As Wayne Rooney celebrates a decade with the club, the striker claims that Roy Keane was the best passer he played with over this successful period. Rooney has been fortunate to play in the same Manchester United team as some of the greats of the modern era, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes among them, yet it was his understanding with Keane that he deemed most fruitful. “With Roy, I knew he was a great footballer but until I played with him didn’t realise how great. His passing was probably the best I’ve played with, in terms of getting it in to the forwards’ feet. “I had associated him with someone who got round the pitch, making tackles, but it was his passing that blew me away.” [Source: The Times]

After a busy summer transfer window and the release of all squad numbers for the 2014/15 season, Manchester United have new incumbents of several red shirts. Among them, loan signing Radamel Falcao will wear no.9, record capture Angel Di Maria has taken no.7 and Belgian starlet Adnan Januzaj is the club’s new no.11. All three will hope to live up to the reputation of some bona fide United legends to have worn those numbers down the years. No.7 is the most iconic of all jerseys at Old Trafford, having been donned by some of the team’s all-time greats, including George Best (who could legitimately lay claim to no.11 as well), Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. Those five have a combined 1,802 appearances and 563 goals. Sir Bobby Charlton is probably our most famous no.9 and he wore the number for most of his epic, 758-game Reds career. More recently, Andy Cole plundered over a century of goals in the shirt as he helped United win the Treble in 1998/99. Ryan Giggs made the n ...

In 07/08, we had Cristiano Ronaldo & Luis Nani. We won the Champions League because of these wingers

Should the move go through, Shaw would become one of the most expensive teenagers in history, the current best-paid youngster on the planet and the second most expensive full-back behind Barcelona's Dani Alves. Manchester City and Chelsea have both expressed an interest in Shaw but both clubs will have to rein in their spending in light of Uefa's Financial Fair Play regualations. Manchester United have a recent tradition of spending big on young talent, having splashed out on Wayne Rooney - the most expensive teenager ever - Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, David De Gea, Wilfried Zaha, Anderson and Cristiano Ronaldo since 2003. In October they handed Adnan Januzaj a bumper five-year contract, including a huge signing-on fee, with his agent recently bragging that the young Belgian earns more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi did at the same age . The club are set to name Louis Van Gaal as David Moyes' permanent successor this week, with Ryan Giggs vacating his caretaker role after four matches at the helm ...

More than 23 years since he made his first-team debut, Manchester United’s greatest ever player is likely to be entering his final month at Old Trafford. After featuring in 962 competitive first-team games (with friendlies it’s well over 1,000), Ryan Giggs, 40, is out of contract at the end of the season. Sir Bobby Charlton’s 758-game appearance record for Manchester United was long considered insurmountable but Giggs passed that mark more than five years ago in Moscow, when he won his second European Cup with United. Giggs has played 190 more games than the combined appearance total of United legends Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nemanja Vidic. Cantona was more decisive during his time at Old Trafford, while George Best might have been a more talented footballer and Denis Law the “King of the Stretford End,” but Giggs has had many moments that will likely be highlighted when he hangs up his boots. A home-drawn “Giggs ties Forest in Notts” flag at the 1992 League Cup final, for example ...
Copied! What if footballers gave an exam ?? Let’s see what they have to say- Lionel Messi - I came first, again. But I must confess that I cheated from Xavi and Iniesta. Cristiano Ronaldo - I came second, again. I might have done well if I had not wasted my time in the bathroom fixing my hairstyle. Fernando Torres - Sadly, I missed the test. Carles Puyol - I wasn’t able to attend the exambecause I got injured a day before. John Terry - I passed, but wasn’t that invigilator hot? Ryan Giggs - I was too old to give the exam. Neymar - I was too young to give the exam. Zlatan Ibrahimovic - Zlatan doesn’t give exams. Sheikh Mansour Ali - I bought the school. Roman Abramovich - I did ok, but could have done better if I hadn’t changed my tuition teacher 10 times. Sir Alex Ferguson – I was busy chewing gum. Jose Mourinho - I don’t give exams because I am the special one. Xavi -I was busy showing my answers to Messi. Sergio Ramos - I think my talent was ‘too high’ to give an exam. Robin Van Persie ...

Manchester United is a highly successful English football club, with millions of supporters across the world. Its current players include Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie, and among its former players are Bobby Charlton, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. Manchester United is presently managed by David Moyes, appointed to follow Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in English football. Manchester United was one of the first English clubs to play in Europe (1956) and the first to win the European Cup (1968). Returning from a European tie in 1958, Manchester United lost eight players and various club officials in the Munich air disaster. Manchester United is the only English club to have won the Premiership, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in the same season (1998-1999), and most recently won the Premier League title in 2012-2013.
Read about Ryan Giggs' take on Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Adnan Januzaj here:
Phil Jones can give Manchester United a midfield presence that's been missing since the days of Roy Keane Our man in Manchester, David McDonnell, on why United's Mr. Versatility is can make the defensive midfielder position his own at Old Trafford Midfield general: Phil Jones excelled in the middle of the park against Arsenal When Sir Alex Ferguson, towards the end of his Manchester United reign last season, claimed Phil Jones could become the club's greatest-ever player , there was much sniggering and rolling of eyes. Set against such iconic names as Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best, Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo, and their laudable achievements, it seemed absurd to entertain the notion that Jones could even be mentioned in the same breath. Although a competent, diligent and hard-working player, Jones lacks the flair and bewitching qualities of those more illustrious names that have pulled on the famous United shirt in the past and captivated fans all over the world. As such, Ferguson may ...
Lionel Messi has a gene that makes him more creative and inventive out on the pitch than Cristiano Ronaldo. This is the conclusion reached in a study conducted by the universities of Oxford, St Andrews and Bristol, in conjunction with several Australian institutions. The research shows that left-footed footballers have the edge over their right-footed counterparts. Players who favour their left foot have inverted brain hemisphere functions, which gives them an extra dose of unpredictability. The wizardry of the likes of David Silva, Leo Messi, Gareth Bale, Diego Maradona and Ryan Giggs, amongst many others, would appear to back up this theory.
Manchester United fans of a certain age will remember exactly how they felt when they first laid eyes on a fresh-faced Ryan Giggs during his league debut against Evertonway back in 1991. Twelve years later, those memories were evoked when Cristiano Ronaldo came on for his firstappearance for the Red Devils against Bolton. A decade on, Adnan Januzaj stepped off the conveyor belt to take his step into the limelight.Though he wore the No.44 shirt, there is now a sense at Old Trafford that 18-year-old product of the Anderlecht acadamy, who joinedfor €350,000 in 2011, could go on to become another in the line of United's great No.7.
Rio Ferdinand has told top transfer targets Cesc Fabregas and Robert Lewandowski they will become better players if they sign for Manchester United Former England defender Ferdinand said there is no better place to be as an ambitious footballer, mentioning Cristiano Ronaldo as an example of success. Fabregas, 26, and Lewandowski, 24, are both thought to be on United’s wishlist this summer, as David Moyes aims to successfully defend their Premier League crown. ‘If United come in for you, you take it.,’ Ferdinand, 34, told The Sun. ‘Even if you are a great player you become a better one at this club. Cristiano Ronaldo became the best player in the world having come from Sporting Lisbon. ‘The likes of Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, David Beckham, Andy Cole all became great players at United. With this platform you cannot believe anyone would ever turn it down. 'If you have ambition your aim has to be to make a name foryourself at a top club. As a player aged between say 23 and 27 that is what you should be ...
Over the course of the last few years, and especially when Carlos Queiroz was Sir Alex’s assistant, Ferguson has been tinkering with several tactical systems, mainly 4-2-3-1, 4-5-1 and 4-3-3. All of them have been proven to be useful under certain circumstances, but the most fruitful system for Manchester United still is the British standard 4-4-2, including two wide players. Throughout the winning Premier League 2006/07 season, United played the most exciting football that we’ve witnessed for a decade. With Edwin Van Der Sar in goal, and a solid defense made of Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidić, Patrice Evra, the midfielders Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs were able of provide with plenty of fine passes and crosses to Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha, who consolidated a terrific attacking partnership. The likes of Ronaldo (by then plying his trade as a pure winger) and Giggs turned out to be crucial in that successful season. Both tormented opponent defenses by ru ...
Ain't no fan of Man Utd or Sir Alex, but got to give credit where credit is due. So, here's wot I think is his best starting XI over the past two and a half decades. Ryan Giggs twists Luka Modric inside out Photograph: Tom Jenkins for the GuardianJamie Jackson at Old TraffordIn a career of fairy tales this was the yarn Ryan Giggs dare not dream. To hope for a start against Real Madrid and make a 1,000th appearance at the age of 39 sounded like the fantasy of a man searching for his marbles. Then Sir Alex Ferguson made it reality and the team-sheets showed the name of the Welshman in the Manchester United XI. As the news reverberated around Old Trafford that Wayne Rooney was dropped – perhaps "the writing is on the wall for Wayne," Roy Keane opined on ITV – Giggs bounded through a pre-game warm-up that had been seen 999 times before. Then came the bombshell. As the contest unfolded the role for Giggs became clear: despite having legs 12 years older than Rooney, he was deemed better equipped to be the second man alongside Rafael da Silva in the quest to stymie Cristiano Ronaldo along the left side. This was the job handed to Rooney three weeks ago at the Bernabéu in t ...
Ronaldo's homecoming puts Wayne Rooney firmly in the shade | Barney Ronay Although the Real Madrid star's return was rather subdued, it highlighted how far he has moved past his former colleague When it came, just before kick-off at Old Trafford, the reception for Cristiano Ronaldo ("Welcome back, No7...") was profound and even rather gentle: warm applause that brought a regal wave from the world's most expensive player even as the game began. Whatever the reason – and much has been made of the potentially neutering effects of a concerted dewey-eyed welcome – for the first hour of a brilliantly gripping match that Manchester United would ultimately lose 2-1, exiting the Champions League in the process, Ronaldo seemed to have emerged calibrated several notches below his customary level of extreme menace. Closed down at a sprint by Tom Cleverley and Ryan Giggs whenever he cut inside, and deprived of space in which to gallop and twist by Alex Ferguson's successful suffocation of Real Madrid's great stren ...
Some football facts for you.. Dario Conca (never heard of him) earns more than Messi & Ronaldo! He plies his trade in China with Guangzhou, and earns €10.6 million. This is higher than the €10.5 million Lionel Messi receives and the €10 million that Cristiano Ronaldo earns. However, top of the high earners list is Samuel Eto’o who earns a staggering €20 million at Russian club Anzhi. An English Manager has never won the Premier League. The first winner of Europe’s Football Player of the Year was England’s Sir Stanley Matthews. His nicknames were “The Wizard of the Dribble” and “The Magician.” He played in England’s top division until he was fifty years old! Ryan Giggs is the only player to score in every Premier League season. The first televised football match featured Arsenal vs. Arsenal Reserves. The Championship is the 5th most Lucrative league in Europe. Behind the Premier League, Spanish, German & Italian. In 1954 Turkey knocked out Spain during a World Cup qualifier by drawi ...

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has joked that he may have to play at the Bernabeu more often after he received a rousing reception from the Real Madrid fans LAST WEEK. And, speaking to ESPN after the game, Giggs joked that he might have to play in Madrid more often. Giggs said: "It took me by surprise. It was obviously very good - I'll have to play here more often!" United scored a vital away goal in Madrid, which could be crucial come the return leg at Old Trafford on March 5. Real Madrid and Manchester United leave press with mixed emotions The Champions League clash at the Bernabéu put writers in ebullient mood, with even complaints about the ref at a minimum By Sid Lowe The Guardian, And so to Manchester with mixed emotions. At one end, David De Gea; at the other, Robin Van Persie; and between them a fascinating, shifting match in which so much happened and so much more could have happened. From that karate kick save to Xabi Alonso clearing off the line, a post and a bar, one each, and a standing ovation for Ryan Giggs, described in one Spanish newspaper as "a living legend". A result in which anything can still happen. "It's in the air," ran Marca's cover. The "it" in question is Cristiano Ronaldo – head, shoulders, and waist above Patrice Evra. "It" is the tie, too. Surely it is better this way. Post-game at the Bernabéu, as the fans headed on to the streets, felt a bit like pre-game did: there was still excitement, expectation – this was fun, and there's another one ...
Ryan Giggs says Manchester United will keep pressure on Real Madrid • Veteran hints that United will again defend all over the pitch • 'We have to repeat the performance,' says Phil Jones Ryan Giggs has hinted at how Manchester United may approach the return leg with Real Madrid in three weeks' time by stating the emphasis is on them to "pressure" José Mourinho's side. The last-16 Champions League tie is balanced at 1-1 following Wednesday evening's first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu when Danny Welbeck's opener was cancelled out by Cristiano Ronaldo's equaliser later in the first half. On the away goals rule this means a scoreless draw at Old Trafford would be enough for United to knock the nine-times European champions out of the competition. But Giggs, asked if the tie was still 50-50, said: "Yeah, I think it is. You have got to recognise the quality Real Madrid have got. They won't be fazed by coming to Old Trafford and it is up to us to put pressure on them. The fans will be behind us and we'll ...
Hypocrisy of Manchester United fans: Wayne Rooney: Cheats on his wife with a prostitute. Ryan Giggs: Shags his brothers' wife for 8 years. Cristiano Ronaldo: Had sex with countless women Rio Ferdinand: Cheated on his wife with at least 10 women. Patrice Evra: Dated a playboy model even when his wife is pregnant. And all Manchester Utd fans know is to make fun of John Terry everytime they can. Hypocrisy at it's best
"I missed my penalty and it felt like the worst day of my life. Now it's the happiest day of my life." Cristiano Ronaldo Forty years after their first European Cup triumph, half a century on from the Munich air crash and on the night of Ryan Giggs's club-record 759th appearance, Manchester United FC's evening, as they contested the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final, was so nearly spoiled. After an epic domestic campaign which saw United sneak out on top of perennial Premier League rivals Chelsea FC, this first all-English showpiece delivered its own brand of engaging encounter at a rain-soaked Luzhniki Stadium.United were first to show their hand 26 minutes in, Cristiano Ronaldo dropping off Michael Essien and leaping majestically to head Wes Brown's cross low into the corner for his 42nd club goal of the season.Buoyed by the effervescent Owen Hargreaves and calmed by the composed Paul Scholes, United's goal was first threatened when Rio Ferdinand inadvertently headed that way. Man Utd icon Giggs: Sorry Ron, Messi is No1 Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs rates Barcelona star Lionel Messi ahead of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo will face United for the first time since leaving in 2009 after they were paired with Real Madrid in yesterday’s Champions League last-16 draw. But Giggs has lit the fuse ahead of the mouthwatering clash by insisting it is old rival Messi who is the best around, not Ronaldo. “You have to think Messi,” said Giggs when asked who the greatest ever Champions League player is. “At the moment he is breaking all sorts of records. He is one of the greatest players to ever live and he as won it a couple of times. “I would have to go for Messi. He is a goalscorer – he scores so many goals – but he is a team player as well. “He sets up so many goals for his team-mates and having experience playing against him, he is tough. It is difficult to get the ball off him. "He can dribble, he can score any type of goal, left foot, right foot, heade ...
Got this off EuroSport. Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected claims that Paul Scholes has decided to retire at the end of the season. It was reported on Friday morning that 38-year-old midfielder Scholes has told friends he will be quitting the game for a second time next summer. However Ferguson believes the former England international, who was persuaded to come out of a short-lived retirement at the start of the year, would have let him know of any such plans. Ferguson said: "I would be surprised if Paul had spoken to someone without speaking to me - and he hasn't - so we can dismiss that." There have also been suggestions this could be 39-year-old Ryan Giggs' final season in the game, and that Rio Ferdinand's United future is uncertain. Yet Ferguson said: "Ryan could play for another year or two. Rio has been terrific. The speculation comes from our policy of only giving older players one-year contracts." Ferguson was happy to joke about the prospect of facing Cristiano Ronaldo in the Ch ...

I got this fro the History page. MORE GOALS Manchester United became the first team to have scored 1 000 goals in the league after Cristiano Ronaldo scored in a 4–1 defeat of Middlesbrough in the 2005/06 season. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are the only other teams to have reached the 1 000-goal mark. The highest-scoring match to date in the Premier League occurred on September 29, 2007, when Portsmouth beat Reading 7–4.
