Confederation Cup: Spain OUTCLASS Nigeria: Jordi Alba began and ended Spain's scoring As Uruguay hammers Tahiti 8-0 Spain Sunday ended Nigeria's campaign at the 15th FIFA Confederations Cup after beating the Super Eagles 3-0 in Fortaleza. Jordi Alba scored a brace while Fernado Torres added the other to end the the Africans hope of advancing into the semi finals. The first goal came the third minute when the Barcelona stalwart walted through a sea of Nigerian legs to place beyond Vincent Enyeama. It was not only a heart warming victory for Spain, it crucially paid back the Eagles for the defeat they inflicted on the Europeans at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. Again on this partucular ocaasion, the Brazilain public made Nigeria to feel at home as the packed Estadio Castelao showed their bias for the African champions. MALI 2002, GERMANY 2006 REECHO -Enyeama, Mikel, Ejide Face Hammer -Harrison Jalla Blasts NFF Egg Heads Another angle that emerged in the wake of the infamous Super Eagles players’ strike in Windhoek, Namibia is the possibility of three senior stars in the squad – acting captain, Vincent Enyeama as well as his deputies, John Mikel Obi and Austin Ejide – taking the rap as scapegoats for the bonus row that threatened to derail Nigeria’s outing at the ongoing FIFA Confederation Cup in Brazil. Although the players insisted they acted as one and spoke with a single voice, additional reports indicate that officials at The Glasshouse are already setting the stage for punitive measures, which would see the three players suspended from national duties for a period of time, while head coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi will take a heavy fine. Independent observes, though, interpreted the NFF’s reaction to yet another trepidation over the looming threat from ‘the enemy within,’ who apparently will take shee ...
SPLENDID START FOR AFRICA, WORLD CHAMPIONS AND THE HOSTS By James Kombe Nigeria, representing Africa in the 2013 FIFA Confederation Cup, produced a commendable start in the competition after claiming an easy 6-1 victory over Tahiti on the night of Monday 17th June, 2013. The tournament, being hosted in South America’s Brazil, commenced on Saturday 15th and will have its final played on 30th this month. Nnamadi Oduamadi completed a hat-trick while Uwa Echiejile scored a brace for the Super Eagles as they subjected the Pacific Islanders to humiliation in their first match at a senior FIFA world tournament. The only Tahiti consolation goal came from Jonathan Tehau, who converted Marama Vahirua’s corner with a wonderful header past Nigerian goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama on the 54th minute. Tehau however erroneously scored a 68th minute own goal to add to the African champions’ tally on their 19th match without defeat, their longest ever unbeaten run. The Super Eagles defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in the Febru ...

FIFA has also released the squad list for the 8 countries participating in the competition. Leading the Nigerian squad will be Super Eagles stand-in captain, Vincent Enyeama, who leads the team as a result of Joseph Yobo’s absence. The 23-man squad released by Keshi has no major surprise with regular guns all getting a place in the final roster for the ‘Champions Tournament’. Nigeria trip to Brazil as the Africa’s flag bearers after the heroics in South Africa which saw them win their third Africa Nations Cup. For the group phase, Nigeria is pitched alongside world champions, Spain; South American kings, Uruguay; and Tahiti who will offer the Super Eagles their first test in Brazil.
