Ministers deliver early Christmas present to local farmers Tuesday 10 December 2013Justice Minister David Ford and Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill today announced a funding package to encourage farmers to fit security devices to their machinery. Famers in farm theft hotspots across Northern Ireland will have access to support funding to fit Tracker and Cesar security devices which police can use to locate and recover stolen machinery or equipment. The Rural Crime Unit initiative is supported by the Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), NFU Mutual and Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Announcing details of the scheme, David Ford said: “Farming communities have been hard hit by agri-crime in recent times. The theft of machinery, in some cases particularly high value machinery, is distressing for the victims and can damage the sustainability of farming businesses. Therefore it is important that farmers take steps to protect their farms, their ...
NI legal aid system not fit for purpose says report The system for administering tens of millions of pounds of legal aid payments in Northern Ireland is not fit for purpose, inspectors have said. The Criminal Justice Inspection (CJI) report calls for radical reform of the NI Legal Services Commission (NILSC) to combat spiralling costs. Justice Minister David Ford said he remained determined to reduce the costs. The NILSC said it fully accepted the need for reform. Legal aid costs in Northern Ireland are still the most expensive in the world despite Mr Ford saying that reducing the bill was a policy priority.

Fr. Sean Mc Manus visits Marian Friday, February 22, 2013 – Marian Price was today visited by Fr. Sean Mc Manus, President of the Washington-based Irish National Caucus. He spent ninety minutes with her, accompanied by her husband Jerry Mc Glinchey and her attorney Peter Corrigan. Fr. Mc Manus said: I have been raising Marian’s case with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Congress, and I wanted to visit her to show both personal and Irish-American solidarity. My heart was broken and my soul outraged by how this heroic Irishwoman has been treated. This seriously ill, lovely, soft-spoken woman should not be in prison. Her persecution – yes, persecution – makes a mockery of the Irish peace-process, questions the whole judicial system, and raises doubt as to whether there has, indeed, been a “ new beginning” to policing in Northern Ireland. Surely Peter Robinson, Martin Mc Guinness, David Ford and the NI Secretary of State must know that there is something rotten with their government’s t ...

NATIONALIST councils which do not fly the Union Flag at all should be made to fly the flag on designated days, the Alliance Party has said. In detailed proposals aimed at removing sectarianism from society launched at Stormont yesterday, Alliance called on the Executive to: “Agree that the Union Flag is flown over public and civic buildings in Northern Ireland on designated days as defined by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.” This would stop unionist councils such as Lisburn voting to fly the Union Flag on every day. But the biggest impact would be on nationalist councils in the west of the Province, 11 of which refuse to fly the national flag at all. Alliance leader David Ford yesterday launched the proposals at Stormont, an indication that after the Stormont Executive’s repeated failure to bring forward a Cohesion, Sharing and Integration (CSI) document to tackle sectarianism, Alliance is now attempting to generate debate and put pressure on the DUP and Sinn Fein. Alliance minister Ste ...
