Perhaps the big bone of contention is that there is no Wayne Rooney, despite some fine displays from the Manchester United striker this season. Recent form also points to the likes of Sergio Aguero, Alexis Sanchez and David De Gea coming higher in this list. 1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) 2. Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) 3. Lionel Messi (Barcelon ...

Aguero has also hit the ground running this term, scoring 17 goals in 19 appearances. Rooney, meanwhile, was a rare bright spot under David Moyes, and has impressed under Louis Van Gaal, having scored his first ever World Cup goal for England at the World Cup. Costa will also fancy his chances of inclusion, with his goals last season propelling Atletico Madrid to the Champions League final, and his start under Jose Mourinho cementing his position as one of the finest strikers in world football. The Brazil-born Spain international has hit ...

Real Madrid star should reject Man United in favour of Arsenal. Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata would be the main man at Arsenal, but only a supporting act at United. United & Arsenal could fight for Morata. This season aside, there’s not many things Arsenal can claim to have done better than Manchester United in the last few years. Offering plenty of first team experience to young stars looking to make a name for themselves in the game would be one. Whilst United can lay claim to having honed the skills of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, it’s their north London rivals and more specifically their long serving coach Arsene Wenger who are synonymous with taking an impressive young player, putting them in the Emirates machine and churning out a burgeoning superstar. It’s for this reason, amongst others such as Champions League football and a higher domestic finish, that the Gunners will surely have the upper hand when it comes to enticing starlets this summer. Cristiano Ronaldo is pulling out all the stops to convince Wayne Rooney to join him at Real Madrid

Around 16 staff are due in Manchester to deliver their reports on potential targets as manager David Moyes goes over the standard required. Moyes wants five or six players in the summer and still remains hopeful of signing one or two this window. Don't Blame David Moyes, Manchester United's Crisis Has Been Years in the Making In the summer of 2009, Manchester United had the chance to create a dynasty. They had just won the league for the third year in a row, and reached their second Champions League final in succession. A team of kids had taken Everton to penalties in the FA Cup semi-final, demonstrating the depth of talent percolating the senior squad. Sure, they had been well beaten in the Champions League final by Barcelona, and sold Cristiano Ronaldo days later. But Sir Alex Ferguson still had a core of world-class players in Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand. The £80m he received for Ronaldo, coupled with the huge sums being generated through TV and gate receipts, could have funded four or five marquee signings, to address any weaknesses in the squad and establish United as Europe's premier club for years. What happened? Ferguson replaced Ronaldo with Antonio Valencia, which is a bit like replacing a Ferrari with a Volkswagen Pol ...

Manchester United new boss David Moyes wants to start his reign at Old Trafford in spectacular style. It is said that he was given a green light by his bosses to spend big in the transfer window and says he is going to fight hard to either bring Cristiano Ronaldo or Gareth Bale to the Theatre of Dreams and bringing one of the two will depend on how Wayne Rooney decides his future. If Wayne Rooney decides to leave Utd, he may be given to Real Madrid plus some cash for Ronaldo. And if he decides to stay, Moyes is determined to spend big to price away Tottenham hitman Bale. /

The British media wrote when the deal actually materialize, then it will be the biggest transfer story this summer. Even after leaving the Red Devils to the Real Madrid since 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo is still a popular figure at Old Trafford. United fans are still cheering even the name of the player who scored 118 goals during his six seasons as the Red costumed Manchester when the Red Devils meet the Los Blancos in the Champions League last 16 last season. Paper Round: Rooney-Ronaldo in £90m swap? Another fallow day of football news means the papers are content to speculate about a number of reliable favourites on Sunday morning, with Wayne Rooney stage centre once more. Perhaps the most eye catching back page is that of the Daily Star Sunday, which proclaims ‘£90m Roo Ron Swop’. Quite aside from the paper’s rather bizarre usage of ‘swop’ rather than ‘swap’, the Star captures the attention with the claim that Manchester United might consider using Wayne Rooney as a makeweight in a deal for Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. However, their story appears to be based mostly on the fact that the bookies have slashed odds on Rooney moving to Real Madrid – which could be indicative of movement behind the scenes. As the paper writes: “Bookies William Hill have dramatically slashed the odds on Rooney joining the Spanish giants as a betting frenzy grips Britain. Wazza went from 33-1 to 6-1 overnight to join Real as punters heaped cash on the United s ...

A round-up of Transfer News relating to Manchester United, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and David Moyes’ war chest. There may not be too many players linked with Manchester United this morning, but the one that has been is generating a considerable amount of headlines. Having dismissed reports that he had agreed new terms with current club Real Madrid, the odds Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford are tumbling quicker than he had a habit of doing in his first season in England. And it is now being reported that Sir Alex Ferguson’s role as director may help persuade the forward to return. Other reports cite “emotional ties” as the reason the 28-year-old may decide on a reunion with his one-time teammates. Unlikely to match the financial clout of PSG and Monaco – both said to be interested – United will hope Ronaldo’s memories of his time in Manchester will sway him. Having spoken on many occasions as to how much he owes the club for the player he became, we may soon see ex ...

Bloomberg Sports today revealed their list of Europe’s top 50 footballers based off position-specific statistics. Though some of the rankings were to be expected, like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo claiming the first and second spots, other results were a bit surprising. Colombian striker Radamel Falcao who has just completed a monster move to AS Monaco, comes in at number 30, one spot behind Aston Villa and Belgium frontman Christian Benteke. The English Premier League’s highest ranking player is Manchester United’s Robin Van Persie who comes in at sixth whileEngland only managed to produce two players – Leighton Baines (16) and Wayne Rooney (26) on the entire list. The only other British player, Gareth Bale, comes in at number nine. The list was made public on the back-end of England’s torrid display at the U21 European Championships where they weren’t even able to obtain a single point in the tournament. Their performance, as well as Bloomberg’s list, will certainly fuel the debate f ...
Manchester United | Season: 2007/08 Honours: Premier League, Champions League, Community Shield This Manchester United side was arguably the most dominant in Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure. United's treble-winning side of 1999 had perseverance, skill and some luck, but this side didn't need any luck as they were dominant in each area of the pitch. Cristiano Ronaldo was the standout performer that year, scoring 42 goals and taking away all the individual awards. This side had Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Ronaldo in attack, the reliable Nemanja Vidic-Rio Ferdinand partnership and a composed Michael Carrick in midfield. They would have gone all the way and won the treble but were unfortunately knocked out of the FA Cup in the round of 16. 4.
Over the course of the last few years, and especially when Carlos Queiroz was Sir Alex’s assistant, Ferguson has been tinkering with several tactical systems, mainly 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1 and 4-3-3. All of them have been proven to be useful under certain circumstances, but the most fruitful system for Manchester United still is the British standard 4-4-2, including two wide players. Throughout the winning Premier League 2006/07 season, United played the most exciting football that we’ve witnessed for a decade. With Edwin Van Der Sar in goal, and a solid defense made of Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidić, Patrice Evra, the midfielders Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were able of provide with plenty of fine passes and crosses to Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha, who consolidated a terrific attacking partnership. The likes of Ronaldo (by then plying his trade as a pure winger) and Giggs turned out to be crucial in that successful season. Both tormented opponent defenses by ru ...

Who they have signed already: None Who they have lost already: None What they need: Centre-back, winger, striker Who they might lose: Wayne Rooney, Luis Nani, Anders Lindegaard Who they might get: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund), Alen Halilovic (Dinamo Zagreb), Garay (Benfica), Paulinho (Corinthians), Leighton Baines (Everton)
It is all change at Old Trafford. Manchester United will begin next season without the services of Paul Scholes, arguably the finest British footballer of his generation, and Sir Alex Ferguson, inarguably the finest manager. Many fans are not old enough to recall a time before Ferguson, and David Moyes will have his work cut out if he wishes to emulate the near-constant level of success seen under his predecessor. With Manchester City and Chelsea likely to pose a far greater threat under new new managers, reinforcements will be essential for United. Although Ferguson has experimented with Phil Jones and Wayne Rooney in the middle of the pitch, a bona-fide central midfielder is still the No. 1 priority. Particularly given it seems increasingly likely that Rooney will not be around for much longer. United have forward men of genuine quality, a fine goalkeeper and, with the exception of left-back, real strength in depth at the back. Assuming the money is unavailable to lure Cristiano Ronaldo or recruit Garet ...
Amidst an uncertain climate, exacerbated by the Glazer purchase of Manchester United in 2005 – incredibly, it turned out using a loan the Americans had secured against the very assets of the club itself – Ferguson once again pressed the reset button on his team. The likes of Keane, Veron, and Van Nistelrooy along with a host of squad players brought in to replace a golden generation but who plainly weren’t up to the job, all made their way to the Old Trafford exits amid little ceremony. In their place arose a new generation, led by one Cristiano Ronaldo, bought for half the total recouped from the Beckham sale in the summer of 2003. Having by 2006, and at the age of only 21, grown into a true global superstar, the team now impressively featured Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, and Edwin Van Der Sar in its ranks. Playing a brand of football not seen since the three consecutive titles, a largely young and all hungry squad of players who – apart form Giggs and Scholes – ...
