Alonso: Hard for a German to beat Messi & Ronaldo to Ballon d'Or 19-Nov-2014 The midfielder feels a German player has a chance if the award is decided on team success, but the Madrid and Barca stars have it wrapped up based on individual displays Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso believes that it would be tough for a German player to beat Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi to the Ballon d'Or. The veteran Spaniard made a surprise summer move to the Allianz Arena from Real Madrid, where he played alongside Ronaldo and enjoyed many battles with Messi's Barcelona. A number of Bayern's contingent of German World Cup winners are nominated for the prestigious award, including the likes of Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer, but Alonso feels the Liga pairing are still ahead of the competition in terms of individual performances. He told Sport Bild: "It's a very general question: is the award about individual, personal performances? "In this case, it would be tough against Messi and Ronaldo. Or is it about t ...
Rodriguez, Real Madrid top AP Global Football 10 LONDON (AP) — James Rodriguez held off Cristiano Ronaldo to take the top spot in the Associated Press global football 10 poll on Tuesday. Rodriguez scored twice in Real Madrid's 4-0 win over Granada, a result that kept Madrid at the top of the team vote. For the second straight week, Ronaldo is the runner-up to one of his Madrid teammates, despite scoring his 22nd goal of the season. Last week's winner, Karim Benzema, also scored in Madrid's victory but dropped to fifth. Aurelio Capaldi of RAI Sport in Italy praised Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti for getting the best out of Rodriguez so quickly. "Ancelotti is probably living the best time of his coaching career: 11 wins in a row is an amazing result and the way he's making things work after Real Madrid sold Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso is impressive," Capaldi said. "This also explains why Rodriguez, who is scoring fabulous goals, already fits well in the team." Bayern Munich's 2-1 comeback win over Boruss ...
Cristiano Ronaldo poured cold water on a possible return to Manchester United, claiming his future is with Real Madrid.Ronaldo has openly spoken about his desire to return to Old Trafford in the future, but talk of a move back to Manchester has intensified in recent weeks after Real parted ways with Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso. While Real have replaced the pair with Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez, former president Ramon Calderon said the Portugal captain had become disillusioned in Madrid. Former United defender Gary Neville also talked up Ronaldo's potential return, claiming it is a possibility, with Manchester showcasing their financial strength in the transfer market. However, Ronaldo distanced himself from those rumours after scoring four goals against Elche on Tuesday. "It's nothing important, what's important is Madrid. On a personal level, things are going well and I want to help this shirt," Ronaldo said post-game. "I don't see a need to talk about things outside the club. "It's all speculatio ...
Manchester United boss, Louis Van Gaal, says it's possible to sign Cristiano Ronaldo but it's unlikely Real Madrid will sell him. Reports suggest the reigning Ballon d'Or winner is unhappy at the Santiago Bernabeu, following the departures of Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso and the Portuguese could force his way out the club.
Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, right, duels for the ball with Atletico de Madrid's Juan Fran during a Spanish La Liga soccer match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, Spain, Sunday, Sept 14 2014 . (AP) The die is being cast. The backroom bargaining may have even begun. However, the most potent hope Manchester United fans have of Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford is the fact that Real Madrid have lost. Again. Not just any loss this, but a 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid, which now leaves them six points behind league leaders Barcelona. Real having lost two of their opening three games of the season and all murmurs about Ronaldo not being happy about the changes at Real are getting louder. The spine of the Real team that allowed CR7 to flourish these past years is gone. Angel Di Maria? Gone. Sami Khedira? Gone. Xabi Alonso? Gone. Mesut Ozil? Gone. Ronaldo made it publicly known that he was not happy to lose some of those players, especially Di Maria. Ronaldo did score his 13th goal against A ...

Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Real Madrid for Manchester City? Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set for a shock exit from Real Madrid at the end of season with Manchester City leading the race for his signature. According to The Express, the 29-year-old Portugal international is "determined" to leave the Spanish capital and is thought to be unhappy with the sale of Angel Di Maria to Manchester United and Xabi Alonso to Bayern Munich. Los Blancos are rumoured to be looking for a fee in the region of £60m for the 2014 FIFA Ballon D'or winner and the Premier League champions are said to be a viable destination. However, City may face competition from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain with Les Parisiens willing to meet his wage demands and Real's price tag. The possibility of a return to Old Trafford remains, but manager Louis Van Gaal is reportedly mulling alternative options. Ronaldo scored a penalty in Real's 2-1 derby defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Full time at the Anoeta. Real Sociedad stage a wonderful comeback against Real Madrid to win 4-2 after going two goals down within the first 11 minutes. Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale got Los Blancos off to the perfect start but the hosts rallied before the break and levelled through Inigo Martinez and David Zurutuza. The second half was a relatively even affair but Zururuza again and Carlos Vela both netted to make it 4-2. Carlo Ancelotti has plenty of issues to sort out as Real Madrid prepare for life without Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso. Cristiano Ronaldo also gravely missed! I'm Ogundele Patrick, thanks for joining us, see you next time!

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso says he would have no problem shouting at Cristiano Ronaldo if he felt the need to - but stressed the club's dressing room is now a happy place.
La Decima !!! What a game and what a way to sign off the season. Joga Bonito. - The Best Player of this season Cristiano Ronaldo had to finish it off !! - Athletico madrid didn't deserve such a harsh scoreline - Di Maria the man of the match for me. - Sami Khedira is no Xabi Alonso !! - Filipe Luis, Gabi, Raul Garcia , David Villa were class. Sheer Class - Diego Simeone is the manager of the season for me - Perseverance pays off. Modric, Isco, Carvajal and Marcelo. Xabi Alonso out, Cristiano Ronaldo in, Iker Casillas in, players with experience in Champions League final
Champions League: Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Can Atletico give the football world just one more 'performance?' here I provide the lowdown on tonight's Champions League Final! tonight, Madrid takes over Lisbon in what should be an intense and action filled final. no doubt or envy for the locals as they will surely be backing home boy Cristiano Ronaldo to help his team clinch La Decima from the 'hood' but Atletico are no pushovers- they clinched the Liga in Barcelona's own yard and after many times of being written off or being expected to choke in the run in, they haven't todate and surely one more heist at an unfancied hunting ground a week later isn't much to ask! anyone? Team Selection: both teams pretty much pick themselves save for a few selection dilemmas. no doubt both Diego Simeone and Carlo Ancelloti are very intelligent managers but I wouldn't stake a 'fiver' on suprise selections from the two men! Real are without the suspended Xabi Alonso so Ancelloti might have lost some sleep on whether t ...

Much has been speculated regarding the future of Real Madrid winger 'Angel Di Maria' following the £86m arrival of Gareth Bale from Spurs last summer. During the last January transfer window there was even more debate whether Di Maria would decide that it was then the right time to move on. However, the Argentine declared that he didn’t want to leave, which strongly hinted that he was unsettled at the Bernabeu and wanted to stay and fight for his place. This raises the question to how much further can he get when you have the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bale in front of you..There is no doubt that Di Maria is an incredibly talented player but he is up against the Best Player in the world right now in Ronaldo and the next best in the world in the shape of Bale. After all, the Welshman isn’t the most expensive player in history for nothing. This being said, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has most certainly not disregarded Di Maria from his plans this season but has decided to alter his role by ad ...

FULL PRESS CONFERENCE A very satisfied Carlo Ancelotti talked to the media, saying this was a great win but the real objective hasn't been achieved yet. Joining him this time: Xabi Alonso, Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos. Carlo Ancelotti As usual, he started with his general feelings on the game: "We always expect to pal a perfect game and that's what we did. The first half was fantastic but I'm not surprised. These players are capable of playing like that. It was a perfect game. In the first half, we defended well and used a very effective counter through the ground. The game changed thanks to our set pieces, which we prepared really well". On the performance of the BBC: "They did a great job. They worked really well, and the game turned out to be perfect". On the end of the curse in Munich: "I had won here before, so I had confidence. I can only thank the players because, 12 years later, Madrid will play a Champions League final". On what does getting to the final mean for the team: "It was our first ...
Real Madrid ROAR POWERFULLY INTO FINAL Real Madrid blew Bayern Munich away to reach the Uefa Champions League final with a 4-0 second leg victory which secured a 5-0 aggregate success. Sergio Ramos took advantage of some woeful marking to head home twice from set pieces in the opening 20 minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo put the finishing touch to a devastating counter-attack in the 34th minute in a blistering opening half from the Spanish giants. Ronaldo added a fourth with a late free-kick and the only downside for Carlo Ancelotti's side, who will face either city rivals Atletico Madrid or Chelsea and former boss Jose Mourinho in the Lisbon final next month, was the needless booking for midfielder Xabi Alonso which rules him out of the showpiece. Pep Guardiola's reigning European champions had dominated possession in the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu last week, only to leave Spain with a 1-0 deficit after Karim Benzema struck. Any hopes they had of working their way back into the tie were obliterated by ...
Real thrash Bayern as Ronaldo makes history (PA) Tuesday 29 April 2014 Share Real Madrid moved a step closer to ruling Europe for a tenth time as they blew away defending champions Bayern Munich 4-0 to complete a 5-0 aggregate victory in a record-breaking semi-final. Holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg, a first-half brace from Sergio Ramos and two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo - which took his season's Uefa Champions League tally to a record 16 - handed Los Merengues a comfortable success that takes them to the Estadio da Luz to face either Chelsea or Atletico Madrid on 24 May. The only negative for Real on a night when they took their goal tally in this season's Champions League to 37 - another record - was a booking for Xabi Alonso that rules the midfielder out of the decider. Both teams made just one change from the first leg with Gareth Bale replacing Isco for Real and Thomas Muller coming in for Rafinha for Bayern. There was a minute's silence before proceedings began in honour of former Barcelona . ...
Sergio Ramos actually cried last year in the semi-finals against Borrusia Dortmund, but this year he came back like a beast and scored two wonderful goals! I'm feeling very bad for Xabi Alonso. :| Zidane scored the winner in 2002 CL final for Real Madrid. And now after 12 years he'll make his team score and he'll be on the sideline. Cristiano Ronaldo will be going to his home country for the CL Final. Hala Madrid!
One cannot just watch the highlights for this game. It is saddening. There's the yellow for Xabi Alonso. Bayern Munich 0-4 Real Madrid (0-5 agg) 16’, 20’ Sergio Ramos 34', 89' Cristiano Ronaldo

Champions League semifinal - Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid at Allianz Arena on 30 April 2014. Match starts at 12:30 am India time. It's the clash between two of the biggest spenders in club football. Real Madrid are worth 425 millions and Bayern are worth 314 million pounds in player values. Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola have been good with their respective teams but RM stands a better chance after the 1-0 lead in the first leg. Bayern were tactically naive in the first leg where RM played without Gareth Bale and CR without full fitness. Will the Bavarians get the two required goals and prevent RM from scoring that 1 away goal? Real Madrid: Iker Casillas; Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Dani Carvajal; Ángel di María, Xabi Alonso, Luka Modrić; Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale. Bayern Munich: Manuel Neuer; David Alaba, Dante, Jerome Boateng, Philipp Lahm; Javi Martínez; Franck Ribéry, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos, Arjen Robben; Mario Mandžukić.
English Premier League proteges Xabi Alonso and Luka Modric marshalled the engine room with precision midfielding for Real Madrid last night in a well deserved but shy win at The Bernabou last night. As was Cristiano Ronaldo's display for them in last week's Copa Del Rey Cup Final win against Barca. Well done boys!
Who is to blame for Real Madrid's sudden slump? A poll launched in Madrid following the alarming back-to-back defeats against Barcelona and Sevilla, and Madridistas have spoken loud and clear: it is the players' fault. Some 69% of participants laid the responsibility at the squad's door, while only 20% blamed the coach, Carlo Ancelotti, and just 11% pointed the finger at referees. The second question in our poll asked fans which three players are most guilty of a dip in form over the last two games. Xabi Alonso was the leading candidate, followed by Diego López, Gareth Bale and then Cristiano Ronaldo.
Isco has confessed that he is very happy to be sharing a dressing room with Zinedine Zidane. "We all know 'Zizou'. He was an icon for all of us when he was playing. He assists you, advises you and is a great help," he said. "It's good having Zidane around," Isco went on to say, before admitting: "We're very confident. We're getting good results at a very good time of the season. We're right in it in all three competitions and we hope to end the year that way." Meanwhile, Jesé recalled his debut fondly: "It's a lovely memory. I came on for Cristiano Ronaldo and we were beating Real Sociedad 5-1. It was an adrenaline rush. You want to prove so many things. It is a brilliant memory, playing at this stadium with these fans. I'll never forget it." Xabi Alonso said that "playing at the Bernabéu is a unique feeling", before recalling, "The best memory is when we won the league two years ago at San Mamés. It gave us great satisfaction because we had a brilliant season. We scored a load of goals, the re ...

"REAL REMAIN IN THIRD PLACE" Real Madrid remain in third place in La Liga after being held to a 1-1 draw by Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night at San Mamés in Bilbao. A second half Jesé goal was later cancelled out by an Ibai wondergoal, while Cristiano Ronaldo saw red in a missed opportunity for Los Blancos to move up to second place past Barcelona who were losers on Saturday to Valencia. Manager Carlo Ancelotti opted to go with Jesé in attack rather than the dinged-up Gareth Bale, and so the former Castilla man joined Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in attack for Los Blancos. In midfield, Ángel di María slotted in with Xabi Alonso and Luka Modric while Dani Carvajal, Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo were charged with helping goalkeeper Diego López keep a clean sheet. Unlike previous years’ encounters at the San Mamés when the hosts would be the ones to come out the aggressor, this time it was Real who surged forward in the early going and nearly scored through chances from Ronaldo and Di María in just th ...

Check this out. Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford to dump 10-man Manchester United out of the Uefa Champions League as Real Madrid triumphed 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate. The second leg of the last-16 encounter turned firmly in the favour of the side from Spain the moment referee Cuneyt Cakir brandished a shock red card to Nani in the 56th minute following the winger's clumsy, but not malicious, high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa. United had edged ahead on aggregate shortly after the interval as Sergio Ramos could only divert Nani's drilled low cross into his own net after it had flicked off the foot of Danny Welbeck, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side in the ascendency at that point. But Nani's dismissal sparked a spell of Real pressure which United could not withstand, as substitute Luka Modric, sent on for Arbeloa, curled home a delicious strike from the edge of the box in the 66th minute. And, somewhat inevitably, it was former Manchester United favourite Ronaldo who had the final say, slid ...
Ronaldo left shaken by Madrid success "A very emotional night," was how Cristiano Ronaldo saw it after his goal at Old Trafford eliminated his old side, with Real Madrid CF team-mate Xabi Alonso hailing "a massive step". More news on:

The trio of performers reflected on their side's last-16 success over the English giants but chose to downplay the significance of Nani's red card in the grand scheme of things Xabi Alonso, Luka Modric and Raphael Varane have all spoken of their optimism for the rest of the season following Real Madrid's 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League on Tuesday. The Croatian midfielder, Modric, and Cristiano Ronaldo both struck to ensure the Blancos' place in the last eight of Europe's elite club tournament, and the Spain playmaker was the first to praise his side for their resilience to come back from Sergio Ramos' own goal. "It was a difficult decision for the referee to make, but we have seen many games that playing against 10 can get harder. We produced our best minutes after Nani's sending off," Alonso told Sky Sports. "For 15-20 minutes we played really well. We scored two goals, and after that, credit to United because they pushed us really hard and it was difficult for us not to conced ...

TEAM NEWS Barcelona quartet Carles Puyol, Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas and Xavi are all expected to return to Barca's starting XI, having been rested during the weekend's win over Sevilla in La Liga. David Villa has been passed fit meaning the only concern for the Blaugrana's assistant coach Jordi Roura is defender Adriano, who has a hamstring problem. Real Madrid should have midfielder Xabi Alonso and forward Karim Benzema back from minor injuries. The pair missed Saturday's 2-1 comeback La Liga victory at Deportivo La Coruna, when Jose Mourinho initially left top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench but brought him on in the second half to set up Gonzalo Higuain's late winner. Real Madrid and Manchester United leave press with mixed emotions The Champions League clash at the Bernabéu put writers in ebullient mood, with even complaints about the ref at a minimum By Sid Lowe The Guardian, And so to Manchester with mixed emotions. At one end, David De Gea; at the other, Robin Van Persie; and between them a fascinating, shifting match in which so much happened and so much more could have happened. From that karate kick save to Xabi Alonso clearing off the line, a post and a bar, one each, and a standing ovation for Ryan Giggs, described in one Spanish newspaper as "a living legend". A result in which anything can still happen. "It's in the air," ran Marca's cover. The "it" in question is Cristiano Ronaldo – head, shoulders, and waist above Patrice Evra. "It" is the tie, too. Surely it is better this way. Post-game at the Bernabéu, as the fans headed on to the streets, felt a bit like pre-game did: there was still excitement, expectation – this was fun, and there's another one ...
Sir Alex Ferguson's side took the lead in the 20th minute through a Danny Welbeck header from a Wayne Rooney corner. The home side replied just 10 minutes later through United old boy Cristiano Ronaldo who rose to meet a cross from Angel Di Maria and nod the ball past the excellent David De Gea. Diego Lopez - 7 Stand-in for injured Iker Casillas and looked nervous. Lucky to get away with an ill-advised challenge for a cross as Welbeck almost nicked past him. Good saves in the end. Alvaro Arbeloa - 6 Just as Rafael found it hard down United's right, so did the Former Liverpool man suffer the same experience for Real. Sergio Ramos - 7 His reaction after a challenge got Van Persie booked and kept the Dutchman in check throughout. Poor for Welbeck's goal, though. Raphael Varane - 7 More of a ball-playing centre-half than a stopper and was lucky to get away with collision on Evra. Fabio Coentrao - 8 Was unlucky to see his early shot come back off the post and was denied by De Gea in second-half. Xabi Alonso (O ...
Manchester United were indebted to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper David De Gea as they came away from the Bernabeu with a highly satisfactory Champions League draw against Real Madrid. Danny Welbeck gave Sir Alex Ferguson's side an early lead and a crucial away goal from Wayne Rooney's corner - but Former United golden boy Cristiano Ronaldo inevitably responded with a classic header to draw Real level before the interval. In an enthralling encounter that lived up to Real coach Jose Mourinho's claim that it was "the match the world wanted to see", both sides created opportunities to take a crucial lead to Old Trafford for the second leg of this last-16 tie in three weeks' time. De Gea brilliantly turned Fabio Coentrao's shot on to the post early on and, as a tight and tense game entered its closing stages, Robin Van Persie saw his drive pushed on to the bar by Real keeper Diego Lopez and had another attempt scrambled off the line by Xabi Alonso seconds later. United's Spanish keeper, returning ...
Manchester United recall Rio Ferdinand to the heart of their defence alongside Jonny Evans, so there is no Nemanja Vidic, who is not even in the squad. Michael Carrick joins Phil Jones as the midfield anchor while Shinji Kagawa gives the side an attacking slant with Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck all starting. Real Madrid make five changes to the team that beat Sevilla last weekend with Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil among the inclusions joining star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

Man Utd vs Real Madrid: 5 Stats That Prove United Will Win February 11, 2013 Matt Robinson Sport 3 comments 4,981 views Bernabeu The world is waiting. Manchester United will face Real Madrid on Wednesday night at the Bernabeu, and some of the Best Players in the world will be on show, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin Van Persie seen as the key men for each team. Manchester United are currently sitting top of the English Premier League, 12 points clear of close rivals and current champions Manchester City, whilst the Spanish giants are sitting third, 16 points adrift of Barcelona. League form and statistics are crucial in analysing games, but when it’s a European clash like this anything can happen. With players such as Wayne Rooney, Karim Benzema, Antonio Valencia, Xabi Alonso, Michael Carrick, Angel Di Maria, Nemanji Vidic, and Sergio Ramos all set to be included in some way, the game is going to deliver something special. The last time these two teams met in a competitive fixture was back in 2003 wher ...
It’s hardly a surprise to see that Cristiano Ronaldo would lead the attacking line in this line-up, as the Portuguese Former United player is in hot form – again scoring a hat-trick this weekend. But Marca say that Mourinho will have no place for former Spurs player Luka Modric, Michael Essien or Kaka in his starting team, and that his XI will be as follows:Diego Lopez, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Angel Di Maria, Mesut Ozil, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema
Real Madrid's 4-1 Primera Division stroll over a disappointing Sevilla at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu featured yet another Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick. However, the result did little to clear up some lingering doubts elsewhere in Jose Mourinho's side ahead of Wednesday's Champions League last-16 first leg tie against Manchester United. Madrid's first goal from Karim Benzema was rather fortunate, their second from Ronaldo was an absolute screamer and then Sevilla pretty much folded. With the visitors offering little in attack - and gaping holes in defence - the former Old Trafford hero gleefully added two more on the break after half-time, completing his 20th treble since he left England. Mourinho would presumably have preferred a stiffer test to help him judge form and condition of some players ahead of United's visit. With Barcelona clear in La Liga, both his matchday squad and team were both chosen with more than half an eye on Wednesday. Xabi Alonso and Raphael Varane were not risked due to their ong ...

Ronaldo passes 300 club goals « on: Today at 09:27:44 AM » Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick and passed the landmark of 300 club goals as Real Madrid put a turbulent week behind them with a 4-0 win at home to Getafe in La Liga on Sunday to close to within four points of second-placed Atletico Madrid. The build-up to the game at the Bernabeu had been dominated by a report in Marca sports daily that said captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos had threatened to leave unless coach Jose Mourinho was dismissed. Real president Florentino Perez called a news conference to deny the story and accused the newspaper of lying and the Spanish champions let their football do the talking with a comfortable victory against their city rivals. Mourinho, who turned 50 on Saturday, left several key players out of his starting lineup, including Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira, and Real struggled to break through a determined Getafe defence in the first half. Once Ramos had scrambled the ball into the net at a corner eight m ...
Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso will play their 175th match for Real Madrid
So Mourinho is planning to bench Iker Casillas, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso against Valencia tomorrow.
Only ten Real Madrid players not for sale (including Casillas) Real Madrid management have decided they do not want to sell Iker Casillas. El Economista says Real's board have drawn up a list of players they're prepared to sell - with only ten now regarded as 'untouchable', which includes Casillas. Casillas, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso are the Spanish contingent Real want to keep, added to Pepe, Marcelo, Sami Khedira, Mesut Özil, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Raphaël Varane, Luka Modric and Angel Di Maria can all leave for the right price, as can striker Gonzalo Higuain. tribal football admin andrew
Man Utd WON'T BE GIVING MOURINHO SLEEPLESS NIGHTS Under his hood, Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is unlikely to have been concerned checking on Champions League opponents Manchester United yesterday. In the first 45, United were a class apart from Liverpool . But once the visitors started pressing United's midfield, all the long-standing doubts about Sir Alex Ferguson 's current team again emerged. The midfield struggled to keep the ball, individuals faded and David De Gea, again, let the opposition into the game with an elementary goalkeeping error. If Danny Sturridge and Fabio Borini can give United the shakes, then what chance against Cristiano Ronaldo , Xabi Alonso and Mesut Ozil next month? No matter Real's Liga form, on paper they'reas far ahead of United as the Premier League giants are of Liverpool .
Marcelo back on board Marcelo is the key addition to Real Madrid's squad list for its upcoming league game in Pamplona. José Mourinho has called up 20 players for Saturday's match against Osasuna in the Reyno de Navarra stadium. The full-back hasn't played for three months through injury and has been sorely missed in the first-team. Real Madrid has been unable to find a suitable replacement for him during his absence. The Brazilian, who fractured his right foot, was recently included in the FIFA FIFpro World XI despite not having played since last 14th October, when he was injured whilst on international duty with Brazil. Xabi Alonso will also travel - despite missing the second half of the Spanish Cup tie against Celta de Vigo due to a neck injury, as will Fabio Coentrao and academy player José Rodríguez. Four important players are set to miss the game: Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Antonio Adán (suspended) and Pepe (injured). Reserve team shot stoppers Jesús and Tomás Mejías have both been ...
Madrid missing suspended trio Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho must travel to Osasuna in La Liga on Saturday without the suspended Sergio Ramos, Cristiano Ronaldo and Antonio Adan, although Xabi Alonso is expected to be available despite a neck problem. Ramos begins the five-game suspension he was handed for insulting referee Miguel Angel Ayza Gomez during Wednesday's 4-0 Copa Del Rey victory over Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu. Ronaldo picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in last Sunday's 4-3 win over Real Sociedad, during which Adan was sent off for an early professional foul. Speaking to reporters after Friday's training session at Madrid's Valdebebas facility, striker Gonzalo Higuain said Los Blancos had a strong enough squad to win without the missing players. "They are all important players, but we cannot think about the absences," Higuain said. "We have players to do well and we will go out to show that. "It is always difficult to play there. It is a tough ground, and Osasuna will make things ...
Five questions on why the 2012 FIFA FIFPro XI was dominated by La Liga Samrin Hasib , January 9 2013, When Wesley Sneijder was snubbed in 2010, debates about the FIFPro XI started raging. This time, the controversial selection of 11 La Liga players has raised more questions than ever. First of all, in the line up, Iker Casillas wasthe goalkeeper. The back four consisted of Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos and Marcelo. Xabi Alonso, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta were the midfield trio. Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Falcao made up the front three. 1) Do FIFA and the voters focus more on international competitions? The two teams which contested the Uefa Champions League final contain a total of zero players in the team. Both these teams beat the best teams Spain has to offer. One ofthe two dominated the midfield in their pair of clashes in the semi-final. However, the Champions League is of course a club competition. The professionals who vote perhaps give more importance to international comp ...
I come back home from my exam today to realise that FIFA named a Spanish Primera Liga all-star XI for their FIFPro Team of the Year 2012. Lionel Messi deserved his FIFA Ballon D'Or and Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao, Andres Iniesta and Xabi Alonso deserved their place in the 'dream team' too but Gerard Pique? Dani Alves? Marcelo? Really? Has FIFA gone nuts or do all their officials only watch the Spanish league? Perhaps I'm biased towards the English Premier League but surely there was one or two players worthy of being in that 'Team of the Year'. Robin Van Persie had a terrific year last season, winning the PFA Player of the Year and being the top goalscorer too. His goalscoring record in 2012 was only bettered by Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Radamel Falcao, shouldn't he deserve a place in the team? What about Vincent Kompany? I don't like Manchester City for obvious reasons but I admire him for his leadership qualities, intelligence and never-say-die attitude, abilities that would have made hi ...
messi was named player of the year no problem with that, but looking at the fifa 11 kidogooo. Fifa's world team of the year was: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Dani Alves (Barcelona), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Andres Iniesta (Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Xavi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Radamel Falcao (Atletico Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona). What do you think of this selection?
FIFPro, the world players’ union, invited 50,000 professional players from all over the world to select their best team of 2012, the FIFA FIFPro World XI. The honours went to the following all-star squad: Iker Casillas (Spain) in goal; Dani Alves (Brazil), Marcelo (Brazil), Gerard Piqué (Spain) and Sergio Ramos (Spain) in defence; Xabi Alonso (Spain), Andrés Iniesta (Spain) and Xavi Hernández (Spain) in midfield; and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Radamel Falcao (Colombia) and Lionel Messi (Argentina) up front. who do you think should be a part of the team?
England captain Steven Gerrard voted for Lionel Messi to win, Cristiano Ronaldo second and Xabi Alonso 3rd.
Fifa world XI: Casillas; Alves, Piqué, Ramos, Marcelo, Xabi Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Falcao, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now how about: Buffon; Ramos, Hummels, Kompany, Chiellini; Alonso, Pirlo; Messi, Iniesta, Ronaldo; Falcao. Surely that ^ makes more sense and does justice to the word "world"?
Cesc Fabregas, Xabi Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo. 3 world class players and arguably their former sides Best Players when they left them. Do you think any of them will rejoin their former clubs?
CAN FERGIE'S MIDFIELD OVERCOME REAL? Does Sir Alex Ferguson really believe Manchester United can win the Champions League with his current midfield? They were hardly swashbuckling in qualification from their group and now face Cristiano Ronaldo's Real Madrid. Ferguson insists he's happy with what he has, but Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley will have to have career best games to see off the likes of Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira and Luka Modric. Good enough for the Premier League? Yes. But it's a struggle to believe how Ferguson sees his midfield overcoming what Jose Mourinho can call upon.
French sports newspaper L'Equipe has today revealed it's 2012 Team of the Year, as voted for by football journalists from around the country. The usual suspects all feature with this year's final three FIFA Ballon d'Or nominees - Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta - all making the world XI, which has been set up in a 4-3-3 formation. La Liga is the best represented of Europe's top five domestic divisions, with four Barcelona stars (Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Jordi Alba) and four Real Madrid players (Ronaldo, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso) dominating the make-up of the team. Six of the aforementioned players are Spanish, which has been largely attributed to Los Rojiblancos successful defence of the European Championship trophy in Poland and Ukraine in the summer. The line-up features just two Premier League stars, Vincent Kompany; club captain and defensive backbone of last season's title winners Manchester City, and Ramires; a surprise inclusion from Champions League holders Chelsea, ...

Xabi Alonso says that his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo is just "professional", and while his Real Madrid team-mate is a super confident individual he is not a diva in the dressing-room. Alonso and Ronaldo have been together at Madrid since both joined the club in 2009, and the pair played key roles as Jose Mourinho's side won last season's La Liga title. Despite this success, speculation in the Spanish media suggests the Bernabeu dressing-room is not the most harmonious of places - with Ronaldo having recently revealed his "sadness" and persistent rumours of a split between rival Portuguese and Spanish groups. Alonso was asked how he got on personally with the Portuguese during an interview with Basque TV station ETB on Thursday. "I am not close with Cristiano Ronaldo off the pitch," Alonso said. "He is a very ambitious person, with a very strong personality and high self-esteem. He says what he thinks, does not try to cover anything up. But he is a very important player for the team, and inside th ...

MADRID, Nov 12, 2012 (AFP) - Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has praised his side for battling to a 2-1 win at Levante in challenging conditions, to keep them in sight of league leaders Barcelona and second-placed Atletico Madrid. Youngster Alvaro Morata came off the bench to head home a crucial late winner after just one minute on the pitch on Sunday night, guiding a Xabi Alonso free-kick home for his first league goal for the Spanish champions. Angel Rodriguez had earlier struck a second-half equaliser to level Cristiano Ronaldo's opener and it seemed Madrid would rue a missed penalty by Alonso. The win means Real remain eight points behind Barca who won 4-2 at Mallorca while Atletico remain second, three points behind the leaders, after beating Getafe 2-0 at home. "It's a long time since I've seen a game like that in those conditions, we had to adapt and play 4-4-2 because it was not a game to pass in, it was a battle between two honest sides that gave everything," Real coach Jose Mourinho said. "The t ...

Xabi Alonso, for his part, is not aligned with either faction. The blow-up came after defeat at Sevilla. Soymadridista says Real coach Jose Mourinho refused Sergio Ramos' request to stay overnight with his family. The defender blew-up at Mou's decision, complaining to teammates that the same wouldn't happen to Ronaldo. The coach learned of Ramos' comments and axed him for the Champions League victory over Manchester City. The split has been festering for some time and was highlighted by Ronaldo in his infamous meeting with Real president Florentino Perez on September 1. Ronaldo knows no team can compete seriously for titles with such a fractured dressing room. Everything will depend on this season's Champions League campaign. Anything but a victory is likely to see a frustrated Mourinho leave at the end of the season. Read more at

Diego Maradona;"No one can Beat this Spanish Machine" “No one player can defeat this Spanish machine. Cristiano Ronaldo tried with Portugal, and the Spanish put a muzzle on him. “[Andrea] Pirlo tried and the Spanish crowded him with four players sometimes.” “The Spanish team scored 12 goals and allowed only one in this European Championship,” Maradona elaborated. “Their defence of captain Iker Casillas in goal, Alvaro Arbeloa, Gerard Pique, and Sergio Ramos is the best in the world. “Jordi Alba on the left, showed why Barcelona just spent €14 million for him, scoring a spectacular goal, slicing the Italian defence after a 60-yard dash.” He continued: “The outstanding Spanish generation of Xavi, Sergei Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta, and David Silva are individual stars that work in a machine. “You stop one, the other five are still there, they press, create, and even finish. “Spain have revolutionised football as we know it, playing with no strikers, and using a talented pla ...

Spain advance to final Spain reached their third consecutive major tournament final after overcoming neighbours Portugal 4-2 on penalties in the first Euro 2012 semi-final in Donetsk on Wednesday. After an attritional game finished 0-0 following extra time, Cesc Fabregas swept home the winning spot-kick to put Spain in the final. Xabi Alonso and Joao Moutinho both saw their opening penalties saved, but Portugal blinked first when Zenit Saint-Petersburg centre-back Bruno Alves slammed his side's fourth penalty against the crossbar. Fabregas stepped up and, just as he had done in the penalty shootout win over Italy in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals, the Barcelona man held his nerve, steering the ball into the bottom-left corner to send Portugal home. Reigning world and European champions Spain, who are bidding to become the first team in history to win three major competitions in a row, will face either Italy or Germany in Sunday's final in Kiev. It was a deeply disappointing end to the tournament for Portuga ...

Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso's imperious display against France was particularly eye-catching amid a serious of impressive performances in the UEFA EURO 2012 quarter-finals. Cristiano Ronaldo emphasised his class, Miroslav Klose wrote another chapter in his remarkable international career and Andrea Pirlo mimicked what may be the most famous penalty of all, that of Antonín Panenka in the 1976 UEFA European Championship final. However, Alonso set himself apart with a two-goal masterclass on his 100th cap. Spain now face Portugal in the semi-finals in Donetsk on Wednesday, with Germany playing France in Warsaw the following day. "The four sides who have reached the semis are excellent," said Alonso. "They've performed well to get this far and the games have been really entertaining which is good for the tournament. The best thing is that each of the remaining teams wants to win the ball, dominate possession and to use it to attack. We all deserve to have come this far." All but one of Alonso's 15 internati ...
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is about to find himself in the unenviable position of having to confront both his closest rivals and some of his best friends. In the European Championships semi-final against Spain in Donetsk on Wednesday, Ronaldo will face his Real Madrid friends and teammates Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso.
Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso believes there is no need to make a contingency plan to deal with Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Spain have attracted criticism from some quarters for their apparent below-par displays at Euro 2012 so far, but have conceded just once and are the second-highest scorers left in the competition with eight goals. Ronaldo had a lacklustre start to the competition, but has come to the fore in his country's last two games, scoring all three goals and going close to adding more on numerous occasions. Alonso, though, believes there is no need for the Spanish camp to become obsessed about his Real Madrid team- mate, and feels the side must defend as a unit and play as they do normally to progress to Sunday's final. "Do you plan anti-Ronaldo? We have nothing planned, we always play with the same idea independently of the rival," Alonso told Goal.com. "We can analyse and make small adjustments. The best way to stop players is by being together and leaving no spaces." Team-mates Sergi ...
At the back, Glen Johnson made several blocks as England kept the Azzurri out, while Pepe was dominant in defence for Portugal, not even allowing the Czechs a shot on target. Mats Hummels was solid in Germany's 4-2 victory over Greece, while Jordi Alba produced an inspired display in both attack and defence as Spain dominated France. Xabi Alonso marked his 100th cap with a superb brace to send La Roja into the semi-finals. Andrea Pirlo proved to be Italy's heartbeat once again, controlling the game against England, and then chipped home a cheeky penalty in the shoot-out. Another of Germany's top performers was Sami Khedira, who was inspirational against the Greeks, lashing home a thunderous volley. Marco Reus and Miroslav Klose combined to devastating effect, both scoring fine goals in Germany's triumph. Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo was the hero for Portugal once again, sending his side into the last four with a thumping header.
