Stephen Lawrence "Steve" Winwood was born on May 12,1948 in Handsworth, Birmingham, England. At the age of 14, Winwood joined the Spencer Davis Group. As a teenager, Winwood played organ and guitar, backing blues singers such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley on their Uk tours. In April 1967, he formed Traffic with Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason & Chris Wood. In 1968 Winwood played the organ on the song "Voodoo Chile" on the Jimi Hendrix album Electric Ladyland. He formed the supergroup Blind Faith in 1969 with Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Ric Grech.
NEWARK - Pop quiz: What Rock and Roll Hall of Famer cofounded Traffic, played on Jimi Hendrix's apocalyptic blowout of "All Along the Watchtower" and even joined Fleetwood Mac for a brief stint in the mid-'90s? Answer: Dave Mason, and he's coming to Newark to perform at 7:30 p.m.
January 21st, 1968, Jimi Hendrix recorded his version of the Bob Dylan song 'All Along the Watchtower' at Olympic Studios in London. Rolling Stone Brian Jones and Dave Mason from Traffic both played on the session. The track was released in the US as a single in 1968, peaking at No.20.
Had a great time at The Barns at Wolf Trap tonight. I criticize my own rock-and-roll education for not knowing that Dave Mason was not only inducted in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic, but also wrote some of the biggest hits for no less than Delaney and Bonnie ("Only You Know And I Know"), Joe Cocker ("Feelin' Alright") and, kind of incredibly, Jimi Hendrix ("All Along The Watchtower"). He closed with that tune, and rocked it. [ed: Too incredibly, it turns out – apparently he did not write Watchtower, but did play guitar on the version Hendrix recorded. Thanks, Ward.] A true legend, still cranking it out. Thanks for a fabulous concert, and thanks to Leslie for the invite and the ticket!
Love this picture of Dave Mason & Jimi Hendrix...Dave was very close w Jimi and they did some amazing work together!
Bob Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower and sung it before Dave Mason or Jimi Hendrix
Liner notes: When Jimi Hendrix was recording Electric Ladyland he was jamming extensivley with Traffic. One night before a studio audience when some of the members of Traffic were there they recorded the classic tune "All Along the Watchtower" Dave Mason, the lead guitarist of Traffic was ther, as was Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. On the track Brian Jones was playing piano, but it was cut as Jimi didn't like it. Brian Jones then played backup guitar. Dave Mason played the twelve string guitar on the track. Jimi's regular bassist Noel Redding ws getting bored with how long it was taking to record the song, so he left and went to the local bar and got drunk. As a result Jimi Hendrix played the bass on the track and added other acoustic guitars in the background. The rest is history, but this began a rift between Jimi Hnedrix and Noel Redding which lead to evetual expulsion from the band. During that whole period Traffic and the Jimi Hendrix Experience were considering forming a Super Group with Steve Wi ...
Our old friend Dave Mason on stage with the great Jimi Hendrix...God what I'd give to have been at that show!
DMJH.mp4 Great jam with Jimi Hendrix and Dave Mason (of Traffic).
Jimi Hendrix, jamming with Dave Mason and Chris Wood of "Traffic" in Berkeley, CA in 1977. Rare footage from Dave Mason.
Thanks to Dave Mason for sharing a bit of his history. This is TRULY ROCK AND ROLL AT ITS MOST AMAZING!!!
Wow! Bonnie Raitt was in top form. I have never heard her better. She blew the roof off tonight. Best yet, Mike Finnigan on keyboards. Who is he you ask? Toured and sessioned for the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Etta James, Sam Moore, Crosby Stills and Nash, Dave Mason, Buddy Guy, Manhattan Transfer, Taj Mahal, Michael McDonald, Maria Muldaur, Peter Frampton, Cher, Ringo Starr, Leonard Cohen, Tower of Power, Rod Stewart, Tracy Chapman, Los Lonely Boys, and Destruments. Unbelievable! What craftsmanship. Amazing.
Saw two rock & roll legends last night--Dave Mason and Joe Cocker. They played Feelin Alright together and Mason played All Along the Watchtower on the acoustic 12 string just as he did on the Jimi Hendrix recording. Still rocking in their 60's!!!
I must just be in a whimsical kind of mood because so far today I've listened to 'McGough & McGear' which is basically Mike McCartney (Paul's brother) and some other dude doing singing/spoken-word poetry comedy to background music provided by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Graham Nash, Dave Mason and Paul Mccartney. Pretty lightweight stuff but entertaining nonetheless. So entertaining, in fact, to lead me to dig out a couple of my Bonzo Dog Band CDs to spin. Right now 'Urban Spaceman' is blaring out my speakers and I'm loving every second of it. Yup, 'Whimsical' is the word of the day. My day anyhow.
Dave Mason on left & Chris Wood right from Traffic with Jimi Hendrix...
This is a music slide show mix I put together. The mix contains many pictures of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and Dave Mason, all performing "All Along the Watcht...
