Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger Regrets Not Signing Cristiano Ronaldo Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that failing to sign Cristiano Ronaldo is the biggest regret of his career. The Gunners were interested in Ronaldo in 2003, but they missed out on the Portuguese goal machine, who signed for Premier League rivals Manchester United. Ronaldo went on to become one of United's finest ever players, netting 117 goals in six seasons at Old Trafford, before moving to Real Madrid for £80m in 2009. Wenger told Huawei: "My biggest regret, I was so close to signing Cristiano Ronaldo [from Sporting Lisbon]. "Not only did I not get him, he signed for Manchester United, so that of course still hurts today." Ronaldo, who has scored 166 goals in 151 La Liga appearances for Real, has been strongly linked with a January return to United. Losing Ronaldo to Man United "still hurts today", claims Wenger.

Chelsea Among Premier League Clubs Chasing "New Ronaldo" Chelsea Among Premier League Clubs Chasing "New Ronaldo" Galatasaray winger Bruma is a target for a host of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea. Everton, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke City and West Ham United are also interested, according to the Express. Blues’ boss Jose Mourinho is eager to land Bruma, who has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo in his native Portugal. However, the Special One faces heavy competition from a number of clubs more likely to offer the 19-year-old first-team football immediately. Roberto Martinez wants Bruma to join him at Everton on loan for the season, with a view to a permanent £12million transfer next summer. After Gerard Deulofeu’s successful temporary stay, Martinez would like to bring in a youngster capable of having a similar impact, and believes Bruma to have the abilities to do so. Cristiano Ronaldo made an emotional return to Lisbon on Thursday evening as Real Madrid touched down in Portugal ahead of Saturday's all Spanish Champions League final against Atletico Madrid. The 29-year-old looked relaxed as he chatted with compatriot Pepe after stepping off Real's private plane at Lisbon airport, just 48 hours before Carlo Ancelotti's side take to the pitch at the Estadio da Luz. Ronaldo arrived back in the capital, where he spent six years playing for Sporting Lisbon before moving to Manchester United in 2003, having been assured of a place in Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI against Atletico.
Bento names his 23, omits Quaresma - Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo headlines Portugal's 23-man squad named on Monday for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ with veteran striker Ricardo Quaresma overlooked. Coach Paulo Bento slimmed down the original 30-man squad named last Tuesday with FC Porto's Quaresma, 30, who had been expected to make his return to the national side, failing to make the cut. Also dropped were Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, defenders Antunes and Rolando, midfielders Andre Gomes and Joao Mario and striker Ivan Cavaleiro. All those named have already played for Portugal with the least experienced being Braga striker Rafa, who has just one cap, followed by Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho and Benfica defender Andre Almeida, who have two each. More from Moggi's book: agreed a fee with Sporting Lisbon for Cristiano Ronaldo, deal fell through when Marcelo Salas refused to join Lisbon
The story about Queens Park Rangers turning down Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was 16 made me smile but he is not the only high-profile player who has made a club curse their judgment. Here are some of the best. 1 Yaya Toure (to Arsenal): Arsene Wenger would do anything to have a player like Toure in his midfield and he could have had him had it not been for a passport problem in 2003. Rather than following his older brother Kolo to Highbury, he went to Donetsk. 2 Cristiano Ronaldo (to Liverpool): How different would the Premier League have been had Ronaldo ended up at Anfield rather than Old Trafford? Liverpool were serious about buying him from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 but they felt his fee and wages were too high for an 18-year-old. 3 Zinedine Zidane (to Blackburn): What we would have done to have Zidane in the Premier League — it might have happened in 1995, too when he was at Bordeaux. He was offered to Blackburn but they were content with having Tim Sherwood(Now spurs manager) 4 Ruud Gullit (to Everto ...

Rio Ferdinand via FB : "Cristiano Ronaldo - what can I say… incredible achievement, proud of you bro. Cristiano is living proof that no matter how much talent you have as a youngster, you have to work hard in order to be successful. My first memory of Cristiano was in a pre-season friendly against Sporting Lisbon. After the game, the lads were raving about him, trying to convince Sir Alex and Carlos Queiroz to sign him up. Never had I seen a more mesmerising performance from a youngster than I did that day, he amazed us all. A few days later, he was a United player. When I first met Ronnie at Carrington, he came across as a really determined lad - a rough diamond who was prepared to work as hard as he could in order to fulfill his potential. Thousands of hours of graft both in the gym and on the training ground turned him into the perfect specimen. I’m still truly astonished by the drive and determination to stay at the top, by not only Ronaldo, but Messi too. It’s been a joy to witness these two pu ...

Irrepressible Ronaldo reaches new levels of brilliance By Graham Hunter After a vote of ESPN FC’s editorial team and readers, Cristiano Ronaldo is the winner of our "2013 belonged to..." award. The Portuguese superstar has enjoyed astonishing individual success for club and country over the last 12 months, the highlight of which was a remarkable hat trick against Sweden that clinched World Cup qualification for Portugal. Graham Hunter, who has worked as a journalist in Spain for over decade, charts the rise of Ronaldo, from a precocious teen in his native Portugal to a footballing megastar for whom 2013 was simply the next step on the road to legendary status. From the very first time I heard his name, it has always surprised me how people often tend to react to Cristiano Ronaldo. It was August 2002, just as he was on the verge of his first-team debut at Sporting Lisbon, when I first learned about this phenomenon. Colin Hutchinson had been, for years, the managing director at Chelsea, and we struck up a ...

Cristiano Ronaldo is tipped to win the Ballon d'Or after his hat-trick helps Portugal beat Sweden to reach the World Cup. The Real Madrid attacker produced the latest in series of stunning performances as he won his personal duel with Sweden's Zlatan Ibrahimovich to help portugal reach the 2014 WC. The 28-year-old forward scored his fifth hat-trick of the season in the play-off second leg as Portugal won 3-2 in Solna - despite Ibrahimovic's double - to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory. Ronaldo also struck the only goal in the first leg, with those four efforts in the tie prompting a host of former & current players to suggest the ex-Sporting Lisbon forward should win this year's Ballon d'Or, which is awarded to the best player in the world. His latest performance could help his chances of winning the award because Fifa, world football's governing body, extended the voting period from 15 November to 29 November after receiving a response of less than 50% from eligible voters before the original deadline. I juz felt Cristiano Ronaldo deserves better recognition. I think he's way better & consistent than Messi. But yet, Messi's e one who's collecting e awards. Let me ask this.. where did Messi start? A youth with Barcelona up till present? One man club? Wat about Ronaldo? A youth from Sporting Lisbon, built his name @ Man Utd, & flies to Real Madrid. And still he performs consistently. Try putting Messi @ other clubs. Do u think he'll b performing lyke hw he performed for Barca? I doubt so. Messi juz happens to b in a great club with great players. Juz take Neymar for an example. Controls e Brazilian League lyke a boss with his mesmerizing display of flair & tricks & goals. But when he arrives @ Barca, is he e top scorer? Only when he 'performs' on certain matches that he'll b recognised. Other than dat, nah! And juz recently, Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Sweden to save Portugal & bring them to e World Cup. Wat more can any1 ask for? Playing well for club & country is hard to come by. Well for me, Cri ...
Cristiano Ronaldo Biography Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese footballer who currently plays for Real Madrid in Spain and represents Portugal at national level as the team's captain. Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, commonly known as Cristiano Ronaldo, was born on the 5th of February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira (Portugal). He began his professional career with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal but his talent was soon recognised by many of Europe's elite clubs all wanting to capture his signature. As a junior, Ronaldo played for Andorinha for two years and soon made a move to more competitive football when he was snapped up by CD Nacional. In 1997, his move to a much higher level was confirmed when Sporting Lisbon captured his signature. His progression with the Portuguese team was rapid and in 2003, Ronaldo's rise to fame was meteoric. Sporting were opening a new stadium and to mark the event, hosted Manchester United in a friendly match. The players of Manchester United were reportedly so impressed by Cristia ...

Cristiano Ronaldo is the son of Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro (a cooker) and José Dinis Aveiro (a Municipal gardener). Many say that Ronaldo's humble family origins are the reason why CR7 manages to deal so well with the fame and spotlights he has nowadays. Cristiano Ronaldo has two older sisters, Liliana Cátia and Elma, and one older brother, Hugo. Cristiano Ronaldo first steps in football/soccer were made in his amateur hometown club called Andorinha, when he was still 8 years old. A couple years later, CR7 moved to CD Nacional, one of the most known teams in Madeira, around his 10th birthday. But he didn't stay there for too long and the year after (1996), Ronaldo was persuaded to join Sporting Lisbon, one of the biggest clubs in Portugal. It's now clear that 1996 was a turnaround year in Cristiano Ronaldo life. By joining Sporting CP, Ronaldo had to leave his family back in Madeira and start learning how to live on his own. CR7 trained with the youth team in the first years and in 2002, by the age ...
talkSPORT's Spanish football expert, Graham Hunter, claims Cristiano Ronaldo has told the Real Madrid management that he will not renew his contract at the La Liga side. Manchester United are heavily interested in bringing the Portuguese star back to Old Trafford and are expected to launch a summer raid for the 27-year-old. But Hunter told talkSPORT, that while the former Sporting Lisbon man will leave the Bernabeu, it might not be until the end of next season, when Ronaldo will have just one-year left on his deal.
Rio Ferdinand has told top transfer targets Cesc Fabregas and Robert Lewandowski they will become better players if they sign for Manchester United Former England defender Ferdinand said there is no better place to be as an ambitious footballer, mentioning Cristiano Ronaldo as an example of success. Fabregas, 26, and Lewandowski, 24, are both thought to be on United’s wishlist this summer, as David Moyes aims to successfully defend their Premier League crown. ‘If United come in for you, you take it.,’ Ferdinand, 34, told The Sun. ‘Even if you are a great player you become a better one at this club. Cristiano Ronaldo became the best player in the world having come from Sporting Lisbon. ‘The likes of Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Andy Cole all became great players at United. With this platform you cannot believe anyone would ever turn it down. 'If you have ambition your aim has to be to make a name foryourself at a top club. As a player aged between say 23 and 27 that is what you should be ...
From Eric Cantona to Eric Djemba-Djemba, we take a look at Sir Alex Ferguson’s best and worst signings as Manchester United boss. Ferguson was a keen promoter of home-grown talent but his incredible collection of silverware would not have been possible without some stunning transfer coups for Manchester United. Beginning with Eric Cantona and ending with Robin Van Persie, Ferguson has usually spent money wisely at Old Trafford, although there have been some famous flops... BEST 1. Eric Cantona (£1.2m) Signed from bitter rivals Leeds United for just £1.2 million in 1992, the feisty French maverick was influential in United winning the title a year later. Kung-fu exploits aside, the charismatic Cantona went on to win three more titles and remains a true United icon. 2. Cristiano Ronaldo (£12m) When Ferguson signed Ronaldo for £12m from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 to replace David Beckham, many questioned his judgement but the Scot moulded him from a flashy winger into a prolific goalscorer who netted 42 t ...

Yesterday's El Classico between Real Madrid and Barcelona has once again refreshed the question who the best player be between Messi and Ronaldo; and the best club between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Lionel Messi is the current world best player but his performances over the part days are questionable as he fired blank when he was needed most against AC Milan and Real Madrid. Real Madrid humbled Barcelona 3-1 at their backyard just days after Dani Alves had claimed that he would not sign any Madrid player were he were he was a coach. Cristiano Ronaldo has shown the world the stuff he is made of from Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United to now in Real Madrid. Lionel Messi have not tested another league or club in his career, staying in one club breaking goal-scoring records. In the Premier League, which payer has scored 70 goals a season? Ronaldo held a record 42 in all competition before he left for Madrid. That show you how competitive the EPL is. The history of El Classico is one that have favoured Real ...
MAN-United In STUNNING £55m SUMMER BID FOR FORMER STRIKER-CRISTIANO RONALDO According to the Daily Star, Manchester United is preparing a big money move to re-sign their former forward, Cristiano Ronaldo this summer. Ronaldo’s future at the Bernabeu has been shrouded in uncertainty with speculation that Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez has lost his patience on his most prized asset and is ready to listen to offers after it emerged that he refused to sign a new longer term contract. The 28 year old is also reportedly unhappy with life at Real Madrid and with Jose Mourinho certain to leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season, the Old Trafford side may feel they can tempt the Portuguese goal machine back to the club that made him such a delight today – and they hope to achieve that feat with a stunning package worth £55 million. The former Sporting Lisbon man spent six seasons at Manchester United, racking up a total 118 goals in 292 appearances and winning three Premier League titles and the ...
Liverpool signed Joao Teixeira one year ago, so how is he getting on at Anfield? Joao Teixeira showed 18 months ago how easy it can be to clinch a move to Liverpool - score a goal at the Kop and impress the club enough to part with their cash. He did just that for Sporting Lisbon's NextGen Series side in late 2011, that the Reds were persuaded to shell out £1 million for his signature, in a way reminiscent of how Cristiano Ronaldo's friendly performance for the same club against Manchester United accelerated his move to Old Trafford. While comparisons to Ronaldo would obviously be unfair, Teixeira has had to deal with the label of the 'next Deco' - hoisted upon him before he even moved to the Reds. Teixeira's signature is notable for one particular reason - he was the last player brought to the club while Kenny Dalglish and Damien Commoli were presiding over team affairs. And unlike Coutinho's dream start in a Liverpool first team shirt, Teixeira has had to and will have to continue to bide his time. Aft ...
Cristiano Ronaldo : Discovered by Sporting Lisbon . Created by Man United . Developped by Real Madrid . Destroyed by Messi .
Man United have created Ronaldo , they can definately control him . Here's a story on him : Gary Neville was at home, on the sofa, in the summer of 2003 when he witnessed it. He'd not travelled to Lisbon for the friendly between Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon which commemorated the inauguration of the Alvalade XXI Stadium, so for him it was his club's in-house TV station which provided the view of the run by the left-winger wearing the No 28 on his back. Within minutes of the game's conclusion, Neville was texting his brother Phil, in the sanctuary of the United dressing room, about Cristiano Ronaldo. "It was in the first half when he made the run, inside John O'Shea," Neville recalls. "And I thought 'bloody *** . When you're watching a player who you would usually play against, you look much more closely and it's very rare to see that level of movement and speed. Only a few people are capable of timing a run like that, inside the full-back and centre back – and the speed of it." Of course, that ...
Emotions might get to Ronaldo - Neville 12 Feb 2013 13:20:52 Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo could find Wednesday's Champions League clash against his old club Manchester United "too emotional", former teammate Gary Neville believes. The last-16 first-leg clash in the Bernabeu will pit the Portuguese goal-machine up against United for the first time since leaving for a world record fee of £80 million in 2009. Ronaldo has fully justified that huge fee, scoring 182 goals in 179 appearances for the Spanish giants and a hat-trick against Sevilla at the weekend underlined the danger he poses to United's hopes of progress. Yet Neville, who watched Ronaldo develop into one of the world's leading players at Old Trafford after he joined from Sporting Lisbon, thinks the flamboyant 28-year-old could try to hard to impress. "I always think there's a weakness in everybody," former United defender Neville, now working as a Sky Sports analyst and as part of England's coaching set-up, said in the Daily Telegraph o ...
Man Utd legend Neville declares Real Madrid star Ronaldo a "MONSTER" Manchester United legend Gary Neville has declared Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo a "monster". Ronaldo will be the centre-piece of Neville's week, having known since he watched the then raw teenager playing for Sporting Lisbon against United in a friendly 10 years ago he was a rare talent. "I watched that game at home and texted my brother afterwards saying 'we have to sign him'," said Neville. "He did certain things that night which were exceptional. When Ronaldo came to United he was physically underdeveloped. He had to cope with moving away from home and learning another language. "But he had the right people around himand a manager who allowed him to flourish." Nevertheless, Ronaldo was a frustrating presence in the United squad - until his return from the 2006 World Cup that is. "He was a completely different person," said Neville. "He had gone from a featherweight, making the wrong decisions in the last third of the pitch, toa ...

If Barcelona were a just bit wealthier ten years ago, Real Madrid’s hero, Cristiano Ronaldo, could’ve well been playing for them, says the Catalan side’s former president, Joan Laporta. “Barcelona was offered Ronaldo’s transfer when he was still a Sporting player,” Laporta is cited as saying by Sport-Express newspaper. “We could’ve signed him back than, paying less than Man United actually did. But at that time we had just acquired Ronaldinho, Ricardo Quaresma and Rafael Marques and we just did not have the financial resources to sign Cristiano Ronaldo as well.” Ronaldo moved to Manchester United from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon for €17.5 million in 2003. Six years later, he left England for Real Madrid, scoring an impressive 130 goals in 120 appearances for the team from the Spanish capital. The rivalry of Real and Barcelona as well as the team’s captains Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is considered the biggest not only in Spain, but in the whole of football.
Winger Jerome Thomas is yet to discover if West Brom want to keep him when his contract runs out this summer. Thomas has regained a first-team spot in recent games after returning from a loan spell at Leeds. He says: "I did exactly what I was asked to do by the staff here, which was to go out on loan, get fit and perform well. But as for the future, we've had no discussions with the manager or hierarchy." Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta tells Marca he passed up the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. According to Laporta, Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes offered Ronaldo while he was still playing for Sporting Lisbon for a lower figure than Manchester United eventually paid, but the Catalans were still unable to meet the price. Tottenham are checking out Hamburg striker Heung-Min Son, 20, who would cost around £10m, reports the Enfield Independent. Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner is looking for defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window, after defender Jermaine Grandison, 22, wa ...
The difference is:Leonel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are widely regarded as the best players in the world David Ramos & Massimo Cebrelli / Getty Images When Barcelona meet Real Madrid the biggestsubplot is the battle of Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo . Ronaldo is the world’s most expensive player, Real having signed him for $131 in the summer of 2009. Prior to that he had been signed by Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon as an 18-year-old. They are two of the highest paid soccer players in the world game. Messi has a release clause of $400 million andhis rise to the top could not contrast more starkly to that of Ronaldo. The Argentinean left Newell’s Old Boys for Barcelona at the age of 13, with the club paying for treatmenton a growth hormone deficiency that threatened to stunt his progress. In 2012 he became the club's record goalscorer at the age of just 24. Each player has won the World Player of the Year award, and has scored in a Champions League final. Yes or no ? RS Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign former Chelsea winger Ricardo Quaresma, according to reports in Spain. The Portugal international, who was part of his country's squad at Euro 2012, first came to prominence at Sporting Lisbon and earned a move to Barcelona. And now his agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, has offered the tricky winger to Liverpool, as well as to Valencia and Marseille. SOURCE: talkSPORT This is of course not the first time Liverpool have been linked with apparent interest in Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma, more like the 101st, but perhaps now is the time for Brendan Rodgers to consider the possibility of bringing in the 29 year old free agent. The Former Barcelona man could well add some know how to Liverpool's flanks, where Rodgers has opted to use teenagers Suso and Raheem Sterling frequently. The signing of Daniel Sturridge does of course help in this regard but the England international, who Liverpool signed yest ...
HE WILL FACE HIS FORMER TEAMMATES, AND FERGUSON ! No festivities for CR7 if he scores against United the Champions League draw threw up a Real Madrid-Manchester United clash, Cristiano Ronaldo began thinking about what it will be like to return to Old Trafford, similar to what he experienced in 2007 when he returned to the Alvalade Stadium to take on Sporting with United. One thing is clear: if CR7 scores against his former team, he will not celebrate – just like he did not celebrate when he scored Manchester United's winning goal against Sporting Lisbon. The same will apply at Old Trafford. Ronaldo will meet many of his former teammates and also one of the most important figures in his career: Sir Alex Ferguson – the pair remain in constant contact and share a mutual admiration. It will be a special night for Ronaldo. He will return to the place where he came of age and is still loved by the fans. The Portuguese striker is preparing himself for one of the most emotional moments of his career, when h ...
Liverpool were linked with signing Ricardo Quaresma back in September, now he is a free agent, should the Reds try to sign the winger who had a brief spell in England with Chelsea? Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma was part of the same highly rated Sporting Lisbon side in 2002-03 as Cristiano Ronaldo which had clubs racing to sign the pair from across Europe. Both clinched big moves, but while Ronaldo is challenging for the coveted Ballon d'Or, former teammate Ricardo Quaresma finds himself without a club. Quaresma signed for Barcelona, but poor form and injury meant he lasted just one season in Spain before a disagreement with coach Frank Rijkaard saw him head back to Portugal with Porto. He spent four seasons with Porto before heading to Inter Milan, and then on loan to Chelsea, where he failed to make an impression, playing only four times. He has just been released from his contract with Besiktas in Turkey, where he has endured a two-and-a-half season nightmare. His spell there saw him involved in a ...

THREE Australasian Soccer Academy players are in Portugal being trialled with one of the world's biggest football academies. Alusine Fofanah, of Guildford, Liam Youlley, of Parramatta, and Anthony Frangie, of Ermington, all under-15s, are on trial with Sporting Lisbon. ASA director Tony Basha said the trio were the first Australians to train with the academy. "The three were spotted training in England during our three-week tour," Mr Basha said. "The boys believe the Sporting Lisbon players are the best they have ever seen, after training with Manchester City, Bury FC and Sheffield United." The players have praised the academy that helped produce stars like Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United's Nani, and the retired Portugal legend Luis Figo. Basha said it was a whole new world for the players. "They have excellent facilities and their training is different to ours," he said. "I have toured the world to see different styles to bring back to help the kids in the western suburbs. "We have so ...
Cristiano Ronaldo to Liverpool. A transfer that could have been. Gerard Houllier has claimed that he was the first to spot the talent of Cristiano Ronaldo much before his transfer to Manchester United. Houllier was keen to sign the raw Portuguese talent after seeing him at the Toulon under-21 tournament. Liverpool’s wage structure at the time couldn’t be broken for someone so relatively unproven and they couldn’t be tempted to budge the structure as it could cause disharmony in the dressing room. Instead, Manchester United swooped and signed him after playing against Sporting Lisbon during a tour of the United States in pre-season. United then went on to sell Ronaldo for a sweet £65m+ profit. Not bad at all. Just for a moment, imagine if Liverpool had signed Cristiano Ronaldo.
