Once more, tragedy has struck Tampakan, South Cotabato. Early this morning, we received reports from community members that Juvy Capion and her two young children, Pop Capion, aged 13, and John Capion, aged 8, were killed in an alleged military raid in Tampakan. Juvy and her children are of the B'laan indigenous tribe of Bong Mal. Juvy vehemently opposed the presence and operations of SMI Xstrata in their community. Her husband, the B'laan leader Daguil Capion, has been driven into the forests of Tampakan, his life and those of other B'laans with him, under grave threat for their continued opposition to mining. He is accused of leading an ambush against the mining company in 2010. Daguil is the nephew of Gorelmin Malid, who strongly opposed the presence of the mining corporation WMC. Gorelmin was murdered in 2002. The community's ancestral domain is part of the areas covered by the Tampakan mining project of SMI Xstrata.
