![]() ON THIS DAY Feb 25, 1964: Clay knocks out Liston On February 25, 1964, 22-year-old Cassius Clay shocks the odds-makers by dethroning world heavyweight boxing champ Sonny Liston in a seventh-round technical knockout. The dreaded Liston, who had twice demolished former champ Floyd Patterson in one round, was an 8-to-1 favorite. However, Clay predicted victory, boasting that he would "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" and knock out Liston in the eighth round. The fleet-footed and loquacious youngster needed less time to make good on his claim--Liston, complaining of an injured shoulder, failed to answer the seventh-round bell. A few moments later, a new heavyweight champion was proclaimed. Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1942. He started boxing when he was 12 and by age 18 had amassed a record of over 100 wins in amateur competition. In 1959, he won the International Golden Gloves heavyweight title and in 1960 a gold medal in the light heavyweight category at the Summe ...

I'll open this croc's mouth and place my balls inside. Then the croc will close his mouth for one minute. Then he'll open his mouth and I'll remove my balls unscathed. In return for witnessing this spectacle, each of you will buy me a drink." The crowd murmured in unanimous approval. Steve stood up to the bar, dropped his trousers, and placed his privates in the croc's mouth as the crowd gasped. After a minute, Irwin grabbed a beer bottle and smacked the croc *** the top of its head. The croc opened his mouth and he removed his genitals unscathed as promised. The crowd cheered and the first of his free drinks were delivered. Steve stood up again and made another offer. "I'll pay anyone $100 who's willing to give it a try. A hush fell over the crowd. After a while, a hand went up in the back of the bar. A blonde woman timidly spoke up... ...
![]() San Francisco, August 29, 1966. That Monday thousands of people knew that The Beatles were preparing their next concert in Candlestick Park. But very few of them imagined that such performance would be the last one they would make in public. Not even John, Paul, George and Ringo knew it, although they have told us otherwise. For years, we've read plenty of stories about this mythical concert. Legendary for many because it was the last in which the Fab Four made a live performance, although they subsequently continued his musical career in the recording studios. For us, it is something more... it’s the last time the voice of James Paul McCartney could be heard, singing to his fans. The official story has told us, over and over again, that The Beatles were tired, that they were tired and fearful. We have been told that, before leaving the stage, they had already made the decision that the tour, which was about to end, was going to be the last. We have been told about problems of sound, abou ...
![]() Event Fact About Miami I bet you didn’t know that on this day in 1964, a crowd of 8,300 spectators gathered at the Miami Beach Convention Center to see if 22 year old Cassius Clay could put his money where his mouth was. Underdog Clay defeated champion Sonny Liston in a technical knockout to win the world heavyweight boxing crown. To celebrate winning the title, Clay went to a private party at a Miami hotel that was attended by his friend Malcolm X. Two days later, a more restrained Clay announced he was joining the Nation of Islam and took the Muslim name of Muhammad Ali.
![]() Monday, February 25, 2013 – Essay – Cicero’s De Republica (On the Commonwealth) – Guest Essayist: Robert Frank Pence, Founder, The Pence Group Cicero’s De Republica By Robert Frank Pence “Gone, gone for ever is that valour that used to be found in this Republic and caused brave men to suppress a citizen traitor with keener punishment than the most bitter foe.”[1] Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 B.C.E.) had a decision to make. Catiline and his fellow conspirators were going to assassinate Cicero and other Roman senators within hours. What should he do? Knowing that Rome had its enemies, domestic as well as foreign, Cicero immediately had several of the conspirators arrested, taken to prison, and executed, all without extending to them the right of trial. Cicero announced their deaths to the crowd with the word vixerunt (“they had lived,” meaning, euphemistically, “they are dead”). For saving Rome, Cicero was hailed by Quintus Catullus as Pater Patriae, the “father of the country. ...

What an incredible, generous, intimate seventy minutes in a small venue with one of the world's brightest superstars and one of God's most special people. The word "Capacity" took on a new meaning as several hundred folks had to be turned away. The pews were filled. More than two hundred extra chairs were filled. We even filled the choir loft behind the stage with audience members, then put them in the aisles and along the walls. Sandi was as genuine as you can possibly imagine and received several standing ovations. Wow! Just wow!

I suppose that there were electric space heaters. Before I was born my family lived through a big one where houses were washed out to sea, not far from them in Atlantic City. I loved storms. They closed the beaches and we life guards played rock 'n roll and drank beer. Hurricanes meant that the cops came by and told us to evacuate the island. We didn't. But, everything got more real. I had a scuba tank and sometimes I'd have to dive to find a boat or an anchor that pulled free. Hurricanes rocked. About 8 years ago, I got caught in one in Baja. Martin was his name. The eye passed very near. The locals figured it was a cat 3. I may have mentioned that my house was cinderblock and adobe with a palm roof. At the hight of the storm, the wind was blowing the rain through the sliding glass windows and in under the corners ...

In her 30 years of living in Samoa, she was able to speak Samoan fluent and our conversation was in Samoan. ![]() Ever since you were born, I worried and wondered about whether or not I was being the best mother I could be. Did I make you feel important? Did we find enough time for the little things that live on in happy memories - like laughter, and hugs, and "just-between-us" moments? And, even when you stepped out of line or we disagreed, did you always know I loved you? Of all the things in my life that I might have or could have or should have done differently, there's one thing I'd never ever change, and that's having you for a son. If I didn't always find a way to say it, I hope I've always shown it. I'm proud to be your mother and I love you with all my heart and the very depths of my soul. As you begin your growth to manhood, this fact you must know, you'll always be my source of pride, no matter where you go. You must stand up tall and proud, within you feel no fear, for ALL your dreams and goals, sit right before you very near. ![]() SUNNY SUNDAY SHENANIGANS... The ZOFTT had a great crowd out for tennis today. We all won some and lost some, but everybody had a good time and got to play a lot of tennis. We picked up a new guy - Bill Beddingfield - who has been playing tennis in the area and down at North Myrtle Beach for nearly fifty years. Today was his first time playing since November, but it was plain to see that he's got game. Matt Moore was there when I arrived at 12:40. Rick Rogers showed up next, followed by Rodney Creech. Bill Beddingfield came next, but it took a few minutes to figure out who he was. Spencer sneaked up on us next and then Michael Morgan came. I called Glenn Privette and pulled him out from under his Jeep to come play. I put in a call to Grey Weathersby, too, and he said he was coming, but as of 4:30, he still hadn't shown up. Rodney and I (Creech & Chong) challenged Rick and Matt (Fast & Furious) in the first set of the day and they crawled all over our *** Matt was serving like a professional and Rick was .. ...
![]() Rockledge, FL was the backdrop of the latest Ambassador event stop. Viera High School saw a big crowd as the team took on the All-Stars from the Brevard County Sherriff's Office. The event featured the first Harlem Shake halftime show of the tour as many youngsters helped the Ambassadors lead the newest dance craze sweeping the nation. Again it was an honor to partner with an organization that advocates for children, because the Ambassadors, too, advocate for the success of those who come behind us. The recently-elected county sherriff participated as well; he was also on an All-Star team that played the Ambassadors in Titusville, Florida some years ago. Many of the deputy sherriffs on the All-Star team that participated in last year's event were glad to see the Ambassadors for another year. The team was treated to a buffet-style dinner after the event and enjoyed their final day in the Sunshine State as they prepare for the trip to King's Bay Naval Base in Georgia.

![]() Daytona weekend marred by crash Daytona Beach, Florida - Nascar officials ran the Daytona 500 as scheduled on Sunday, saying they were confident of spectator safety after Saturday's crash that injured more than 30 fans and raised the possibility of lawsuits. The race began at 1pm EST and in typical fashion, the always incident-packed Daytona 500 saw an early collision on lap 33 with nine cars involved. No one was injured when several cars spun off the track, including one of the favourites, Tony Stewart, and 2007 Daytona 500 winner Kevin Harvick. Workers had repaired the fencing that was damaged in Saturday's pile-up, which sent debris flying into the crowd and injured spectators on the final lap of the second-tier... ~puffin

![]() NASCAR and Daytona History Part Two. February 15, 1948 First NASCAR sanctioned race . The race took place on Daytona’s beach course and took place only two months after the original meetings held by Bill France. The race consisted of a cement segment and beach segment which made the race much more difficult. Natural elements such as tides and sand conditions added to the many concerns of drivers and because not all areas of the sand were the same. Red Byron won the race. February 22, 1959 Lee Petty wins the first Daytona 500 Daytona International Speedway hosted the first Daytona 500. The posted awards for the race totaled $67,760. A field of 59 cars took the green flag for the start of the 200-lap race. A crowd of 41,000 was on hand. This historic race also had a historic ending. The finish was too close to call, but Lee Petty was eventually named the winner after photographic evidence.

Not asking for any definite commitments at this stage but please give me an idea whether you and any others (other halves, kids) who will be interested so we can get some firmer prices. Please pass on to anyone I may have missed off here and will be interested as we want this to appeal to a wider audience than just the cricket crowd. Plans are to offer a one or two week option. The plan is to spend 7 days in Tobago (a more family friendly island) and then get down to the real sex, drugs and rock'n'roll in the next 7 days in Trinidad. Hopefully we'll be able to arrange 4 games of cricket, two on each island, so if you came just for one week, you'll get at least two games. To avoid the higher prices (of Carnival time and the fact that England are touring in March) we have decided to go in late May 2014 . Chartered flights ...

![]() January 17, 2013 To whom it may concern, Ron Silva, with VA PYRO, has provided the fireworks show for Ocean Park Civic League since its beginning in 2010. Our first two shows were beach shows and our third was a significantly larger barge show over the Chesapeake Bay. Ron took into consideration our unique circumstances such as limited beach access, tidal issues, security, our dense residential area and poor parking to manage the beach shows. For the barge shows he considers tides, boating activity, water depth and viewing area. In addition, he understands the issues involved in creating a combined show for three civic leagues with different leadership and voices. Our first combined show was last year and was seamlessly pulled off. When we do have small issues, which all special events will have, they are handled effectively and professionally. Most issues are dealt with by Ron behind the scenes, without us needing to even be bothered and with a full report after they have been solved. Al ...

Many throwing debris into the stands where we sat. Never did anything large come through the fence until yesterday. Short chat with inspirational chef, LA, and I am feeling irie once again. Before the beach programme, I was given reasons why it is so interesting to walk quietly past. Right on Savage Street, two pretty ladies were discussing and this is what I heard from one of them: ''I am going to leave him. He thinks he's the only man available.'' Moving forward and backward, there was this huge crowd coming from the National Stadium. Apparently a Nigerian evangelist has been operating all day.

Kris, you will be missed. -The Origin of PLOW- -I knew Kris, like many, while working at Knott’s Berry Farm for the Snoopy on Ice Show. Kris always showed more enthusiasm than anyone I’d ever met. He was enthusiastic about the show, he was enthusiastic about the skaters, he was enthusiastic about moving set pieces, about making people laugh, about dancing for no reason, about everything. -During the show, Kris and I waited on opposite wings for a quick set change that would happen at the end of a song. It was ‘Kokomo’ by the Beach Boys, and it was a tricky set change because it involved me and Kris running opposite pieces at each other to a mark in pitch dark, and it was always hard to find. That part made me a little nervous. But during that song, I’d look over and there’s Kris dancing to ‘Kokomo’ ac ...

First to recite his poem was the Yale graduate. He stepped to the microphone and said: “Slowly across the desert sand, trekked a lonely caravan; Men on camels…two by two; their destination? Timbuktu." A big applause went up! No way could the Rasta man top that, they thought. The Rasta man calmly made his way to the microphone and recited: “Me and Tim, went on de road, three thief stop wi, an want wi load. They were three and we were two So I bucked one and Timbuktu." ![]() I Miss Iraq. I Miss My Gun. I Miss My War. A year after coming home from a tour in Iraq, a soldier returns home to find out he left something behind. By Brian Mockenhaupt A few months ago, I found a Web site loaded with pictures and videos from Iraq, the sort that usually aren't seen on the news. I watched insurgent snipers shoot American soldiers and car bombs disintegrate markets, accompanied by tinny music and loud, rhythmic chanting, the soundtrack of the propaganda campaigns. Video cameras focused on empty stretches of road, building anticipation. Humvees rolled into view and the explosions brought mushroom clouds of dirt and smoke and chunks of metal spinning through the air. Other videos and pictures showed insurgents shot dead while planting roadside bombs or killed in firefights and the remains of suicide bombers, people how they're not meant to be seen, no longer whole. The images sickened me, but their familiarity pulled me in, giving comfort, and I couldn't stop. I clicked through more frames, ...

The luck of the Irish had carried them through, with wins over Pittsburgh and even Purdue. The Domers were nestled all snug in their seats, with visions of crystal ... just one team to beat! And I in my hounds tooth and crimson and white, knew for the Irish it could be a long night. When out of the tunnel there arose such a thunder, fans stood to their feet with amazement and wonder. The ground shook like an earthquake had just hit the field, and I felt the Irish fear beginning to build. They scattered and looked for some place to hide, as the announcer proclaimed, "And here come the Tide!" I sang "Yea Alabama," yes I sang every word, as Notre Dame marveled at the elephant herd. Led by a man both lively and quick, everyone knew that he was St. Nick. More rapid than eagles, his coursers then came. He whistled and shouted and called them by name. "Now Lacy! Now Milliner, McCarron and Fluk ...

His family still hadn’t noticed him, but another young man did and swam over to him and brought him to land. His family was so thankful to gentleman for saving their son. They kept in touch with the gentleman for a few years but lost contact with him. The young boy grew up and entered adulthood. He started using drugs and running with the wrong crowd. ![]() A Sinful Man Once when he was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, the crowd was pushing in on him to better hear the Word of God. He noticed two boats tied up. The fishermen had just left them and were out scrubbing their nets. He climbed into the boat that was Simon's and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Sitting there, using the boat for a pulpit, he taught the crowd. When he finished teaching, he said to Simon, "Push out into deep water and let your nets out for a catch." Simon said, "Master, we've been fishing hard all night and haven't caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I'll let out the nets." It was no sooner said than done--a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity. They waved to their partners in the other boat to come help them. They filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch. Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell to his knees before Jesus. "Master, leave. I'm a sinner and can't handle this holiness. Leave me to myself." When they pulled in ...

The next day we went to Rhodes and from there to Patara. 2 We found a ship crossing over to Phoenicia, went on board and set sail. 3 After sighting Cyprus and passing to the south of it, we sailed on to Syria. We landed at Tyre, where our ship was to unload its cargo. 4 We sought out the disciples there and stayed with them seven days. Through the Spirit they urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. 5 When it was time to leave, we left and continued on our way. All of them, including wives and children, accompanied us out of the city, and there on the beach we knelt to pray. 6 After saying goodbye to each other, we went aboard the ship, and they returned home. 7 We continued our voyage from Tyre and landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed with them for a day. 8 Leaving the next day, we reached Caesarea and stayed at the house of Philip the evangelist, one of t ...

We create images--graven ones that can't be changed; we dismiss or accept people, products, programs, and propaganda according to the labels they come under; we know a little about something, and we treat it as though we know everything. I couldn't count the times I've heard nineteenth-century missions and missionaries cited as examples of stupidity and failure. I heard a whole lecture predicated on this assumption. They were bigoted and imperialistic and naive and arrogant and hypocritical. Some of them probably were some of those things. Some twentieth-century missionaries might make the ones of the last century look like paragons by comparison. Missionaries are (and need we go over this again?) human like everybody else, but the world has seen some great ones, some men and women who saw something to which they witnessed with truthfulness and often with real ...

![]() Feedback for today 18/1/2013 What a hot day, but It has been great. Bondi was magical this morning, it now seems like such a long time ago. Ran like a madwoman for 45 minutes, then 10 minutes stretching, push ups and squats in the magical kingdom of the pool, followed by a quick swim. Glorious. Later in the morning, it was off to the glamorous Tamarama for a moving and uplifting memorial service for Paul Fitzgerald, a lovely eccentic and spiritual adventurer. He was also a local pharmacist, who lived right on the beach for more than 30 years, and very unconventionally, raised a beautiful family of 7 children, who shared their love for their father with the huge crowd, in song, stories and sadness and then paddled out (more than 100 joined the family) to scatter his ashes in the ocean that he swam or surfed in every day, whilst the rest of us watched and cheered loudly from the cliffs above. I am sure his spirit will always be with us. And now I am a dripping mess of sweat watching a lovely sunset, at leas ...
