Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal missed out on signing Angel Di Maria for NOTHING. Argentinian superstar Di Maria, 26, joins a long list of big names - including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Toure and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - who nearly joined the Gunners when they were youngsters. Di Maria cost a British record £59.7m when he moved from Real Madrid to Manchester United in the summer, but Wenger admitted they nearly got him when he was just 17. But Wenger says the deal fell through because they could not get Di Maria a work permit - and they now face the same battle as they try to sign Villarreal's Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista. Wenger has called for work permits to be SCRAPPED and borders to be "opened up completely" in football as he claims it is unfair to stop non-European players coming to the Premier League. "We had identified Di Maria when he was 17," he said. "We wanted him to come here. So he goes to Portugal [with Benfica], from Portugal he goes to Spain. Why? Because he could not . ...

In part that confirmed that the Best Players around today are in forward areas of the pitch, rather than at the defensive end. This summer’s transfer market reflects that, with former Chelsea center back David Luiz, a player with some clear flaws, being purchased for close to £50 million by Paris Saint-Germain. Perhaps the most notable area lacking in superstar talent is at defensive midfield ...

Barcelona star Lionel Messi is one of 10 players who have been nominated for the Best Player in Europe award after guiding Argentina to the final of the World Cup. The prolific attacker was controversially handed the World Cup Golden Ball earlier this month ahead of Bayern Munich duo Thomas Muller (Germany) and Arjen Robben (Netherlands) and is now in the frame to bag yet another prestigious individual award. The 10-man shortlist for the prize is dominated by Bayern Munich players, with Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer accompanying the aforementioned Muller and Robben. Real Madrid have two representatives on the list in Portugal attacker Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina's Angel Di Maria, while Colombia star James Rodriguez is the only candidate from Ligue 1. Luis Suarez and Diego Costa, who both switched clubs this summer, complete the shortlist. Sergio Ramos, Thibaut Courtois, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andrea Pirlo and Yaya Toure all narrowly missed out and occupy places 11 to 15. A jury of journalists from each o ...

It's got nothing to do with the fact you are African - some of the Best Players in the world are from that continent. Let me clarify the reason as to why Messi & Ronaldo get more recognition - they are better than you, you mug.
The story about Queens Park Rangers turning down Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was 16 made me smile but he is not the only high-profile player who has made a club curse their judgment. Here are some of the best. 1 Yaya Toure (to Arsenal): Arsene Wenger would do anything to have a player like Toure in his midfield and he could have had him had it not been for a passport problem in 2003. Rather than following his older brother Kolo to Highbury, he went to Donetsk. 2 Cristiano Ronaldo (to Liverpool): How different would the Premier League have been had Ronaldo ended up at Anfield rather than Old Trafford? Liverpool were serious about buying him from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 but they felt his fee and wages were too high for an 18-year-old. 3 Zinedine Zidane (to Blackburn): What we would have done to have Zidane in the Premier League — it might have happened in 1995, too when he was at Bordeaux. He was offered to Blackburn but they were content with having Tim Sherwood(Now spurs manager) 4 Ruud Gullit (to Everto ...

The number of top-class players who have come to the Premier League in their prime is very few: Jurgen Klinsmann, Dennis Bergkamp, Andriy Shevchenko, Michael Ballack, Mesut Ozil and possibly Yaya Toure. The vast majority of others have either come before it -- Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Suarez -- or after it -- Gianfranco Zola, Gianluca Vialli and most of the rest of the initial invasion. There have been some who have found sanctuary here after being undervalued at clubs abroad -- Henry again, Patrick Vieira -- and others who have come from smaller leagues, where success is not (rightly or wrongly) seen as the ultimate gauge of quality: the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ricardo Carvalho. - Rory Smith

It emerged after Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo had won the coveted Ballon d’Or, that neither Ronaldo nor runner-up and winner since 2010, Lionel Messi, voted for the other in their top three. The Portuguese selected Radamel Falcao for first place, followed by Gareth Bale and Mesut Ozil, while the Argentine opted for Barcelona team-mates Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Neymar. England manager Roy Hodgson chose Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic and Robin Van Persie as his top three, while captain Steven Gerrard picked Ronaldo, Messi and Liverpool team-mate Luis Suarez. Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ stand-in captain Vincent Enyeama voted Messi, Ronaldo, Ribery as first, second, and third respectively, while Coach Stephen Keshi voted Yaya Toure, Ribery, and Luiz Suarez as his best three.
Okay let's talk about the I would not dwell on the organization and poor musicianship of our mega celebrated miming kings who can't sing with a live band. Nigeria got into 7 categories and won 6, by my standards that's a clean sweep and I can not fault CAF/GLO or the voters for Mikel Obi John not winning the main trophy, I would rather congratulate Yaya Toure for winning a well deserve third award as the award is an individual award not a collective one. On the lose by Mikel... On one hand almost every Nigerian sport lover is rooting for Cristiano Ronaldo who performed individually well but did not win a pin in 2013 against a Franck Ribery who has lost count of his awards and trophies for 2013 and a Lionel Messi who still managed to wrestle the La-Liga title, the pinchichi and European Golden Boot award from all his competition even with the octopus hands of injuries not letting him to do his thing. Rest in Peace Nelson Mandela. There was no other leader like you. You sacrificed the years of your youth and your entire adult life to be at the forefront of the struggle for freedom. That freedom that my brothers and I can enjoy because of the platform that you and others put down. The most profound thing for me is looking at all the tributes and messages from international figures around the world saluting Mandela. Oprah, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Charlize Theron, Samuel L. Jackson, Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Toure, Chris Rock, Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Dalai Lama, John Smit, Ruud Gullit, Prince William, Hugh Jackman, Morgan Freeman, Muhammed Ali just to name a few. I now realize the how much respect the whole world had for him and how much of a living legend he is. Hamba Kahle Madiba.
Yaya Touré won the BBC Africa footballer of the year ahead of John Obi Mikel. Lionel Messi won the best La Liga player of the year ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo "What are the criteria for these awards?" I ask, "Is it based on individual performances or success in either club or country?" If its individual, Ronaldo deserves it. Being the Best Player on earth in 2013, lead Champions League top scorers last season and currently, scored more goals than any other player in 2013, excluding his solo effort to qualify Portugal for WC14. But if it's by trophy, Messi deserves it. winning La Liga and topped the scorers' ranking in La Liga last season. But on the contrary, Mikel seems to have been more successful than any other player in Africa. Being an integral part of the Europa league winners, Nations cup winners, WCQ squad. This leaves me bewildered. With no sentiments, Yaya Toure has done nothing to deserve the award. I fault Nigeria, who made Moses best ahead of Mikel. It's a sign of "If you can't win within you ...

Wayne Rooney is the only England star nominated for the Ballon D’Or. But FIFA’s 23-man list was a slap in the face for Chelsea, who do not have one nominee despite their first-ever European Cup triumph. Only Didier Drogba made the list — and he left last summer. Three-time winner Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo also made the cut. Manchester City had Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Mario Balotelli nominated following their title triumph. Rooney’s United team-mate Robin Van Persie was listed for his goalscoring exploits with Arsenal before his transfer. Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo is a contender for manager of the year alongside City’s Roberto Mancini and United’s Alex Ferguson. Real Madrid 3-2 Manchester City A tense opening half brought some great saves out of Joe Hart as City looked to be clinging onto the game but a fantastic run and pass from Yaya Toure set Edin Dzeko clear to slot past Iker Casillas in the second period. It didn't take Madrid too long to get level, though, with left-back Marcelo the scorer, cutting in on his right foot to see a deflected shot loop over Joe Hart's despairing dive. With a little under 10 minutes to go, it looked like City might have stolen three points when Kolarov's free kick from wide on the right flew all the way in but again Madrid came back, this time substitute Karim Benzema turning Matija Nastasic and rifling a shot into the bottom corner. And, with a minute left on the clock, Cristiano Ronaldo finally came good for Madrid, cutting in to shoot, with Hart apoplectic at his captain, Vincent Kompany, for ducking out of the way as the shot flew past.
