ba wasn't get much of a look in and Ramires had one of his bad days. The solution SHOULD HAVE been Torres for BA and Moses for Ramires. Instead, he takes off Frank Lampard for Oscar and Eden Hazard for Moses!!! Surely Hazard needed to remain on the pitch because he has the ability to change the game in an instant. Alongside Mata and Moses that would have been the better com ...
lol at Pat Nevin calling David Luiz and Gary Cahill 'top players'. That's why no one takes you seriously Pat.
CHELSEA: Cech; Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Cole; Mikel, Lampard, Ramires, Mata, Hazard; Ba. There's no place for misfiring striker Fernando Torres, as Demba Ba is preferred in attack. John Obi Mikel starts in midfield, as does Frank Lampard. Juan Mata and Eden Hazard will be Chelsea's main sourced of creativity within the team. Gary Cahill and David Luiz are the centre-defensiv e duo, with Branislav Ivanovic and Ashley Cole completing the back four.
Gary Cahill and David Luiz are the centre-back partnership so Frank Lampard will captain the side.
CAHILL: HEALTHY SITUATION Gary Cahill says there is a confidence in the camp ahead of Thursday night's Europa League 2nd leg with Sparta Prague at Stamford Bridge. We take a 1-goal advantage,&an away goal, into tomorrow night's game against the Czech side,&will be strong favourites to progress into the last 16,but Cahill is taking nothing for granted against a side that caused us a few problems last week. 'You've got to take teams seriously, they're a quality outfit&made it tough for us away from home,' Cahill said. 'We're playing at Stamford Bridge&are always confident but we won't take it lightly, they made it difficult for long periods of that game. In Europe, our home form,we're unbeaten in quite a few games&hopefully it can continue. 'When we play at Stamford Bridge we should always be confident,it's not a place many teams want to come&play.' The game comes just 3days before we visit champions Man City in the Barclays Premier League,&the defender is hopeful that a positive result will see us take moment ...
Chelsea Captain John Terry is fit to face Sparta Prague in the last 32, despite missing the 4-1 win over Wigan at the weekend. The European Champions play their first ever Europa League game - the last time they featured in this competition in 2002/03 it was labelled the UEFA Cup - after they became the first ever defending champions to be dumped out of the Champions League at the group stages. The Blues will be without David Luiz and Demba Ba, who are suspended and cup-tied respectively, while Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel have been left out due to their participation in the African Cup of Nations. However, there is good news as both Gary Cahill and Petr Cech are fit to feature, the latter making 38 appearances for Sparta Prague in 2001/02. The Czech club have not played since early December due to the winter break, and while they will be rested and fresh for the tie, they may be lacking in match-fitness for such a crucial game. (Rinche)
A more lively Fernando Torres, who replaced Demba Ba in the starting XI, showed good awareness to play Ramires in on goal for Chelsea's opener, before Eden Hazard displayed a cool head to drill the Blues into a two goal lead following enterprising build-up by Cesar Azpilicueta. A poorly timed offside trap – Gary Cahill the culprit – allowed Shaun Maloney to scamper through and finish beyond Petr Cech but Rafa Benitez's team rallied and finished the job courtesy of Lampard and a late Marko Marin header. The Blues opened the scoring. David Luiz's pass from midfield in the 23rd minute was turned around the corner by Torres into the path of the overlapping Ramires. The Brazilian steadied himself as he entered Al-Habsi's box and coolly stroked the ball high into the net to give the hosts the lead. It was all too easy for the Blues. Wigan emerged for the second period sticking to its principles of controlled possession and for a moment it looked as if it might trouble a relaxed Chelsea. But the Latics found ...
MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 2 SOUTHAMPTON 2 Summary Chelsea failed to make the most of our game in hand by letting a two-goal half-time lead slip. On a freezing night at Stamford Bridge, it was a performance that never managed to catch fire but after Demba Ba hit his first goal in front of the home fans and Eden Hazard rifled in a second goal, the three points looked secure. But substitute Rickie Lambert was able to head the visitors back into the match soon after the interval, and a powerful finish by Jason Puncheon punctured Chelsea hopes with quarter of an hour left to play. Team news Gary Cahill returned from paternity leave with Branislav Ivanovic the player making way. David Luiz was again in defence and there was just one further change - Oscar coming in for Ryan Bertrand. Frank Lampard and Ramires continued as the two deeper central midfielders. Southampton, as they did in our FA Cup meeting, preferred Jay Rodriguez to Rickie Lambert in attack. Jos Hooiveld replaced injured captain Jose Fonte in defence ...
Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard don't close down the cross, David Luiz and Gary Cahill don't even attack the ball after
Can't believe I actually met Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill, Demba Ba, Juan Mata, Edin Hazard and the one and only David Luiz ... best day ever!
what David Luiz and Gary Cahill not really the best combination.
David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Juan Mata are all in the Premier League team of the week.
What We Learned yesterday: 1.Juan Mata is Chelsea’s most crucial and best playmaker. 2.Fernando Torres is showing consistency. 3.David Luiz belongs in the midfield. 4.Gary Cahill is Chelsea’s best CB. 5.Rafael Benitez has proven that he is the right man for the job. Do you agree? D.

Luiz passed his first real test in the Chelsea midfield with flying colours, showing skill, tenacity and an impressive range of passing. Capped a fine display with a Didier Drogba-esque free kick on the half-hour mark.Cahill was often the free man while Ivanovic took on Benteke, and for the most part enjoyed a trouble-free afternoon. Produced one fantastic sliding clearance to deny Benteke a simple tap-in after the break, though. Luiz was so calm and composed on the ball as he continued to show his brilliance and his Brazilian- ness. A world class freekick and a few brilliant balls from David show that he belongs in the midfield. Gary Cahill continues to impress at the back as him and Ivanovic worked well together to make Cech’s life easier. -jla
Chelsea make three changes from the team that beat Leeds in the Capital One Cup with David Luiz pushed up into midfield at the expense of Oscar. Gary Cahill comes into central defence for Luiz as Ashley Cole and Eden Hazard replace Ryan Bertrand and Marko Marin respectively. Villa make only one change to the matchday squad of 18 that beat Liverpool last time out. Darren Bent is still absent as Stephen Ireland replaces Charles N'Zogbia on the bench. SSE
(WC) He is our silent assassin and tries to give his best in the pitch!! Deadly Headers! Defence at its best! Always on toes! and Shoots like a striker! Who am I? a) John Terry b) David Luiz c) Branislav Ivanovic d) Gary Cahill
Team News Chelsea will once again be without Captain John Terry who continues to recover from a knee injury, while Gary Cahill is suspended for the game after seeing red against Corinthians on Sunday. Branislav Ivanovic is therefore expected to play alongside David Luiz in the middle of defence. Central midfield is also an area of concern for Benitez with John Obi Mikel and Ramires suspended, and Oriol Romeu ruled out for the season with a knee injury. Frank Lampard is therefore likely to play alongside Oscar, with Victor Moses, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard supporting Fernando Torres in attack. Daniel Sturridge is a major doubt with a hamstring injury but the Chelsea line-up may be determined by those who are feeling fresh following their long-haul trip to Japan. Leeds are likely to without goalkeeper Jamie Ashdown so Paddy Kenny is expected to deputise between the sticks. Captain Lee Peltier is likely to miss out with a shoulder problem and on-loan West Brom winger Jerome Thomas is also a doubt. Alan Tate i ...
Chelsea: Interesting statistics from 2012/13 Some assorted statistics: – With six goals each, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata are Chelsea’s joint top-scorers so far. Mata has, however, reached that mark after 4 fewer starts in the Premier League. – Mata also ties the assist category with Belgian Eden Hazard (6 each), with the two players occupying joint second on the overall list. Again though, Mata has started four fewer games. – Outside of the back-four, John Obi Mikel has the highest pass-success rate in the squad (89.9%). – Gary Cahill and Fernando Torres both win, on average, 2.6 aerial duels per game, the most amongst Rafa Benitez’s squad. – David Luiz averages more defensive clearances (5.3) per game than any of his teammates. – Luis also leads his side in intercepts per game (1.8). – Oscar is dribbled more than any Chelsea player (1.4/game). – Gary Cahill blocks more shots per game (1.7) than any player in the Premier League. – John Obi Mikel commits on average more fouls per g ...
So it is Leeds today in our Capital One clash, and the biggest turmoil is that we are out of defensive midfielders, Mikel and Ramires both are suspended, while Oriol Romeu is out injured. It was understood that Benitez was going to play David Luiz in the midfield as a defensive midfielder, but we can rule that out now as Gary Cahill is suspended too for his red card in the Club World Cup final, while John Terry is injured, so Luiz naturally will be partnering Ivanovic. Any ideas as to who should play as out double pivot in midfield?
DAVID LUIZ: FUTURE OUTLOOK - David Luiz offered words of support for his central defence partner in the Club World Cup final, following Gary Cahill's late red card in the match...
First half David Luiz...second half was Gary Cahill
Chelsea club Captain John Terry (knee) will miss the tournament through injury so Gary Cahill and David Luiz are due to start in the centre of defence for Rafa Benitez's side.
MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 6 FC NORDSJAELLAND 1 Summary A record Champions League victory, complete with some sparkling football, was not enough to see us through to this competition's knockout stages. The fact Juventus won at Shakhtar Donetsk means we finish third in Group E, and will now take part in the reformatted Europa League for the first time. It renders an impressive display at Stamford Bridge relatively meaningless, though we did for the first time score six in a Champions League fixture, with goals coming from a David Luiz penalty after both sides had already missed from the spot, two from Fernando Torres, who had not scored in a month, and one apiece from Gary Cahill (pictured below), Juan Mata and Oscar, following four goals in 20 second-half minutes after Nordsjaelland had pulled one back immediately from the kick-off. The result brings a first win for Rafael Benitez, but the night will be remembered as the one the previous season's Champions League winners bowed out for the first time at the gro ...
Gary Cahill and David Luiz both with goals
Just having a review of the three penalties awarded at Stamford Bridge in that first half. I'm going harsh on the first one against Gary Cahill, the second one is a clear penalty, and I think the third one which David Luiz actually netted was also very harsh.
Up Chelsea, Chelsea go into the game with Branislav Ivanovic playing at centre-back, as John Terry still recovers from his injury alongside Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge who also miss out. Oriol Romeu drops to the bench with Ryan Bertrand and Oscar, whilst David Luiz misses out completely. They make way for Gary Cahill, Jon Obi Mikel, Juan Mata and Victor Moses. The champions of Europe go to Upton Park still looking for their first win under Rafa Benitez, though despite failing to score since the Spaniard took over from Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea are also yet to concede.
Chelsea's interim boss Rafa Benitez has named the strongest possible squad for next month's Club World Championship in Japan, as the Blues look to become just the second English club to win the global title. The Blues are set to face the winner of the play- off between Asian champions Ulsan Hyundai and North American champions Monterrey, with the match kicking off on Thursday December 13. HAZARDOUS START On the other side of the draw, Brazilian side Corinthians will face the winners of Al Ahly and either Sanfrecce Hiroshima or Auckland City, who play each other in a preliminary qualifying round. Goalkeepers: Petr Cech, Ross Turnbull, Hilario Defenders: Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, David Luiz, Paulo Ferreira, Gary Cahill, John Terry, Cesar Azpilicueta, Ryan Bertrand Midfielders: Oriol Romeu, Ramires, Frank Lampard, Oscar, John Obi Mikel, Eden Hazard, Marko Marin, Lucas Piazon Forwards: Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, Victor Moses, Daniel Sturridge
Gary Cahill & David Luiz just isn't a good pairing. At all.
Gary Cahill and David Luiz at the back is just a disaster waiting to happen.
Even i would love to play against David Luiz & Gary Cahill & Torres doesnt score because he doesnt get service
Chelsea played terrible tonight! David Luiz and Gary Cahill are terrible when they play together.
David Luiz was quality tonight, Gary Cahill was appalling, getting worse every week
The Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo is likely to drop Fernando Torres and play Eden Hazard in a lone striking role in tonight's Champions League match with Juventus. With Daniel Sturridge apparently having suffered a setback in training, Hazard will play at centre-forward,David Luiz is set to partner Gary Cahill at centre-half, with Branislav Ivanovic starting at right-back and Ashley Cole returning at left-back, according to the Daily Mail.
Gary Cahill maybe misunderstanding. David Luiz' quality is no doubt. questions for leadership or captaincy.
Gary Cahill also move to defend team-mate David Luiz.
Gary Cahill on David Luiz: David Luiz is so comfortable on the ball and has great ability, you don't captain...
Judging from the last few games David Luiz,is off-form,And.Gary Cahill should take his place until he improves.
West Brom maintained their impressive start to the season as they beat Chelsea 2-1 at The Hawthorns. Peter Odemwingie nodded in the winning goal early in the second half after Shane Long and Eden Hazard had also scored with close-range headers before the break. Roberto Di Matteo, on his return to West Brom, saw his side push hard for a second equaliser but they were unable to find a way past Boaz Myhill who was deputising for the injured Ben Foster in the Baggies goal. Chelsea were much changed as they had one eye on Tuesday's crunch clash with Juventus in the Uefa Champions League and left the likes of Ashley Cole, Ramires, Oscar and Juan Mata on the bench. And it showed in their sluggish start when Shane Long escaped the clutches of David Luiz to head past Petr Cech at the far post from a probing James Morrison cross. Chelsea enjoyed plenty of possession in the early stages but Long was a constant threat on the break and got the better of Gary Cahill on two occasions without finding the net. At the othe ...
Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo appears to have one eye on his side's Champions League game against Juventus in midweek. He makes five changes with centre-backs Gary Cahill and David Luiz, midfielder Oriol Romeu, winger Victor Moses as well as striker Daniel Sturridge starting. They replace Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Ramires, Juan Mata and Oscar.
What We Learned From The Shakhtar Match : 7.11.2012 94' minute, corner to Chelsea, Juan Mata to take... "Mata's ball in towards MOSES and Chelsea have won it at the death, incredible scenes here at Stamford Bridge!". That was the final play of the night as Chelsea won 3-2 against Shakhtar. An incredible has shown us an array of things. Scorers : Fernando Torres (6') Willian (9', 47') Oscar (40') Moses (94') What We Learned : 1. David Luiz continues to be woeful. 2. Juan Mata continues sensational form. 3. That's what Champions are made of. 4. Mikel-Ramires is the best combination. 5. Torres still not at his best. 1. David Luiz continues to be woeful : Just as I say almost every match, Gary Cahill has to take over as the other centre-beck next to John Terry. Cahill is, to me, more composed and a more skilled player than Luiz. While Luiz charms us with his occasional goal and his character, we must look at Cahill as our main CB after Terry. David Luiz had another poor night and was careless in possession as ...
"John Terry, he's still the best of Chelsea's centre backs." Sure, David Luiz and Gary Cahill played in the Champions League final which Chelsea won, but why let facts get in the way of your analysis?
chelsea shared the following link: AND IVAN PARTNERSHIP ! During yesterday's clash with Swansea , Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic was the chosen centre back partnership due to the absence of David Luiz and the skipper John Terry. This was Ivans first time back at CB since his surprising switch to RB nearer the end of...
An article comparing the stats of Chelsea's Gary Cahill and David Luiz by Robin Clark for EPLIndex.com
' David Luiz and Gary Cahill are playing together very well and JT is here as well, and Ivanovic is a very good centre-back too,' says Di Matteo. 'We have good options.'
Just got this news for Chelsea fans that David Luiz will not be available for Swansea City game, after the defender has already gotten 5 yellow cards, which means he will serve one match ban. Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard are both in doubt for the clash owing to injuries, while John Terry will continue his four match ban, having missed Tottenham Hotspurs and Man United(epl), and Man United(League Cup) already. So, Branislav Ivanovic will fall back to partner Gary Cahill at the defence, while Cesar Azpilicueta plays the right back role, and Ryan Betrand in for Ashley Cole.IRE O.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says being knocked out of the League Cup by Chelsea was a "sore lesson" for his "young" side. Chelsea made two defensive errors as Ryan Giggs and Javier Hernandez scored either side of David Luiz's penalty. Gary Cahill made it 2-2 but it appeared Nani's chipped finish would win it, before Eden Hazard's spot-kick. Daniel Sturridge and Ramires both registered in extra time before Giggs added a late consolation penalty, with the match finishing 5-4 to the Blues.
Gary Cahill, Ivanovic, and David Luiz have more goals than aguero, tevez, and balotelli have this season
If Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo wants to win things this season, then he has to work on making that back line more solid, and in my opinion the best options would be to drop David Luiz from the line-up and give Gary Cahill more of a chance when Captain John Terry returns
Chelsea sensationally avenged their bitter Premier League defeat to Manchester United as they won an nine-goal Capital One Cup thriller 5-4 after extra-time at Stamford Bridge. United looked set to pile on the misery for the European Champions with a 3-2 fourth-round victory three days after ending their 10-year wait for a league win in west London, in the most controversial manner imaginable. But Eden Hazard scored a penalty with the last kick of normal time before Daniel Sturridge and Ramires completed an amazing comeback just 24 hours after Arsenal's astonishing 7-5 win at Reading. Just as in that game, defending was nowhere to be seen as United led three times through Ryan Giggs, Javier Hernandez and Nani and Chelsea hit back with a David Luiz penalty and Gary Cahill header. Giggs also scored an extra-time consolation from the spot for United as the Mark Clattenburg saga was briefly forgotten. The 6,000 United fans, far more than on Sunday, mercilessly taunted their opponents throughout about both Cla ...
Chelsea field the same team that won 4-2 at Spurs. With John Terry still suspended, David Luiz partners Gary Cahill in defence. -SW
The pairing of David Luiz & Gary Cahill is as good as Ricardo Carvalho & JT were back in the days.
Surely it's time that Gary Cahill was made first choice center half! David Luiz is having one of his all to often wobbly ones and Terry must be the only player in the prem who is slower than Grant Holt! Back line looks a shambles.
Glenn Hoddle: "David Luiz and Gary Cahill are the two best footballing centre backs in the premiership"
Also (David Luiz/Gary Cahill) makes my lyfe. When they high-fived and smiled at each other after the Spurs game... Swoon.
With John Terry suspended, Gary Cahill comes in to partner David Luiz in central defence.
Brad Friedel had a bad game today! Am I the only guy who thinks Gary Cahill is just as good as David Luiz?
have kept clean sheets in 3 of the last 4 games when David Luiz and Gary Cahill have started a game together. guys. . .
if Gary Cahill and David Luiz survived. “id rather see messi meet Johnny Evans
Chelsea career Gary Cahill signed for Chelsea in mid-January 2012. He became the fifth current England international in the squad and on moving to Stamford Bridge from Bolton Wanderers, and took the number 24 shirt. He didn't get his first Blues appearances for a couple of weeks as Andre Villas-Boas chose to give him time to acclimatise in west London, but did start the dramatic 3-3 draw with Manchester United and, despite the comeback from the visitors, looked to be showing the early signs of a promising partnership with David Luiz. From that point onwards, Cahill was regularly involved, as knocks to central defenders afforded him opportunities, and he also showed the goalscoring prowess previously on display at former club Bolton and with the England national team, netting two during March. Cahill enjoyed arguably his most impressive game in a Chelsea shirt during the 1-0 Champions League semi-final first leg victory over Barcelona, but having picked up an injury in the return, he missed the last month ...
If, as seems likely, Chelsea have to do without John Terry for at least four domestic games in the near future, then Gary Cahill and David Luiz will need to form a far more solid partnership than was evident in the 4-0 Champions League victory away to Nordsjaelland in Copenhagen on Tuesday.
...So, today gazza is wondering in the third person...WHY THE *** DID WE LET A 2:0 LEAD GO...he is deeply sad-end by this. RDM needs to get Michael Essien back and turn him into the new Claud Mackalele...or, David Luiz and play Gary Cahill next to JT...!! (still not mad)
Gary Cahill in my eyes is now pushing for a regular first team start at Chelsea ahead of David Luiz and that's
David Luiz's defending is progressively getting worse. Gary Cahill would be an elite sweeper, but he's a liability as a centre-back
Who do you understand better on the field? Gary Cahill or David Luiz?
Shout out to Branislav Ivanovic, David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole. Excellent defending today
would much rather see John Terry and Gary Cahill than John Terry and David Luiz on sunday
Please someone help me! Who's gunna start the season Gary Cahill or David Luiz
If either of Gary Cahill or David Luiz can cement a place alongside John Terry, there should be few problems at the back.
Gary Cahill and David Luiz are ranked 79 on FIFA 13. This game is an utter joke!
Gary Cahill and David Luiz both get a 79 rating on They were the two centre-backs on that night in Munich.
Wow if man u get Ashley Cole.. Move David Luiz to lb and Gary Cahill to cb.. Or go buy a criscito, Marcelo or something.

Gary Cahill or David Luiz, no stupidity please!!
also he says that David Luiz is inferior to Gary cahill
Do you think Gary Cahill will be able to bench David Luiz this summer?
and I don't like David Luiz he make me nervous throw in Gary cahill
Barcelona Look to Conduct Triple Chelsea Raid According to Mundo Deportivo Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova has earmarked moves for Chelsea defenders David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic as he looks to beef up his defensive options this summer. The Nou Camp side have had to play players out of position over the past couple of seasons as the likes of Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique have struggled with injuries and with Eric Abidal not certain to make a comeback following a liver transplant it seems sensible for Vilanova to plan for a defensive signing or two. Other targets named by this source include Matts Hummels and Thiago Silva but moves to bring either of the Blues pair could prove easier to secure. Roman Abramovich will surely fight off advances for any of his top performers as the Chelsea owner looks to continue to flex his financial muscles having already snapped up Marko Marin and Eden Hazard for a combined fee in the region of £38m. Chelsea brought in Gary Cahill to help beef up their central defensive o ...
It all went downhill for Mario Gomez when he faced Gary Cahill and David Luiz ...
apart from David Luiz & Gary Cahill! Could play all day in the champs league final and he wouldn't have scored.
I bet David Luiz and Gary Cahill are watching the game and thinking "Yep, pocketed that."
he can learn a lot from Gary Cahill or David Luiz though
David Luiz led the crowd through a more traditional 'Blue is the Colour', Gary Cahill announced he was going to bounce in a minute and 'Happy Birthday' was sung to penalty shoot-out hero Petr Cech who turned 30 today. Frank Lampard took the mic to say that Saturday had been the best night of the players' careers and that Chelsea was the best club in the world, before John Terry told the fans how much they deserved to win the Champions League. And then it was off to the end of the parade and a full stop on a truly historic season, with the players now away from the club until July with mix of well-earned holiday and international matches between now and then.
Eventually things will calm down a bit and the questions going forward will have to be asked about Robbie, Didier and where the team goes from here. Amazingly Chelsea won the Champions League Final with an immense defensive display but without JT and Branislav Ivanovic. I have said for some time now that the team doesn't actually need the extreme changes that many have called for just yet, Gary Cahill and David Luiz are classic examples of how you rebuild slowly but surely without dismissing stalwarts unnecessarily early. I hope the changes can be made seamlessly over the next year or two. If that can be done then Chelsea FC will not only be about memories of the 19th May 2012, but also of hopes for the future that we can do it again and again
Champions News: Chelsea back four - Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Jose Bosigwa blocked 35 shot fired towards Chelsea goal with their body. Chelsea has proved adept at shot blocking by throwing themselves at the ball. And they have done this consistently since the Roman era more than any other team in any competition
I think Petr Cech, David Luiz and Gary Cahill are the best things about Chavski.

WHY WE DESERVE THE UEFA CHAMPION League Cup 1. comeback against Napoli FC at home 2. we beat the worlds greatest club, FC Barcelona with 10 man standing on aggregate. 3. we play on final without John Terry(C) , Branislav Ivanovic , inspiration midfielder Ramires. 4. David Luiz & Gary Cahill return for the final bring spirit to the club 5. DROGBA WAS A LEGEND
Drogba is the man of the moment, but without John Obi Mikel anchoring that midfield last night we'd have been finished. Gary Cahill and David Luiz are the partnership of the future at CFC played fantastically. Even Bosingwa had a good game. COYB
Think it is fair to say David Luiz proved all the doubters wrong last night. Brilliant footballer. Himself and Gary Cahill were immense. And Drogba's was header was awesome. Well deserved win in the end I think!!! And I think DiMatteo deserves his chance now. Come on the Blues.
David Luiz and Gary Cahill is the best defensive duo in the Premier League actually
Petr Cech Top of the Match 207 3 7.0 Made a superb save to keep out Robben's penalty in extra-time. Slightly suspect for the Bayern goal but made some crucial stops throughout the game. Ashley Cole 112 11 7.0 So solid for much of the game - making one superb block - but got caught ball-watching for Bayern's first goal. Offered virtually nothing going forward. David Luiz 82 9 6.5 The Portuguese defender was generally strong in his reading of the game and timing of challenges, but slightly caught out for Muller's goal. José Bosingwa 58 34 5.0 Struggled when one-on-one up against Ribery but was not as exposed as he might have been. Gary Cahill 78 16 5.5 The England defender showed good anticipation but seemed to be a little flat-footed and off the pace, especially in the second half when he appeared to be carrying an injury. Ryan Bertrand 56 58 4.5 The youngster surprisingly started the game in a left-wing position but looked overwhelmed by the occasion and seemed uncomfortable on the ball. Frank Lampard 88 ...
