What to expect in rugby in 2014 1. Danny Cipriani finally gets a recall to the England squad. Will be sent home two days later after he simulates sex with a table centrepiece in the middle of a black tie dinner. He will say it's someone else's fault. 2. After weeks at a special, intensive training camp, Dan Lydiate finally grasps what a rugby ball is and what to do with it 3. Brian O'Driscoll retires; Ireland descends into a bitter civil war over the succession to the throne. 4. Scotland find a world-class centre. He is declared a witch and banished from their realm. He signs for Northampton and is not as good as he should be. 5. In his latest wind up at a press conference, Warren Gatland says that the RFU has been infiltrated by communists who are controlled by Beijing. The English rugby media goes into meltdown. 6. Wales prevent more players leaving by building an Israeli/Northern Ireland style peace wall around South Wales. According to a spokesman they are "Not that bothered about North Wales" 7. On e ...

Rugby Update - Lions skipper Sam Warburton captains Wales against South Africa, in the first of four autumn internationals at the Millennium Stadium this month. On the other flank is Dan Lydiate, now based at Racing Metro in France, who lines up for Wales for the first time since the summer of 2012 after long-term injury. Prop Gethin Jenkins will win his 99th cap on Saturday. Backs: Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Jonathan Davies, Scott Williams, Eli Walker, Rhys Priestland, Mike Phillips Forwards: Gethin Jenkins, Richard Hibbard, Adam Jones, Bradley Davies, Alun Wyn Jones, Dan Lydiate, Sam Warburton (c), Toby Faletau Replacements: Ken Owens, Paul James, Scott Andrews, Luke Charteris, Justin Tipuric, Lloyd Williams, James Hook, Liam Williams.
Wales name team to face Boks 2013-11-05 Cardiff - Ospreys wing Eli Walker is set to make his Wales debut against the Springboks after being named in coach Warren Gatland's starting side to face the Springboks at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. The 21-year-old has been given his chance after injury ruled out wing Alex Cuthbert from the first of Wales's four November internationals. Meanwhile Rhys Priestland returns at fly-half after missing all of Wales's Six Nations title-winning campaign last season with an Achilles injury. British and Irish Lions skipper Sam Warburton again captains the side from the back-row where Dan Lydiate, one of the stars of the combined side's 2-1 series win in Australia this year, makes his first Wales appearance since 2012 following an ankle injury. Walker has long been regarded as one of the best finishers in the Celtic League but a back injury ruled him out of both the Six Nations and Wales's two-Test pre-season tour of Japan. "Eli has impressed for his region and while w ...

Gatland: Lions can roar again Warren Gatland: Turns attention backto coaching Wales Warren Gatland believes the British and Irish Lions will have what it takesto end a 42-year wait for a Test seriesvictory over New Zealand. This year's Lions squad are still celebrating a 2-1 success over Australia - their first Test series win since 1997 - achieved with a number of exciting young players playing crucial roles. Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Alex Corbisiero, Sam Warburton, Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau all shone and Gatland expects them to be the world-class talent at the heart of the 2017 touring squad. Asked if he thought the Lions could win in New Zealand, current Lions boss Gatland said: "Yes, I think if we get things right in terms of the preparation and stuff. "If you look at how young this squad is, a lot of them could be around in four years' time. "If they are playing well enough and you have got four more years' experience on some young heads, some young shoulders and they are in their late 20s, t ...
Lion Heartpenny. I don’t know where to start. What a way to win a series, to silence doubters and to show how rugby can be played. Before the whistle blew to start this grand finale to the 2013 Lions tour of Australia, I was wracked by doubt. As the final whistle blew I was jubilant yet slightly bemused as to how we had won so emphatically. As the game progressed the initial Aussie fumble that led to Corbisiero’s opening try teased my hopes whilst the O’Connor Try on half time seemed to confirm my expectations. The first half progressed as expected, summed up by a fan behind me proclaiming this was Lions forwards vs Wallaby backs. We’d been here before, in both previous tests, 60 minutes of competitive play with Lions defence cancelling out Wallaby creativity. Dan Lydiate and George North providing a tackle apiece that Micky Skinner would have been proud of but all the attacking verve coming from the Men in green and gold and instigated by the mercurial Kurtley Beale. In both previous tests ...
So, of the seven 'English' Lions in the squad, only four are English and two of them are Northern. (Corbisiero is American of Italian decent, Vunipola is a Kiwi and Tuilangi Samoan). The only good thing is Jonathan Davies born in Solihull to English parents who moved to Wales when he was young, George North born in Kings Lynn qualifies with Welsh mother, Dan Lydiate born in Salford and raised in Wales so with Toby Faletau who was born in Tonga the Welsh contingent quite reduced. the starting lineup is actually only 6 players from Wales, 3 from Ireland, 4 from England, 1 from Tonga, 1 from USA. Now that sounds better doesn't it?
Australia v Lions Second Test: Preview and Prediction Posted on Jun 28, 2013 After last week’s nerve-shredder in Brisbane, the sea of red rolls into Melbourne for the second and potentially series-defining test. If the first test was tense, this could be on another level. Both sides have made changes, enforced or otherwise, so there will be some new combinations on show. British and Irish Lions Warren Gatland has shown his ruthless side in making five changes to the side that won last weekend, with only two of these due to injury. Mako Vunipola comes onto the loose-head side of the scrum for the injured Corbisiero, with Geoff Parling in the engine room for Paul O’Connell. This should have a positive impact in the loose, with Vunipola’s rampaging ball-carrying, and at the line-out, where Parling is one of the shrewdest operators around. In the back row Dan Lydiate fills Tom Croft’s boots, possibly showing Gatland’s fear that without O’Connell and Corbisiero the pack is a bit lightweight – Lyd ...
Lions Squad Analysis for 2nd Test Posted on Jun 27, 2013 The old adage goes that ‘you should never change a winning team’ but clearly this message has been lost on Warren Gatland, who has made five changes to his test XV ahead of the second test on Saturday. In the forwards, Mako Vunipola and Geoff Parling have replaced Alex Corbisiero and Paul O’Connell, both of whom are injured, and Tom Croft, who drops to the bench, has been replaced by Dan Lydiate. In the backs, Ben Youngs and the fit-again Tommy Bowe are preferred to Mike Phillips and Alex Cuthbert, with the winger dropping to the bench at the expense of Sean Maitland. Vunipola was unlucky to miss out on a starting role in the first test after his imperious form in the warm-up games, but ultimately the decision to opt for Corbisiero, a more proficient scrummager, proved to be the right call. The question now is whether or not Gatland should have selected Ryan Grant, who takes his place on the bench, ahead of Vunipola, with the latter resuming h ...
Tommy Bowe and Dan Lydiate are very clever inclusions as well
Interesting Lions selection for second test! Scrum half Ben Youngs in for Mike Phillips who is not even on the bench, winger Tommy Bowe for Alex Cuthbert, flanker Dan Lydiate for Tom Croft and second row Geoff Parling and prop Vunipola replacing the injured Paul O Connell and Alex Corbisero! History beckons on Saturday! Windsor RFC was rammed last Saturday and great atmosphere! Club opens from 10am for breakfast with KO at 11am. Needless to say the bar is open.
Lions captain Dan Lydiate believes the 35-0 win over the Melbourne Rebels served as a good audition
Lions 2013: captain Dan Lydiate happy with victory over Melbourne Rebels and insists players have impressed
The British and Irish Lions warmed up for the second Test against Australia with an ultimately convincing victory over an outgunned Rebels side in Melbourne. Converted tries from Conor Murray and Sean Maitland in a patchy first half gave the tourists a 14-0 lead at the interval. The coaches said there are opportunities and places in the squad. The boys played out of their skin and have put their hands up” Sean O'Brien and Ben Youngs added further scores either side of a penalty try as the Lions pressed home their superiority. Keeping a game and committed Rebels side scoreless was a tribute to the Lions' second string in the final midweek match of the tour. Manu Tuilagi, O'Brien, Ian Evans, Richard Hibbard, captain Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau all put in impressive shifts in a last effort to force their way into Test contention. Whether any player did enough to play their way into the starting side on Saturday is debatable, although Tuilagi proved his trademark power was intact on his return from a shoul ...
British & Irish Lions O’Connell ruled out of test series with broken arm Posted on Jun 24, 2013 | 0 comments O'connell Ireland lock Paul O’Connell has been ruled out of the rest of the test series with a broken arm. It is a huge blow for the tourists, who lose a priceless source of on-field leadership. O’Connell was set to feature in his eighth straight Lions test, but instead will watch from the stands. There is no plan to call up a replacement at this stage. Geoff Parling has been stood down from the Rebels match and is likely to take O’Connell’s place in the test side – Ian Evans comes into the line-up for Tuesday, with Tom Croft onto the bench. Flanker Dan Lydiate will captain the side. British and Irish Lions (revised) vs Melbourne Rebels: 15 Rob Kearney, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Manu Tuilagi, 12 Brad Barritt, 11 Simon Zebo, 10 Owen Farrell, 9 Conor Murray, 8 Toby Faletau, 7 Sean O’Brien, 6 Dan Lydiate (c), 5 Ian Evans, 4 Richie Gray, 3 Dan Cole, 2 Richard Hibbard, 1 Ryan Grant. Replacement ...
Paul O'Connell has been ruled out for the remainder of the Official Lions Rugby tour with a fractured arm. Geoff Parling has since been withdrawn from Tuesday's team after O'Connell's injury was revealed. Ospreys Rugby lock Ian Evans will take Geoff Parling's place in the starting XV and Dan Lydiate will lead captain the side.
On the evidence of the first test, this is my Lions team for the second: 15-Leigh Halfpenny, 14-Alex Cuthbert, 13-Jonathan Davies, 12-Jamie Roberts, 11-George North, 10-Justin Tipuric, 9-Mike Phillips; 1- Gethin Jenkins, 2-Richard Hibbard, 3-Adam Jones, 4- Alun Wyn Jones, 5-Ian Evans , 6-Dan Lydiate, 7- Sam Warburton (capt), 8-Toby Faletau. I realise this selection will be contentious because of playing Tipuric out of position, but what other choice is there when Dan Biggar isn't in the squad?
who's the Lions key man? No not Alun Wyn Jones, the other one - Dan Lydiate. From
Jamie Roberts and Dan Lydiate both signing for Racing Metro. Johnny Sexton also going to Racing Metro. this could be great
While on the Lions it looks a lot like the test team has been picked with a couple of places dependent on injuries. Jamie Roberts has hamstring problems and George North and Manu Tuilagi are still doubtful. The forwards who started yesterday look safe with Tom Croft's lineout ability shading Dan Lydiate's defensive mastery. Jonathan Davies did his chances no harm with a man of the match display. This is how I see them lining up on Saturday Backs:Halfpenny - Cuthbert - Davies - O'Driscoll - North/Zebo - Sexton - Phillips. Forwards: Vanipola - Tom Youngs - Adam Jones - Wyn-Jones - O'Connell - Croft - Warburton - Heaslip.
LUNCHTIME SPORTS UPDATE GAELIC GAMES Offaly's footballers will be without three key players for the upcoming qualifiers Johnny Maloney and Brian Connor are set to depart for America while surgery on a long standing shoulder injury will sideline Anton Sullivan for the rest of the summer Offaly lost by four points to Kildare last weekend and await the qualifier draw on Monday week RUGBY UNION Tommy Bowe is on the only Irish starter for Saturdays clash with Queensland Reds in Brisbane. Captain Sam Warburton makes his first appearance of the tour. Hogg is at full back with Cuthbert and Bowe on the wings and Tuilagi and Davies in the centre. Owen Farrell and Ben Youngs are the half backs. Gethin Jenkins , Tom Youngs and Matt Stevens are the front 3 while Richie Gray and Geoff Parling form the second row. Dan Lydiate , Sam Warburton and Toby Faletau are the back row. Paul O'Connell , Conor Murray and Jonathan Sexton are on the bench. SOCCER Ahead of tomorrow's World Cup qualifier at home to Faroe Islands Irelan ...
So the Lions first game is over and from the score line alone, I'd say the exceeded expectations. What can we glean, if anything, from this early performance? For one, I'd say Farrell needs to mature and not be so hot headed. Right now I'd say he's a target for the Wallabies. Interesting to see Dan Lydiate's height at the back of the line out being put to good use and even Jamie Roberts and Alex Cuthbert under the high ball. I liked Mike Phillips' physicality and determination but thought Conor Murray distributed the ball better. Too early to make Test decisions yet but some players certainly did themselves some favours.
A Welsh-heavy Great British and Irish Lions side opened their Tour with a straightforward 59-8 victory over the Barbarians in Hong Kong. The Lions ran in eight tries – with seven of them coming from Welshmen. Captain Paul O'Connell was the only non-Welshman to get over as he scored the opening try of the Tour while scrum-half Mike Phillips and winger Alex Cuthbert helped themselves to two tries each. Jonathan Davies, Dan Lydiate and replacement Alun Wyn-Jones also went over on a day when Warren Gatland decided to start with nine Welsh players and 11 Lions debutants. England's Owen Farrell had an up and down performance at fly-half before being replaced by Ireland's Jonny Sexton who himself missed three, admittedly tough, conversion attempts. Kahn Fotuali'I off a lovely set-up from former All Black Joe Rokocoko scored the only try for an enthusiastic, but ultimately outmatched Barbarians side who should have had Schalk Brits sent-off for a clear punch on Farrell after just eight minutes only for referee ...
Warren Gatland has selected 11 Welshmen in his squad to face the BarbariansWales will dominate the opening match of the 2013 British & Irish Lions with nine players selected to start against the Barbarians in Hong Kong. Centre pair Jamie Roberts and Jonathan Davies continue their winning Test partnership in midfield alongside Six Nations try hero Alex Cuthbert. Three Ospreys forwards will start at Hong Kong Stadium including front-row pair Adam Jones and Richard Hibbard as well as flanker Justin Tipuric who gets the nod after tour captain Sam Warburton was ruled out with a knee injury. Tipuric lines up between Newport Gwent Dragons pair Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau in an all-Wales back-row in front of scrum-half Mike Phillips. The veteran Test number nine will provide crucial experience for half-back partner Owen Farrell who is joined by Saracens team-mate Mako Vunipola. Scotland's trio of tourists, Stuart Hogg, Sean Maitland and Richie Gray all start while 2009 captain Paul O'Connell will lead the team i ...

Dan Lydiate.. Ken Owens.. Dafydd Jones.. Neil Jenkins and Shane WIlliams if he's back!
So onto the rugby. The first game sees WALES host IRELAND. Both have injuries to key players. Dan Lydiate was immense last season for the Welsh and he leaves a big hole. There are intriguing battles across the field especially with the Lions tour upcoming. Full backs Rob Kearney and Leigh Halfpenny go head to head and the legend that is Brian O'Driscoll meets his old centre partner from 2009 Jamie Roberts. I got this result wrong last year with Wales winning in the last minute. I will again go for Ireland to win a thriller.
Six Nations preview; Wales v Ireland Wales captain Sam Warburton has held off the challenge of Justin Tipuric and will line-up in his usual openside flanker berth against Ireland on Saturday. Speculation had been rife that Warburton’s position was under-threat and that he may be moved across the back-row to the blinside as a result of Tipuric’s outstanding form and an injury to first choice No.6 Dan Lydiate. But caretaker coach Rob Howley has kept faith with Warburton and Tipuric will start on the bench with Aaron Shingler and Toby Faletau set to pack down at blindside and No.8 respectively. Elsewhere, Dragons lock Andrew Coombs is set to make his Test debut with Wales battling an injury crisis that has sidelined Alun Wyn Jones, Luke Charteris and Bradley Davies. As a result, Coombs will partner Ian Evans in the second row while Adam Jones returns at tight-head prop after missing the autumn whitewash with a knee injury. Dan Biggar gets the nod ahead of James Hook at fly-half with Rhy Priestland also o ...
Wales confident they can put awful autumn behind them It has been one piece of bad news after another for Welsh rugby fans recently. A painfully poor autumn series saw them lose to Argentina, Samoa, New Zealand and Australia, on the back of a 3-0 whitewash on their summer tour down under. It is their worst sequence of results since the 2002/2003 season, when they lost 10 games on the bounce, and their misery has been compounded by consistently bad reports from the physios. On the medical front, Rhys Priestland, Luke Charteris, Bradley Davies, Aaron Jarvis, Alun Wyn Jones, Dan Lydiate and Huw Bennett will all certainly be absent for at least the beginning of the tournament. There is some slightly more optimistic news, however, concerning other players. “Ian (Evans) and Ryan (Jones) are being assessed on a daily basis, but it’s still very much positive,” says Rob Howley. “We’ll be in a better position to know if they’ll be available on Monday. In reference to Ryan, the scans have showed there’ ...
