South African football looks set to be handed a major boost in the 2015 CAF inter-continental competitions, with two PSL outfits entering into both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. Having four teams in African competition every year used to be normal for South African football, however following a number of poor performances on the continent, Mzansi was demoted and only allowed one team in each tournament. Now, following Orlando Pirates’ impressive performance last season when they reached the final of the prestigious competition, South Africa have accumulated enough points to warrant four teams taking part. The way it works is that all of the teams participating in the two cups are given a certain amount of points if they make it through to the group stages. These points are then made the subject of a multiplier depending on how recent the performance was. The points run over a period of five years and the top twelve ranked teams get four participant slots. So, for instance, in t ...
Can Baxter lead Chiefs to glory? 08 February By Nkareng Matshe Stuart Baxter ended Kaizer Chiefs’ seven-year irritation when he won them the Absa Premiership title last season, and now, as they start their African Champions League campaign tonight, he’ll similarly be expected to bring them closer to the promised land. While their rivals Orlando Pirates boast a Champions League winners’ medal, a silver medal achieved last year and also made the semi-finals in 2006, Chiefs can be considered novices in the competition, albeit that they were the very first South African team to take part in it after readmission. Amakhosi take on Black Africa of Namibia in the preliminary round of the Champions League tonight (FNB Stadium, 8.15), the first time in nine years that Chiefs partake in continental club competitions. They were barred by the Confederation of African Football in 2005 after they withdrew from the Confederation Cup that year, but it’s not as though Chiefs were eligible anyway, as they had failed ...
SuperSport United will kick start their African adventure in the Confederation Cup with a contest at home to Botswana side, Gaborone United, on Saturday evening at Lucas Moripe Stadium (20h15). Matsatsantsa had an impressive run last season in the CAF competition, missing out on a fourth round appearance with a 3-1 aggregate loss to Egyptian side, ENNPI. Head coach, Cavin Johnson is relishing the prospect of playing in the Confederations Cup against Gaborone United and see's the competition as a perfect platform for his troops to test their mental against the best in Africa. "These CAF competitions are crucial for us and the development of players", says Jonson. "We have been looking forward to this tournament for a while now and we can't wait to get going. Gaborone United are a formidable outfit, they have done well in recent years and we are well aware of their record against South African sides. What is needed from us is to go out there and play our normal game and try to get a positive results in our ...
South Africa will have two representatives again in the CAF club competitions from 2015 onwards. The exploits of Orlando Pirates in reaching the final of this year’s CAF Champions League has afforded the country enough points to move back into the top 12 ranked nations for their club football. That means that the league winners and runners-up in the 2013/14 season will compete in the CAF Champions in 2015, with the Nedbank Cup winners and third-placed team in the league entering the CAF Confederation Cup. There has been renewed interest in competing in Africa’s club competitions in recent years, prompted by Orlando Pirates’ chairman Irvin Khoza and his desire to add a second continental title to his club’s trophy cabinet. But it also arguably started with Black Leopards’ run in the 2012 Confederation Cup when the lowly Limpopo side made it through four rounds of tough competition before losing out to Sudan giants Al Merreikh. That reignited South African fans’ passion for the continental title ...
Bafana, Nigeria to meet at CHAN 18 September By David LEGGE Johannesburg - Major rivals South Africa and Nigeria were drawn together on Wednesday in the first round of the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN). Mali and Mozambique complete a tough Group A in a tournament for home-based footballers to be staged between January 11 and February 1 in South Africa. The rivalry between South Africa and Nigeria is among the most intense on the continent with the West Africans having a distinct advantage since it began 21 years ago. More than half the South African side are locals while eight of the 23 Nigerians at the 2013 Confederation Cup in Brazil play at home. South Africa are competing at the CHAN for the second time with a makeshift team losing to Algeria in the 2011 quarter-finals in Sudan. It will be the first appearance by the Nigerians, who edged Ivory Coast 4-3 overall in a qualifying thriller to secure a place. The mini-league will be hosted by Cape Town, as will Group B, which comprises Zimbabwe, ...
By PFRANCIS LARYEA TOTTI Defender Jonathan Quartey has been linked with a return to his boyhood club Ashantigold. The 23-year-old is looking for new employers after he was released by French outfit Nice in January due to lack of playing time. The former Kaizer Chiefs and Samsunspor strong centre-back is also reported to be on the radar of Ghanaian Champions Asante Kotoko but is being courted by his former club. The miners have remained quiet in the transfer market but sources say officials of the club have made initial contact with the player over the possibility of re-launching his career at the Obuasi-based club. Ashgold are confident of winning Sunday’s MTN Ghana FA cup finals against New Edubiase and have therefore set their eyes on recruiting quality players for their potential involvement in next year’s CAF Confederation Cup. Kotoko are also believed to be monitoring the situation as he is seen as a perfect replacement for Awal Mohammed who has joined South African side Maritzburg. The former Gh ...
