Darren Fletcher on Van Gaal: "It feels like we’ve got the Dutch Sir Alex Ferguson."
It was always suggested that succeeding Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager would be the hardest job in football and it proved to be the case for David Moyes at Old Trafford last season. But with the Scot being sacked after guiding United to seventh place, their lowest-ever Premier League finish, Louis Van Gaal has arguably landed the manager's job at the perfect time, with Moyes's failure making it almost impossible for the Dutchman to do any worse. Van Gaal has inherited a rebuilding job at United, but the early signs from the club's pre-season tour of the United States point to a much-improved atmosphere and sense of belief and the former Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach appears already to have made the team competitive again. The intensity of the Premier League will quickly test United's progress under Van Gaal and tell the manager whether his new 3-4-1-2 formation will work in England. But players who appeared to have no future at United, such as Ashley Young, Darren Fletcher and Tom Cl ...

Claudio Marchisio "would be very proud" if Manchester United tried to buy him from Juventus Juventus schemer Claudio Marchisio has opened the door to a potential move to Manchester United by admitted he'd be proud to be wanted by the Old Trafford giants. David Moyes, who takes over from the retiring Alex Ferguson as manager next month, is seeking midfield reinforcements this summer following the retirement of Paul Scholes and with severe doubts over the future of illness-hit Darren Fletcher. Italy international Marchisio, currently on Confederations Cup duty in Brazil, is prepared to leave the Serie A champions - his hometown club - after being told he might be allowed to go for around £24million. Marchisio, 27, said: "I've heard that I might not be so valuable to Juve any more. "I've not been told anything by the club or received any offers and I need to speak to Juve to see if I am still an important player for them. "If that's not the case, it will be normal to look at other teams. It is not only down ...
Barcelona ace may follow Everton star to Manchester United. As David Moyes prepares to embark upon the daunting task of succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, he seems willing to prioritise the strengthening of his Red Devils midfield. And as such, in addition to a rumoured move for combative Everton star Marouane Fellaini, Moyes is also lining up a shock £25m bid for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The retirement of Paul Scholes and uncertain future of Darren Fletcher have forced Moyes’ hand, and he appears ready to part with substantial cash in order to bolster his midfield ranks this summer. A battle with Chelsea for Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric could ensue if Barca aren’t tempted to do business, but the Scotsman is believed to be most keen on securing former Arsenal captain Fabregas. The 26-year-old ex-Gunner would consider a move to the Red Devils, particularly if regular first-team action is guaranteed, but the fact that his former employers have the first option on the tal ...
Only just seen Alex Ferguson's farewell speech. Thought it was a really nice touch to mention Darren Fletcher.
Manchester United produce more first- team players for clubs in Europe's top 5 leagues than any other team in England, according to research by Sporting Intelligence. Sir Alex Ferguson's side are ranked fifth in the world behind the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, and French clubs Lyon and Rennes. Twenty players who have graduated from the Old Trafford academy have gone on to play in the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 or Serie 'A', one less than French side Rennes who sit fourth with 21 'primary' academy products. The research deemed a primary youth academy prospect to "belong" to a certain club if they had spent three or more years at the facility between the ages of 15 and 21. For Manchester United, that meant the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck all count as home-grown players, and the majority are now first-team regulars. Other players to have come through the ranks at Old Trafford, only then to have moved on, include St ...

"Alex Ferguson will be without Anderson, Antonio Valencia and Nani through injury. Tom Cleverley is almost certainly out with the calf injury he sustained during the Champions League defeat to Cluj. With Shinji Kagawa also still unfit, Ferg uson has Phil Jones, Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes to start alongside Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher. It is a far-from-ideal preparation for United as they seek to avenge the misery inflicted upon them in the league by City last season."
