Manchester United beat Inter 5-3 on penalties after their International Champions Cup clash finished goalless. The Red Devils scored each of their penalties, with captain Darren Fletcher converting the decisive kick after Marco Andreolli rattled his effort off the crossbar. Manager Louis van Gaal made four changes to the starting XI that played Roma on Saturday, with Anders Lindegaard, Chris Smalling, Fletcher and Ashley Young returning to the line-up. United came close to breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute with defender Phil Jones, he stooped low to direct his header towards the bottom corner of the net but Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic got his hand to the ball and denied Jonny Evans on the rebound in a goal-mouth scramble. There were few clear-cut chances throughout the first half, though Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Danny Welbeck cut the Italians apart with a thrilling passing move, only for Mata’s low cross to be cut out before it reached Rooney. Wilfried Zaha was the only player in Unitedâ ...
Manchester United's successful Tour 2014, presented by Aon, continued with a penalty shoot-out victory after Louis van Gaal's men were held to a goalless draw by Inter Milan. Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez, Tom Cleverley, Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher all converted from the spot to complete a full set of kicks for the Reds – playing in the new blue third kit for the first time – while Marco Andreolli's miss for Inter proved pivotal at the FedEx Field, home of NFL legends Washington Redskins. Van Gaal started with his three senior centre-backs all on the pitch, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones switching to the middle and right respectively, while Jonny Evans retained the left-sided role in which he began the tour against LA Galaxy. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia took up the wing-back positions, with Ander Herrera and again-captain Darren Fletcher allowing Juan Mata to support Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck. The man who Evans, Jones and Smalling are all striving to replace, Inter's new no.15 Ne ...
13 Set for Old Trafford Exit In Man United Clear-Out. .Veterans Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic and interim boss Ryan Giggs are set to end their Man United playing careers as incoming boss Louis van Gaal looks to bring in fresh blood. .Wingers Nani and Ashley Young have steadfastly failed to deliver the goods over the past couple of campaigns and will be looking for new clubs. .Darren Fletcher has looked a shadow of his former self since returning from illness and fellow midfielder Tom Cleverley has, rightly or wrongly, become something of a scapegoat for the shocking campaign David Moyes presided over and both are apparently likely to be offloaded. .Japanese international Shinji Kagawa hasn't come close to the form that made him a much sought after talent at Borussia Dortmund and a move back to the Bundesliga is likely. .Back-up striker Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez are seemingly surplus to requirements as is Dutch left-back Alexander Buttner. .Man United are also looking to sell Marouane ...
Ryan Giggs marked his first match in charge of Manchester United by leaving out David Moyes' two major signings for Saturday's clash against Norwich. Giggs was appointed as interim manager on Tuesday following Moyes' sacking just 10 months after the Scot arrived at Old Trafford. And the 40-year-old immediately dropped Spanish midfielder Juan Mata, who cost a club record ÂŁ37.1 million from Chelsea in January, as one of six changes to the team beaten 2-0 at Everton in Moyes' final game last weekend. Mata was named on the bench at Old Trafford, but there was no place in the matchday squad for Belgian midfielder Fellaini, who has endured a miserable season following his ÂŁ25 million move from Everton. Fellaini had been on the bench at Goodison Park, but he was missing as Giggs recalled Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Antonio Valencia, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck. Mata, Chris Smalling, Alexander Buttner, Jonny Evans, Nani and Darren Fletcher were the players who made way. Vidic, Ferdinand, Cle ...
On a day that you are making a little tactical sense all of a sudden you started making nonsense decisions. Why would you change your best players in a match you needed to score before you qualify.First, you substituted Darren Fletcher who by any account performed better than Michael Carrick (tactically unacceptable).Second, you brought Adnan in and substituted Danny Welbeck who was arguably United's best player of the match. He outplayed the Bayern central defence and performed relatively better than Wayne Rooney (Tactical diarrhea). When you know for a fact Rooney was playing with a toe injury, having played for 70mins just substitute him and bring in Chicharito instead of Welbeck. All is gone now although we lost but we bowed out in dignity contrary to the belief that Manchester United is dead. Manchester United will never die and David Moyes will come out clean and lead Manchester United to the promise land.
Plenty of alterations for Man United from the side which faced Bayern at home, as Rio Ferdinand is dropped in favour of Chris Smalling, while Darren Fletcher comes into the defensive midfield two, with the visitors presumably hoping that the presence of the Scotland international instils some calm. Danny Welbeck features once again, but this time on the left hand side of midfield, given that the English striker can be trusted with defensive responsibility and tracking back.
Manchester United's team for the game against Bayern Munich appears to have leaked, according to the Daily Mirror, with Rio Ferdinand dropped from the side. Chris Smalling takes the place of the veteran defender at centre-back, while Phil Jones is at right-back, and Shinji Kagawa starts in the hole, with Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck out wide. There is also a place for Darren Fletcher, who partners Michael Carrick in midfield. The reported team in full: De Gea; Jones, Smalling, Vidic, Evra; Carrick, Fletcher; Valencia, Kagawa, Welbeck; Rooney.

Reds' national service Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher could make his return to the Scotland national side next week after the Reds midfielder earned his first call-up since 2012. Fletcher is in line to play a part in his nation’s match against Poland in Warsaw on Wednesday as he joins as a host of United players involved in international friendlies. With World Cup qualifiers boxed off in November, Scotland’s neighbours England will take on Denmark at Wembley as manager Roy Hodgson aims to give his men valuable playing time ahead of the 2014 showpiece tournament in Brazil. Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling, Danny Welbeck, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley have all been selected to represent the Three Lions, but Phil Jones misses out through injury. Robin van Persie and Patrice Evra could come up against one another when France take on the Netherlands in what could be an entertaining affair between two former World Cup finalists. Manchester United 2 Swansea City 0 Saturday 11 January 2014 Old Trafford | Attendance: 75,035 Manchester United returned to winning ways and avenged last weekend’s FA Cup third round defeat to Swansea City after goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck sealed an important 2-0 victory. The Reds started brightly and could have taken an early lead through Nemanja Vidic, who volleyed over from six yards, before the impressive Adnan Januzaj struck the crossbar with a delicious free-kick moments later. With just over half an hour on the clock, a lovely passing move on the edge of Swansea's area led to Darren Fletcher slicing high and wide, before Welbeck dragged another effort wide of goal, missing the first half’s best chance following some neat approach play from Valencia and Rafael. David Moyes didn’t make any changes at the break, though his side returned for the second half with renewed urgency and immediately scored via Valencia, who slotted in at the far post after Shinji Kagawa’s header was ...

Ready to batter Newcastle today, they are missing some key players and with Ba and Cisse unable to hit a barn door from 6 yards should be fun. Taylor x 2, Cabaye, Tiote and Ben Arfa all out. A bit of team news, no official line ups just a snippet off football365. "Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez, Chris Smalling and Darren Fletcher will be amongst those hoping to be involved, having been benched or overlooked against Swansea. Rafael needs to shrug off the hamstring injury that kept him out of the Liberty Stadium encounter, but he could come back into contention for a full-back berth. Gabriel Obertan will be hoping to figure at some stage for Newcastle against his former employers. The French winger made his return from injury in a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Saturday and, with so many attacking talents currently sidelined, he could be offered an opportunity to impress against the side that brought in to England. Cheik Tiote must serve a one-match ban after picking up his fifth yellow card of th ...

Manchester United produce more first- team players for clubs in Europe's top 5 leagues than any other team in England, according to research by Sporting Intelligence. Sir Alex Ferguson's side are ranked fifth in the world behind the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, and French clubs Lyon and Rennes. Twenty players who have graduated from the Old Trafford academy have gone on to play in the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 or Serie 'A', one less than French side Rennes who sit fourth with 21 'primary' academy products. The research deemed a primary youth academy prospect to "belong" to a certain club if they had spent three or more years at the facility between the ages of 15 and 21. For Manchester United, that meant the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck all count as home-grown players, and the majority are now first-team regulars. Other players to have come through the ranks at Old Trafford, only then to have moved on, include St ...
Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Man United have the strength in depth to cope with their current injury setbacks ahead of the Manchester derby. Anderson, Nani and Antonio Valencia will all miss Sunday's Etihad Stadium clash through injury while Shinji Kagawa and skipper Nemanja Vidic remain on the sidelines. However, Ferguson is unconcerned by the absentees and is confident in the quality of the players available to him. "I have plenty of experience to bring in. I rested Darren Fletcher against Cluj on Wednesday and just brought him on for the last 10 minutes. "Michael Carrick will be back in. I also have Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez. "That is what big squads allow you to do. You don't have every player every week. Our supporters must recognise that."
