My memories of Pete Seeger: Sitting on the carpet of my bedroom with the daisy wallpaper, listening to a scratched LP of Peter singing "Abiyoyo" on my Fisher Price turntable. Standing barefoot in the wet grass at the Clearwater Restival, arm in arm with Sandra Jacobs while Pete and Dar Williams led us in a chorus of "To Everything There is a Seaon" while a soft rain fell Marching at an anti-war protest at the Republican National Convention in NYC in 2004 with Donald Keenan, Amy Feldman and George N. Here are the 50 concerts that I remember going to last year. I think the list is complete, but maybe I forgot something. Not included on this list are a couple of shows I had tickets for but couldn't attend, and quite a few other shows I intended to go to but did not. This list includes my 79th through 84th Neil Young concerts and 40th through 43rd for Jeff Tweedy/Wilco. It seems possible that in 2014 my number of Neil Young shows may surpass the number of times I saw the Grateful Dead, but I really don't know exactly how many Dead shows I attended. I was thinking how awesome it would be to host a talk show featuring all of my favorite musical artists, then I realize just how problematic it would be. Dar Williams would probably not like being seated beside King Diamond, and Don Dokken might try to put the moves on Natalie Merchant.
Just watched Get Folked on More Four, and while it was enjoyable, I think it was foolish to tell the story of modern folk music (transatlantic, no less) in just over an hour including adverts. It was nice to see Seth Lakeman, and we acknowledged Guthrie, Dylan, Fairport Convention, Pentangle and Nick Drake, but despite Ewan MacCcoll being namechecked there was no mention of his lovely and much missed daughter Kirsty, Martin Carthy was interviewed by not his daughter Eliza, and while Joan Baez was actually in one of the archive pieces singing next to Bob, her name never came up, nor did Pete Seeger, Simon and Garfunkel, or from the current rostrum of folk stars, Dar Williams. I think a much more substantial exploration is warranted.
It's Monday, so that means the Browns will go shopping for a new quarterback. I thought it was amazing that Wheeden could look so horrible as he racked up some decent numbers. We should all be thankful that music doesn't let us down like sports teams can. This morning we'll hear a higher-than-usual number of songs from the ladies, including Bonnie Raitt, Tori Amos, Alanis Morrissette, Dar Williams, Chrissie with The Pretenders, Emile Sande and Norah Jones. From the guys, we'll enjoy Greg Allman, Jack Johnson, Paul McCartney, Robert Cray, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Matt Nathanson, Amos Lee, Moby, Lou Reed, Shawn Mullins, Tom Petty and more, plus great tracks from bands, including Saints of Valory, Roxy Music, The Stones and The Beatles, Gnarls Barkley, Muse, Train, The Killers, Phantom Planet, Broken Bells, Depeche Mode, Train, R.E.M., Man Man, and in our local music spotlight, The Modern Electric.
