In the land known for fairies and the Blarney Stone, is it any wonder that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction? In honor of the patron saint of Ireland and St. Patrick's day, here are some of the strangest and weirdest true facts about Ireland and the Irish. According to Irish legend, Ireland's St. Brendan discovered America 1,000 years before Christopher Columbus. - Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was not Irish but was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave. More at: Who Was the Man Known as St. Patrick? Dame Alice Kytler was allegedly the last witch in Ireland. She was born in Kilkenny in 1280 and married four times. All of her husbands died, and Dame Alice was accused of poisoning them. The following counties are among the most widely visited in Ireland. With their lively arts and culture attractions it's not hard to see why. COUNTY ANTRIM Belfast City (in Irish, Beal Feirste) is the capital of Northern Ireland and is located in County Antrim, one of Ireland most visited counties. History and politics have always played a major role in the fabric of Belfast, and perhaps for that reason its citizens are among the most vivid and witty people you'll ever meet. Unsurprisingly, Belfast is rich in culture, art, music, dance, sports, shopping, attractions and historical sites. City Hall, one of the main seats of power, is located on Donegall Square and dominates the area with its magnificent classical renaissance style architecture and Italian marble interior. It was completed in 1903. The Linen Hall Library, also located on Donegall Square, was established in 1788. It houses an Irish collection of over 20,000 volumes and a Robert Burns collection. 'Irish Census: Northern Ireland documents among 'lost' records'. Thousands of Irish census documents, many dating back to the early 19th Century, have been made available to the public online for the first time. The vast majority of pre-1922 records were destroyed in the Irish Civil War by a fire at the Public Record Office. But some of the documents that survived the fire, and others held elsewhere, have now been collated and put online. They include partial census records from 1821 to 1851, a substantial amount from counties now in Northern Ireland. Pre-famine Ireland Surviving documents from the 1821 census include household returns from large parts of County Fermanagh. Many of the 1831 census records for County Londonderry have survived, and a substantial amount of 1851 census documents from County Antrim also remain intact. Most of them are not the original documents, but are contemporaneous copies of census forms archived in offices in what later became Northern Ireland. The surviving documents had ...

Ulster scots info The Ulster Plantation (1605 - 1697) by Gwen Rawlings-Barry* WHAT IS AN ULSTER-SCOT? The Scots who migrated to Northern Ireland beginning about 1605 are generally referred to as 'Ulster-Scots', although sometimes in North America they are referred to as 'Scotch-Irish'. Both terms most commonly refer to those Scots who settled the northern counties of Ireland during the Plantation scheme. However, there were Scots in Ireland as early as the 1400s, such as the McDonalds of County Antrim. There was also a steady stream of Scots migrating to Northern Ireland in the early 1800s as a result of the highland clearances in Scotland. It can therefore be considered that anyone whose ancestors migrated from Scotland to Northern Ireland from 1400 onward, is of Ulster Scottish descent, although the term Ulster-Scot was born with the Plantation scheme. THE ULSTER PLANTATION The majority of Scots who migrated to Northern Ireland came as part of this organized settlement scheme of 1605-1697. Plantation se ...

Thinking today about my Irish roots, my Granny Black was born in Ballymena, County Antrim in 1872, she was taken to Scotland as an orphaned toddler, and raised a large happy family. My Granny Whyte's parents were also from County Antrim, emigrated to Scotland after the Great Famine. She was Granny or Great Granny to, myself, my children, Sheri Hogan Callahan, Jeff Hogan; cousins Gordon and Alan Brown, Fred and Gordon Montgomery, as well as many, many more cousins and their children. We were all so lucky to have descended from these great ladies! Erin go bragh!
Lurgan Hurlers On The Road Again The Meadowbank Sports Stadium in Magherafelt was the venue for Seán Treacy's underage hurlers for the second weekend in succession. Saturday the first of March saw the turn of our most devoted under tens to travel to the County Derry arena. Raul Gontad Doyle, Cahan Kelly, Connor Lennon, Fionn McCrory, Patrick Kane, Thomas Mallon, Fiontán McComb and Charlie Haughian accompanied their families and three of the club's mentors- Damien Kelly, John McComb and Colly McCrory to arguably Ulster's best indoor sports facility. Twenty four under ten teams represented clubs from all over the province of Ulster. It seemed at one stage that it was a case of County Antrim versus the rest; more than half of the clubs present hailed from Antrim - from numerous clubs in greater Belfast right up to the north coast. The coaches knew on glancing at the fixtures that competition would be very tough. Only one of the eight Lurgan players had experience of such a large tournament before today; th ...

Chenoa; was born in County Dublin, Ireland, Feb. 2, 1837; he came to America at the age of 11 years, and lived two years in Toronto, C. Mr. Brady is a self-made man, a most successful farmer and a prominent stock-dealer, having made some of the largest shipments of stock from McLean Co.; he owns a well-improved farm of 156 acres. He was married August 25, 1858, to Miss Jane Boyd, who was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in July, 1839; they have eight children — Lawrence H., Edwin M., Samuel T., Louis R., Mary E., Jennie A., Roscoe J. and Gracie H. Orange Order acquires King William painting Friday, February 07, 2014 The Orange Institution has acquired an outstanding modern painting portraying King William’s arrival in Ireland prior to the Battle of the Boyne. The painting of William of Orange at Whitehouse in County Antrim was painted by local artist Sam McCrory and has been purchased by the Loyal Order for its new interpretive centre at Schomberg House in Belfast. The painting, which the artist researched in exhaustive detail, depicts the Williamite army at Whitehouse, where the bulk of the soldiers landed in June 1690. It is one of a number of artworks now held by Grand Lodge and Director of Services, Dr David Hume, said the painting was a major educational asset for the new interpretive centre, which is planned to open in 2015. He said: "We are looking back but thinking ahead. This is a painting which is a somewhat new theme since most focus on William's arrival bypasses his time at Whitehouse. The Prince arrived there from Carrickfergus to ** ...
Giant’s Causeway, County Antrim, Northern Ireland Photograph by Britain on View, Getty Images Kid Appeal: Ancient volcanic forces forged this spectacular coastal playground. It’s the perfect place to scramble across a mythical landscape. The Site: Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway is a volcanic formation of nearly 40,000 mostly hexagonal columns, forged 60 million years ago when molten lava cooled quickly in the ocean water and contracted into crystallized basalt pillars, some more than 35 feet tall. This geological marvel is interpreted in legend as having been the handiwork of mythical warrior Fionn MacCumhaill (Finn McCool, in English), who conjured his heroic strength and built a bridge across the Irish Sea to attack foes in the Scottish Hebrides. From the 18th century onward, this land bridge emerged as a popular destination for tourists attracted by the honeycomb-like promontory. The Giant’s Causeway was also immortalized in rock music. The formation appears on the cover of Led Zeppelin ...
'Belfast City Hall'. ('Pictures of the Building of the City Hall in 1898', And of the 'White Linen Hall in 1880) 'Belfast City Hall is the civic building of the Belfast City Council. Located in Donegall Square, Belfast, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, it faces north and effectively divides the commercial and business areas of the city centre'. 'The site now occupied by Belfast City Hall was once the home of the White Linen Hall, an important international Linen Exchange. The Street that runs from the back door of Belfast City Hall through the middle of Linen Quarter is Linen Hall Street'. 'Plans for the City Hall began in 1888 when Belfast was awarded city status by Queen Victoria. This was in recognition of Belfast's rapid expansion and thriving linen, rope-making, shipbuilding and engineering industries. During this period Belfast briefly overtook Dublin as the most populous city on the island of Ireland'. 'Construction began in 1898 under the supervision of architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas and was ...
Renting in London 'costs twice as much as elsewhere' Figures from Gumtree show the average UK rent is £665, while tenants in London fork out £1,516 Private rents in London are almost double those in the rest of the UK, but the supply of properties means that the scrabble for newly available homes is greater in other cities around the country, according to figures from listing site Gumtree. It said the current asking price for homes in London was £1,516, with landlords typically asking £1,211 a month for one-bedroom flats and £1,605 for two-bedders. Across the rest of the UK the overall average was £665. The site's analysis of more than 100,000 rental listings each month showed that the cheapest rents were in County Antrim and North Lanarkshire, two areas where tenants were asked for £549 a month. The figures, which compared advertised prices not the achieved rents, showed that between the last quarter of 2012 and the same period of 2013 the sums asked for by landlords in Dundee shot up by 13%, whil ...

Further to my post about SAS Walt McLARNON yesterday. I got the green light from ANZMI ages ago to publish this and have done in a few places, read on and prepare to gag and choke a bit. Robert Richard McLARNON, Born 28 June 1957 at Belfast, County Antrim, of the Hervey Bay area Queensland, a man of adventure, excitement, fought in many areas with different civil and military units all over the world and killed 400 people whilst attached to 22 SAS UK. We think he has a very good imagination and should be writing books on his factitious world of fantasy. Read on good reader, read on (please note I have personally heard this chap relate some of the lies and fantasy tales included in this expose, not something I want to repeat but anyway I digress). McLARNON claims to have served in the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) from 30 June 1975 until 14 June 1982 Northern Ireland during which time he was attached 3rd QRF (Quick Reaction Force), 22 SAS United Kingdom . A total number of 7 years’ service with the RU ...
