Just finished watching... "Million Dollar Arm" (2014, bio-drama); written by Tom McCarthy; directed by Craig Gillespie; starring Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi), Madhur Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire), Bill Paxton, Lake Bell, ...; music by A.R. Rahman. Plot: Unable to secure any sports talent in the last few years, sports agent J.B. Bernstein is frustrated, and almost on the verge of being financially broke. Then one night while watching "Britain's Got Talent" on TV (47 year old Susan Boyle's audition aired on Saturday, 11th April, 2009) and a cricket match, he comes up with this brilliant idea of "Million Dollar Arm" program. So he comes to India and finds two young talents Rinku and Dinesh... and takes them to the U.S. Though not an extraordinary film, it's an enjoyable film for obvious reasons. Hope you'll like this film too. :)

"The actors fit into their roles perfectly and they all are an absolute delight to watch. Special Mention for Suraj Sharma, Jon Hamm, Alan Arkin & Pitobash & the music is mesmerizing as Rahman is the helmer and his fusion of Indian & the New Age music is kind of cool and fitting..." 09/05/14 Releases : Million Dollar Arm Starring Jon Hamm, Madhur Mittal, Suraj Sharma, Pitobash Tripathy, Lake Bell, Alan Arkin, Bill Paxton, Aasif Mandvi & Darshan Jariwala. Directed by Craig Gillespie
Million Dollar Arm (English): No, this isn't 'Slumdog Millionaire', though it has got some shades of it. Based on true lives of Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh, the famous baseball pitchers, this Disney film has got the heart along with the thrills and chills. The problem with the film is the second half which gets slightly melodramatic, but overall it is a feel-good film added with humour, patriotism, emotions, loaded with brilliant performances by John Hamm, Bill Paxton, Madhur Mittal, Suraj Sharma and especially Tzi Ma, Darshan Jariwala and Pitobash who are riveting, then comes the cinematography by Gyula Pados where the wide shots, the Indian mood and even the game has been beautifully captured, the music score by A. R. Rahman which is narrative complimenting, excellent and somewhat better than 'Slumdog Millionaire' in my view. Overall, director Craig Gillespie's narration in this sporty film is simple, slightly slow in the second half, yet sweet meant for a must watch. My rating would be: 4/5.

Matthew McConaughey is getting well-deserved Oscar buzz for his performance as real life cowboy turned AIDS activist Ron Woodroof in "Dallas Buyer’s Club," But did you know that before McConaughey jumped on board, the film was actually stuck in development *** for over 15 years with various other actors, including Brad Pitt and Woody Harrelson, attached to play the role. Most recently, even Ryan Gosling was set to play Woodroof for his "Lars and the Real Girl" director, Craig Gillespie, but when their film was hit with financial issues, Gosling had to turn the part down to focus on other projects.

It stars Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider, Kelli Garner and Patricia Clarkson. The film follows Lars (Gosling), a sweet yet quirky, socially inept young man, who develops a romantic relationship with an anatomically correct sex doll, a "RealDoll" named Bianca, and the story of how his older brother (Schneider), his brother's wife (Mortimer), and the rest of the small town grow to accept and welcome Bianca into the community for Lars' sake, not realizing that she would touch all of their lives in such a profound way.

Films seen lately: --- * "Micmacs" (2009), by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Deliciously surreal and absurd French film by the same director who also did e.g. "Le Fabuleux Destin D'Amélie Poulain" and "La Cité Des Enfants Perdus". A must-see. * "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011), by Rupert Wyatt, with James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto. Really good CGI, tight directing and interesting script makes this prequel worth watching. * "The Escapist" (2008), also by Rupert Wyatt, with Brian Cox, Damian Lewis and Joseph Fiennes. One of the best "prison break" type of films I've seen in ages, very suspenseful. * "Battleship" (2012), by Peter Berg. Cliched and dull, avoid it. Or at least don't pay for it. * "Fright Night" (2011), by Craig Gillespie, with Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell. Very decent remake of the 1985 vampire-next-door classic, definitely worth your time. * "Boogie Nights" (1997), by Paul Thomas Anderson, with Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore and Burt Reynolds. Only took me 15 years to see this mode ...
