It seems that every sports columnist would like to remind you of the lack of any passing threat in 2013. (ranked 29th) What you don't see is that Steve Smith ranked 4th the NFL in yards after the catch. Sure, collectively the Panthers receivers would average 10 catches a game while the Panthers would rush more than 100 yards in at least 14 games. The plan is to replace those 10 catches. If that's the plan, then who's going to rank in the top 5 for yards after the catch in 2014? Ideally, you'd want to pull the trigger early on a receiver, right? Think again. Currently the Panthers face a very real and necessary need to reinforce the offensive line that helped make Cam Newton the most sacked/hit quarterback over the last 3 years. Reinforcing the line would not only improve protection of the quarterback, but also open up the run game and gives Newton time to read the field, while giving receivers an actual chance to get open or create seperation. Dave Gettleman is a quotable personality. He likes to build fr ...
After watching the highlights of Jason Avant and Jerricho Cotchery, the message from Dave Gettleman to the fans is clear. "We were tired of drops too". Avant and Cotchery are two of the most sure handed receivers in the NFL and they along with Greg Olsen will serve as a massive security blanket to Cam Newton. We are still lacking a true playmaker, even with Underwood's speed, but that can be added in the draft as late as the third round. OT is our top priority and if Gettleman finds a gem corner prospect in the second, it would make sense to nab him, and wait for the third round to draft a receiver like Mike Davis (Texas), Donte Moncrief (Mississippi), or Cody Lattimer (Indiana) in the third. All three are raw, but could learn under Avant and Cotchery as well as WR coach Ricky Proehl. Though the offseason started out slow, it would appear as if Gettleman has the tools in the draft to right the ship. And remember, he was w\able to retain Greg Hardy. More later today about my final dish on the decision to r ...
The Carolina Panthers are finalizing a trade that will send a third round pick in the 2014 draft to the Baltimore Ravens for wide receiver Steve Smith. Smith was released by the Panthers in March and less than a month later the team realized its starting receivers areJerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood, prompting the move. Trading for Smith is a bold decision that upgrades the receiving corps immediately, while ensuring they're not on the hook long term for a high salary. No official statement has been released at this time, but it's expected the veteran wide receiver will return to wearing his beloved No.89 when he rejoins the Panthers. "Steve brings a veteran presence that the roster is currently missing at wide receiver. It's not every day you have a chance to have a player of his caliber on your roster, so it makes perfect sense to execute the move now." It's interesting to see Dave Gettleman eschew his slow, methodical team building in favor of a quick burst, but at least the offense will semi-com ...
The Carolina Panthers paid Steve Smith to go away, then let Ted Ginn and Brandon LaFell walk out the door. Hakeem Nicks seemed like a logical fit, but General Manager Dave Gettleman reportedly told the hometown kid he was better off catching passes from Andrew Luck, not Cam Newton. Yes, Gettleman's strategy at wide receiver remains unclear. What we do know is that Gettleman has to sign somebody. As Chris Wesseling astutely noted, current wideouts on the Panthers roster have combined for two catches in the NFL. That is not a typo. We learned Sunday that Jerricho Cotchery will will visit with the Panthers on Monday. That's certainly a start: Cotchery is a nice player coming off a 10-touchdown season in Pittsburgh. But Cotchery's best fit is as a supporting act, not the main attraction. How about James Jones, then? The former Green Bay Packers receiver told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Sunday he "would love the opportunity to play for the Carolina Panthers. I would love to play with Cam." Jones makes sense for ...
Interesting Panthers GM and former Giants executive Dave Gettleman wanted no part of Nicks even after releasing Steve Smith.
Have to be honest, thought the contract numbers for Captain Munnerlyn and Ted Ginn Jr. were high. Can't blame Dave Gettleman for passing.
Around the NFL The Carolina Panthers made the expected official on Thursday, releasing franchise stalwart Steve Smith after 13 seasons with the team. Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer reported that Smith gave Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman five teams as potential trade partners. No trade materialized, obviously, but let's take a closer look at how realistic those potential landing spots might be. Baltimore Ravens NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Thursday morning that the Ravens planned to be aggressive in their pursuit of Smith once he hits the open market. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Smith will visit the Ravens on Friday. If Smith still has some gas in the tank, he represents the replacement for Anquan Boldin that Baltimore never found in 2013. This is Smith's most likely landing spot. Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys are releasing Miles Austin and could use a slot receiver to line up alongside Dez Bryant and Terrance Williams. Smith does strike us as a Jerry Jones kind of player, ...

āStatement from GM Dave Gettleman on the release of Steve Smith: >>
On Hakeem Nicks, Panthers G.M. Dave Gettleman could be the man to watch
Dave Gettleman is really putting everything (including HIS job) on the line, isn't he? Granted Steve Smith is in decline, but he's STILL the best receiver on the team, hands down. I'm thinking Gettleman must really know something we don't, because this could very easily blow up in his face. His moves last year were near perfect. Let's pray he is much, much smarter than we give him credit for.
So, Dave Gettleman, who is Cam Newton going to throw the ball to with Steve Smith gone and your Nos. 2 & 3 receivers free-agents? I have a broken ankle I'm recovering from, but at 6'3" 205lbs., I'd be happy to suit up. Call me.
Sources tell the Charlotte Observer that Panthers GM Dave Gettleman views Steve Smith as a "distraction," and wants to turn the locker room over to Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly. Smith's agent has declared his Panthers career through, and it sounds like the feeling is very much mutual. Smith's excellent career has been fueled by one mighty chip on his shoulder, but that can be an exhausting personality trait for teammates and coaches. Some fresh air might do Smith well as he rides off into the sunset of his career.
And now another "Special Comment" about why the Carolina Panthers dropped the ball after not re-signing Steve Smith, and what does this mean to me as a Panthers fan. Ā In one of the worst decisions made in the 19-year history of the Carolina Panthers, the Steve Smith era officially came to an end, according to his agent, Derrick Fox who said that "Steve Smith is not going to play with the Carolina Panthers next year", and to me, this is just absolute and complete B.S.! Ā I have been following this team since their 1995 inception, and I have stuck with them through good times and bad, but today, this move may possibly signal the beginning of the end of my time as a Carolina Panthers fan after what happened just now, and this decision that Dave Gettleman, the Panthers General Manager pulled not too long ago was in my opinion, the dumbest, stupidest, heck, it was something I would like to call THE WORST DECISION TO HURT A FANBASE THAT HAS SUPPORTED THIS PANTHERS TEAM SINCE IT'S FOUNDING AND TODAY, WE ARE IN ...
Just realized a Panthers-Nicks deal would mean Jay-Z and Dave Gettleman negotiating. Iād watch that sitcom.
True. I just hope GM Dave Gettleman drafts the top LT available to replace the retired Jordan Gross. Your thoughts?
Jordan Gross acknowledges Dave Gettleman put him in a tough spot last year, but it was the best for the team.
What said about Mitchell: "GM Dave Gettleman made a smart value signing after Mitchell was under the radar in Oakland. (Cont.)
Jordan Gross thanks Marty Hurney "Changed my life." Also thanked Dave Gettleman, says even though I didn't like you very much last offseason
Dave Gettleman on Jordan Gross: "Jordan has been a great Panther and he will be missed."
Replacing Jordan Gross won't be easy for GM Dave Gettleman might have to get creative. By me:
Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera and General Manager Dave Gettleman were equally noncommittal on Steve Smith's future. Will the wide receiver be in Carolina come next season?
If there's one major takeaway from Carolina Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman's comments, it is this: don't expect the Panthers to make a big splash in free agency. For fans expecting Charlotte, N.C. native Hakeem Nicks to dawn the No. 88 along Steve Smith, it's not likely to happen. As...

If you inherit a 7-9 team that was $16 million over the salary cap and turn that team into a 12-4 team with a division title and $19 million under the cap(I think) in one calendar year then you should be the 2013 NFL Executive Of The Year. Period. Dave Gettleman.stand the *** up, take a bow and grab your award!!!
to extremes at the midpoint of the NFL season with the 5-3 Panthers: Best call by unsung coach: On fourth-and-1 from the 14 Sunday, the Panthers ran a beautiful play-action pass and Cam Newton threw to a wide-open Greg Olsen for a TD (the end of the play is pictured above). Little-known fact -- that call was actually made by tight ends coach Pete Hoener, according to offensive coordinator Mike Shula. Biggest surprise (defense): Safety Mike Mitchell has tied for the team lead with three interceptions and has added an element of physicality. Biggest surprise (offense): Wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. has two touchdowns of 40-plus yards and has also made several tough catches in traffic, which is supposed to be his weakness. Both Ginn and Mitchell were key offseason pickups by new General Manager Dave Gettleman -- and came cheaply. Worst turnover: DeAngelo Williams' fumble inside the 10 against Seattle cost the Panthers a chance to beat one of the NFL's premier teams. Williams has rebounded nicely, though, and is ...

CHARLOTTE, N.Ā Nike Free 5.0+ Laufschuhe BlauĀ .C. -- While several coaches around the NFL found themselves without a job Monday, the Carolina Panthers Ron Rivera escaped unscathed -- at least for now. Riveras future remains twisting pending the outcome of a post-season meeting with owner Jerry Richardson. Its unclear when that meeting will come. Richardson remained mum on the second -year coachs status one day after the Panthers won their fourth straight game to finish 7-9, a one-game improvement over 2011. He declined comment on Riveras job security through the public relations staff. Rivera said Monday at a news conference he hasnt spoken to Richardson about his future since Sundays 44-38 victory at New Orleans, but indicated that the meeting is upcoming. NFL week is quite a slate of games. If Aaron Rodgers can play at the level he has all of his career, he should be able to take advantage of a poor Detroit secondary.the game is at Lambeau, Cobb and Nelson are healthy, its time for Green Bay's O-line and D linebackers to step up and show the world that they are still a very respectable team.they do this today, Packers 31 Detroit 20 No Vince Wilfork means no significant run defense by the Patriots.Bernard and Green Ellis rush for a combined 250 yards.Dalton is able to then effectively use play-action, A J Green has at least one TD, and there will be at least another through the air, Geno is in Brady's face all day long.Bengals 30 Patriots 24 Ryan Fitzpatrick returns as a starting QB, and even though his Harvard credentials will be referenced at least a dozen times during the game, no Ivy League education will be able to prepare him for KC's defense...Chiefs 35 Titans 10, and the game will not be as close as that score might indicate. I'm glad to see Dave Gettleman's making moves. Beason has been a liability every time he's been on the field the last two seasons.
Dave gettleman has been working for the giants all along, next he will trade us greg hardy for a water boy and a 4 piece supreme at bojangle
Dave Gettleman may just be the Nucky Thompson of the NFL. He's behind the scenes, in a very quiet manner, pulling the right strings.
The Panthers have agreed to a trade that would send Jon Beason to the New York Giants in exchange for a late-round draft pick, a source informed of the process told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport on Thursday night. The deal is contingent on Beason passing a Friday physical, which is no certainty considering his checkered injury history. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports initially reported the trade scenario. It makes sense that the two teams would connect on a trade, as Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman worked with Giants General Manager Jerry Reese for years in the Big Apple. After splitting time evenly with Chase Blackburn in the Panthers' first two games this season, Beason played just one snap in the third game. It's ironic that he's been replaced by a player the Giants allowed to walk in free agency. Although Beason started all 64 games while earning three Pro Bowl selections from 2007 to 2010, he has played just seven games since tearing his Achilles tendon in the 2011 season opener. Beason's primary . ...
And can we acknowledge the outstanding job that GM Dave Gettleman is doing for the Panthers?!?! Lightyears away from that terrible Hurney!
Even if it is just a late round pick in trade for Beason, Dave Gettleman is quite the talent scout. We'll get someone better than average. Mark my words. -KT
CHARLOTTE - Defensive backs wish Panthers wide receiver Ted Ginn still had something weighing on him. Maybe that would help slow down one of the fastest players in the NFL. "When I came to Carolina I had a burden on me," Ginn said. "I just wanted to get it off." The burden? A stigma that was firmly stuck to Ginn's reputation; a stigma that he was nothing more than a return man. "I knew I could play punt return and kickoff return," said Ginn, whose 6, 978 combined kick return yards rank fourth in the NFL since 2007. "But I always wanted to be more involved in the offense." The burden has been lifted, and Ginn looks as explosive as ever in his seventh season. It started in the preseason finale against Pittsburgh, when Ginn burst onto the scene with 35- and 87-yard touchdown receptions. The week prior, he displayed his trademark return skills, returning a punt 74 yards for a touchdown against the Ravens. He finished the preseason with nine catches for 214 yards, and the question quickly became could he conti ...

I hate our new g.m. he is the only reason Beason is getting trade to the giants. Hey Dave Gettleman you can go jump off a Fu* cliff for all I care. Beason is my favorite player and a 3 time pro bowler. ***
Sad to see Jon Beason go if the reports are true but its a business and I fully trust Dave Gettleman to get the Panthers to the top

Erik Spanberg has a story that is sure to set off some concern in the Carolinas. Spanberg reports that Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has mandated the team be sold within two years of his death. Richardson, 76, appeared to be in good health at a Tuesday news conference to introduce new General Manager Dave Gettleman. But Richardson had a heart transplant four years ago. The news of the mandate is the first time weāve heard anything about Richardsonās succession plan, which has been the topic of much speculation since he fired sons Jon and Mark as team executives in 2009. Prior to that, it had always been assumed the sons eventually would own the team. The news of the mandate comes at a time when the Panthers have been in talks with Charlotte leaders about getting funding for renovations to Bank of America Stadium. Government officials have seemed receptive toward financing improvements to a stadium that has been sold out for all but two home games in franchise history. But the news of Richardsonās ...

The New York Post reports Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Jets' GM vacancy. It's unclear why Ross pulled out of the Jets' search, but it's quite clear there's something pushing candidates away from Gang Green. Ross was a finalist for the Panthers' GM job, but was beaten out by fellow Giants' front-office man Dave Gettleman. Ross will remain with the Giants as perhaps GM Jerry Reese's top assistant. The Jets, meanwhile, will continue to search high and low for someone willing to take on their cap issues and Mark Sanchez. Source: Brian Costello
