Public school teachers saddened by no wage hike news The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) - Davao Region slammed the announcement of Education secretary Bro. Armin Luistro of no salary increases for 2014. "We are saddened that our Deped Secretary, Br. Armin Luistro is the bearer of bad news for us teachers," Elenito Escalante, ACT Davao Region Union president and a high school science teacher, said in a statement sent to Sun.Star Davao. "On the other hand, we welcome his pronouncements that he supports our call for the increases in teachers' salaries. As the head of our agency, and as a cabinet secretary to (President Benigno S.) Cold (and rainy) Valentine’s Day for PHL February 14, 2014 1:42pm It's a cold and rainy Valentine's Day for the archipelago, so the already embittered may want to stay inside. PAGASA said that Amihan (Northeast Monsoon) is causing the cold temperatures in a large part of Luzon and the Visayas, while the trough of a low pressure area has showered Mindanao with rain. Data from The Weather Company showed that light rain is expected in a large part of Mindanao, except for the Davao region, where moderate rain will be experienced on Saturday. Cloudy skies and occassional rain will be experienced in the Visayas and Luzon this weekend. In Metro Manila, chances of rain are low on Saturday, but cold temperatures will continually be felt. — Kim Luces/VC, GMA News
DAVRAA Davao City bags gold in boys’ football THE Davao City boy’s secondary football team made a clean sweep in bagging the gold medal in the just-concluded Davao Region Athletic Association (DAVRAA) Meet held at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex. The DC Durians mentored by former national coach Albert Ryan Lim blanked Compostela Valley Province, 5-0 in the finals. The Durians powered by 14 players from the Ateneo de Davao University and only one from the Navarro National High School of Lasang will now advanced into the Palarong Pambansa in April in Sta. Cruz, Laguna. The Durians started their campaign with a 4-1 win over Tagum City then crushed Davao Oriental (5-1), Davao de Sur (5-0) and Digos City (10-0) in the eliminations. The Durians then blanked Davao del Norte, 4-0 in the semifinals. The Durians are composed of strikers Javi Romero Salas, Jonathan Ryan Lim and Glen Paolo Lumabao, midfielders Darius Joseph Diamante and Rafael Avanceña, attacking wingers George Pineda, John Rhey . ...
Davao crime-free, safest in Philippines, thanks to Duterte? Not true. Police say city's crime rate highest in region.
Davao Regional meet, like the Central Visayas meet, also yielded terribly surprising result: after 8 years of dominance, finally Pablo Lorenzo High School of Davao City finished second to team Tagum City. Gold mining in the nearby Compostela Valley province helped the city of Tagum reach her city-hood status so it is called the city of Gold. For the first time, the team will represent the vast Davao region to this year's Palarong Pambansa (national games) in Sta. Cruz, Province of Laguna! Of course, it hurt the Mandug boys who tried their best despite being unprepared, not-so-well trained, and without their strongest spiker Ryan Jake Olais who surprised his fans by not playing in the tournament. Anyway, I hope our group mates from team Tagum City will tell us about themselves, since this is the first time for them to play against the country's 16 best of the best regions! Congratulations Team Tagum.

ILIGAN CITY – A bridge connecting Kauswagan and Linamon in Lanao del Norte collapsed Tuesday night due to the swelling of Napo river, stranding hundreds of commuters. Commuters coming from Iligan, Ozamis City and other neighboring towns were stranded and vehicles filled up the national highway on both ends of the Napo bridge, which collapsed at around 9:10 p.m., Tuesday. Police Supt. Madid Paitao, Provincial Police Office (PPO) director in Lanao del Norte, said half of the Napo bridge collapsed. Linamon is the eastern gateway to Lanao del Norte since it is the first municipality of southwestern province of Northern Mindanao. Supt. Paitao said the only mode of transportation being used by commuters are motor-outriggers. “Long lines of vehicles are growing on both sides,” Supt. Paitao said. He said checkpoints have been put up prior to entering Kauswagan and Linamon to advise commuters. Meanwhile, six of the nine bridges that submerged in floodwaters caused by the low-pressure area (LPA) remain impass ...

Much to be undone by Arnold P. Alamon The windows and doors of this small house are all boarded up. I am usually partial to airy open spaces but two weeks of this wet and now windy weather make me wish that I am in an Ivatan stone house instead of this hut made for tropical weather. But then I am pretty sure I would say the opposite thing in a few months. The searing heat of  the windless summer will make me want to tear down the walls of this house and pine for the stormy weather of the past week.  Welcome to the weather of extremes brought about by climate change. I would gladly endure the tolerable inconvenience of the dampness and the mud, and alternately the heat if these were all there is to it. But we know painfully well that the past few years have proven the deadly effects of these unnatural natural events. We were on the edge this week as the Cagayan de Oro river threatened once again to swell with the incessant rains brought in by the first storm after the deluge that was Yolanda. And we rema ...

Tagum’s grand fireworks display has become an annual tradition in the city, drawing audience not only from Tagum City but also from other parts of Davao Region. Mayor Rellon shared this year’s fireworks display will be moved from the national highway to a new site in JV Ayala Avenue, where the new city hall stands, to accommodate more people who wish to witness this year’s illumination of the sky. The local government earmarked a budget of 400 thousand pesos for the event, which the mayor said will be an appropriate kick-off for better year 2014 for the city. He added that they chose the new city hall as this year’s venue as a way of letting the public know that the local government will commence the construction to finish the iconic government building of the city. “It’s also a way of driving away bad spirits in the area,” he said.

Davao City, Dec 13 (PIA) The military’s Peace and Development Outreach Program has covered 70 percent of the total number of barangays throughout the region in its effort to reduce the impact of insurgency in the countryside.   Major General Ariel Bernardo, commander of the 10th Infantry Division said the PDOP has cleared 1,191 barangays throughout Davao Region with 181 more being attended to while 484 barangays remaining to get in touch with.   He said the objective is to ensure unhampered delivery of government services to the people given the normal peace and order condition even in far-flung barangays.   “Hopefully, we no longer consider peace and security situation as the one that impedes the development that we intend to realize in Davao Region,” Bernardo said.   Governor Corazon Malanyaon of Davao Oriental affirmed the impact of the PDOP in her province.   She recalled that since the PDOP was launched from 2010 to 2012 in Davao Oriental, the province was declared and affirmed as insurge ...

The Davao Region Multi-Media Group (DReMMG) condemned to the harshest and strongest term possible the killing of Broadcaster Rogelio Tata Butalid of Tagum City. Butalid has a blocktime radio program in Radyo Natin located at Leonardia Bldg., along Sobrecarey Cor. Roxas streets in Tagum City. He was shoot dead 5 times in different parts of his body just as he descended from his radio program at 10 in the morning December 11, 2013. He was 44. Just like the killing of Radioman Joash Digos in Valencia City Bukidnon, and Milo of Surigao Del Sur, Butalid might have gained the ire of those he attacked on the air, but this in any way is not worth a life of a human being, much more a member of the working media. Again we see this as another attack to the freedom of the press and a blatant affront to the democratic system where the members of the media are mere instruments and messengers of the news to the public. We are shaken of the impunity of the killers who remained unknown. In view of this, we the ...

Tomato Tomato production was placed at 68.1 thousand mt in the second quarter of 2013, 2.15 percent higherthan the 66.6 thousand mt output in 2012. The increase was accounted by the following: seeds distribution from Department of Agriculture (DA) and Local Government Units (LGU’s) in Ilocos Region, MIMAROPA and Central Visayas; increase in area harvested in Central Luzon, Western Visayas, Davao Region and Caraga; effective pest control in Central Luzon and in Zamboanga City; and, crop shifting from radish, eggplant and habichuelas in Laguna, patolain Iloilo and cabbage in Davao City. Davao City, Sept 26 (PIA) The military considers the deployment of militia detachments on areas which ongoing have road repair and construction to ensure the protection of equipment from burning by the communist rebels especially in the countryside.   Lt. General Ricardo Rainier Cruz, commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command revealed the plan during the forum on “High Summit on Security Sector Transformation and Prospects for Post-Conflict Philippines,” at the Ateneo de Davao University held yesterday (Sept. 25).   He said the destruction perpetrated allegedly by the communist rebels on the construction industry with the burning of equipment is very alarming.   “One of the immediate proposed solutions is the putting of militia patrol bases on the construction sites,” Cruz said. He was one of those who fought hard in the "Battle of Ising" during the Japanese occupation here in Davao region. Now, it can be told that it was the only battle in Mindanao wherein the Filipinos prevailed. To my Lolo Patricio, we miss u and we salute ur bravery and patriotism!

Typhoon of 1912 In 1912, Monkayo, an interior region, was hit by a typhoon. Based on the letters written by the missionaries, the vortex of the freak storm, presumably a super howler, entered Mindanao via the northern sector of Baganga and south of Cateel on November 27 before crossing the Agusan River between Jativa (now part of Barangay Haguimitan, Monkayo) and Compostela. The basis for this observation was the people on board steamer Fernandez Hermanos in Bislig, and those in the stations of Davao and Cagayan. Fr. Bernardino Llobera, a missionary at Caraga, gave a more detailed about of the effects of the storm. About midday of November 27, it began to rain gently with winds from the NNE. The barometer had then fallen to 751 millimeters. The rain continued to fall, and at about 10 ...

LINGAYEN CITY, Pangasinan– A son of a teacher from Agusan del Sur captured the first gold medal yesterday as Sonny Wagdoz won men’s 5,000-meter run even as the Calabarzon swimmers took four gold medals at the start of hostilities in the PRISAA National Collegiate games here yesterday. The 18-year old Wagdoz humbled the field as he clocked 15 minutes and 46.9 seconds to help power Davao Region to a hot start in athletics before a sizeable crowd at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center. “Takbo takbo lang po, at diskarte… mahaba rin yon takbuhin, diniskartihan na lang po,” said Wagdoz, a second year criminology student at University of Mindanao who took the gold at the expense of teammate Antnony Nerza (15:48.9). Host Region 1 (Ilocos Region) made its presence felt through 21-year-old Debby Habon, an education student of Virgen Milagrosa University who clinched the women’s long jump title with a 5.23-meter effort, beating out CAR’s Marla Felice Ellaga (5.23 meters) and Calabarzon Region’s ...

Philippines: Banana growers donate fruit to flood victims Bananas are usually distributed by the Philipino Banana Growers & Exporters Association, Inc. (PBGEA) during calamities as part of its corporate social responsibility program. However, with banana companies and their growers themselves the victims of Typhoon Pablo in December last year and in the recent flooding in Davao Region, it seemed as if there would not be enough bananas to share this time. Despite this, the PBGEA was able to donate bananas to the City Social Services and Development Office in Davao City, for victims of the recent flooding.
Philippines: Rain adds to banana growers' problems It will take at least a year for the banana industry in the Davao Region to recover from Typhoon Pablo’s devastation, an industry leader said on Wednesday. Stephen A. Antig, executive director of the Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA), also said the continuous downpour experienced by the region since last week has already destroyed an additional 400 hectares of plantations in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte. “Banana (plants) cannot survive in water for 24 hours,” said Mr. Antig, pointing out that although some growers have already started rehabilitating their plantations, the process has been slow because of the cost. He said a grower needs at least P430,000 ($8000 US) to rehabilitate a hectare of banana farm. State-run Development Bank of the Philippines and Land Bank of the Philippines already expressed their commitment to help finance the rehabilitation of the banana industry. Aside from the banks, Mr. Antig said companies that ...

New Year’s Call @ Regional Office Main Building, January 18, 2013     A profound sense of wistfulness enfolds me as I move to the rostrum this morning knowing this is going to be the second and last New Year’s Call for me to address the strong men and women of DILG Region XI local governance team. Be that as it may, even as the nine month countdown to mandatory retirement has already started eight days ago, this is not yet the time for me to say farewell but rather to greet you a. . . Repost from Julia Jasmine Sta Romana: There have been people who have been posting on FB that Davao deserves to be flooded because "mayabang ang mga taga-Davao" or "masyadong maa-ngas" or "masyadong kasi nagmamagaling ang mga taga Davao". I would like to ask my fellow Davaenoes to ignore these posts. As difficult as it is to turn the other cheek and not defend ourselves, these people don't deserve our time and attention. Let's focus our attention and our resources in helping our neighbors. Instead of sharing these people's posts, let's share relevant information like news or updates on how we can help. These small minded people don't deserve our attention. We're all better than that and we all have more important business to attend to.

Press Release January 19, 2013 DA crafts disaster preparedness, response, rehab program The Department of Agriculture is crafting a disaster preparedness, response and rehabilitation program to cushion off the adverse and destructive impacts of natural disasters, particularly typhoons and floods, on the country’s agriculture and fishery sector. Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala said the entire DA family should be prepared to surmount the challenges posed by typhoons and floods, and protect the gains and livelihood of the country’s farmers and fisherfolk, including public investments like irrigation systems, postharvest facilities, and farm-to-market roads. “Let’s harmonize our efforts and resources, as we craft a comprehensive disaster preparedness program to better protect farming and fishing areas against typhoons and floods,” said the DA chief in his keynote message, January 17, 2013, at the opening of a three-day orientation and workshop on disaster preparedness, response and rehabilit ...
2 rivers now share one mouth JADE Valley Subdivision in Tigatto, Buhangin, was once the Davao River, and Talomo and Pangi Rivers constantly choke up and belches back floodwaters because these two rivers now only have one river mouth. As Jade Valley is once again submerged by the waters of Davao River, we review two articles published in August 2011, two months after the flooding of Pangi River that killed 31 residents. ("Subdivision was once Davao River" published Wednesday, August 17, 2011, and "Choked rivers also caused Davao killer flood" published Friday, August 19, 2011). These articles are based on a geologist's point of view on why Jade Valley will always be flooded up to the rooftops whenever Davao River overflows, and why Pangi and Talomo Rivers often choke up and flood Bangkal and Talomo areas. The articles came out from the presentations made by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau office in Davao Region during the "Flooding the Watersheds Forum" organized by the Interface Development Interventions ...

City information officer Joseph Lawrence Garcia said the mayor's suspension order covers kindergarten to high school level. Garcia said the Department of Education (Deped) in Davao Region was already informed of the order. Several areas in Davao City went under water Sunday as a result of the heavy rain that lasted for hours and forced the evacuation of 5,165 families in 12 barangays. Areas affected were Matina Gravahan, Jade Valley, NCCC Subdivision, Deca Tigatto, GEM and Don Julian Maa, San Rafael and areas near the Davao River. Duterte-Carpio is also calling for a special session Monday of the City Council as she recommended that affected barangays be declared under a state of calamity. Davao City- Top officials from international donor communities commended the Early Recovery and Rehabilitation for Central Mindanao (ERRCM) Programme for its successful facilitation of at least 65,000 internally-displaced people (IDP) in Central Mindanao, and hailed the program as a model for future relief and rehabilitation initiatives in the country.    Toshihiro Tanaka, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Country Director for the Philippines describes the program as “exemplary,” citing the full commitment of its project implementors.    “The converged efforts of the program’s stakeholders resulted in the success of the ERRCM Programme, which facilitated the transition of the IDPs from early recovery to full rehabilitation,” says Tanaka at a meeting held here Monday.   The European Union (EU) also lauds the effective methodology of the program, which utilized the convergence approach in achieving its key results.   The convergence approach employs inter-agency complementation effo ...
