Reaction from the clubs involved in Monday's Champions League last 16 draw: Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) v Chelsea (ENG) PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi: "Last year was an apprenticeship which must not be repeated. Chelsea are a good draw for us. I am very confident. I've got confidence in my manager and in my players that they'll show on the pitch the best of PSG." Chelsea secretary David Barnard: "PSG are known to us as we played them in the quarters last year and they've got David Luiz playing for them too. It's a good draw logistically too for our supporters. Both sides have very different squads from last year, so if it was PSG or anyone else, it would've been the same situation." Manchester City (ENG) v Barcelona (ESP) City's director of football Txiki Begiristain: "We have plenty of confidence with the way we qualified beating Bayern Munich at home and Roma away, so the players will be working hard to get fit and arrive in confidence for those games. We have improved our squad from last season and we ...
FIFA World Cup Brazil match day 1 preview: Brazil v Croatia: 5 time champions and co hosts take on the Balkan nation on the rise. You would be making a mistake if you think that Brazil will roll over the Croats. Neymar is not fully fit and the attacking full backs - Alves & Marcelo spend more time in the opposition half than defending in their own half. In Thiago Silva they have the best defender in the world but in David Luiz they have a joke who is well capable in pulling off some howlers. Fat and lazy Fred will be good if Neymar turns on the show. The Croats have an enviable midfield trio of Modric - Barça bound Rakitic (fresh from leading Sevilla to Europa League glory) & Niko Kranjcar who are well capable of dictating the pace of the match via their possession based approach. Expect Brazil to play mainly on the counter attack via Neymar and Croatia to have majority of the possession. Star striker Mario Mandzukic will be suspended after picking up a card in his last competitive outing for Croatia. Pr ...
David Luiz close to completing record £40m move to PSG from Chelsea • Clubs in advanced talks over transfer of Brazilian centre-back • Blues hope to complete £31.8m signing of Diego Costa Chelsea are in advanced talks with Paris St Germain over the sale of David Luiz to the Ligue 1 champions with the fee for the Brazilian expected to top the £40m mark, a record for a defender. Discussions between the clubs are on-going and an agreement is anticipated well before the start of the World Cup. David Luiz, a £23.5m signing from Benfica in January 2011, has claimed the Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea but found himself something of a stop-gap at both centre-half and in defensive midfield last season. At 27, and with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich also long-standing admirers, he represents a saleable asset for the London club as they seek to comply with Uefa’s financial fair play regulations. The sale to PSG, who are more bullish about maintaining their lavish spending of recen ...

Name: David Luiz Age: 27 Position: Centre back Club: Chelsea Caps [goals]: 34 [0] David Luiz has spent the past seven years in Europe, moving to Benfica in 2007 from Vitoria and then transferring to English side Chelsea in 2011 for a fee in the region of €25 million. In his time at Stamford Bridge, he has helped the club to win the Champions League in 2012 as well as the Europa League the following season. Why has he been selected? Luiz is one of head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's most trusted options at the back, as well as providing cover if necessary in a defensive midfield capacity, although it would appear that the boss has others in mind there. A bubbly character, he fits the profile of the rest of the squad perfectly. How has he played this season? Helped Chelsea to the semi-finals of the Champions League in Jose Mourinho's first term back at the club, as well as representing Brazil 17 times since the turn of last year; has long been linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona. What will his rol ...
DAVID LUIZ TO BARCELONA FINALLY A DONE DEAL. (Courtois & Hazard still on the move) Stamford Bridge star set for Nou Camp switch. Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with David Luiz over a potential summer move to the Nou Camp. The Catalan club have been actively pursuing a long term replacement for Carles Puyol, who is set to leave Barcelona, and have identified the 26 year old Chelsea fan favourite as the man for the job. Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta is said to have secured terms with Luiz that would see the former Benfica man sign a five year deal worth around £4.5m a year. Chelsea has agreed a £25m with Barcelona for the Brazilian international who has been something of a bit-part player this season. Luiz was a key member of the Chelsea sides that won the Champions League and Europa League titles but has started less than half of the west London club’s Premier League fixtures this term and has more frequently been used in a defensive midfield role. Chelsea signed Luiz in Ja ...
Blues boss Jose Mourinho has used the 26 year old Brazilian sparingly this term and his display against Crystal Palace has apparently convinced him to sell the former Benfica man. Chelsea are confident of winning the race to sign £45m rated Atletico Madrid star Costa and will look to bank £35m from the sale of Luiz to help cover the lion’s share of the cost. Mourinho ‘hauled’ off Luiz at half-time during the club’s surprise defeat to Crystal Palace and that may well prove his last Premier League run-out in Chelsea colours. Luiz is however expected to face PSG this week due to first choice midfielder Nemanja Matic being cup-tied. PSG and Barcelona are both thought to be keen on Luiz and both sides see the player as an option to be used at centre-back, where he is seemingly no longer required at Chelsea with Mourinho seeing Gary Cahill and John Terry as his first choice pairing. David Luiz was pivotal in Chelsea’s Champions League and Europa League triumph but doesn’t appear to be a key part o ...
Chelsea sent scouts to Benfica’s Stadium of Light on Thursday night to watch highly-rated defender Ezequiel Garay, according to the Daily Mirrorwebsite It is no secret that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is a massive fan of the mans ability and is looking to add to his back line, with David Luiz tipped to leave and John Terry coming towards the end of his career. And scouts must have been impressed as the 27-year-old Argentine scored the opening goal as Benfica beat Spurs on aggregate to reach the Europa League quarter-finals. His central defensive partnership at the other end of the field, however, with Brazilian Luisao has been pivotal as the club close in on the Portuguese title.
Chelsea vs Basel KO 19:45 The teams met in last season's UEFA Europa League semi-finals, the London club winning 5-2 on aggregate on their way to lifting the trophy. Previous Meeting; Last season's games were the first competitive encounters between the sides. In the Switzerland first leg, David Luiz's stoppage-time free-kick earned Chelsea a 2-1 advantage after Fabian Schar's late penalty had cancelled out Victor Moses' first-half opener. In the second leg Chelsea scored three goals in ten second-half minutes, through Fernando Torres, Moses and Luiz again, after Mohamed Salah had brought Basel level on aggregate on the stroke of half-time. Basel were thus denied becoming the first Swiss side to make it to the final of a major UEFA club tournament. The teams at Stamford Bridge on 2 May were: Chelsea: Cech, Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Bertrand, Luiz (Ake 82), Ramires (Oscar 66), Lampard, Moses, Hazard (Mata 75), Torres. Chelsea: Top 10 goals of the season David Luiz, Juan Mata & Frank Lampard have all scored sensational goals for the Europa League champions this season Chelsea won the Europa League and finished third in the Premier League, scoring some memorable goals along the way. But which were the best 10? 10. Frank Lampard v Newcastle A mad game at St James' Park, which Chelsea went on to lose in the last moments of the game. With Jonas Gutierrez putting the Magpies in front after there was a shout for Fabricio Coloccini to be sent off following an injury he caused to Demba Ba, it summed up Chelsea's first-half performance. Nevertheless they responded well in the second half and, when needed, the man for any Chelsea occasion popped up again. With Chelsea on the attack that seemed to be resulting in not very much, Lampard collected Ashley Cole's pass and by his standards controlled it poorly on his chest but making up for it by taking it past Yohan Cabaye with a superb touch and lashed a powerful effort into the top ...

Europa League: Benfica 1 Chelsea 2 Full Match Report: 15 May 2013 22:45 Chelsea won the UEFA Europa League thanks to Branislav Ivanovic's last- gasp header as they beat Benfica 2-1 in Amsterdam on Wednesday. Fernando Torres had given the Premier League side the lead and the Serbian defender sealed a memorable win in stoppage time after Oscar Cardozo's penalty had levelled the scores. The Portuguese side named their strongest possible XI with Cardozo flanked by Eduardo Salvio, Nico Gaitan and Rodrigo in attack. But Rafael Benitez had to make do without the services of injured duo John Terry and Eden Hazard, with David Luiz stepping into midfield to allow Ramires to play on the right wing. Benfica settled the quicker of the two teams and were soon on the front foot, Cardozo heading over from a Andre Almeida cross inside two minutes. Jorge Jesus' men dictated the play in the early going but proved wasteful in front of goal, Gaitan firing high at the end of another intricate move, which saw Salvio turn down a ...

HARD TACKLE In spite of his side's 1-0 loss last night to Steau Bucharest in the Europa League, Chelsea defender, David Luiz has warned a wounded Manchester United that the Blues are ready to pile on the pain with an FA Cup upset on Sunday. United will try to recover from their Champions League disasters against Real Madrid when they challenge Rafa Benitez’s side at Old Trafford in the sixth round. Meanwhile, Howard Webb has been charged with keeping a lid on things at Old Trafford. QUESTION Man vs Chelsea, who do you see carrying the day?

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany could miss a fifth successive game with a calf injury. Gareth Barry is a doubt with an ankle problem sustained during last week's FA Cup win over Leeds. Chelsea are likely to be much-changed from the side that started Thursday's Europa League last-32 tie against Sparta Prague. Frank Lampard, Branislav Ivanovic, Ashley Cole, David Luiz, Eden Hazard and Demba Ba could all be recalled. -RL
BENITEZ: THE RIGHT DIRECTION London: Rafael Benitez is confident the competition for places among his squad will benefit us as the season enters a crucial stage, starting with tomorrow's Europa League return leg against Sparta Prague. The Blues go into the game in a strong position having secured a 1-0 win at the Generali Arena a week ago courtesy of a late strike by Oscar, and having won our last three matches, scoring nine goals in the process, confidence is understandably high. 'We have a lot of confidence and the good thing is that there's competition between the players, that's important, especially if you play twice a week,' said the Blues boss. 'We have more competition now, which is a problem, but it's good for me. It's good because we have so many games and it's important to have the whole squad available. 'I'm quite positive, we've scored a lot of goals over the course of the season and we've been strong in defence. 'We have to win tomorrow, progress in the competition and then we have tough gam ...
CAHILL: HEALTHY SITUATION Gary Cahill says there is a confidence in the camp ahead of Thursday night's Europa League 2nd leg with Sparta Prague at Stamford Bridge. We take a 1-goal advantage,&an away goal, into tomorrow night's game against the Czech side,&will be strong favourites to progress into the last 16,but Cahill is taking nothing for granted against a side that caused us a few problems last week. 'You've got to take teams seriously, they're a quality outfit&made it tough for us away from home,' Cahill said. 'We're playing at Stamford Bridge&are always confident but we won't take it lightly, they made it difficult for long periods of that game. In Europe, our home form,we're unbeaten in quite a few games&hopefully it can continue. 'When we play at Stamford Bridge we should always be confident,it's not a place many teams want to come&play.' The game comes just 3days before we visit champions Man City in the Barclays Premier League,&the defender is hopeful that a positive result will see us take moment ...
Rafael Benitez will welcome back four players into his squad for Sunday's game against Brentford at Stamford Bridge, and promises a strong line-up as we pursue a place in the last 16 of the FA Cup. Suspension and ineligibility meant David Luiz and Demba Ba were left behind in London for our Europa League win in Prague on Thursday night, while African champions John Mikel Obi and Victor Moses are available once more after victory with Nigeria on Sunday.
Chelsea captain John Terry is fit to face Sparta Prague in the last 32, despite missing the 4-1 win over Wigan at the weekend. The European champions play their first ever Europa League game - the last time they featured in this competition in 2002/03 it was labelled the UEFA Cup - after they became the first ever defending champions to be dumped out of the Champions League at the group stages. The Blues will be without David Luiz and Demba Ba, who are suspended and cup-tied respectively, while Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel have been left out due to their participation in the African Cup of Nations. However, there is good news as both Gary Cahill and Petr Cech are fit to feature, the latter making 38 appearances for Sparta Prague in 2001/02. The Czech club have not played since early December due to the winter break, and while they will be rested and fresh for the tie, they may be lacking in match-fitness for such a crucial game. Chelsea stars took some time out before their Europa League first-leg clash with Sparta Prague to walk around the Czech Republic's capital.
MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 4 Wigan Athletic 1 Posted on: Sat 09 Feb 2013 Summary We returned to winning ways courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at Stamford Bridge, a victory which keeps us third in the Premier League table. Ramires had given us the lead with his sixth goal of the season midway through the first half, finishing well after excellent build-up play between David Luiz and Fernando Torres, and the fact Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi had been their best player before the break spoke volumes. Eden Hazard doubled our lead shortly after the restart, converting from a Cesar Azpilicueta cross, but two minutes later the away side were back in it as Shaun Maloney pounced on a loose ball and rounded Cech to score. Frank Lampard's 12th goal of the season, however, coupled with an injury-time header by substitute Marko Marin, sealed the victory for the Blues. Attention now turns towards the Europa League, and a last 32 clash with Sparta Prague on Thursday. Team news Rafael Benitez made four changes t ...
Rafa Benitez has had a stroke of luck Demba Ba, David Luiz and Petr Cech have all been passed fit to face Wigan on Saturday. David Luiz has been unavailable for a bit due to a minor injury, but he was able to play as Brazil lost to England mid-week and didn't appear to be limited at all. With Terry being injured and John Obi Mikel still in South Africa, it will be interesting to see how Rafa Benitez chooses to use him this weekend. Also available for Chelsea will be Eden Hazard, who has been out for the last three games while serving his suspension. Both Mikel and Moses will be back in time for our next fixture after Wigan, as both will be required to report back from international duty no later than Tuesday. Demba Ba will be unavailable for that match, however, as he is cup tied for the Europa League with his former club.
Further team news ahead of the Wigan game, David Luiz and Petr Cech are fit, whilst Eden Hazard is back in contention after finishing his ban. Demba Ba is likely to start up front as he is unavailable for Europa League duty in midweek. Early score predictions? Can we get back to winning ways?
BENITEZ: PLENTY TO PLAY FOR Rafael Benitez has called on his players to show greater levels of consistency ahead of tonight's Barclays Premier League game at Reading. Following two successive cup ties, both of which ended in draws, we head to the Madejski Stadium to take on a side with much to play for, and Benitez is hopeful his side can take inspiration from the first-half performance which set us on our way to a 2-1 win over Arsenal in our last league encounter. 'If you talk about the last 10 days, we had a fantastic game against Arsenal, a game against Swansea which wasn't so good and then Brentford which was 50-50,' said the Blues manager. 'We know we have to improve, but we are still in the FA Cup, still in the Europa League and we can still finish in the top four, or maybe more, you never know. 'We have to concentrate on our job. I was talking today with Frank [Lampard], John [Terry] and David Luiz. We were just talking about football. They know the way to change things is to win, we were winning n ...

MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 6 FC NORDSJAELLAND 1 Summary A record Champions League victory, complete with some sparkling football, was not enough to see us through to this competition's knockout stages. The fact Juventus won at Shakhtar Donetsk means we finish third in Group E, and will now take part in the reformatted Europa League for the first time. It renders an impressive display at Stamford Bridge relatively meaningless, though we did for the first time score six in a Champions League fixture, with goals coming from a David Luiz penalty after both sides had already missed from the spot, two from Fernando Torres, who had not scored in a month, and one apiece from Gary Cahill (pictured below), Juan Mata and Oscar, following four goals in 20 second-half minutes after Nordsjaelland had pulled one back immediately from the kick-off. The result brings a first win for Rafael Benitez, but the night will be remembered as the one the previous season's Champions League winners bowed out for the first time at the gro ...
