Manchester United Manager Louis Van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August. Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run. "I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three." Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp. "He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman. "He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch." Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent. "Now we don't have Daley Blind, w ...
Manchester United welcome unbeaten Chelsea to Old Trafford and Louis Van Gaal’s side need a win in order to close the gap at the top of the table. Both clubs will be looking to capitalise on Manchester City’s loss at West Ham United yesterday, however – Chelsea are sitting comfortably at the top of the table with 22 points, whilst United are in eight position with ten points less. Jose Mourinho has only lost once at Old Trafford, which came in the 2005/06 season following those disastrous matches against Middlesborough (the 4-1 defeat that promoted Roy Keane’s reaction in the now infamous MUTV interview) and in the Champions League against Lille (United were eliminated at the group stage). Darren Fletcher scored the winner that day and Louis Van Gaal will hoping for more of the same come 4pm this afternoon. United of course have looked very leaky in defence and the backline was all over the place for WBA’s second goal last Monday. There are doubts that joint Premier League top goalscorer Diego C ...
Manager Louis Van Gaal said Manchester United have only one senior centre-back available for Saturday's Premier League game against West Ham. Marcos Rojo is fit, but Chris Smalling (leg), Phil Jones (hamstring) and Jonny Evans (ankle) are injured and Tyler Blackett is suspended. Van Gaal said: "All three of my right- sided centre-halves are out, so I'll have to go to the youth system." Potential candidates to play include Tom Thorpe, 21, and Paddy McNair, 19. Neither under-21 captain Thorpe nor McNair, who joined United as a midfielder three years ago, have played for the first team. Smalling limped out of training on Wednesday and, with Luke Shaw expected to make his debut at left- back following his £28m summer arrival from Southampton, Rojo is likely to move to centre-half against the Hammers. "I won't take risks with players - they have to be fit," said Van Gaal, who is without nine players in total through injury. Midfielders Daley Blind or Darren Fletcher could be employed as centre-backs by United ...

The England international, 28, replaces Nemanja Vidic, who has left the club for Inter Milan, while Darren Fletcher has been named as vice-captain. "I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me." It was always suggested that succeeding Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager would be the hardest job in football and it proved to be the case for David Moyes at Old Trafford last season. But with the Scot being sacked after guiding United to seventh place, their lowest-ever Premier League finish, Louis Van Gaal has arguably landed the manager's job at the perfect time, with Moyes's failure making it almost impossible for the Dutchman to do any worse. Van Gaal has inherited a rebuilding job at United, but the early signs from the club's pre-season tour of the United States point to a much-improved atmosphere and sense of belief and the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach appears already to have made the team competitive again. The intensity of the Premier League will quickly test United's progress under Van Gaal and tell the manager whether his new 3-4-1-2 formation will work in England. But players who appeared to have no future at United, such as Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher and Tom Cl ...
Marouane Fellaini grabbed a last-minute winner as Manchester United warmed up for the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Valencia. The Belgian, who has had a tough time at Old Trafford since he was signed by David Moyes nearly a year ago, pounced on a defensive mistake in injury time to ensure the Reds finished their pre-season programme unbeaten. Darren Fletcher had put United ahead early in the second half, after Wayne Rooney had missed a penalty before the break. Rodrigo equalised in Valencia’s best spell, but just as the friendly looked to be drifting to a draw, substitute Fellaini pounced for the deciding goal. Louis Van Gaal's first game in charge at Old Trafford saw the Dutchman unveil the 3-5-2 system that served him well so far in pre-season, but although United looked comfortable the game only came to life as a contest when Rooney struck his spot kick against the base of the post having been clipped going for an Ashley Young cross. Fletcher put United ahead with a deflected shot from the ' ...

Paul Scholes insists he is ready to tell it how it is in his new role as a TV pundit. But it seems Class of '92 team-mate Gary Neville is already looking to cool him down, after throwing an ice bucket over him. Scholes, who upset Wayne Rooney earlier this summer with his scathing views, joined Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and a host of other Old Trafford favourites for a charity game against non-league Salford City on Thursday night. Neville threw the ice bucket over Scholes as part of a charity cause for the James McCarthy Foundation - not the Everton midfielder, but a young man who suffered a brain tumour in a car accident and wants to complete his 'bucket list' - and the former United midfielder apparently requested that Darren Fletcher be next in line to be soaked. The former England midfielder will embark on his latest career turn next week as a pundit for BT Sport in their Premier League curtain-raiser between United and Swansea. Man United Make Barcelona Midfielder Cesc Fabregas Transfer Priority Number One. This time last week, David MoyesManchester United were preparing for a game against Everton which would ultimately be the last game of his reign as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor. After the Scot’s sacking, Ryan Giggs has been placed in temporary charge for the remaining four league games, starting with the weekend game with Norwich, and all of a sudden, the positivity around Old Trafford has made a welcome return. Giggs, United’s record appearance maker, has promised that the side he picks in his first game as boss, will play with a quick tempo against a Canaries team that are fighting for their Premier League lives. Man Utd players must prove they are 'good enough' to remain at club - Darren Fletcher (Independent)
Darren Fletcher believes the arrival of Juan Mata has been the shining light in an otherwise disappointing season for Manchester United. The Spaniard, who swapped Chelsea for Old Trafford in January, netted twice as United cruised to a 4-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday. Despite their win at St James' Park at the weekend, defending champions United remain a lowly sixth in the Premier League standings. However, Fletcher believes the addition of playmaker Mata stands them in great stead for next season, even if David Moyes will be without his star signing on Wednesday as they travel to Germany for a Champions League quarter-final second leg against holders Bayern Munich. "There is so much quality in that dressing room and players are going out there with a point to prove," said Fletcher in the Daily Star. "Of course, it's a shame he can't play against Bayern, but we always knew that. "It's been a disappointing season but he has come in and been fantastic." Fletcher is convinced the £37.1million signing ...
Saw this on a blog and I decide to bring it down here so we could pour out our minds towards it,Manchester United could see two more long- serving stars leave the club in the summer in the shape of Patrice Evra and Darren Fletcher, with David Moyes believed to making contingency plans in case of their exit. The United squad is set to go under a huge reconstruction after their dismal showing in the Premier League this season, and Evra is one of a number of high profile players who is out of contract this summer. David Moyes and Manchester United remain bullish for Olympiakos tie • Manager believes United can win Champions LeagueWayne Rooney says strikeforce is working hard in training From David Moyes and his Manchester United players the message is clear: no one is giving up on the Champions League. Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic all echo the manager's bullishness that a fourth European Cup is not beyond United despite the side standing sixth in the Premier League, 11 points from qualifying for next season's contest. To tout themselves as able to win a tournament that includes the holders, Bayern Munich, who are more formidable this year, and the gilded Barcelona team of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Neymar, sounds fantastical. Yet this is a cup competition and Moyes spoke at the weekend of "doing a Liverpool", who triumphed nine years ago as underdogs, while Chelsea in 2012 also somehow pulled off the trick of lifting the trophy when deeply unfancied. United's quest continues in the last 16 at ...

Three and easy for Utd Danny Welbeck scored twice as Manchester United eased to a comfortable 3-0 win at Aston Villa. In what was a welcome return to form for United, they claimed their first Premier League win since they beat Arsenal over a month ago. After a bright start from Villa, it was United who went ahead on 15 minutes as Welbeck finished from close range after Adnan Januzaj's header had cannoned back off the post. Just minutes later and Welbeck was on hand to convert his second as he slid home to meet Antonio Valencia's cross. The scoring was completed not long into the second half, and it was another well-worked team goal as Tom Cleverley exchanged passes with Wayne Rooney before firing past Brad Guzan. United were also boosted by the return of Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher, who made his first league appearance in nearly 12 months when he came on in the second half. Top five: Premier League zero to heroes A look at five Premier League players who proved supporters wrong with their improved performances 5) Frank Lampard | Chelsea Perhaps a little harsh to include Frank Lampard in this list, which is why he slots in at number five. For the last 10 consecutive seasons he has scored at least 10 goals in the Premier League - an astonishing record - but his first two seasons at Stamford Bridge weren't quite as successful. 4) Carlos Tevez | West Ham Carlos Tevez joined West Ham, along with fellow Argentina international Javier Mascherano, in August 2006. It took him until the following March, when the Hammers already looked doomed to relegation, to score his first goal for the club - in a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Tottenham. 3) Lucas Leiva | Liverpool There was a time, not so long ago, when Lucas could do no right in the eyes of Liverpool supporters. 2) Darren Fletcher | Manchester United Some Manchester United supporters used to claim that Darren Fletcher must have been Sir A ...

Javier Hernandez scored a brace in a 4-1 cup victory, but this just might not be enough to see him keep his place in the starting lineup with Robin Van Persie set to return. With only Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher set to miss this one, Sir Alex Ferguson has plenty of options in almost every position. Nemanja Vidic is expected to return after suffering a concussion in the club's 2-1 win over Liverpool, while Jonny Evans could return to the squad after suffering a hamstring injury. United changes a certainty Sir Alex Ferguson is certain to make changes for Manchester United's Boxing Day encounter with Newcastle.United's failure to beat Swansea saw their advantage in the Premier League title race trimmed to four points. Jonny Evans remains wary of Newcastle's African jewels despite the Magpies' woeful recent form.Alan Pardew's men secured only their second win in 12 games with an unconvincing display against QPR on Saturday. Whereas last season they were scoring goals for fun, this time around it has been far harder, and rather than challenging for a Champions League spot, they have been nervously looking over their shoulders at the drop zone. But Evans does not feel that is a reason for Manchester United to take it easy at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. Manchester United produce more first- team players for clubs in Europe's top 5 leagues than any other team in England, according to research by Sporting Intelligence. Sir Alex Ferguson's side are ranked fifth in the world behind the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, and French clubs Lyon and Rennes. Twenty players who have graduated from the Old Trafford academy have gone on to play in the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 or Serie 'A', one less than French side Rennes who sit fourth with 21 'primary' academy products. The research deemed a primary youth academy prospect to "belong" to a certain club if they had spent three or more years at the facility between the ages of 15 and 21. For Manchester United, that meant the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck all count as home-grown players, and the majority are now first-team regulars. Other players to have come through the ranks at Old Trafford, only then to have moved on, include St ...

MANCHESTER, England (AP) Manchester United fought back to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1 on Saturday, provisionally reclaiming top spot while condemning the bottom-placed team to the worst start any Premier League side has made after 13 games. New QPR manager Harry Redknapp was watching from the stands at Old Trafford as Jamie Mackie gave the London club hope of a first win of the season by scoring the opener. But United responded with three goals in less than 10 minutes, leaving QPR roote to the bottom with just four points. Jonny Evans pulled the hosts level before Darren Fletcher marked his first league start in a year with a goal and Javier Hernandez scored a third. United went two points ahead of Manchester City, which is at Chelsea on Sunday. Initially, QPR had a sense of purpose and stuck to its defensive duties with diligence, even though the visitors were assisted by the lackluster nature of United's display. Stand-in manager Mark Bowen might even have had a goal to celebrate after Mackie converted ...
Harry Redknapp watched from the stands as Manchester United came from behind to beat his new Queens Park Rangers side at Old Trafford. QPR, who announced Redknapp as their new boss on Saturday morning, led when Jamie Mackie pounced from close range. Headers from Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher, on his first league start for over a year, put United in command. Substitute Javier Hernandez stroked in the third as Sir Alex Ferguson's men moved top of the Premier League table. United's three goals in the space of eight second-half minutes puts the pressure firmly back on neighbours Manchester City, who know they can return to the summit by beating Chelsea on Sunday. QPR, who sacked Redknapp's predecessor Mark Hughes on Friday, stay bottom of the table as they remain without a victory in their opening 13 matches. But there will be plenty of positives for Redknapp to take from the match before he assumes control on Monday. Sir Alex Ferguson was satisfied and encouraged by his side's performance in the Capital One Cup triumph against Newcastle. United progressed to a blockbuster tie in the fourth round at Chelsea despite fielding a very inexperienced defence and handing out a total of four senior debuts on the night at Old Trafford. "I'm very pleased," he admitted. "First of all, given the tie was an all-Premier League one and Newcastle are probably a stronger team than us physically, we played some fantastic football. We kept on playing our football and perservered with that and had good composure in our game. "I was really pleased with that and I think we deserved to win. Newcastle are a very powerful team so it's good to get through that one. "Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher were excellent - Wayne understandably tired a little towards the end but that was to be expected. I'm really pleased for the both of them. They have all done really well. Some of them tired but that was understandable as it was a first game for some ...

The midfielder, who suffers from Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel condition, played a full 90 minutes for the reserves last week and is poised to make his first senior appearance since November last year. The Scot laughed and joked with teammates at United's Carrington training ground as United ran through preparations for Wednesday night's opening Champions League fixture with Galatasaray. Fletcher, 28, was included in the squad for United's European campaign, suggesting that a first team return is imminent. Fletcher was named in the United squad for Saturday's 4-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford, but didn't make the bench. And manager Sir Alex Ferguson hasn't yet set a date for Fletcher's comeback. "I don't think Oliver Giroud isn't good enough for the Premier League based on Euro 2012" - Darren Fletcher - he played 32 mins you muppet!!
Scott Wootton's early strike was enough to earn victory in United's first-ever Under-21 league match at Stoke City as Darren Fletcher played the full 90 minutes to continue his bid for full fitness. Barclays U21 Premier League Saturday 18 August Weaver Stadium, Nantwich STOKE U21 0 UNITED U21 1 (Wootton 7)
Molby: RVP a coup, but United need a midfielder. Liverpool legend Jan Molby says Robin Van Persie is a great signing for Manchester United, but they won't win the title unless they sign a top-class midfielder. The signing of Robin Van Persie is obviously a huge coup for Manchester United, and gives them renewed hope of taking back the Premier League title from Manchester City, but it doesn't address one of the fundamental weaknesses of Sir Alex Ferguson's team. The player United actually needed to sign was an out-and-out midfielder, not another forward. I am really surprised that they haven't decided to do anything about that area and I think if they don't before the transfer window closes then it will cost them this season. Ferguson needed to recruit a player like Bastian Schweinsteiger or Javi Martinez, who is on the verge of joining the Germany international at Bayern Munich in a 40 million euro deal from Athletic Bilbao. Those two look like players who are made for Manchester United. Instead they have ...
Scotland captain Darren Fletcher made his Manchester United return following a lengthy lay-off in a 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen in a benefit match for Dons legend Neil Simpson.
One last update for our Mancester United fans before the season starts: The final warm game for United before the season kicks-off vs Everton took place tonight. A United XI lost 2-1 away to Aberdeen in Neil Simpson's Testimonial Game. The United team was a mixed bag made up of youth/reserve players, first team players and club legends. Players like Michael Keane, Paul Scholes and Dwight Yorke all got a run out. Anderson scored United's only goal in a losing effort but perhaps the biggest takeaway from the match was the performance of Darren Fletcher. Fletcher played 30 mins on his first appearance for the club since his nine month absence due to a long term illness. Attention now switches back to the Premier League opener where the big team selection question will be: Who starts in goal? My vote is for De Gea!

An interesting article , have a look. your thoughts ??? Recently it's been more common to see strikers being linked to Manchester United, but do United need another forward ? For example, people want Jan Klass Huntelaar, but at 28, the only other forward he would be younger than is the departing Berbatov, 31. We don't need to look for a fourth striker and we have Will Keane, though injured, rising up the ranks. I'd prefer United to look at further reinforcing the midfield. Someone who can play behind Kagawa and alongside either Carrick, Scholes or even Modric, possibly. These three players are either too slow, too small or can't tackle. Darren Fletcher's football future is in doubt and I'd prefer Phil Jones' focus to be on becoming the world's best centre back. So, let's take a look at three players that can add some power and grit to United's midfield. The obvious choice, with his reputation and proven talent, for the defensive midfielder role is Daniele De Rossi. Although pricey and unlikely to wear the ...
Darren Fletcher shared the following link and had this to say about it: Could Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp make a shock return to the Premier League as manager of Swansea City? GMF investigates here: [Feature] Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp remains in contention for Swansea City job
Darren Fletcher, with all due respect, has won the Premier League four times, the League Cup twice, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the FIFA World Cup. Again, no disrespect to Darren, but I think he himself would wholeheartedly agree that Eden Hazard is a better football player than he is.
FIVE COSTLY GAMES FOR UNITED THAT GAVE AWAY THE TITLE. Manchester United are coming to terms with the loss of their Premier League title to Manchester City. For most of the year it would not have been a surprise, but with six games to go and an eight-point lead, Old Trafford was united in the belief that their big-spending 'noisy neighbours' had been seen off. Here, are the five key games United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will have reason to regret. OCTOBER 23, Man Utd 1 Man City 6 An astounding game saw Mario Balotelli put the Blues ahead before the break. A red card for Jonny Evans was followed by another two City goals and although Darren Fletcher pulled one back, United caved in during the final minutes, conceding three more goals which proved very costly indeed. DECEMBER 31, Man Utd 2 BLACKBURN 3 Having re-established themselves as championship contenders, Ferguson left Wayne Rooney and Darron Gibson out for disciplinary reasons. An ineffective performance from David De Gea allowed Blackburn to establi ...
Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra has pinpohted the absence of captain and centre-back Nemanja Vidic as the massive reason which cost United the premier league title. Evra says he was sometimes forced to play centre-back with Michael Carrick in some games. He noted that another notable absentee from the spine of United was Darren Fletcher.
