Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August. Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run. "I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three." Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp. "He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman. "He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch." Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent. "Now we don't have Daley Blind, w ...
close to Charlton's record Wayne Rooney moved to within three goals of Sir Bobby Charlton’s England scoring record on Tuesday night when he netted twice in his national team’s 3-1 away win over Scotland. The Manchester United striker beat the Scots’ substitute goalkeeper Craig Gordon with a bullet header just two minutes after the break, when a wayward shot from Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere ricocheted around the home side’s penalty area. Rooney later side-footed in England's killer third strike, just two minutes after Scotland had pulled a goal back. The Three Lions had entered the interval at an electric Celtic Park in Glasgow with a slender but deserved 1-0 lead after Wilshere set up club colleague Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for a header just past the half-hour mark. Rooney was one of three United players who started the game – with Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw forming half of England’s defence – and by the time he made it 2-0, there were four Reds on the pitch with Darren Fletcher replac ...

Manchester United vs Chelsea: Potential starting line-up - No Di Maria and Herrera. Manchester United vs Chelsea is definetly the biggest test yet this season but there are fresh injury concerns and questions about who should step in for the injuries. Angel di Maria and Ander Herrera are the two biggest concerns and it begs the question – how would United line-up if neither is fit and available for selection? Marouane Fellaini is a shoe-in to start against Chelsea after his performance against West Brom on Monday night but with Antonio Valencia also out injured and Van Gaal reluctant to use Darren Fletcher or Anderson, choosing a midfield partner is more difficult. A lack of options could see Louis Van Gaal play Juan Mata in a deeper role which would also allow Adnan Januzaj to play in a more central No.10 position, somewhere fans feel he can thrive rather than out on the wing. As for up front, with Wayne Rooney suspended the duo of Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao are unlikely to change. What do you ...

Marouane Fellaini grabbed a last-minute winner as Manchester United warmed up for the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Valencia. The Belgian, who has had a tough time at Old Trafford since he was signed by David Moyes nearly a year ago, pounced on a defensive mistake in injury time to ensure the Reds finished their pre-season programme unbeaten. Darren Fletcher had put United ahead early in the second half, after Wayne Rooney had missed a penalty before the break. Rodrigo equalised in Valencia’s best spell, but just as the friendly looked to be drifting to a draw, substitute Fellaini pounced for the deciding goal. Louis Van Gaal's first game in charge at Old Trafford saw the Dutchman unveil the 3-5-2 system that served him well so far in pre-season, but although United looked comfortable the game only came to life as a contest when Rooney struck his spot kick against the base of the post having been clipped going for an Ashley Young cross. Fletcher put United ahead with a deflected shot from the ' ...

Substitute Marouane Fellaini scored in second-half stoppage time as Manchester United beat Valencia 2-1 in manager Louis Van Gaal's first home game in charge of the English Premier League club. Wayne Rooney had a first-half penalty saved in the 32nd minute having earlier been felled by defender Antonio Barragan. United broke the deadlock early in the second half when Darren Fletcher slotted home from the edge of the area after Ashley Young's 49th minute corner. The visitors pressed for an equalizer and were rewarded in the 71st when Rodrigo blazed a first-time volley into the roof of the net following a free-kick. Substitute Pablo Piatti poked a shot wide from close range moments later and the La Liga side were left to rue that miss when Fellaini struck late on.

Paul Scholes insists he is ready to tell it how it is in his new role as a TV pundit. But it seems Class of '92 team-mate Gary Neville is already looking to cool him down, after throwing an ice bucket over him. Scholes, who upset Wayne Rooney earlier this summer with his scathing views, joined Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and a host of other Old Trafford favourites for a charity game against non-league Salford City on Thursday night. Neville threw the ice bucket over Scholes as part of a charity cause for the James McCarthy Foundation - not the Everton midfielder, but a young man who suffered a brain tumour in a car accident and wants to complete his 'bucket list' - and the former United midfielder apparently requested that Darren Fletcher be next in line to be soaked. The former England midfielder will embark on his latest career turn next week as a pundit for BT Sport in their Premier League curtain-raiser between United and Swansea. Forgotten Manchester United stars can revive their careers under Van Gaal Ashley Young, Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher all impressed as the Old Trafford club beat Real Madrid on Saturday, with the Dutchman offering his squad a clean slate Aug 3, 2014 12:00:00 COMMENT By Alex Moretto in Ann Arbor Prior to Manchester United's 3-1 victory over Real Madrid on Saturday, Louis Van Gaal suggested the need for further summer signings may not be as great as has been anticipated. "We still have a month to go [before the close of the transfer window] and we are winning," he said. "Maybe we don't need other players. "First I want to see the players who I have and give them an honest chance." Several of those players appear to have grabbed that chance with both hands. The likes of Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher and Shinji Kagawa look rejuvenated in the new 3-4-3 system employed by Van Gaal, and impressed in the pre-season win over Madrid in Michigan. The Dutchman's arrival seems to have injected confidence in Young, ...

Manchester United beat Inter 5-3 on penalties after their International Champions Cup clash finished goalless. The Red Devils scored each of their penalties, with captain Darren Fletcher converting the decisive kick after Marco Andreolli rattled his effort off the crossbar. Manager Louis Van Gaal made four changes to the starting XI that played Roma on Saturday, with Anders Lindegaard, Chris Smalling, Fletcher and Ashley Young returning to the line-up. United came close to breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute with defender Phil Jones, he stooped low to direct his header towards the bottom corner of the net but Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic got his hand to the ball and denied Jonny Evans on the rebound in a goal-mouth scramble. There were few clear-cut chances throughout the first half, though Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Danny Welbeck cut the Italians apart with a thrilling passing move, only for Mata’s low cross to be cut out before it reached Rooney. Wilfried Zaha was the only player in United ...
Manchester United's successful Tour 2014, presented by Aon, continued with a penalty shoot-out victory after Louis Van Gaal's men were held to a goalless draw by Inter Milan. Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher all converted from the spot to complete a full set of kicks for the Reds – playing in the new blue third kit for the first time – while Marco Andreolli's miss for Inter proved pivotal at the FedEx Field, home of NFL legends Washington Redskins. Van Gaal started with his three senior centre-backs all on the pitch, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones switching to the middle and right respectively, while Jonny Evans retained the left-sided role in which he began the tour against LA Galaxy. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia took up the wing-back positions, with Ander Herrera and again-captain Darren Fletcher allowing Juan Mata to support Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck. The man who Evans, Jones and Smalling are all striving to replace, Inter's new no.15 Ne ...

Darren Fletcher and Wayne Rooney now the longest servant for the club
Mamelodi Sundowns, just like Manchester United, I hate it when they do well. . . But I don't like seeing them suffer. It's a good thing both teams have found their feet again (seemingly). For the sake of the greatest striker on the planet right now Waynand van Rooitjie a.k.a Wayne Rooney and the under rated Darren Fletcher. For the sake of the mid and late 90s Disprin Mamelodi Sundowns. All the best for both teams.
On a day that you are making a little tactical sense all of a sudden you started making nonsense decisions. Why would you change your best players in a match you needed to score before you qualify.First, you substituted Darren Fletcher who by any account performed better than Michael Carrick (tactically unacceptable).Second, you brought Adnan in and substituted Danny Welbeck who was arguably United's best player of the match. He outplayed the Bayern central defence and performed relatively better than Wayne Rooney (Tactical diarrhea). When you know for a fact Rooney was playing with a toe injury, having played for 70mins just substitute him and bring in Chicharito instead of Welbeck. All is gone now although we lost but we bowed out in dignity contrary to the belief that Manchester United is dead. Manchester United will never die and David Moyes will come out clean and lead Manchester United to the promise land.

David Moyes suggested Wayne Rooney would be fit to play and true to the Manchester United manager's word, the striker is in the starting XI. Rio Ferdinand drops to the bench, with Chris Smalling taking his place in the side. Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher and Shinji Kagawa come in for Alex Buttner, Marouane Fellaini and Ryan Giggs respectively. Meanwhile, defender Dante, midfielder Mario Gotze and forward Mario Mandzukic come into the Bayern Munich side. There is no place for right-back Rafinha, with Philipp Lahm taking up his position.
Bayern Munich vs Manchester United: Team News and Injury Updates Manchester United travel to Germany on Wednesday night with the knowledge they need to score at least once to advance to the next stage of the Champions League. United showed they were no pushovers in the 1-1 draw between themselves and Bayern Munich last week, but they will need an even bigger performance to topple the European Champions on their own patch. They will, however, be boosted by the news that Wayne Rooney trained on Tuesday after bruising his toe, with the forward expected to start the game. Marouane Fellaini and Rafael missed the session and both remain doubts for the match, with Robin Van Persie definitely out after picking up an injury against Olympiakos in the last round. In Fellaini's absence, manager David Moyes could opt for Phil Jones in midfield to offer the necessary energy to close Bayern's creative players down, though Darren Fletcher could be in contention to partner Michael Carrick instead. Juan Mata is ineligible ...

More life story revealed by Darren Fletcher... "Sir Alex was honestly more than a manager. He was a different level. I was conscious of contracts. I went to him and said, ‘I’m ill and not playing . . .’ He looked at me like I was mental. He said forget about football. Just get well for your kids and your family. I was listening and he was saying it ... but there’s a football pitch behind him, through his window. And I can see all his trophies and his pictures. I’m thinking, ‘Forget about football?!’” Fletcher revealed. Sir Alex Ferguson and Fletcher agreed, for a while, to hide the condition from teammates. “To avoid, ‘Why’s he playing? He’s ill’. We’d see if the medication worked.” He is blown away by the generosity of colleagues. Michael Carrick’s brother-in-law, a singer, is providing entertainment on Thursday. Reds' national service Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher could make his return to the Scotland national side next week after the Reds midfielder earned his first call-up since 2012. Fletcher is in line to play a part in his nation’s match against Poland in Warsaw on Wednesday as he joins as a host of United players involved in international friendlies. With World Cup qualifiers boxed off in November, Scotland’s neighbours England will take on Denmark at Wembley as manager Roy Hodgson aims to give his men valuable playing time ahead of the 2014 showpiece tournament in Brazil. Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley have all been selected to represent the Three Lions, but Phil Jones misses out through injury. Robin Van Persie and Patrice Evra could come up against one another when France take on the Netherlands in what could be an entertaining affair between two former World Cup finalists. Elsewhere, having recovered from wrist and groin injuries, Marouane Fell ...
Last Monday, the official Manchester United website released an article publicising the possible candidates for the role of captain from the season 2014/15. The article consisted of 5 possible candidates: David De Gea, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher. At first reaction, it seemed brutal in seeing Robin Van Persie as a main nominee, but as Leonardo Di Caprio so timely proved on Sunday night at the BAFTAs, something as little as a blown kiss to the camera seals the win for just being that fantastic, even without a prize to showboat at the end of it. Similarly, Robin Van Persie has also proven that a trail leaving the words ‘awe-struck’ visible on foreheads sometimes can be just as phenomenal, even if it means that he may not be the leading man at the end of the tunnel, hand on hips, first to absorb the warmth of the Old Trafford crowd. And then I read: “The opinions expressed in this article are personal to the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of Manchester ...
David Moyes and Manchester United remain bullish for Olympiakos tie • Manager believes United can win Champions League • Wayne Rooney says strikeforce is working hard in training From David Moyes and his Manchester United players the message is clear: no one is giving up on the Champions League. Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic all echo the manager's bullishness that a fourth European Cup is not beyond United despite the side standing sixth in the Premier League, 11 points from qualifying for next season's contest. To tout themselves as able to win a tournament that includes the holders, Bayern Munich, who are more formidable this year, and the gilded Barcelona team of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Neymar, sounds fantastical. Yet this is a cup competition and Moyes spoke at the weekend of "doing a Liverpool", who triumphed nine years ago as underdogs, while Chelsea in 2012 also somehow pulled off the trick of lifting the trophy when deeply unfancied. United's quest continues in the last 16 at ...
Manchester United have a collection of stars on the verge of the final year of their contracts. Despite clear interest of late from Chelsea, Wayne Rooney looks likely to sign a new deal at Old Trafford worth around £300,000 a week, but David Moyes' potential cull of playing staff mean others face uncertain futures. Antonio Valencia may be handed a short-term extension, Darren Fletcher's status depends on his continued comeback from illness, while Michael Carrick may well be overlooked for a deal due to a downturn in form - with one prospect being early retirement. Tom Cleverley has until November to prove he is worthy of a prolonged stay. Despite the fact he'll be 31 by next summer, Per Mertesacker is likely to be offered a new deal by Arsenal if his current form holds. Mathieu Flamini is in the same boat. Mikel Arteta could be moved on, while Thomas Vermaelen and Abou Diaby are almost certain not to be retained, with the Belgian set to be sold this summer. Napoli are interested. Over at Liverpool, club ...
Manchester United have released the list of nominees for the next captaincy role, now that it's confirmed current skipper Nemanja Vidic is to quit the club at the end of the season. It's a common that more senior players like Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs are to follow Vidic out of the club come season end. It might seem strange to others that Robin Van Persie is not on that list of nominees. The nominees are Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones, Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans and David De Gea.. In your own view, who deserves the famous Red Devil arm-band at Old Trafford once Vidic le
Who shall be the next captain of Manchester United? With the news of our captain Nemanja Vidic leaving us in the summers and well as Rio Ferdinand, who do you think should be our next captain? The options picked by the official Man Utd site are: David De Gea, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Darren Fletcher & Wayne Rooney. And of course, Wayne Rooney is the favourite as of now. What is your choice?
Manchester United manager David Moyes admits the job of captain is up for grabs when Nemanja Vidic leaves in the summer. The Serbian's exit has already sparked a great deal of discussion regarding his replacement as skipper but the manager has an open mind over the situation. Left-back Patrice Evra remains vice-captain but others will have an opportunity to stake their claim. "Vida will remain as captain until the end of the season," stated Moyes. "When he isn't, it will be Patrice Evra who takes over. When it's not him, it will be Rio Ferdinand or Wayne Rooney or Darren Fletcher. "We need to make sure the person who takes over knows what it means to the club, the responsibilitie s it carries and what is required of you. But I think we have a lot of leaders in the dressing room and they will all stake their claim. "I would say it's up for grabs. We have had two or three different captains due to injuries. I do think what we want is to show leadership qualities, not just on the pitch but off it. I think th ...

Three and easy for Utd Danny Welbeck scored twice as Manchester United eased to a comfortable 3-0 win at Aston Villa. In what was a welcome return to form for United, they claimed their first Premier League win since they beat Arsenal over a month ago. After a bright start from Villa, it was United who went ahead on 15 minutes as Welbeck finished from close range after Adnan Januzaj's header had cannoned back off the post. Just minutes later and Welbeck was on hand to convert his second as he slid home to meet Antonio Valencia's cross. The scoring was completed not long into the second half, and it was another well-worked team goal as Tom Cleverley exchanged passes with Wayne Rooney before firing past Brad Guzan. United were also boosted by the return of Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher, who made his first league appearance in nearly 12 months when he came on in the second half. David Moyes's side had been staring at a hat-trick of defeats for only the third time in the entire Premier League era. Whils ...
Three Things: Manchester United-Arsenal By John Brewin | November 10, 2013 11:38:33 AM PST MANCHESTER, England -- Three thoughts from Manchester United's 1-0 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford. 1. Developing partnership spells danger "Eight points clear, Robin," sang the Arsenal fans, their triumphalism premature. They have been in understandably good cheer of late, but the appearance of a former idol turned their disposition sour. And especially when Robin Van Persie climbed above Olivier Giroud, his Arsenal replacement, to head home a Wayne Rooney corner in the 27th minute. There was to be no obeying of the modern practice of not celebrating against your old club. Van Persie stretched his arms to their full span in a vindication further revealed by a primal roar. Respect cuts both ways. On Friday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had mischievously described his former captain as an Arsenal man. Here was his riposte. Like his teammates, determination was writ large on the Dutchman's features. The modern Manch ...
Rooney (2010)... The former United boss has revealed that Wayne Rooney cited a 'lack of ambition' for his wanting to leave Manchester United in 2010. "At that meeting, he [Rooney] was hugely sheepish. I felt he’d been programmed in what he was trying to say. The basis of his complaint was that we were not sufficiently ambitious," he wrote in his autobiography. "My response was to ask Wayne: ‘When have we not challenged for the league in the last 20 years? How many European finals have we been to in the last three or four years? "I told him to say we weren’t ambitious was a nonsense. Wayne said that we should have pursued Mesut Ozil, who had joined Real Madrid from Werder Bremen. "My reply was that it was none of his business who we should have gone for. I told him it was his job to play and perform. My job was to pick the correct teams. And so far I had been getting it right." On How Ronaldo Was Sold... The Scot writes: "Madrid paid £80 million in cash for him, and do you know why? It was a way for ...
his explosive autobigraphy Sir Alex Ferguson targets Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Rafa Benítez but it is former United captain Roy Keane who comes in for the most criticism The main victim of Sir Alex Ferguson’s new book is Roy Keane, who receives far more than the hairdryer treatment. He gets savaged. Wayne Rooney, David Beckham and Rafa Benítez are also targeted by Ferguson in “My Autobiography” (Hodder & Stoughton, £25) but nothing like the ruthless criticism of Keane, his former captain at Manchester United. Elsewhere, the Glazers get off lightly and there is little significant debate about Rock of Gibraltar. The Keane material is extraordinary. Ferguson starts the chapter devoted to his sentence-by-sentence skewering of Keane with some praise, hailing the midfielder’s many gifts as a powerhouse between the boxes and his ability to motivate team-mates with his ferocious glare and orders. Ferguson, though, detected a change in Keane’s behaviour as his footballing powers ebbed, following ...
Those expecting an explosive account of Sir Alex Ferguson's final 14 years at Manchester United may be a tad disappointed with his autobiography. For while it is indeed laced with barbs at former players and opposition managers, most are also tempered with gushing praise. Wayne Rooney and David Beckham are among those lauded and lamented almost in equal measure. But there is space for some revelations in 'My Autobiography'. Here, I pick out four of the most noteworthy in Sir Alex's memoir. Ronaldo forced to stay an extra year to spite Roman Calderon Background: After a momentous 2007-08 season in which he had established himself as the best player on the planet, Ronaldo was publicly courted by Real Madrid. Los Blancos president Roman Calderon was happy to declare to the media that he was making moves to bring Ronaldo to the Bernabeu, while it became apparent that the player himself had a long-standing ambition to move to the Spanish giants. Ferguson, however, was not amused by the public pursuit, famously ...

But I am looking at how I can fill the wide positions as it's a bit of a problem. Welbeck can play wide and is a definite option for me.”
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Man United have the strength in depth to cope with their current injury setbacks ahead of the Manchester derby. Anderson, Nani and Antonio Valencia will all miss Sunday's Etihad Stadium clash through injury while Shinji Kagawa and skipper Nemanja Vidic remain on the sidelines. However, Ferguson is unconcerned by the absentees and is confident in the quality of the players available to him. "I have plenty of experience to bring in. I rested Darren Fletcher against Cluj on Wednesday and just brought him on for the last 10 minutes. "Michael Carrick will be back in. I also have Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. "That is what big squads allow you to do. You don't have every player every week. Our supporters must recognise that."
Top Manchester Derbys 1) Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City Premier League; 20th September, 2009 Michael Owen’s spell at Old Trafford didn’t quite go as the former England international would have hoped, but he’ll always be remembered for scoring the winner in the 96th minute of this pulsating derby. Both sides traded goals throughout, with Wayne Rooney opening the scoring before Gareth Barry’s equaliser. Darren Fletcher and Craig Bellamy both bagged braces, before Owen’s late intervention gave the hosts all three points. Mark Hughes fumed as United capitalised in ‘Fergie Time’, as Owen was found in space and fired low across Shay Given.
Rooney calls for United to score early Wayne Rooney has said that Manchester United need to establish a routine of scoring early goals, after falling behind for a 12th time in 20 games on Saturday before defeating QPR. “I don't know why it is but it's happening too many times," Rooney said. "We need to just go out now and try to get the early goal. As soon as we get a goal, the team settles down and the game settles. We tend to take control of the game. But more often than not we've conceded first and made it hard for ourselves to try to get back in the game then go on and win it.” Darren Fletcher also said United were “very frustrated” by the trend: “It shouldn't take going a goal behind for us to start playing. The only positive thing we can take from it is that every time we do it we seem to respond. But we can't keep making a habit of it.” Fletcher said United's play could have been quicker with players taking “a few more risks with our passes” in the first half. “There's a risk that ...

At 28, the Scotland captain is far and away the Reds' most experienced player in the 21-man squad Sir Alex Ferguson selected for Tuesday’s Champions League Group H tie against Galatasaray. And Fletcher, who made his Reds debut in a Champions League match aged just 19, says he’ll gladly play father figure to the younger lads. “I’m 28 and one of the most senior players in the squad,” he told MUTV. “But it’s a role I’m used to with Sco ...

Manchester United Team News Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be in a state of ambivalence regarding squad selection. Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher have both made successful returns to first-team action, completing 77 and 90 minutes respectively in the 2-1 home win over Newcastle United in the League Cup on Wednesday. Rooney had been out for a month with a deep cut to his thigh following a nasty but accidental challenge from Hugo Rodallega in the win over Fulham, while Fletcher had not started for United in 10 months before the Newcastle game due to ulcerative colitis, a chronic bowel condition. Both should be available for the Spurs game, and considering their impact against Newcastle on Wednesday, the duo could be important players for the Red Devils on Saturday. However, it's not all good news for Manchester United, with both Nemanja Vidic and Antonio Valencia ruled out for the foreseeable future (h/t Daily Mail). Vidic has been ruled out for two months having been plagued by complica ...
Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher both spoke of their delight after making long-awaited returns to the Manchester United starting line-up in their Capital One Cup third round victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford.
Sir Alex Ferguson was satisfied and encouraged by his side's performance in the Capital One Cup triumph against Newcastle. United progressed to a blockbuster tie in the fourth round at Chelsea despite fielding a very inexperienced defence and handing out a total of four senior debuts on the night at Old Trafford. "I'm very pleased," he admitted. "First of all, given the tie was an all-Premier League one and Newcastle are probably a stronger team than us physically, we played some fantastic football. We kept on playing our football and perservered with that and had good composure in our game. "I was really pleased with that and I think we deserved to win. Newcastle are a very powerful team so it's good to get through that one. "Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher were excellent - Wayne understandably tired a little towards the end but that was to be expected. I'm really pleased for the both of them. They have all done really well. Some of them tired but that was understandable as it was a first game for some ...
