Last year the "Enlist Act" was submitted to Congress with the following goal: Encourage New Legalized Immigrants to Start Training Act or the ENLIST Act - Authorizes the enlistment in the Armed Forces of aliens unlawfully present in the United States on December 31, 2011, who: (1) have been continuously present in the United States since such date; (2) were younger than 15 years of age when they initially entered the United States; and (3) are otherwise eligible for original enlistment in a regular component of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. How far down the rabbit hole are we now?
Today is Wyatt's and my last family day with Steven before he leaves. For those who who aren't friends with him on here and may not know, he is going Active Duty with the Coast Guard. We should see him on Thanksgiving and Christmas before he actually deploys but this is our first time without him for more than a month. A month was too long. He should be back next September. I have lots of support with family and the Police Department Family which we appreciate more than we can say. I'm not looking forward to this but like he has done before and so many families have gone through before this, we are doing our part in offering our most dear to the service of the United States Military. Babe, you know I'm beyond proud of you. We all know this is just in your blood and I know where all our guns are here at home. I love you so much and so many here are behind you but especially me and Wyatt. Come back with your shield or On It.

Self-doubt is a crippling emotion, but if you find yourself in a situation where the president of the United States looks you in the face in public and says, "Brownie, you're doing a great job," then you are not doubting yourself nearly enough. This thought occurs to me as Ray Nagin prepares to occupy his new residence in a federal prison. As one who was on the scene in southeast Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, I had the distinct impression that Nagin was THE LEAST culpable of the lot. The president, the governor, and the head of FEMA were all, if I may use the phrase, out of their depth. FEMA in particular was responsible for probably hundreds of unnecessary deaths and much other harm. The only government agency that performed at all laudably was the Coast Guard. Otherwise, private individuals, organizations, and firms did all the helpful work, and they would have done it quicker and better had governments of every size, shape, and form stayed out of the way.

In 1790, the Coast Guard had its beginnings as the Revenue Cutter Service. In 1830, plans for the city of Chicago were laid out. In 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were axed to death in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie Borden, Andrew's daughter from a previous marriage, was accused of the killings, but acquitted at trial. 13 Proofs That Dept. Of Homeland Security Has Become Obama’s Standing Army by NTEB News Desk by NTEB Contributor John W. Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute "A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty." James Madison If the United States is a police state, then the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is its national police force, with all the brutality, ineptitude and corruption such a role implies. In fact, although the DHS’ governmental bureaucracy may at times appear to be inept and b***ling, it is ruthlessly efficient when it comes to building what the Founders feared most—a standing army on American soil. The third largest federal agency behind the Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense, the DHS—with its 240,000 full-time workers, $61 billion budget and sub-agencies that include the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency ...

From the Sarge: Memorial Day weekend, some call it the unofficial kick-off of summer. Some look at it as a 3 day weekend with cookouts, maybe a getaway to the lake, festivals and sales. It's become all of those things, but it's also much, much more. Many miss the point of this day entirely. Odd, that our government gave us a day off to remember those that died, odder still that many do not. Memorial Day is a day that originated after the Civil War, to honor those that died on both sides of the conflict. Since then it has evolved and has become a day to honor, memorialize, the memory and sacrifices of our men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice, their life. You may have heard the phrase, "they wrote a blank check, payable to the United States of America". Many of those checks were cashed with the blood of our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Army Air Corps, (later) the Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard. There are thousands of cemeteries with hundreds of thousands of marble headstones and bronze pl ...

This is a list of lighthouses in the United States. The United States has had approximately a thousand lights as well as light towers, range lights, and pier head lights. Michigan has the most lights of any state with over 150 past and present lights. Most of the lights in the United States have been built and maintained by the Coast Guard (since 1939) and its predecessors, the United States Lighthouse Service (1910–1939) and the United States Lighthouse Board (1852–1910). Before the Lighthouse Board was established, local collectors of customs were responsible for lighthouses under Stephen Pleasonton. As their importance to navigation has declined and as public interest in them has increased, the Coast Guard has been handing over ownership and in some cases responsibility for running them to other parties, the chief of them being the National Park Service under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000.
Marine Corps ranked worst service branch to join, and I love it stanrmitchell.com This article on Yahoo written by Ron Johnson completely made my day. The writer was asked to rank best military branch to serve in. He ranks them as: Army Air Force Navy Coast Guard Marine Corps (Worst Military Branch) And here’s what he had to say about the Marine Corps: “Of all the military branches, the Marine Corps ranks as the least attractive choice for this author. Technically part of the Navy, the Marine Corps are the elite war fighters of the United States Military. The leathernecks of the USMC are truly fearsome fighters, tough as nails and ready and willing to fight all comers. The Marines turn recruits into stone-cold killers and they make no secrets about that fact. Marines live tough lives, sleeping on board Navy ships, charging through the surf and crawling in the sand with one goal in mind: engage the enemy. Unfortunately, when Marines fulfill their obligation and exit the service, they seem to find diffi ...
Dear Friends-On Wednesday, 2/12/14, one of the great comedians of all time passed away. I really loved his early TV comedy shows; they were full of life and something special! John. _ Sid Caesar was born in 1922 in Yonkers, New York. The son of immigrants, Caesar worked as a musician during the Great Depression. At the start of World War II, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed in Brooklyn, playing military revues. In the 1940s, Caesar developed a nightclub act on Broadway, which he turned into the popular and Emmy Award-winning television program Your Show of Shows. He also appeared in the Grease film musicals. On November 15, 2013, the Office of the Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) issued an official Policy Memorandum which strongly encourages local USCIS officers to grant “parole in place” to undocumented immigrants who are the spouses, children, or parents of current of former members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Selected Reserve. “Parole in Place” is a discretionary legal status which allows undocumented immigrants to apply for permanent residency WITHOUT having to leave the United States. On 1 November 1859, the CAPE LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE was first lit. Standing 163 feet (50 m) tall and located on the southern Outer Banks of North Carolina, the CAPE LOOKOUT LIGHT was the only lighthouse in the United States to be painted with a unique checkered daymark pattern. It was lit using a first-order fresnel lens which was visible up to 19 miles (30 km) away. When North Carolina seceded from the Union in 1861, the lens was removed by Confederate troops to prevent the US Navy from using it to navigate along the coast. By the end of 1862, however, the light had been recaptured by the Union Navy and relit with a third-order lens. In 1864, Confederate raiders were unsuccessful in their attempts to destroy the lighthouse. In 1867, two years after the end of the Civil War, the first-order fresnel lens was re-installed and relit. It continued to operate until 1975, when it was deactivated, the lens removed, and the lighthouse marked with two aerial beacons. Today the CAPE LOOKOUT LIGHTHOUSE is administered . ...
Blackwater and the Katrina Disaster Near the end of the book, “Blackwater”, by Jeremy Scahill, there’s this rather surprising account of the mercenary army’s first project in the United States after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in August 2005: “The government paid Blackwater $950 a day for each of its guards in the area. That contract kicked off a hurricane boon for Blackwater; by the end of 2005, in just three months, the government had paid Blackwater at least $33.3 million for its Katrina work for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). All of these services were justified by the government’s claim of not having enough personnel to deploy quickly in the hurricane zone. ‘We saw the costs, in terms of accountability and dollars, for this practice in Iraq, and now we are seeing it in New Orleans,’ said Illinois Democrat Jan Schakowsky, one of Blackwater’s few critics in Congress. ‘They have again given a sweetheart contract – without an open bidding process – to a co ...
This cover photo is one I use often on Memorial Day weekend. It is of the cemetery at Collville Sur Mer, above Omaha Beach at Normandy. There are more than 9,000 American boys buried there. Every American should visit this piece of the United States (France gave the land to us after the War) once in their life. These young men died so that we can complain about our country and our lot in life in the most free of countries. I post this in honor of all of our service personnel. I would also say that the Coast Guard was well represented on D-Day. They were coxens on many of the Higgins Boats that brought the boys onto the beaches. Semper Paratus.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Across-the-board spending cuts will make the United States more vulnerable to a terror attack, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday. Because the $85 billion in cuts are spread among domestic and defense budgets and don't differentiate about what is affected, Napolitano said, they make it difficult to mitigate security threats. "We're going to do everything we can to minimize that risk, but the sequester makes it awfully, awfully tough," she said. "Put simply, the automatic budget reduction mandated by sequestration would be disruptive and destructive to our nation's security and economy," the secretary said during a White House media briefing. "It would negatively affect the mission readiness and capabilities of the men and women on our front lines. It would undermine the significant progress we've made over the past 10 years to build the nation's preparedness and resiliency." She said the department has begun to furlough Customs and Border Protection off ...
World War II Before the American entry into World War II, cutters of the Coast Guard patrolled the North Atlantic. In January 1940 President Roosevelt directed the establishment of the Atlantic Weather Observation Service using Coast Guard cutters and U.S. Weather Bureau observers. After the invasion of Denmark by Germany in April 1940, President Roosevelt ordered the International Ice Patrol to continue as a legal pretext to patrol Greenland, whose cryolite mines were vital to refining aluminum and whose geographic location allowed accurate weather forecasts to be made for Europe. The Greenland patrol was maintained by the Coast Guard for the duration of the war. The USCGC Modoc (WPG-46), was peripherally involved in the chase and sinking of the German battleship Bismarck. Shortly after Germany declared war on the United States, German submarines began Operation Drumbeat ("Paukenschlag"), sinking ships off the American coast. Many Coast Guard cutters were involved in rescue operations following German at ...
Dear Valued Clients: No doubt you have been hearing much information regarding the Carnival Triumph incident that has been unfolding this past week. I would like to clear up a few items that may have been exaggerated somewhat by the media. On the last day of a three night voyage, as the ship was returning to its home port in Galveston Texas, a fire broke out in the engine room. The automatic fire extinguishers kicked in immediately and completely put the fire out. No passenger or crew member was injured. As a result of the fire however, propulsion was lost and the ship could not move forward under its own power. Electrical and plumbing was also affected throughout the ship. Tug boats were dispatched to pull the ship back to the United States and the US Coast Guard was also in attendance off the side of the ship for the entire voyage home. As has been the industry standard since the Titanic incident of 1912,cruise ships travel in twos so that there is always another vessel nearby that can assist in the ev ...
James Walker I have attended seven congressional hearings since 2005 regarding issues of cruise ship passenger safety. At the last hearing, before Sen. Jay Rockefeller, cruise expert and author Ross Klein said fires broke out in 79 cruise ships from 1990 to 2011. Most of these fires received little coverage in the U.S. press. It is a topic that the travel publications avoid and travel agents do not like to hear. In 2011, three-quarters of the nearly 16 million cruise bookings worldwide were made from the United States, according to the industry group Cruise Lines International Association, which represents 26 cruise lines, including the world's largest, Carnival and Royal Caribbean. the Coast Guard is underfunded and understaffed and can't possibly conduct adequate inspections of the hundreds of cruise ships that call regularly on U.S. ports across the nation. And the ships are getting bigger and carrying more passengers ever year. For example, Disney Fantasy -- whose safety is not in doubt -- is 14 decks ...

RELIGION 1880 The Baptist Foreign Mission Convention of the United States of American was formed at a meeting in Montgomery, Alabama, on November 24, 1880. W. W. Colley became the first corresponding secretary. Not only did the convention support African missions abroad, at home it was an anti-liquor and anti-tobacco organization. Colley had been a missionary sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention in Africa from 1875 to 1879, and did not agree with that convention's treatment of Africans. UNTIED States Coast Guard 1880 The Pea Island, North Carolina, Lifesaving Station was the first (and only) all-black Coast Guard facility. Richard Etheridge, a former slave, established it. I am so happy La'Shanda Jones, is there for us and I certainly hope the U.S. Coast Guard remains on the coasts of the United States. The Guard would be a natural part of a new Department of Peace, replacing the War Department, *** Defence Department. The new agency established to turn our country from a war based economy and war culture to a culture of peace.

Philippines gets guns for US-supplied ships The Philippine Navy will get newer and more powerful guns that could augment weapons for two patrol ships acquired recently from the United States. The Pentagon recently awarded a $24 million contract to Kentucky-based BAE Systems Land and Armaments for 21 Mk 38 Mod 2 chain guns for the US and Philippines navies. The Philippines is procuring the guns under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, a US Navy statement revealed. The Philippine Navy acquired the 1st of two Hamilton-class all-weather patrol ships from the US Coast Guard last year. She was re-christened the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar and is the spearhead of the country's presence in the disputed Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal. The US had stripped the ship of her more sophisticated weapons before turning her over. The Mk 38 Mod 2 gun is an improved version of the 25mm Bushmaster that was taken off the BRP Del Pilar. A 2nd Hamilton-class cutter was turned over to the Philippine Navy last May (re-chr ...
The dedicated, intelligent and committed patriots who VOLUNTARILY stand in the ranks of our Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard are why the United States, despite the apologies of President Obama, is still the strongest nation on the face of the Earth and still has the power to protect its citizens. A Commander in Chief with the same values as his military would do much to settle unrest around the world.
Please pray for the family and friends of Beverly Funderburg today and in the days, weeks and months ahead. Today, Grandma Bev will be laid to rest. Her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends will miss her greatly. She was involved in church for many years, she was a Spar in the Coast Guard, she worked for the Veterans Administration, she was involved in the work of the American Legion Hut and I'm sure I have missed something. She loved her family with all of her heart. Her family, friends, and acquaintances are spread across the United States. Please remember them all including a former daughter in law who loved her very much and will miss her too. She is and was a person who was easy to look up to and easy to like. I will always hold her in high regards and feel blessed for knowing her and having her in my life.

On this date in 1918, the Imperial German submarine U-156, under the command of Richard Feldt, attacked the town of Orleans, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. She fired her two 105-mm deck guns at the town, which sustained only minor damage. Gunfire and torpedoes sank a moored tugboat, the Perth Amboy, and its four barges. Thirty-two merchant seamen and civilians, including the captain's wife and children, were able to escape in lifeboats. Men from the nearby Coast Guard station alerted Chatham Naval Air Station. Nine Curtiss HS-2L and R-9 seaplanes were dispatched to bomb the U-boat, but failed to score any hits. The U-156 escaped, but disappeared at sea on 25 Sep 1918. It was the first time the continental United States was shelled by enemy guns since the Siege of Fort Texas by Mexivan forces in 1846.
So five men sit in a room right? When one says, "Man Great Britain *** *** " and Benjamin Franklin stands up and says, "We're not gonna take it!" and Thomas Jefferson stands and speaks "NO! We're not gonna take it!" and then John Adams, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman join in with all of em sayin "WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT, ANYMORE!" true story. Anyway after we suckerpunched King Henry we stole the red from him used blue for the ocean we drove them out of and used white because we got tired of dying cotton. AMERICA was crafted and the document that secured her birth was forged all on the 2nd?!?!?! Ah we had to take two days for rest (comeon we all know how long english essays take, at least the really good ones) until everyone signed, for our 4th of July to be dawned as the securing of the great nation of the United States. We made an Army amassed in size and destructive force. We made a Navy incomparable in tact and maneuverability. We made a Coast Guard impenetrable by any large forced enemy within ...
The online news portal of TV5 MANILA, Philippines - China’s claim over the Scarborough Shoal is legally weak as it is based only on its own map showing jurisdiction on the area, Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile said Sunday. “It’s simple, China’s claim is legally weak. How can they claim occupation of Scarborough Shoal? Did their birds land there? Did they mark their fish there? Are these theirs? I can also draw my own map and claim their islands,” Enrile said in Filipino in an interview over dzBB. Enrile said Beijing cannot rely on mere theory that it owns Scarborough Shoal. “What kind of theory is that? Limahong lived in Puga Island in Batanes and there are many Filipino-Chinese there, so they can claim it is theirs? Just like the Indian Ocean, which can be claimed by India, or the Strait of Magellan between Puerto Rico and Chile, should be for Portugal or Spain?” Enrile asked. He also dismissed the statement made by Beijing that the military drill being initiated by United States and the ...

James Carville To Obama On Oil Spill: 'Get Down Here And Take Control... We're About To Die' First Posted: 05/26/10 09:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 05:35 PM ET Democratic strategist and New Orleans resident James Carville is not relenting from his frenzied plea for President Obama to take a more direct and active role in addressing the Gulf oil blowout. "The President of the United States could've come down here, he could've been involved with the families of these 11 people" who died on the rig after an explosion, Carville said on ABC's Good Morning America. "He could be commandeering tankers and making BP bring tankers in and clean this up. They could be deploying people to the coast right now. He could be with the Corps of Engineers and the Coast Guard...doing something about these regulations. These people are crying, they're begging for something down here, and it just looks like he's not involved in this." His voice rising, Carville cried out, "Man, you got to get down here and take control of this! P ...

I am off to the west side Manhattan piers for the start of fleetweek. Looking forward to boarding Aircraft Carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, the amphibious assult ship USS Wasp, and the tall sail ship the Coast Guard Eagle. The Eagle is a cadet training vessel that was originally commissioned as the Segelschulschiff Hort Wessel, a Nazi training vessel taken as war reparations by the United States and commissioned into the Coast Guard in 1946: she is still in active service.
Oh, it's the President of the United States of America speaking just a few blocks away at the Fox Theater. That's why that noisey Coast Guard helicopter keeps circling around. Doesn't he know that some of us in Redwood City go to bed early? Just say'n...
