Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August. Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run. "I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three." Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp. "He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman. "He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch." Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent. "Now we don't have Daley Blind, w ...

Louis Van Gaal must sell Manchester United stars in 2015. Javier Hernandez has dropped a big hint this week that he plans to leave Manchester United at the end of the season in order to sign a permanent deal with Real Madrid. But he’s not the only star name likely to leave Old Trafford in 2015. The coach still has some serious deadwood to shift from his squad. 1. Chris Smalling has failed to develop in the manner most at Manchester United expected he would after signing him from Fulham in 2010. The England international is a superb athlete, but his footballing intelligence is seriously suspect. 2. Ashley Young’s impressive performances in pre-season lulled many Manchester United supporters and Louis Van Gaal into a false sense of security. Young has flattered to deceive since completing his £17 million move from Aston Villa in 2011 and no longer has any business being near Manchester United’s First Team. 3. Darren Fletcher, The Red Devils’ vice-captain is a model professional who conducts himself ...
Manchester United vs Chelsea: Potential starting line-up - No Di Maria and Herrera. Manchester United vs Chelsea is definetly the biggest test yet this season but there are fresh injury concerns and questions about who should step in for the injuries. Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera are the two biggest concerns and it begs the question – how would United line-up if neither is fit and available for selection? Marouane Fellaini is a shoe-in to start against Chelsea after his performance against West Brom on Monday night but with Antonio Valencia also out injured and Van Gaal reluctant to use Darren Fletcher or Anderson, choosing a midfield partner is more difficult. A lack of options could see Louis Van Gaal play Juan Mata in a deeper role which would also allow Adnan Januzaj to play in a more central No.10 position, somewhere fans feel he can thrive rather than out on the wing. As for up front, with Wayne Rooney suspended the duo of Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao are unlikely to change. What do you ...
Manager Louis Van Gaal said Manchester United have only one senior centre-back available for Saturday's Premier League game against West Ham. Marcos Rojo is fit, but Chris Smalling (leg), Phil Jones (hamstring) and Jonny Evans (ankle) are injured and Tyler Blackett is suspended. Van Gaal said: "All three of my right- sided centre-halves are out, so I'll have to go to the youth system." Potential candidates to play include Tom Thorpe, 21, and Paddy McNair, 19. Neither under-21 captain Thorpe nor McNair, who joined United as a midfielder three years ago, have played for the First Team. Smalling limped out of training on Wednesday and, with Luke Shaw expected to make his debut at left- back following his £28m summer arrival from Southampton, Rojo is likely to move to centre-half against the Hammers. "I won't take risks with players - they have to be fit," said Van Gaal, who is without nine players in total through injury. Midfielders Daley Blind or Darren Fletcher could be employed as centre-backs by United ...

GBAM!!! Rooney named as new Man Utd captain Manchester United have named Wayne Rooney as their new captain. The England international, 28, replaces Nemanja Vidic, who has left the club for Inter Milan, while Darren Fletcher has been named as vice-captain. Rooney will skipper United in the Premier League opener with Swansea at Old Trafford on 16 August. "It is a huge honour and a role I will perform with great pride," said Rooney. "I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me." Rooney - confirmed as captain after the 2-1 friendly win over Valencia on Tuesday night - was one of the favourites for the job once Patrice Evra also asked to leave. Louis Van Gaal unhappy after Manchester United win Manchester United maintained their unbeaten pre-season record with victory over Valencia on Tuesday evening, but Louis Van Gaal described the performance of his team as the ‘worst’ since he has taken charge. Van Gaal wants improvement Van Gaal presided over Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time as they faced La Liga opposition once again, having previously overcome Real Madrid in pre-season, but the former Netherlands manager was not impressed. Darren Fletcher opened the scoring with an effort that deflected horribly before Rodrigo Moreno found an equaliser for the visitors. It was not until the final minute that Marouane Fellaini found a winner, and Van Gaal claims there must be much improvement before facing Swansea on the same ground this weekend. "We have won in spite of that we have played our worst game," Van Gaal told MUTV. "We made a lot of wrong choices, wrong passes and we didn't press too much." Reason for optimism Regardless ...
It was always suggested that succeeding Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager would be the hardest job in football and it proved to be the case for David Moyes at Old Trafford last season. But with the Scot being sacked after guiding United to seventh place, their lowest-ever Premier League finish, Louis Van Gaal has arguably landed the manager's job at the perfect time, with Moyes's failure making it almost impossible for the Dutchman to do any worse. Van Gaal has inherited a rebuilding job at United, but the early signs from the club's pre-season tour of the United States point to a much-improved atmosphere and sense of belief and the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach appears already to have made the team competitive again. The intensity of the Premier League will quickly test United's progress under Van Gaal and tell the manager whether his new 3-4-1-2 formation will work in England. But players who appeared to have no future at United, such as Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher and Tom Cl ...
Marouane Fellaini grabbed a last-minute winner as Manchester United warmed up for the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Valencia. The Belgian, who has had a tough time at Old Trafford since he was signed by David Moyes nearly a year ago, pounced on a defensive mistake in injury time to ensure the Reds finished their pre-season programme unbeaten. Darren Fletcher had put United ahead early in the second half, after Wayne Rooney had missed a penalty before the break. Rodrigo equalised in Valencia’s best spell, but just as the friendly looked to be drifting to a draw, substitute Fellaini pounced for the deciding goal. Louis Van Gaal's first game in charge at Old Trafford saw the Dutchman unveil the 3-5-2 system that served him well so far in pre-season, but although United looked comfortable the game only came to life as a contest when Rooney struck his spot kick against the base of the post having been clipped going for an Ashley Young cross. Fletcher put United ahead with a deflected shot from the ' ...

Substitute Marouane Fellaini scored in second-half stoppage time as Manchester United beat Valencia 2-1 in manager Louis Van Gaal's first home game in charge of the English Premier League club. Wayne Rooney had a first-half penalty saved in the 32nd minute having earlier been felled by defender Antonio Barragan. United broke the deadlock early in the second half when Darren Fletcher slotted home from the edge of the area after Ashley Young's 49th minute corner. The visitors pressed for an equalizer and were rewarded in the 71st when Rodrigo blazed a first-time volley into the roof of the net following a free-kick. Substitute Pablo Piatti poked a shot wide from close range moments later and the La Liga side were left to rue that miss when Fellaini struck late on.

Paul Scholes insists he is ready to tell it how it is in his new role as a TV pundit. But it seems Class of '92 team-mate Gary Neville is already looking to cool him down, after throwing an ice bucket over him. Scholes, who upset Wayne Rooney earlier this summer with his scathing views, joined Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and a host of other Old Trafford favourites for a charity game against non-league Salford City on Thursday night. Neville threw the ice bucket over Scholes as part of a charity cause for the James McCarthy Foundation - not the Everton midfielder, but a young man who suffered a brain tumour in a car accident and wants to complete his 'bucket list' - and the former United midfielder apparently requested that Darren Fletcher be next in line to be soaked. The Former England midfielder will embark on his latest career turn next week as a pundit for BT Sport in their Premier League curtain-raiser between United and Swansea. Forgotten Manchester United stars can revive their careers under Van Gaal Ashley Young, Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher all impressed as the Old Trafford club beat Real Madrid on Saturday, with the Dutchman offering his squad a clean slate Aug 3, 2014 12:00:00 COMMENT By Alex Moretto in Ann Arbor Prior to Manchester United's 3-1 victory over Real Madrid on Saturday, Louis Van Gaal suggested the need for further summer signings may not be as great as has been anticipated. Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has paid tribute to former teammate Park Ji-sung. Park played his last match in professional football at the weekend. The South Korean icon received a hero's farewell during Friday's K League Classic All-Star Game and scored his last-ever goal before predictably winning the Man of the Match award following an entertaining 6-6 draw at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. “I remember him as a big-game player,” Fletcher told manutd.com. “When the big games came around, against the likes of Arsenal and the big Champions League sides, he always stepped up to the plate. He was a great team-mate and a real humble lad in the dressing room. He just went about his job diligently. “For such a big star in Asia – and he really is a superstar there – he never acted that way at all. He was always professional and a great player. Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is confident that the club will regain the ‘fear factor’ that was missing from last season under David Moyes.
Manchester United beat Inter 5-3 on penalties after their International Champions Cup clash finished goalless. The Red Devils scored each of their penalties, with captain Darren Fletcher converting the decisive kick after Marco Andreolli rattled his effort off the crossbar. Manager Louis Van Gaal made four changes to the starting XI that played Roma on Saturday, with Anders Lindegaard, Chris Smalling, Fletcher and Ashley Young returning to the line-up. United came close to breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute with defender Phil Jones, he stooped low to direct his header towards the bottom corner of the net but Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic got his hand to the ball and denied Jonny Evans on the rebound in a goal-mouth scramble. There were few clear-cut chances throughout the first half, though Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Danny Welbeck cut the Italians apart with a thrilling passing move, only for Mata’s low cross to be cut out before it reached Rooney. Wilfried Zaha was the only player in United ...
Louis Van Gaal maintained his unbeaten record as Manchester United boss following a penalty shootout win over Inter Milan in Washington DC. All five United penalty takers found the net in a 5-3 showdown that followed a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes. United only registered one shot on target in the first half, but they upped their game after the break. Substitute Wilfried Zaha, making his first appearance of the tour, was particularly impressive playing as a striker, as was Luke Shaw. Zaha, and Tom Cleverley were unlucky not to be awarded penalties in normal time at the FedEx Field. David De Gea only had one save to make during the match and he watched Marco Andreoli hit the bar from 12 yards, which allowed Darren Fletcher to fire home the winner. Fletcher, Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez, Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa all scored fine penalties. It was a far better performance from 12 yards than the dismal 2-1 shootout defeat to Sunderland in the Capital One Cup semi-final under David Moyes last year. After beati ...

Ryan Giggs marked his first match in charge of Manchester United by leaving out David Moyes' two major signings for Saturday's clash against Norwich. Giggs was appointed as interim manager on Tuesday following Moyes' sacking just 10 months after the Scot arrived at Old Trafford. And the 40-year-old immediately dropped Spanish midfielder Juan Mata, who cost a club record £37.1 million from Chelsea in January, as one of six changes to the team beaten 2-0 at Everton in Moyes' final game last weekend. Mata was named on the bench at Old Trafford, but there was no place in the matchday squad for Belgian midfielder Fellaini, who has endured a miserable season following his £25 million move from Everton. Fellaini had been on the bench at Goodison Park, but he was missing as Giggs recalled Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Antonio Valencia, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck. After the Scot’s sacking, Ryan Giggs has been placed in temporary charge for the remaining four league games, starting with the weekend game with Norwich, and all of a sudden, the positivity around Old Trafford has made a welcome return. Giggs, United’s record appearance maker, has promised that the side he picks in his first game as boss, will play with a quick tempo against a Canaries team that are fighting for their Premier League lives. For Norwich and caretaker manager Neil Adams, Moyes’ sacking could not have come at a worse time. With tough games to follow their trip to Old Trafford, they would have seen this as a winn ...

Bayern Munich 3-1 Manchester United: Guardiola uses his full-backs in midfield, but Bayern better with a standard system April 10, 2014 The starting line-ups Pep Guardiola played an unusual system, but it didn’t help Bayern break down Manchester United. Guardiola fielded Toni Kroos in the pivot role, with Thomas Muller in midfield and Mario Mandzukic returning upfront. David Moyes brought Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher into his midfield, and recalled Patrice Evra and Chris Smalling at the back. The pattern of the game wasn’t significantly different from the first leg, and the major talking point was Guardiola’s use of his two full-backs. Lahm plays two positions It was surprising that Lahm was seemingly deployed as a right-back, considering Guardiola was without both Thiago Alcantara and Bastian Schweinsteiger from his midfield zone, and therefore Lahm was surely required in the holding role he’s occupied for most of this season. However, moving Lahm to right-back also made sense considering Ma ...

West Ham and Hull City are looking at Sunderland midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini, 27, although Genoa are also thought to be interested in bringing the Italy international back to his home country. On a day that you are making a little tactical sense all of a sudden you started making nonsense decisions. Why would you change your best players in a match you needed to score before you qualify.First, you substituted Darren Fletcher who by any account performed better than Michael Carrick (tactically unacceptable).Second, you brought Adnan in and substituted Danny Welbeck who was arguably United's best player of the match. He outplayed the Bayern central defence and performed relatively better than Wayne Rooney (Tactical diarrhea). When you know for a fact Rooney was playing with a toe injury, having played for 70mins just substitute him and bring in Chicharito instead of Welbeck. All is gone now although we lost but we bowed out in dignity contrary to the belief that Manchester United is dead. Manchester United will never die and David Moyes will come out clean and lead Manchester United to the promise land.
I can't believe Darren Fletcher still plays for Manchester United and Nani takes the bench.
Manchester United all the way to the Semis tonight...in King Wazza Wayne Rooney, Shinji Kagawa, Darren Fletcher, Antonio Valencia and David De Gea i believe. O'yinks
David Moyes suggested Wayne Rooney would be fit to play and true to the Manchester United manager's word, the striker is in the starting XI. Rio Ferdinand drops to the bench, with Chris Smalling taking his place in the side. Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher and Shinji Kagawa come in for Alex Buttner, Marouane Fellaini and Ryan Giggs respectively. Meanwhile, defender Dante, midfielder Mario Gotze and forward Mario Mandzukic come into the Bayern Munich side. There is no place for right-back Rafinha, with Philipp Lahm taking up his position.
Manchester United's team for the game against Bayern Munich appears to have leaked, according to the Daily Mirror, with Rio Ferdinand dropped from the side. Chris Smalling takes the place of the veteran defender at centre-back, while Phil Jones is at right-back, and Shinji Kagawa starts in the hole, with Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck out wide. There is also a place for Darren Fletcher, who partners Michael Carrick in midfield. The reported team in full: De Gea; Jones, Smalling, Vidic, Evra; Carrick, Fletcher; Valencia, Kagawa, Welbeck; Rooney.
Darren Fletcher believes the arrival of Juan Mata has been the shining light in an otherwise disappointing season for Manchester United. The Spaniard, who swapped Chelsea for Old Trafford in January, netted twice as United cruised to a 4-0 victory over Newcastle on Saturday. Despite their win at St James' Park at the weekend, defending champions United remain a lowly sixth in the Premier League standings. However, Fletcher believes the addition of playmaker Mata stands them in great stead for next season, even if David Moyes will be without his star signing on Wednesday as they travel to Germany for a Champions League quarter-final second leg against holders Bayern Munich. "There is so much quality in that dressing room and players are going out there with a point to prove," said Fletcher in the Daily Star. "Of course, it's a shame he can't play against Bayern, but we always knew that. "It's been a disappointing season but he has come in and been fantastic." Fletcher is convinced the £37.1million signing ...

Bayern Munich vs Manchester United: Team News and Injury Updates Manchester United travel to Germany on Wednesday night with the knowledge they need to score at least once to advance to the next stage of the Champions League. United showed they were no pushovers in the 1-1 draw between themselves and Bayern Munich last week, but they will need an even bigger performance to topple the European Champions on their own patch. They will, however, be boosted by the news that Wayne Rooney trained on Tuesday after bruising his toe, with the forward expected to start the game. Marouane Fellaini and Rafael missed the session and both remain doubts for the match, with Robin Van Persie definitely out after picking up an injury against Olympiakos in the last round. In Fellaini's absence, manager David Moyes could opt for Phil Jones in midfield to offer the necessary energy to close Bayern's creative players down, though Darren Fletcher could be in contention to partner Michael Carrick instead. Juan Mata is ineligible ...
.David Moyes on fan support and THAT banner.. . Manchester United Manager David Moyes has acknowledged that the support of the fans of the club has always been fantastic, whilst not attaching much importance to the banner of the ‘Wrong One – Moyes Out’ being flown above Old Trafford at the start of the match between them and Aston Villa last evening. “I’ve always found the crowd at Old Trafford has been terrific. I’ve not found what people are saying or writing: I’ve actually found the majority of people are very supportive and understand the job we are doing. We know we have a big job to do here and we are determined to put it right.” BBC Sport, 29th March, 2014 Other quotes: “I was at a dinner last night [Thursday] for Darren Fletcher and there were Manchester United supporters who came up to me and said ‘come on, keep going, we understand exactly the situation the club is in and team is in’. They were really supportive and every time I have been to Old Trafford they have been grea ...
MOYES ADDS CLEVERLEY, ZAHA TO Man Utd SALES LIST Tom Cleverley is up for sale at Manchester United. The Daily Mail says United manager David Moyes plans a massive clearout of senior players. He has a list of players he wishes to move out of the club. These include midfielders Anderson, Nani and Wilfried Zaha and defender Alexander Buttner. Moyes will also listen to good offers for Darren Fletcher, Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez. Meanwhile, Nemanja Vidic is leaving for Inter Milan and Moyes expects to lose Patrice Evra to Serie A and Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs to retirement.
Saw this on a blog and I decide to bring it down here so we could pour out our minds towards it,Manchester United could see two more long- serving stars leave the club in the summer in the shape of Patrice Evra and Darren Fletcher, with David Moyes believed to making contingency plans in case of their exit. The United squad is set to go under a huge reconstruction after their dismal showing in the Premier League this season, and Evra is one of a number of high profile players who is out of contract this summer. Captain Nemanja Vidic has already confirmed he will leave the club after agreeing to join Inter Milan, while questions remain over the future of Rio Ferdinand, who is currently considering his options with the belief that broadcaster BT Sport have lined the Former England international up as their chief football analyst. Ma frds check on dis. Having spent last summer being linked with a host of talent, who will Manchester United's midfield gain this Summer? Last summer they were linked with the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera but eventually could only seal the arrival of Marouane Fellaini. This season the side as a hole have struggled for form, but a lot of attention has been on that midfield that many feel was not adequately strengthened last year. Tom Cleverley has received criticism throughout his United career, while Michael Carrick isn't getting any younger and Darren Fletcher continues his comeback. With that in mind, here are three possible signings that Manchester United would benefit from: 1: İlkay Gündoğan İlkay Gündoğan has remained a common name when discussing potential summer moves for the upcoming transfer window. With financially supreme giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona on the look out, Manchester United will have to act efficiently to earn the services of this terrific German midfielde ...
Giggs gives United a glimpse of what life could be like with a top midfielder.. Following the Welshman’s 140th appearance in the European competition, Goal’s Rahul Bali suggests that his performance has sparked hope for United fans... Manchester United needs a creative midfielder. Probably every football fan on earth is aware of that fact. However, after their failure to lure a top name last summer, they ended up with Marouane Fellaini for a whopping £27.5m on deadline day. “He can play higher up, if we need it, behind the striker or as a defensive or holding midfielder. In any position in the middle of the field he's comfortable. “Because of that I think it's definitely a position where people have said we've been short of numbers, with the likes of Paul Scholes [retiring] and Darren Fletcher not ready to come back just now. I felt we needed to strengthen there and I'm glad we got him,” said David Moyes of his former Everton player. To even state that with Scholes retiring, United bought the B ...
Liam is a Fletcher lookalike for Celtic NEIL LENNON has revealed that 17-year-old Liam Henderson is already being likened to Scotland skipper Darren Fletcher. And after watching the rising star stroll through his first start for the club in the 3-0 win over Kilmarnock on Friday, the Celtic boss understands why comparisons are being made with the Manchester United man. But while Lennon believes the young midfielder is now showing the way to all the other aspiring kids at the club, he is confident Henderson will keep his talented feet very much on the ground. The Parkhead boss is delighted with the colt's progress and attitude and said: "Liam has set a good benchmark for the rest of the kids now. And there are others - before Liam, Darnell Fisher has already come in and has done very well. "Darnell has been pretty steady for us in the games he has played this season. But we think that Liam is cultured. "Someone said he looked a bit like Darren Fletcher on Friday, and I can see the comparisons. "It is obviou ...
International Reds round-up Marouane Fellaini scored for Belgium in a 2-2 draw against Ivory Coast in Brussels to lead our round-up of Manchester United's international players. David Moyes' first major signing for the Reds nodded home a Dries Mertens corner with keeper Mande Sayouba in no man's land in the 17th minute before being replaced at half time. Antonio Valencia's Ecuador staged a remarkable recovery as they won 4-3 against Australia at The Den in London. The skipper saw his side fall 3-0 down but he eventually set up the leveller for Enner Valencia, after the Socceroos were reduced to 10 men. Edison Mendez then snatched a late winner deep into stoppage time following a cross by the United right winger. Darren Fletcher made his Scotland comeback as a second-half substitute, controlling midfield with Scott Brown and helping Gordon Strachan's men record an eye-catching 1-0 success in Poland. Brown notched the winner with 13 minutes remaining. Patrice Evra and Robin Van Persie came face-to-face in P ...
Last Monday, the official Manchester United website released an article publicising the possible candidates for the role of captain from the season 2014/15. The article consisted of 5 possible candidates: David De Gea, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher. At first reaction, it seemed brutal in seeing Robin Van Persie as a main nominee, but as Leonardo Di Caprio so timely proved on Sunday night at the BAFTAs, something as little as a blown kiss to the camera seals the win for just being that fantastic, even without a prize to showboat at the end of it. Similarly, Robin Van Persie has also proven that a trail leaving the words ‘awe-struck’ visible on foreheads sometimes can be just as phenomenal, even if it means that he may not be the leading man at the end of the tunnel, hand on hips, first to absorb the warmth of the Old Trafford crowd. And then I read: “The opinions expressed in this article are personal to the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of Manchester ...

Manchester United have a collection of stars on the verge of the final year of their contracts. Despite clear interest of late from Chelsea, Wayne Rooney looks likely to sign a new deal at Old Trafford worth around £300,000 a week, but David Moyes' potential cull of playing staff mean others face uncertain futures. Antonio Valencia may be handed a short-term extension, Darren Fletcher's status depends on his continued comeback from illness, while Michael Carrick may well be overlooked for a deal due to a downturn in form - with one prospect being early retirement. Tom Cleverley has until November to prove he is worthy of a prolonged stay. Despite the fact he'll be 31 by next summer, Per Mertesacker is likely to be offered a new deal by Arsenal if his current form holds. Mathieu Flamini is in the same boat. Mikel Arteta could be moved on, while Thomas Vermaelen and Abou Diaby are almost certain not to be retained, with the Belgian set to be sold this summer. Napoli are interested. Over at Liverpool, club ...

What is your choice?
Chelsea aim to tie up deals for Paris-Saint Germain's Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani and Southampton left-back Luke Shaw before the start of this summer's World Cup in Brazil. Darren Fletcher has begged boss David Moyes to stick with current squad. Meanwhile, Moyes is keen on bringing Atletico Madrid star Joao Miranda to Manchester United and Moyes is ready to land Toni Kroos - after learning that the Germany international is one of the lowest-paid players at Bayern Munich. Fulham's news record signing Kostas Mitroglou will make his first-team debut at West Brom on Saturday. Manchester United's attempts to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielders Ilkay Gundogan and Marco Reus will be boosted by the German club's willingness to re-sign out-of-favour Shinji Kagawa. Arsene Wenger is lining up Southampton's Morgan Schneiderlin to replace Mikel Arteta at Arsenal. Everton are confident they can fight off interest from AC Milan to keep Spaniard Gerard Deulofeu at Goodison Park next season. Alan Pardew is on the brink ...
David Moyes needs to rethink Manchester United's simplistic tactics The lack of goals from midfield and the reliance on crosses has left out of campions league spot Steve Sidwell may like to offer Manchester United's midfield finishing classes. The Fulham captain's first-half goal in the 2-2 draw at Old Trafford was Sidwell's sixth in the league to double the total returned by United's starting quartet of Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Ashley Young and Juan Mata. For a journeyman midfielder to single- handedly outscore the champions' engine room two-to-one is the latest damning statistic in this season of ever-deepening woe for United and their manager, David Moyes. Until Carrick gave United a 2-1 lead on Sunday, the 32-year-old had yet to register in the campaign. Mata, who managed 20 goals in all competitions last season, has zero in three league games since joining and did not score for Chelsea in the league either, the same number as Fletcher (who has missed most of the season through illness), whi ...

Darren Fletcher says Manchester United are still capable of qualifying for the Champions League this season.
Darren Fletcher insists his pain at Manchester United's present plight has not been lessened by his successful battle against ulcerative colitis. Fletcher's career was hanging in the balance after he was forced to undergo surgery to cure a medical condition that had bothered him since 2010. Had the procedure not worked, the 30-year-old's life as he knew it would have been shattered. Happily, that particular story had a positive outcome, allowing Fletcher to resume his career at Aston Villa in December, since when the Scot has gone on to make eight appearances, including skippering the Red Devils in their League Cup semi-final against Sunderland. His inspirational story provides an obvious example for youngsters affected in a similar way to follow. "You can be running to the toilet 10, 20, 30 times a day and losing a lot of blood," said the Scotland midfielder. "I ended up in hospital a couple of times on an IV drip. Surgery enabled me to be here today. I'm very fortunate. "I found it difficult, making up ...

Nemanja Vidic has been left fuming over his Manchester United contract snub. United team-mate Darren Fletcher admits he 'lied' to hide his chronic illness.
OH, I LOVE DARREN FLETCHER . . ."But since my condition became known, I've had so many letters from mums, dads and children, about how easy it has made their lives, the fact they can go to school and, instead of having to explain ulcerative colitis, they can simply say: 'I've got the same illness as Darren Fletcher.'. . .Oh, how I love this guy!! Darren Fletcher has revealed the full extent of his battle against the career-threatening condition ulcerative colitis, admitting that he went from feeling "untouchable" to having to lie to his Manchester United team-mates to hide the true nature of his illness. Fletcher, who celebrated his 30th birthday last Saturday, has overcome a four-year ordeal with colitis in order to make a first-team return at United, with eight appearances since an emotional comeback against Aston Villa at Villa Park in December. Since first succumbing to the condition in 2010, the Scotland captain has missed more than two years of football and undergone lengthy medical treatment, inclu ...

Juventus star Paul Pogba has revealed he "loved Manchester United" and felt himself "Mancunian" before his bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson. The Frenchman admits the experience has scarred him. The 20-year-old, who made just seven substitute appearances in two years at United, reveals in a documentary screened in France: “It was a very very difficult moment for me because I was in love with Manchester and I was a Mancunian. “And when I arrived I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was Ferguson - I was loving it. “It was the match against Blackburn on December 2011 at Old Trafford. Paul Scholes had retired, Michael Carrick was injured, Darren Fletcher was injured. “There was no one left to play in midfield. And I was training and I was beginning to get better bit by bit and the coach never stopped telling me ‘you’re this far, you’re this far’. “And I didn’t understand. This far away from what? Playing? From having some playing time? From getting on the field. Or what? “And there was Rafae ...

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher says David Moyes' tactical nous was key to Saturday's win over Swansea City.
Manchester United 2 Swansea City 0 Saturday 11 January 2014 Old Trafford | Attendance: 75,035 Manchester United returned to winning ways and avenged last weekend’s FA Cup third round defeat to Swansea City after goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck sealed an important 2-0 victory. The Reds started brightly and could have taken an early lead through Nemanja Vidic, who volleyed over from six yards, before the impressive Adnan Januzaj struck the crossbar with a delicious free-kick moments later. With just over half an hour on the clock, a lovely passing move on the edge of Swansea's area led to Darren Fletcher slicing high and wide, before Welbeck dragged another effort wide of goal, missing the first half’s best chance following some neat approach play from Valencia and Rafael. David Moyes didn’t make any changes at the break, though his side returned for the second half with renewed urgency and immediately scored via Valencia, who slotted in at the far post after Shinji Kagawa’s header was ...

Manchester United's dismal home form extends with Swansea FA Cup defeat: David Moyes ended this dire defeat with his arms folded, entering and exiting the technical area in the vain hope that his Manchester United side could somehow answer Wilfried Bony's late strike. The tie had entered a 90th minute when Wayne Routledge zipped past Darren Fletcher down the left and popped up a ball that the unmarked Bony headed beyond Anders Lindegaard. At the close Moyes was ashen-faced and the unpalatable facts read that this was a fourth home defeat in a month, a fifth in total. With the manager and the United hierarchy contemplating a January transfer window in which little or no strengthening may occur, where the Moyes project goes from this juncture will fascinate. The Scot admitted a pressing need to recruit. "There is an urgency that we would like to bring people in, but are those players available in January? So there is no point in me hyping it up because the players we would like to bring in are probably not ...

Three and easy for Utd Danny Welbeck scored twice as Manchester United eased to a comfortable 3-0 win at Aston Villa. In what was a welcome return to form for United, they claimed their first Premier League win since they beat Arsenal over a month ago. After a bright start from Villa, it was United who went ahead on 15 minutes as Welbeck finished from close range after Adnan Januzaj's header had cannoned back off the post. Just minutes later and Welbeck was on hand to convert his second as he slid home to meet Antonio Valencia's cross. The scoring was completed not long into the second half, and it was another well-worked team goal as Tom Cleverley exchanged passes with Wayne Rooney before firing past Brad Guzan. United were also boosted by the return of Scottish midfielder Darren Fletcher, who made his first league appearance in nearly 12 months when he came on in the second half. David Moyes's side had been staring at a hat-trick of defeats for only the third time in the entire Premier League era. Whils ...

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is backing Darren Fletcher to complete a remarkable return to top-level action. "It's fantastic news that Darren is on his way back. I was over in Manchester about a month ago and I was lucky enough to bump into Fletch and he said he was on the road to recovery. I just met him purely by chance outside the supermarket and it was great to see him. I could see just from talking to him that his tail was really up because he's had a rough time of it, obviously. "It's funny to think I played in his Scotland debut in Oslo. I remember that game well, we actually swapped shirts afterwards and I've still got it at home - I was thinking of digging it out and putting it on for the game on Tuesday night. "I actually played in Fletch's reserve team debut for Manchester United, I was in the reserves quite a lot! I'm not sure he was even 16 at that time but I remember it was a game at Everton and you could just see then that you were watching a fantastic talent. "He'd had loads of injury problems but ...
Solskjaer backing United pal Fletcher to give Scotland boss Strachan big boost for Euro 2016 As Bayern Munich's class of 1999 would readily lament, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows a thing or two about impeccable timing. A last-minute flick of the baby-faced assassin's outstretched boot instantly bestowed him hero status at Manchester United; the Miracle of the Nou Camp ensuring the Old Trafford club were crowned the kings of Europe for the first time since 1968. Now manager of Molde in his native Norway, the still youthful-looking 40-year-old believes his friend and former club-mate Darren Fletcher is destined to make a timely return for Scotland, just as the nation's fortunes are finally in the ascendancy. A team-mate of Fletcher's when he took his reserve bow for the Red Devils, a quirk of fate ensured Solskjaer was also an opponent when Fletcher made his international debut in a 0-0 draw in Oslo in August 2003. Phil Jones can give Manchester United a midfield presence that's been missing since the days of Roy Keane Our man in Manchester, David McDonnell, on why United's Mr. Versatility is can make the defensive midfielder position his own at Old Trafford Midfield general: Phil Jones excelled in the middle of the park against Arsenal When Sir Alex Ferguson, towards the end of his Manchester United reign last season, claimed Phil Jones could become the club's greatest-ever player , there was much sniggering and rolling of eyes. Set against such iconic names as Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, and their laudable achievements, it seemed absurd to entertain the notion that Jones could even be mentioned in the same breath. Although a competent, diligent and hard-working player, Jones lacks the flair and bewitching qualities of those more illustrious names that have pulled on the famous United shirt in the past and captivated fans all over the world. As such, Ferguson may ...
Three Things: Manchester United-Arsenal By John Brewin | November 10, 2013 11:38:33 AM PST MANCHESTER, England -- Three thoughts from Manchester United's 1-0 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford. 1. Developing partnership spells danger "Eight points clear, Robin," sang the Arsenal fans, their triumphalism premature. They have been in understandably good cheer of late, but the appearance of a former idol turned their disposition sour. And especially when Robin Van Persie climbed above Olivier Giroud, his Arsenal replacement, to head home a Wayne Rooney corner in the 27th minute. There was to be no obeying of the modern practice of not celebrating against your old club. Van Persie stretched his arms to their full span in a vindication further revealed by a primal roar. Respect cuts both ways. On Friday, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had mischievously described his former captain as an Arsenal man. Here was his riposte. Like his teammates, determination was writ large on the Dutchman's features. The modern Manch ...
The tapes have been crushed, smashed, destroyed. But eight years on, the fallout from Roy Keane's withering attack on his Manchester United teammates for the club's in- house television station still rumbles on. Sir Alex Ferguson made Keane's infamous hairdryer a centre-piece for his controversial autobiography, despite ordering all copies of the interview, dubbed ‘Roy Keane Plays The Pundit’ at the time, be burned. As Ferguson recalls, Keane didn't miss, running down the team sheet after a dismal 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough. Rio Ferdinand, Edwin van der Sar and Darren Fletcher all copped it, but they weren't alone. “It was unbelievable. He slaughtered everyone. Darren Fletcher got it. Alan Smith. Van der Sar. Roy was taking them all down,” Ferguson recalls. With United limping along in November, Keane also called for a January clearout. It was explosive and such was the interest at the time that media organisations were offering bounties of at least £5,000 for a copy of the tape. The Mirror was ...
David Moyes believes Darren Fletcher is on the road to recovery having made his football comeback earlier this week, though the Manchester United manager is wary of rushing him back into the First Team at Old Trafford. Encouragingly, after months of recovery, the Reds midfielder made his long-awaited return on Monday via a 67 minute outing for the Under-21s, contributing to a 2-2 draw with Fulham at the AJ Bell stadium. And after the match, Fletch revealed his ambition to “get back in the manager’s plans and help on the pitch.” But speaking during his weekly press conference at the Aon Training Complex, Moyes was understandably cautious when quizzed on his Scottish compatriot. “It was his first time putting on a jersey in a competitive game, so we certainly won't be rushing Darren,” the boss explained. “His training has been coming along, he's looking much better in himself and is looking stronger every day. But we won't rush him. We don't want any setbacks with him coming back so we'll take o ...

Manchester United boss David Moyes is keen to involve Darren Fletcher in First Team action. The former Scotland captain has faced a 22-month battle to play again after being diagnosed with a chronic bowel condition. He has not played for United since a Boxing Day win over Newcastle in 2012. The Daily Star says Moyes is keen to re-integrate Fletcher, who has targeted a possible comeback sometime next month. His return to action would be a huge boost to Moyes, who has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since replacing Fergie. -SP
Darren Fletcher close to Manchester United comeback - Daily Star
Manchester United star Darren Fletcher looks set for a return to action in November, according to the Daily Star.
Rooney (2010)... The former United boss has revealed that Wayne Rooney cited a 'lack of ambition' for his wanting to leave Manchester United in 2010. "At that meeting, he [Rooney] was hugely sheepish. I felt he’d been programmed in what he was trying to say. The basis of his complaint was that we were not sufficiently ambitious," he wrote in his autobiography. "My response was to ask Wayne: ‘When have we not challenged for the league in the last 20 years? How many European finals have we been to in the last three or four years? "I told him to say we weren’t ambitious was a nonsense. Wayne said that we should have pursued Mesut Ozil, who had joined Real Madrid from Werder Bremen. "My reply was that it was none of his business who we should have gone for. I told him it was his job to play and perform. My job was to pick the correct teams. And so far I had been getting it right." On How Ronaldo Was Sold... The Scot writes: "Madrid paid £80 million in cash for him, and do you know why? It was a way for ...
read this reds, well worth a read trust me... Roy Keane has accused Sir Alex Ferguson of not knowing the meaning of loyalty after the former Manchester United manager criticised him and other former players at Old Trafford in his new book. Keane responded witheringly after Ferguson reopened the pair's long-running feud by saying the former United captain "absolutely overstepped the mark" in a notorious but never-aired MUTV interview that fast-tracked the Irishman's departure from Old Trafford in 2005. He also effectively rubbished Keane's chances of making a career in football management. Other former United players are criticised in the book, among them Owen Hargreaves and David Beckham. Keane told ITV on Tuesday night: "I think I do remember having a conversation with the manager when I was at the club about loyalty. In my opinion I don't think he knows the meaning of the word. "It doesn't bother me too much what he has to say about me but to constantly criticise other players at the club who brought hi ...
Manchester United manager David Moyes has doubts over defenders Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand for the meeting with Real Sociedad. Midfielder Tom Cleverley has been struggling with a calf injury and missed training on Tuesday. Striker Danny Welbeck was also absent from United's final training session ahead of the Group A tie. United are boosted by the availability of Belgium-born midfielder Adnan Januzaj, who has been added to the Champions League squad as a home-grown player and could make his debut in the competition against the Spaniards. Moyes said: "He is now available for the Champions League by the way his date of birth works. He's an exciting young player making good progress all the time and he is someone who is going to play a big part in the future of Manchester United. He's an exceptional talent." Centre-back Jonny Evans is likely to start if Ferdinand or Vidic are not available. Midfielder Darren Fletcher, who has been hampered by a chronic bowel condition over the past two seasons, joined t ...
Those expecting an explosive account of Sir Alex Ferguson's final 14 years at Manchester United may be a tad disappointed with his autobiography. For while it is indeed laced with barbs at former players and opposition managers, most are also tempered with gushing praise. Wayne Rooney and David Beckham are among those lauded and lamented almost in equal measure. But there is space for some revelations in 'My Autobiography'. Here, I pick out four of the most noteworthy in Sir Alex's memoir. Ronaldo forced to stay an extra year to spite Roman Calderon Background: After a momentous 2007-08 season in which he had established himself as the best player on the planet, Ronaldo was publicly courted by Real Madrid. Los Blancos president Roman Calderon was happy to declare to the media that he was making moves to bring Ronaldo to the Bernabeu, while it became apparent that the player himself had a long-standing ambition to move to the Spanish giants. Ferguson, however, was not amused by the public pursuit, famously ...

Sir Alex Ferguson said an emotional goodbye to Old Trafford after Manchester United's 2-1 win against Swansea on Sunday, thanking the fans for their support and imploring them to get behind successor David Moyes. The record-breaking manager also said he will now be able to enjoy United games rather than "suffer with them", thanking fans, players and staff for their help. With Paul Scholes also retiring from the club for a second time, Sir Alex praised the midfielder as one of the best players the club has ever had, and wished Darren Fletcher a speedy return to first-team football. "I have absolutely no script in my mind. I'm just going to ramble on and hope I get to the core of what this football club means," Sir Alex said. "This is a thank you to Manchester United. Italy international Marchisio, currently on Confederations Cup duty in Brazil, is prepared to leave the Serie A champions - his hometown club - after being told he might be allowed to go for around £24million. Marchisio, 27, said: "I've heard that I might not be so valuable to Juve any more. "I've not been told anything by the club or received any offers and I need to speak to Juve to see if I am still an important player for them. "If that's not the case, it will be normal to look at other teams. It is not only down ...

The PSV Eindhoven midfielder will complete a 9 million Euro move to Old Trafford. Strootman is being brought to the club as a possible replacement for Paul Scholes who retired last season, whilst Darren Fletcher continues to suffer with a serious stomach condition and is unlikely to be a regular First Team player until mid-season. Strootman is able to play as a central midfield playmaker or as a defensive midfielder.

Kagawa scored with a lucky strike in the 42nd minute to extend the lead further. Flamboyant striker Dimitar Berbatov pulled one back for Fulham after 50 minutes with a powerful effort. Barcelona ace may follow Everton star to Manchester United. As David Moyes prepares to embark upon the daunting task of succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, he seems willing to prioritise the strengthening of his Red Devils midfield. And as such, in addition to a rumoured move for combative Everton star Marouane Fellaini, Moyes is also lining up a shock £25m bid for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The retirement of Paul Scholes and uncertain future of Darren Fletcher have forced Moyes’ hand, and he appears ready to part with substantial cash in order to bolster his midfield ranks this summer. A battle with Chelsea for Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric could ensue if Barca aren’t tempted to do business, but the Scotsman is believed to be most keen on securing former Arsenal captain Fabregas. The 26-year-old ex-Gunner would consider a move to the Red Devils, particularly if regular first-team action is guaranteed, but the fact that his former employers have the first option on the tal ...

A Club Statement read:- "Darren Fletcher will be unavailable for the remainder of this season having undergone surgery to resolve his ulcerative colitis condition. "We wish to stress this was a planned procedure undertaken at the optimal time having achieved a period of sustained good general health, as illustrated by the fact that Darren has trained with the team regularly this season and been available for selection right up to the operation. "Whilst it is frustrating for both Darren and the club that he won't be able to contribute further during this camp ...

SIR Alex Ferguson PLEASED WITH THE Manchester UnitED MIDFIELD SIR Alex Ferguson has defended the strength of his midfield department. Manchester United have been eyeing midfielders for two seasons since Paul Scholes announced he was retiring. But the Former England star made a U-turn last season and is still part of what Fergie sees as a six-strong section of the squad. The United boss said: “People say we are short in midfield but I have Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher and Anderson. “So we are not so bad. Carrick and Cleverley were the two against Sunderland last weekend and they did well together.” Fergie can also add the emerging Nick Powell, 18, to that list. But United continue to be linked with midfielders and with Scholes now 38 and Giggs 39, that is hardly surprising. Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder was the original target and the Dutch master is currently in dispute with the Italian club. United have also been eyeing German midfielder Mesut Ozil’s situ ...

Darren Fletcher says Manchester United have the strongest squad in the Barclays Premier League.
Rooney calls for United to score early Wayne Rooney has said that Manchester United need to establish a routine of scoring early goals, after falling behind for a 12th time in 20 games on Saturday before defeating QPR. “I don't know why it is but it's happening too many times," Rooney said. "We need to just go out now and try to get the early goal. As soon as we get a goal, the team settles down and the game settles. We tend to take control of the game. But more often than not we've conceded first and made it hard for ourselves to try to get back in the game then go on and win it.” Darren Fletcher also said United were “very frustrated” by the trend: “It shouldn't take going a goal behind for us to start playing. The only positive thing we can take from it is that every time we do it we seem to respond. But we can't keep making a habit of it.” Fletcher said United's play could have been quicker with players taking “a few more risks with our passes” in the first half. “There's a risk that ...
Manchester United's Darren Fletcher "frustrated" at going behind against Queens Park Rangers
Manchester United made yet another come-from-behind win as they beat QPR 3-1 at Old Trafford. Jamie Mackie gave QPR a shock lead with his second-half tap-in but headers from Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher turned the game on its head before Javier Hernandez completed the scoring for the Red Devils.
MANCHESTER, England (AP) Manchester United fought back to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-1 on Saturday, provisionally reclaiming top spot while condemning the bottom-placed team to the worst start any Premier League side has made after 13 games. New QPR manager Harry Redknapp was watching from the stands at Old Trafford as Jamie Mackie gave the London club hope of a first win of the season by scoring the opener. But United responded with three goals in less than 10 minutes, leaving QPR roote to the bottom with just four points. Jonny Evans pulled the hosts level before Darren Fletcher marked his first league start in a year with a goal and Javier Hernandez scored a third. United went two points ahead of Manchester City, which is at Chelsea on Sunday. Initially, QPR had a sense of purpose and stuck to its defensive duties with diligence, even though the visitors were assisted by the lackluster nature of United's display. Stand-in manager Mark Bowen might even have had a goal to celebrate after Mackie converted ...
