Still regret not getting to the Tate Modern to see the last Damien Hirst exhibition
Just been working, with BBC1 Pointless on in the background. My ear was caught by the final category, "Contemporary artists", which was then refined into Young British Artists of 1997 (are you listening Sharyn?). The contestants - who had themselves chosen this category - came up with David Hockney, Damien Hirst and Banksy. Now, the point of Pointless is to find an answer that the majority of the audience don't know or don't guess. However, every single artist was "pointless", apart from Hirst who scored only five points, and Tracey Emin who scored a little more, apparently. The others were: Chris Ofili, Gavin Turk, Gillian Wearing, Marc Quinn, Mark Wallinger, Michael Landy, Rachel Whiteread, Sarah Lucas, Sam Taylor-Wood. All totally pointless, because nobody in the audience had heard of them. How about a visit to Tate Modern, folks?
There is no party more tantalising than one you’re banned from. It was in that spirit that I joined the 100-strong throng outside the Tate Modern Art gallery in London on Thursday to see the Damien Hirst exhibition. But while my fellow queuers were buzzing in anticipation of Hirst’s dots, pills and…
What is wrong with Modern Art, and why is Artour Oshakantsi unique? 16 October By Professor H. I. PILIKIAN Classical painting always produced Meaning and Beauty, in contrast to Modern Art which can be meaningless, pointless, and a deliberate act of the conscious cult of the Ugly – Marcel Duchamp’s Urinal (1917) labeled Fountain, which obviously some modernists who love *** lavatory humor consider it to be ... beautiful and inversely exciting. Oshakantsi’s paintings restore Meaning and true Beauty in the ugly scene of the modernist British Art; Damien Hirst’s death-obsessed dead animals, Tracy Emin’s filthy sex-bed, Chris Ofili’s prettified huge elephant-dung droppings... Artour Oshakantsi would surrender his art to none of those stupidities merely to gain recognition at London’s Tate Modern. The New York Metropolitan Museum’s powerful affirmation of his work is acknowledgment enough for him. Even Oshakantsi’s own Blue Period (reminiscent of Picasso’s Depression-filled Jazz concept) ...
ANIMAL CRUELTY IN THE NAME OF ART AND FUN! I never know if these things are really true ... but knowing what horrors human beings are capable of, I wouldn't be surprised if this disgusting art display is real! Why?! Animals are helpless ... and at 'the mercy' of humans, who foolishly consider themselves to be superior, acting as if they own the planet and the entire Universe. Last fall has been a rough for animals in the "art" world. First, we found out that British bad boy Damien Hirst killed 9,000 butterflies for a questionable installation at the Tate Modern. Then we came across Belgian artist Jan Fabre's cat-throwing performance video, in which he, well, throws cats up a flight of stairs. This disappointing pair of artsy acts against animals got us thinking... Have artists always been this insensitive to animals' rights? We did some digging and found 15 instances of artists abusing or at least questionably involving animals in their artwork. From forcing ants to consume McDonald's food in an enclosed ...

Damien Hirst retrospective exhibition at Tate Modern in London.
I used to think Damien Hirst was superficial. But seeing his exhibition at the Tate Modern completely changed that.
Aha I can answer that, it's a Damien Hirst shirt, I think from an exhibition at the Tate Modern. ;)
Damien Hirst's retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012 was most visited show in Tate's history, with 5.3m visitors
This past summer the Tate Modern exhibited a Damien Hirst retrospective. Perhaps the most popular room in the exhibit was the last: the gift shop. Here, one could purchase Damien Hirst ceramic plates, cufflinks, silk scarves and skateboards, deckchairs and clocks, among numerous other nik-naks (incl...

Spent the afternoon at Tate Modern with Liz. Once we'd worked our way past Picasso and Miro we hit the moment when she asked why or whether this really was art - much of it is pretty hard to defend and it's even worse at the Saatchi Gallery. Please indicate whether you're more of a Singer Sargent fan or Gilbert & George groupie. I promise not to judge you on your answers!

Damien Hirst at Tate Modern: the making of my diamond skull - video via
So finally I was able to ask the director of Tate Modern directly about what the definition of art today is. For those who are still confused by the Turner Prize, here it is - out of the mouths of babes: - art is a decision- making process where upon the artist is the person who decides what is art - and what is not art. It doesn´t require anything to be an artist, so therefore everyone is an artist and everything is artwork. Today´s art is not any longer about ownership - so the artists like Banksy and Ai WeiWei are representing the immediate future of art, while Damien Hirst - who´s work you kan still own - is gone with the past. Art is like a sponge - or iCloud absorbing all the trends from one hour to the other, changing what art is very much in the same way as the latest news can change our perception of reality we live in. Still confused? You are supposed to be. Still, what kind of art should we expect to see at Tate in the future? Ceramic and perhaps textiles - but not necessary well made.
I was Google Alerted this little gem today about Damien Hirst —relax, he’s 1 of more than 50 I follow, and the only artist daily net-noted; the topic was an oversized chair/bedpan that had served as a prop for a film, now being sold as a “rare, unique museum piece.” Talk about proverbial writing on (fb) wall, this thing is a real crap crapper. For those convinced of my Hirst fetish, consider yourselves baited, I just see it as viewing the art market and its chief protagonist/antagonist through Google eyes. From the gallery: "Commode Chair for 100% Weird (i'd venture it's not fully 34% weird) Medium: welded steel chair with bedpan seat. Year of Work: 1994, Height 75.2 in.; Width 21.1 in.; Depth 18.9 in. The Film 100% weird was considered to provocative so has only been shown (publically) for the first time during the Tate Gallery Retrospective. A quantity of paperwork relating to this UNIQUE piece and a copy of the film comes with the chair. I’m sure you know that Unique sculptures by him are ...

The artist Damien Hirst is known to stir up controversy: He's submerged a shark in a tank of formaldehyde, ditto a bisected cow and calf, and in an installation called "In and Out of Love," at the Tate Modern, filled two windowless rooms with live butterflies. British Artist Damien Hirst has come under fire in recent days, either for killing too many or not nearly enough butterflies (depending on whom you ask) at a recreation of his 1991 exhibition In and Out of Love as part of a retrospective at the Tate Modern in London. According to the Telegraph,...
Admission to artist Damien Hirst's career-spanning retrospective at London's Tate Modern was $22, but the actual cost was much higher: 9,000 butterflies. That's the number of winged insects killed during the 23-week exhibit "In and Out of Love," which featured two windowless rooms full of (briefly) ...

attacks: From pissing in Duchamp's 'Fountain' to defacing a Rothko Matilda Battersby Monday 08 October 2012 The person who wandered into Tate Modern and brazenly scrawled on a Rothko at the weekend committed a totally unoriginal form of art protest. More creative defacements of valuable artworks (not that I'm recommending that anyone do this) range from peeing in Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" (which is a urinal) to vigorously kissing a Cy Twombly canvas while wearing red lipstick. But whether you're jumping on Tracey Emin's unmade bed or graffiti-ing "Occupy" on a Damien Hirst sculpture, the causes of such "protest" will remain in the public consciousness for about as long as it takes to make the bed again or wipe the marker pen off. Natural human clumsiness has claimed several far more dramatic (and eye-wateringly expensive) victims. Take a minute to think of the man who vomited on a Mondrian and another who put his elbow through a Picasso. Here we round-up some of the most dramatic acts of art vandalism, ...

There's no gravity in painting, so it's even more infinite than space.' Damien Hirst in conversation with Michael Craig-Martin, Tate catalogue, 2012 For his first exhibition at White Cube Bermondsey, Damien Hirst will present a series of dynamic new paintings that he started working on in the summer of 2010. This exhibition coincides with the first UK retrospective of Hirst’s work at Tate Modern. Painting has always been an important part of Hirst's oeuvre, but unlike the spot paintings and photorealist series which were made using a collaborative studio process, this body of work is altogether more personal: painted from life, by Hirst in his Devon studio. The paintings, often intimate in size, could be seen as traditional still life, depicting an array of carefully arranged elements, both natural and inanimate, sometimes momento mori, alon ...

Wee visit to the Tate Modern after work to see the Damien Hirst exhibition. The butterflies are still my favourites.
What is it these days with art about butterflies? They feature along the top of the Tate Modern's homepage for its Damien Hirst retrospective, and the New York Review of Books essay on the show, in its current issue, lingers over an evocative description of Hirst's piece using living butterflies. Now I see on the National Gallery of Canada's site this engrossing short video (by my friend Peter Zimonjic, who does the NGC's clever online video items) on the installing of a sort of butterfly-lined sarcophagus, a work by Laurie Walker called "Pavane for a Dead Princess."

It could be a picture of the Tate Modern if Damien Hirst's work was left to its own devices for a few months.

A proportion of Damien Hirst's work is very good, and he has been important for the regeneration of artistic output in the UK but if you go to Tate Modern go to the Boetti instead. Hockney vs Hirst-Hockney every time.

Sheep, Sharks and live fly's. Guess where I was last night? Damien Hirst at the Tate Modern. What can I say, his work is a talking point and very much of the modern indium (the use of everyday items with themes often repeated). The million pound diamond skull was there and strangely compelling. This form of art isn't my cup of tea, but the boy is a multi millionaire and the same age as me, who am I to say.
This retrospective confirms Damien Hirst as a brilliant and death-obsessed artist – albeit one whose work lost most signs of life long ago

Sell while you can. That is the stark warning from a senior museum figure to anyone who has bought an artwork by Damien Hirst, the self-styled enfant terrible of British Art. Writing in the Opinion pages of today's Independent, Julian Spalding, who has headed some of Britain's foremost public galleries, predicts the bubble will soon burst for Hirst and fellow exponents of what he calls "con art" – a play on the term "conceptual art", the so-called art of ideas. He likens this bubble in the art world to the sub-prime mortgage crisis. It will crash, he says, when collectors realise how "seriously worthless" conceptual art is. Spalding's attack comes as Tate Modern prepares to unveil "the first substantial survey" of Hirst's work in the UK, opening next week. The gallery praises Hirst for creating "iconic work". But Spalding said: "The emperor has nothing on. When the penny drops that these are not art, it's all going to collapse. Hirst should not be in the Tate. He's not an artist. What separates Michelan ...

Damien Hirst was born in 1965. At 18 he took the year-long Foundation Course at what was then known as The Jacob Kramer College of Art in Leeds.
