Ronaldo beats Messi, Neuer to Ballon d’Or Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been named world footballer of the year after winning the Ballon d’Or for the second year in a row. The Portugal captain beat Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to the award. Wolfsburg and Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler was named women’s player of the year, while Colombia’s James Rodriguez won goal of the year. The three candidates for the Ballon d’Or were all picked in the team of the year, along with defenders Phillip Lahm, David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos, midfielders Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos and Angel Di Maria and forward Arjen Robben. Meanwhile, Germany manager Joachim Low was named FIFA Coach of the Year at the ceremony. A huge favourite for the award, Low led Germany to the World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final. Before that came an unforgettable demolition of Brazil in the semi-finals, when Die Mannschaft hit seven past the hosts. Low ...
Reaction from the clubs involved in Monday's Champions League last 16 draw: Paris Saint-Germain (FRA) v Chelsea (ENG) PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi: "Last year was an apprenticeship which must not be repeated. Chelsea are a good draw for us. I am very confident. I've got confidence in my manager and in my players that they'll show on the pitch the best of PSG." Chelsea secretary David Barnard: "PSG are known to us as we played them in the quarters last year and they've got David Luiz playing for them too. It's a good draw logistically too for our supporters. Both sides have very different squads from last year, so if it was PSG or anyone else, it would've been the same situation." Manchester City (ENG) v Barcelona (ESP) City's director of football Txiki Begiristain: "We have plenty of confidence with the way we qualified beating Bayern Munich at home and Roma away, so the players will be working hard to get fit and arrive in confidence for those games. We have improved our squad from last season and we ...
David Luiz has insisted that Paris Saint-Germain are not afraid of Real Madrid or anyone else who they might be drawn against in the last 16 of the Champions League. A 3-1 defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday ensured that Laurent Blanc's men finished second in Group F, meaning they are not seeded for the next stage of the competition. As a result, their potential opponents in the last 16 are holders Real Madrid, last season's runners-up Atletico Madrid, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, Premier League table-toppers Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and Porto. David Luiz does not fear being drawn against one of the European heavyweights and insists that PSG must be prepared to go toe-to-toe with the best if they want to win their first-ever Champions League title in 2014-15. "We could play against Real Madrid or we could play against another team - either way, all that qualified are great teams with great squads of players and we are prepared to face them all," the centre-back, 27, told Goal after the clash at Camp ...
I totally differ with those claiming that first penalty on Rafael was unfair, i thnk he has grown en he doesn’t have that slack anymore. He’s now 24 years old and should not be still getting caught out like this. What happened yesterday is not the first time Rafael has fell victim to machiavellian skullduggery from an opponent. David Luiz of Chelsea then lured him into a senseless sending off in May 2013. Frank Ribery pulled a similar flanker on him in April 2010 in a European Cup match against Bayern Munich, a team managed by of all people, Louis Van Gaal. He’ll have to learn and learn quickly as I don’t believe Van Gaal will tolerate this. We've seen most things over the years, including losing two goal leads but never to lose so emphatically from such a position against such mediocre opposition. Next week, United play a West Ham side at Old Trafford who are buzzing off a very good win against Liverpool yesterday. Having seen what I saw yesterday, Its going to be tough as well.

PSG end pursuit of Real star Di Maria Paris Saint Germain have confirmed they have ended their interest in signing Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria. The French champions were keen to sign the Argentina international but problems with Financial Fair Play meant it was difficult to push through a deal. "We talked with (Real Madrid) president (Florentino) Perez but Di Maria was too expansive so we stopped the discussion," PSG president Nasser al Khelaifi told a news conference at the club's unveiling of David Luiz. Di Maria has also been linked with Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Monaco but it appears he will stay with Real Madrid for now. He only returned to training with Real this week after being given more time off by Madrid after Argentina reached the World Cup Final. Earlier reports had suggested that Madrid and PSG agreed a €75m transfer fee which would have come close to offsetting the €81m that Real Madrid signed to bring in James Rodriguez from Monaco.
The World Cup is off until Tuesday for the semifinals. So with a break in the action, why not throw up an arbitrary list of the Top 10 players in the world? Everyone loves lists and the arguments that ensue. The European transfer mill is only now just getting over its case of blue balls caused by the World Cup, meaning its only a matter of time before any standout player from Brazil is linked to every club in England. Most of this listed will be skewed off the World Cup, so it’s why you won’t see many Spanish National Team players. Manchester City’s Yaya Toure probably makes the list before the World Cup, but his performance was forgettable in Brazil — justifiably as his brother passed away on the eve of the tournament. One notable player who missed out on Brazil merits inclusion. Just missed: Yaya Toure, David Luiz, Gareth Bale, Marco Reus, Diego Costa, Aaron Ramsey, Angel Di Maria, Vincent Kompany. 10. Thibaut Courtois, goalkeeper (Belgium/Chelsea): Americans should be cursing the tall Belgian ...
Latest transfers: 2014/2015 Robert Lewandowski had been common knowledge for some time, but his transfer from Borussia Dortmund, for whom he had starred since 2010, to German rivals Bayern Munich was officially completed at the beginning of July. David Luiz, is also on the move, joining up with his Brazilian compatriot Thiago Silva at Paris Saint-Germain. David Villa committed himself to newly-established New York City FC, set for an MLS debut in March 2015, and will keep in shape by turning out for Australian side Melbourne City (formerly Melbourne Heart) in the meantime Diego Costa, who will try to put his World Cup woes behind him at Chelsea, where he will rub shoulders with international team-mate Cesc Fabregas, who returns to London three years after leaving Arsenal for Barcelona. Luis Suarez from Liverpool, as it provides fans with the enticing prospect of a Barça frontline made up of the Uruguayan striker, Lionel Messi and Neymar Alexis Sanchez, persuaded to leave Barcelona by Arsenal. Ander Herre ...
Massa, read excerpts of your man, Paul Merson's preview before the match. I just love the Dante bit in the 2nd paragraph: "Thiago Silva will be a massive miss in this game because it leaves David Luiz and probably Dante, who everyone goes on about but isn’t really that good, at centre-half. "Dante plays at Bayern Munich where week after week in Germany no-one has a go at him, but when he came up against Real Madrid in the Champions League, he didn’t know what day it was. "He is nowhere near as good as Thiago Silva and all the German players will know his weaknesses and how to get at him, so him and David Luiz at the back? Germany will be licking their lips."

I tuned into my copy of the 2012 Champions League Final. You know, the one in which we beat Bayern Munich, in their own backyard, to win the trophy for the first time in our history. David Luiz close to completing record £40m move to PSG from Chelsea • Clubs in advanced talks over transfer of Brazilian centre-back • Blues hope to complete £31.8m signing of Diego Costa Chelsea are in advanced talks with Paris St Germain over the sale of David Luiz to the Ligue 1 champions with the fee for the Brazilian expected to top the £40m mark, a record for a defender. Discussions between the clubs are on-going and an agreement is anticipated well before the start of the World Cup. David Luiz, a £23.5m signing from Benfica in January 2011, has claimed the Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea but found himself something of a stop-gap at both centre-half and in defensive midfield last season. At 27, and with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich also long-standing admirers, he represents a saleable asset for the London club as they seek to comply with Uefa’s financial fair play regulations. The sale to PSG, who are more bullish about maintaining their lavish spending of recen ...
Paris Saint-Germain closing in on £50m deal for Chelsea star David Luiz could become football's most expensive defender Paris Saint-Germain are closing in on Chelsea defender David Luiz as they look to secure a £50million deal for the Brazilian. The centre-back has been in-and-out of The Blues' first-team this season and has found life under Jose Mourinho tough, which has seen him searching for a move away this Summer in order to play regular first-team football. The 27-year-old has been closely monitored by Spanish and German giants, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but it appears mega-rich French side, PSG have won the race for his signature as they look to wrap up a staggering deal which could see Chelsea rake in £50m. If the transfer goes through, Luiz will become the world's most expensive defender, eclipsing Rio Ferdinand's price-tag of £30m when he signed for Manchester United from Leeds United, and also Thiago Silva's transfer from AC Milan to PSG, which cost the French side roughly £33million ...

Barcelona are prepared to offer former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song to Chelsea as part of a bid for David Luiz. The Spanish club are set to battle with Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain over Luiz, who is expected to be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge. Bayern can use Chelsea's interest in striker Mario Mandzukic as a bargaining tool in their pursuit of Luiz, and Barca will check on whether the Blues want Song, who will leave the Nou Camp this summer and is interested in a return to the Premier League. Barcelona have already offered him to Manchester United and Liverpool, and attempted to generate interest from Tottenham. Like Luiz, Song can play in midfield or defence but it is unclear whether or not Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho would be interested in the 26-year-old. Mourinho has already made Tottenham midfielder Paulinho a target and is primarily ready to sell £30m-rated Luiz to help generate transfer funds, rather than to use him in swap deals. Winger Alexis Sanchez could be a more appealing player ...

Chelsea could be close to a deal to sign Mario Mandzukic after he was reportedly left out of Bayern Munich's Cup Final squad. Bayern head coach Pep Guardiola is understood to have dropped the Croatian striker in the wake of rumours that he could be heading to Stamford Bridge this summer. German newspaper Bild reported yesterday that Mandzukic could be a Chelsea player within days and today SportBild claim that Guardiola said to Mandzukic: "I wish you every success with your new club." The ex-Barcelona boss - who has never seen eye to eye with Blues boss Jose Mourinho - left the player out of his squad to face Borussia Dortmund in Berlin on Saturday. Guardiola has told the press that there's nothing more to it than a tactical decision to use another player but SportBild say they have an inside line at the club. Chelsea are believed to have been in talks with Bayern this week about a possible deal for David Luiz and the Croatian striker's name could well have come up as a makeweight in the proposal or just ...

Bayern Munich planning a massive £25 million swoop on Chelsea May 15, 2014 Pep Guardiola is reportedly attempting a coup against his former employers FC Barcelona. According to reports in the Daily Mail, Bayern Munich have made enquiries with Chelsea over their Brazilian centre back David Luiz. The wild haired defender was all set to leave Stamford Bridge to start a sojourn with the Catalan giants, but Guardiola who is learnt to be a long term admirer of Luiz, could weigh in at the last moment with an offer too good to resist. The one advantage that Barcelona have over the Bavarians however is their ability to offer Luiz a chance to team up with compatriots Dani Alves and Neymar. Luiz is believed to be valued by Chelsea at around £35 million, but Luiz Felipe Scolari has forbidden his players from indulging in any transfer babble, so as to get their undivided attention for his World Cup preparation. David Luiz wanted by Bayern Munich, who have lost two defensive players in six months -
Mourinho willing to let Chelsea star leave for Bayern Munich in £41m January transfer The Portuguese boss is open to allowing Luiz to transfer to Germany. Chelsea defender David Luiz is the subject of interest from German giants Bayern Munich and Jose Mourinho is willing to let the Brazilian leave in January for £41m, reports A Bola. The 26-year-old was one of the Blues best players last season, but Mourinho has concerns over Luiz’s defensive capabilities and has generally preferred a partnership of Gary Cahill and captain John Terry. This lack of game time is frustrating for the South American and the chance to switch to the Allianz Arena would be a prospect most players would find difficult to turn down. Bayern are currently a treble-winning club after securing the Bundesliga title, German Cup and Champions League in 2012/13. Since then maverick coach Pep Guardiola has also taken over as manager and the Spaniard is a great draw for top players. Luiz would also be able to link up with fellow Brazilia ...
Bayern Munich are interested in signing out-of-favour Chelsea defender David Luiz, according to the Metro. The Brazilian international, who is currently side-lined with a knee injury, has featured in just eleven of the Blues twenty-one competitive games this season with Gary Cahill and John Terry proving to be Jose Mourinho’s preferred defensive partnership. Luiz was linked with a move to Barcelona during the summer, and his future at Stamford Bridge has been thrown into doubt once more with the German and European Champions ready to make a move in an attempt to secure his services. The 26 year old has thirty-three international caps, and may welcome a move as he looks to be certain of a place in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s World Cup squad in his native Brazil next summer.
Willian scored his first goal for Brazil as they comfortably defeated Honduras 5-0 in Miami, with our three other Brazilians also featuring. David Luiz captained the side in the absence of Thiago Silva, and went close to scoring with a header in the first half. He was replaced with 73 minutes played, by which time Brazil were four goals up. Oscar also started the game, making way for Ramires in the 65th minute. The latter went close to adding a sixth late on but his dinked effort was well saved. But it was Willian who had the greatest impact on the game following his 47th minute introduction. It was his cross that Dante, the Bayern Munich defender, converted in the 55th minute to double Brazil's advantage, Bernard having opened the scoring in the first period. Maicon netted a third before Willian , playing in his first game for Brazil since 2011, got in on the act himself, neatly converting a Hulk cut-back on 70 minutes to make the score 4-0. Hulk added a fifth to ensure another emphatic Brazil friendly w ...
Jose Mourinho is happy with David Luiz just the way he is, according to the Brazil defender. Luiz was left out of Chelsea’s 18-man squad for Saturday’s derby win over Fulham before making a winning return to the side in Tuesday’s 2-0 League Cup triumph at Swindon. Barcelona and Bayern Munich were interested in signing the Samba Star this summer and some have suggested Luiz’s outlandish style does not fit in with Mourinho’s tactical thinking. Quizzed on whether the Chelsea boss has asked him to modify his game, Luiz said: “No. He hasn’t asked anything. He asked me to play my football at a high level, in a high intensity and attitude, just that. Like all the players. “He is a manager that wants everyone to work hard, not just David Luiz.” But asked why he didn't seem to be as automatic a pick for Mourinho, as he was for interim boss Rafael Benitez, Luiz said he was baffled. “I don’t know,” added the centre half. “I train hard every day, like I did under Rafa so I have a privilege t ...
Both manager Pep Guardiola & sporting director Matthias Sammer have denied that Bayern Munich want to sign defender David Luiz from Chelsea.
John Obi Mikel's first English Premier League goal helped end Chelsea's run of four winless games as they beat west London rivals Fulham 2-0 on Saturday. Mikel struck six minutes from fulltime against Fulham with a close-range half-volley after Oscar had opened the scoring early in the second half at Stamford Bridge. The three points took Jose Mourinho's team to the top of the table, after a testing period in which they lost to Bayern Munich in the Uefa Super Cup final and were beaten by Everton and Basle. Mourinho made a big statement with his team selection, with Juan Mata and David Luiz left out of the matchday squad altogether. Fulham, with three ex-Chelsea players in their midfield – Scott Parker, Damien Duff and Steve Sidwell – had the best of the early chances. Duff made ground on the right flank and when the ball broke to Alex Kacaniklic, he crossed for Sidwell to head just over the crossbar. Darren Bent had a clearer opportunity when Pajtim Kasami played him clean through on goal, but his tam ...

Bayern Munich will launch a stunning £35m bid for Chelsea's David Luiz.
PEP WANTS LUIZ? During a Confederations Cup tournament which has supposedly caused a shift of power in international football, David Luiz formed an integral part of Luiz Felipe Scolari’s awakening of the Selecao beast from it’s 23rd-FIFA-ranked-slumber. Often criticised for shirking defensive responsibility in domestic football, Luiz proved himself to be willing to give all of his efforts for the cause, which was shown in a microcosm by his heroic goal-line clearance to deny Pedro in the final. It’s no surprise, given the 26-year-old’s progression since arriving from Benfica, that new Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has been linked with the gung *** centre-half, with the Daily Mail claiming the Samba star is high on the Spaniard’s wanted list. Keen to burst forward when in possession, and with the defensively capable Javi Martinez deployed infront of him, it’s definitely possible that there is a place in the Bundesliga champions’ outfit for David Luiz.

Bundesliga Bayern not interested in Luiz, no Gomez sale yet Bayern Munich sports director Matthias Sammer has said the club have no interest in signing Chelsea's David Luiz and denied any deal had been reached to sell Mario Gomez to Fiorentina. Newspaper speculation had linked Chelsea defender Luiz with a big money move to Bayern as Pep Guardiola is believed to be a big fan of the Brazilian. However, when asked if Luiz was a player the club was interested in, he simply said "No" and refused to expand on his answer. In regards to Gomez, Fiorentina have already declared their interest in the striker who has also been linked with Napoli and clubs in the Premier League. Sky Sports Italia had reported that a fee of around €18m had been agreed between the clubs but Sammer said the club "had not yet received a bid which they are satisfied with" for Gomez and added that the striker is expected to travel to Bayern's pre-season training camp in Trentino.

CHELSEA NEWS! Only five blues stars are certain starters for the coming season under Jose Mourinho -Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard, and Oscar. Spainish wizard, Juan Mata and Brazil defender, David Luiz are not among the five. And Fernando Torres (who is wanted at the Emirate) could also be waving farewell to the Premier League this summer. Mourinho is thought to prefer Oscar in the No.10 role supporting a main striker, believing the Brazilian poses more attacking threat than Mata. This means Mourinho wil try to bring in six players before the transfer window closes -knowing a fee within the region of £35m from Barca for David Luiz could help fund new recruits. Brazilian star Hulk of Zenit St Petersburg, Mario Gomez of Bayern Munich and AC Milan hitman El Shaarawy are all on Mourinho's wishlist -along with Manchester City's Edin Dzeko.
Marca splash with the claim today that Luis Suarez agreed personal terms “weeks ago” on a move to Real Madrid. However, Suarez is now exploring other offers (which could include Premier League rivals Manchester City) due to the delay in Real Madrid making an offer to Liverpool. Now Carlo Ancelotti is installed as Real Madrid coach, Los Blancos will decide whether to bid 47 million euros (his release clause, according to Marca) for Suarez. The decision rests with Ancelotti and Marca suggest Suarez now has other offers available, comparable in financial terms. Suarez has reportedly grown impatient whilst at the Confederations Cup and new Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola is also tracking developments. Much like many other players who could be on the move (e.g. Gonzalo Higuain, David Luiz), the transfer market now looks set to get busier after Carlo Ancelotti and Laurent Blanc were installed at Real Madrid and PSG, respectively on Tuesday. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been very busy in the transfer ...

Barcelona have stepped up their interest in Chelsea star David Luiz as they look to rebuild following their humiliating Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich.
Brazil have named their squad for friendlies against Italy and Russia, with Real Madrid's Kaka recalled for both matches. Playmaker Ronaldinho has been left out after disappointing performance in the defeat to England at Wembley and failing to impress domestically in South America. Santos starlet Neymar, Paris Saint-Germain new boy Lucas Moura and Bayern Munich defender Dante are three other names that have made the cut ahead of the March matches. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari failed to select Kaka for his first squad as coach since his return to the post, but the midfielder could get the chance to prove his worth after impressing for Real in February. Chelsea coach Roberto Di Matteo admitted his side had been slightly fortunate to come away with a 4-0 win over Danish minnows FC Nordsjaelland in their second Champions League outing. The result left the defending champions level on points with forthcoming opponents Shakhtar Donetsk at the top of Group E, but the visitors had to weather several uncomfortable moments at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium. Had Petr Cech not clawed Joshua John's shot onto the post in the 73rd minute, Chelsea would have seen the advantage procured by Juan Mata's 33rd-minute opener cancelled out by their enterprising opponents. However, Cech produced what Di Matteo described as "a crucial save", and further goals from David Luiz, Mata and Ramires added a slightly misleading gloss to what had been a far from fluent performance. "We expected a difficult game and that's exactly how it turned out to be," said the Italian, who led Chelsea to a penalty shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in last season's final. "We were a bit slow out of ...
Belarus champions BATE Borisov caused the shock of the night when they beat last season's finalists Bayern Munich 3-1 for their first ever home win in the Champions League on Tuesday. Goals by Aleksandr Pavlov, Vitali Rodionov and Renan Bressan took them top of Group F after they recorded their first victory in the competition against Lille two weeks ago having failed to win any of their 12 games from last season and 2008-09. Unlike Bayern, European Champions Chelsea had no problem as they brushed aside debutants FC Nordsjaelland 4-0 in Group E in Copenhagen with Juan Mata netting twice and David Luiz and Ramires also on the scoresheet. Barcelona enjoyed a 2-0 triumph over old rivals Benfica in Lisbon where Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas scored in Group G. However the victory was marred as defender Carles Puyol fell awkwardly and dislocated his left elbow in the later stages and Sergio Busquets was sent off in the 89th minute. Celtic got their first away victory in the competition since 1986 as Giorgios ...

Chelsea defender David Luiz has revealed that he played the weekend’s Champions League final with a hamstring injury. The Brazil international was brought back into the Blues starting line-up for Saturday’s penalty shootout win over Bayern Munich after about a month on the sidelines with the problem but was able to get through the initial 90 minutes and extra-time before scoring from the spot to help the West Londoners to a famous victory. “I was nervous about my leg and played injured,” Luiz told the Daily Mirror. “I was out for 35 days and came back to training. But two days before the final I had a bad pain again in my hamstring and it meant that maybe I wasn’t going to be fit to play in the game. “On Friday I had to have a fitness test to see if I could play but even in the game, after 20 minutes I could feel it again, feel it bad, and then I ended up playing 120 minutes. “But I told myself I was not going to let it make me come off. I said, ‘I have worked all my life for this. This ...
Chelsea stunned Bayern Munich in a dramatic penalty shoot-out at the Allianz Arena to win the Champions League for the first time. Thomas Mueller's late header put Bayern on the brink of victory on home territory but Didier Drogba levelled things up with a bullet header at the death before coolly converting the decisive spot-kick. The tournament which gave Chelsea their greatest agony when they lost on penalties to Manchester United four years ago in Moscow has now delivered the greatest glory in their 107-year history. Juan Mata missed Chelsea's first penalty but David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole were all successful. Philipp Lahm, Mario Gomez and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer were all on target for Bayern. The momentum shifted decisively when Cech denied Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger hit the post to leave Chelsea on the brink and present Drogba with his moment of destiny.
Extra time first periodIt was a bright start by the Blues but then with three minutes gone, Drogba unnecessarily caught the heel of Ribery and gave away a penalty. It fell to Robben to try to beat his friend Cech but the pressure told, as it had done on Lionel Messi in the semi-final, and the Chelsea keeper was able to save low down to his left as Robben couldn't find the corner. Penalty shoot-outAt the Bayern Munich end of the stadium, Cech faced the first one from Lahm and got a hand to it but couldn't keep it out. Mata then shot too centrally and had his saved by Neuer. Gomez found the bottom corner to make it 2-0 to Bayern but David Luiz scored his powerfully and it was 2-1. The Bayern keeper took the next one, and beat Cech low to the left so it was 3-1 to the Germans. Lampard roofed his to bring the score back to 3-2 before Olic had his saved by the outstretched arm of Cech and Cole drew the scores level at 3-3 with a crisp strike. Schweinsteiger was next up and the pressure told as he hit the post. ...

Gary Cahill could start in his place while Branislav Ivanovicis available. Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been out with a thigh strain but is back in contention, while David Villa and Eric Abidal remain sidelined. Keeping 11 on the pitch is crucial Frank Lampard "Chelsea were strong in 2009 and this year they will be very strong, dangerous and focused," said Iniesta.
