Born Charles Westover in Coopersville, Michigan, on December 30, 1934, rocker Del Shannon claimed legendary country-western singer Hank Williams as an early influence, but his first record was unadulterated rock: the classic "Runaway" in 1961, highlighted by Shannon's falsetto and keyboardist Max Crook's wailing Musitron (an invention of his). It shot to in both the US and the UK. He had several follow-up hits, including "Hats Off to Larry" and "Little Town Flirt", but his last big hit came in 1965, with "Keep Searchin' ". His career decline didn't keep him from working, however, and he had a few modest hits, notably a cover of Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance?". Shannon spent much of the late 1960s and early 1970s touring Great Britain, where he found a more receptive and admiring audience than he did in the US. Shannon's career slowed greatly in the 1970s, in part due to his alcoholism. Welsh rock singer Dave Edmunds produced the Shannon single "And the Music Plays On" in 1974. In 1978 he stopped dri ...
No Depression comes full circle? Funny, I've been riding with my boss Paul Barrasso in the van as we speed around the region. He likes music a lot but isn't as maniacal about it as I am or most of y'all out there on my friends list. He channel surfs the radio alot and we end up listening more to what passes as the "country" radio (WKLB) in this town more times than not.and damned if it doesn't sound A LOT like the country rock / roots / Americana / no depression stuff we all dug in the 80's (Los Lobos, Rank & File, True Believers, Bottle Rockets, Dwight Yoakam, Robbie Fulks, Jason & the Scorchers, BoDeans, Blasters, Long Ryders, Georgia Satellites, early Wilco, even early Neil Young, CCR, Dave Edmunds, solo Keith Richards, etc.) I've been Shazaming some of these tunes and tracking down some of these artists. I like this Doug Strahan guy a lot. I like that Jason Aldean "Johnny Cash" a lot too. It sure as *** beats what passes for pop or rock radio lately. Somewhere Gram Parsons is smiling.
MATCH REPORTS 17th & 18th MAY Kenilworth v Olton & WW Warwickshire Cricket League Premier Division - 1st XI The Firsts had to settle for a draw as they were unable to chase down Olton’s 254-4 ending 32 runs short at close of play in their Premier Division League match. In reply, Kenilworth looked solid with skipper Dave Edmunds hitting a impressive 84 in which he smashed 8 sixes and 3 boundaries. James Nason chipped in with a solid 66 (10 x 4) whilst Guy Pearson was on unbeaten on 42 (6 x 4) as the side ended the day on a very creditable 222-7. Kenilworth v. Today, the 45th anniversary of the final Beatles live performance atop the Apple Corps HQ in London’s Savile Row, would have been the obvious occasion for a play-through of the ‘Let It Be’ album, but we like to ski off-piste (though we’re scared of skiing itself) down at Holt Vinyl Vault (HVV), so today, for no particular reason other than the whim of your ever-obliging stampface-supremo-come-DJ, became HVV Ladies Day. Though Holt is a Georgian Market Town where the Duchesses of Cornwall and Cambridge have been known to enjoy a bit of high-end retail therapy, neither have been spotted inside The Vinyl Vault thus far, and you may therefore be assured that HVV Ladies Day was as far removed from Ladies Day at, say, Royal Ascot than you could imagine. HVV Ladies Day began with kd Lang & The Reclines’ ‘Angel With A Lariat’ (Sire 1987, mint copy, £4), produced by Dave Edmunds. I have long admired kd’s work without being fully acquainted with her extensive catalogue. My admiration stems from the ...
Jammin out to some Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe and Rockpile here at BC'S.
When is a band not a band? That's an interesting question when you're talking about Rockpile. Dave Edmunds (possibly best known for this song: recorded an album in 1970 called Rockpile. While on tour for that album, he called his backing band Rockpile. That band actually split up after the tour. Six years later, after Edmunds signed with Led Zeppelin's record label, he did another solo album and called the backup band Rockpile once more. This time, the backup band included bassist/vocalist, Nick Lowe. Nick Lowe had previously been in the band Brinsley Schwarz (the band that had recorded the original version of this little ditty written by Lowe: After Edmunds' solo album, he and Lowe decided that they should form a regular version of Rockpile. They rounded out the group with Billy Bremner on guitar/vocals and Terry Williams on drums. While Edmunds and Lowe hit it off pretty well musically, they were actually under contracts with different labels. As a result, Rockpile weren't able to release albums as a gr ...
Jeffrey "Jeff" Lynne (born 30 December 1947) is an English songwriter, composer, arranger, singer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer who gained fame as the leader and sole constant member of Electric Light Orchestra. He was later a co-founder and member of the Traveling Wilburys together with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. Lynne has produced recordings for artists such as the Beatles, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Brian Wilson, Randy Newman, Roy Orbison, Dave Edmunds, Del Shannon and Tom Petty. He has co-written songs with Petty and also with George Harrison, whose 1987 album Cloud Nine was co-produced by Lynne and Harrison. Among the many compositions to his credit are such well-known hits as "Livin' Thing", "Evil Woman", "Turn to Stone", "Do Ya", "Strange Magic", "Sweet Talkin' Woman", "Telephone Line", "Mr. Blue Sky", "Hold on Tight", "Don't Bring Me Down", "I Won't Back Down", "Free Fallin'", "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line". Music and culture: Although many authors at the Ben Wheeler Book Fair joyfully cross genres in their work, here’s an attempt to look at SOME of what visitors can expect on Nov. 30. Richard Dobson is returning to Texas from Switzerland with two memoirs. John Prine called Dobson one of the best American songwriters, and Nanci Griffith called him “the Hemingway of country music.” The Tyler native spent time in the 1970s in the fertile Houston music scene with Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, and others. Clark, Griffith, David Allan Coe, Lacy J. Dalton, Carlene Carter and Dave Edmunds, Billie Jo Spears and Del Reeves, and the Carter Family are among those who covered his songs. Dobson will do an acoustic show at The Forge after the book fair. Jay Brakefield from Bryan will bring the expanded, updated version of Deep Ellum: The Other Side of Dallas, written with Alan Govenar about the cultural nexus that played a vital role in the careers of such seminal blues and jazz musicians ...

On this day in Rock news: 1940: Manfred Mann was born. 1953: Charlotte Caffey (guitarist for the Go-Go's) was born. 1956: Elvis Presley visits his favorite local movie theater, the Memphian, and is beset by an adoring crowd who, in the ensuing melee, scratch his new Cadillac. Thus begins Elvis' new habit of renting the entire theater whenever he wants to watch a movie. 1957: Steve Lukather (guitarist for Toto) was born. 1968: Johnny Cash wins best album at the Country Music Awards for his live release Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison. 1976: Keith Moon plays what is to be his final show with The Who, a concert at the Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 1985: The Cinemax cable TV special Carl Perkins and Friends, taped to honor the 30th anniversary of his hit Blue Suede Shoes, is taped with special guests George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Dave Edmunds, and Ringo Starr. 1992: Madonna's book Sex is released. Tiffany Murray, Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of Glamorgan, will give a workshop for 16-19 year olds on Friday 28th. Tiffany will also speak to Kells' own Ken Murray on Sunday 30th, about growing up with rock stars at Rockfield.and what an interesting childhood that must have been! "Rockfield was the world's first residential recording facility, established in the early 1960s as a remote haven for jaded rock stars. Dave Edmunds gave the studio its first hit with "I Hear You Knocking", and a pile of stones in the paddock is supposed to have inspired Oasis's "Wonderwall". Famously, Freddie Mercury figured out the harmonies for "Bohemian Rhapsody" in an old feed store surrounded by horse tackle and cobwebs".

Cover version of the day. Three Dog Night part 3. Here is a song that I used exactly two months ago. In that post I used Bettye LaVette's version. However, this qualifies as part of this Three Dog Night study. They did not have a hit with it but they thought enough of it to name their album after it. This is from the April post in case you missed it: You are no doubt familiar with this song, probably David Bowie's version on Ziggy Stardust. However, several versions predate his including Dave Edmunds, and Mitch Ryder. If you just glance at the songwriting credits you might think it was written by Ray Davies but it was actually Ron Davies, an American songwriter who was eventually based in Nashville. I found 13 versions including the most recent one, just this month by Shelby Lynne. What is remarkable about this song is that three of these artists chose to also use the song title for the name of the album as well. Three Dog Night, Long John Baldry, and Chris Smither. I cannot think of another case of that ...

Mr. H PALE RIDER Barium Villa Records BV003 *** Rugged roots mixture from mid-Welsh singer and guitarist This third studio release is an energetic mix of roots-fused sounds, coupled with bright lyrics and whisky-and-cigars vocals, creating a track list of 10 imaginatively crafted colourful bursts. Teaming up with successful Welsh producer, John David (Love Sculpture; Dave Edmunds; Status Quo), Mr. H has created a curiously diverse album with fusions of his musical tastes of jazz, blues, roots and folk, and this can be heard throughout the album’s duration. Jolly toe-tapper, Dead Cat Fool combines progressive soul-esque trumpet bursts with a jazz-influenced structure, whilst the bassy Same Damned Road has musical hints of craggy blues and jazz. Likewise the upbeat Where Have You Gone with comedic chordal progressions of trumpet and a thick musical backdrop gives the album diversity and musical peculiarity; one of the album’s quirky charms. Another aspect on the album which is perhaps hard not to acknow ...

Fun fact: opening track "Maybe" by Jill Read is actually a guy, Dave Edmunds, with his vocals sped up.

Here's a poll that not one Republican legislator wants to be leading. In a recent survey by Scott Rasmussen, 63% of GOP voters thought Republicans in Congress were "out of touch" with the party's base. That's a terrible number considering it's the base that gets Republicans reelected.
I come to bury Dave Edmunds, not to praise him.

Queen of Hearts" is the title of a country-pop song written by Hank DeVito, the pedal steel guitarist in Emmylou Harris' backing group The Hot Band, and introduced by Dave Edmunds on his 1979 album Repeat When Necessary: released as a single it reached in the UK that year. Following an appearance of the 1980 Rodney Crowell album But What Will the Neighbors Think - on which the song's composer Hank DeVito played guitar - , "Queen of Hearts" had its highest profile incarnation via its inclusion on the 1981 album Juice by Juice Newton who'd recall: "I did ["Queen of Hearts"] live for about a year...Then I brought it to [producer] Richard Landis when we started the Juice album. He wasn’t convinced at that point that it was a breakout song but I told him I think this is a real cool we cut it." Newton's own favorite cut on the Juice album,"Queen of Hearts" was issued as the album's second single and would afford Newton her career record reaching on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in September 19 ...

Back in the mid-80's, Dave Edmunds performed with Rock N' Roll legend/Rockabilly founder Carl Perkins during one of his shows. Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Ringo Starr also performed with Carl Perkins that night as well. Dave Edmunds only played acoustic guitar during that show, but he was pretty good. Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Carl Perkins played some stunning electric and rhythm guitar leads that night, too! I watched that performance and it was just awesome!! The Beatles did a few Carl Perkins covers on some of their early albums, too.
Like I said before, it's a *** shame Dave Edmunds never got his due. He was active mostly during the 70's and 80's. Not only was he an amazing guitar player, it's as if he reformed a lot of the 50's and early 60's Rock N' Roll and brought it to new generations. Dave Edmunds used a lot of 50's and early 60's Rock N' Roll recording techniques to form his own style, along with some contemporary sounds of the times blended in. And the results were stunning!

Repeat When Necessary is an album by Welsh rock musician Dave Edmunds. Produced by Edmunds, it was released in 1979 by Swan Song Records (see 1979 in music).
If you have a Rhapsody account, you may enjoy listening to this album by a super-group consisting of Carl Perkins, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Dave Edmunds.
Anyone ever heard of the musician Dave Edmunds? He's not very well known and it's probably very rare of anyone at my fairly young age to know about him. He was moderately successful back in the 70's, with the band Rockpile. He formed his own method of re-creating the sounds of late 50's/early 60's old time rock n' roll and blended all that into his own style, as if he was giving the late 50's/early 60's a rebirth for another generation. Dave Edmunds was also an awesome guitar player, too. Too bad he's been extremely underrated. On a couple of his albums, he even played all the instruments himself, as well as using some 50's-model guitars. He did that on his last album, which came out back in '94. Dave Edmunds is his own genius! It's amazing how an artist can come up with his own style of creating music as if he were trying to bring back the Malt Shop memories from the golden era of rock n' roll! Even Jeff Lynne of ELO helped produce some of his music.
I wonder what Dave Edmunds is doing now? And is Graham Parker still with the Rumor or still suffering from Mercury Poisoning?
granted I've never heard of Dave Edmunds
I've got Dave Edmunds I Hear You Knocking on my ipod - how exactly did that happen? The shame :(
