USCG history for March 23 2008-Two Coast Guard helicopters worked with the F/V Alaska Warrior to save 42 of 47 crewmen from the sinking F/V Alaska Ranger in an Easter Sunday blizzard amidst 20-foot waves. There was flooding in aft steerage of Ranger and the doors would not close. The ship’s shell was rusty and flat-bottomed, built for Gulf of Mexico. It was located 120 miles west of Dutch Harbor in the Bering Sea. CGC Munro's HH-65 Dolphin pulled five fishermen from the water, three of whom had to be cut free from the netting and ropes. The HH-60 Jayhawk from St. Paul Station in the Pribiloff Islands lifted 15 sailors out of the sea and onto the sister ship, F/V Alaska Warrior. Warrior also saved 22 lives on its own. The crew of Munro received the Coast Guard Unit Commendation and aviators LT Brian J. McLaughlin, LT Timothy L. Schmitz, LT Steven M. Bonn, LT Greg S. COAST GUARD SPILLS THE BEANS ON GOOGLE'S MYSTERY BARGES Despite non-disclosure agreement, Coast Guard says Google is involved By Sharon Gaudin Computerworld - The U.S. Coast Guard has given up what could be a key clue in the tale of two mysterious barges moored on either side of the country. After repeatedly declining to comment about the barges, which appear to be carrying structures made of shipping crates and are docked in the harbors in both San Francisco and Portland, Me., a Coast Guard spokesman divulged some information today, according to a CNBC.com report. "We can confirm that Google is involved or associated with the barge, but there is a nondisclosure agreement in effect; the Coast Guard is unable to discuss or divulge any further details at this time," said Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas McKenzie, a Coast Guard spokesman.. Google has not returned repeated requests for information about the mystery barges. These shipping containers piled on top of a barge in Portland, Maine, could be a Google f ...

Coast Guard visits mysterious 'Google barge' San Francisco — The Coast Guard on Wednesday visited the mysterious "Google barge" floating in San Francisco Bay, but the agency would not reveal anything about the tech giant's hush-hush vessel. Google has refused to acknowledge any connection to the barge and three others like it. But it is zealously guarding its privacy around the four-story stack of containers docked at a pier on Treasure Island and a companion in Portland, Maine. At least one Coast Guard employee has been required to sign a non-disclosure agreement with the company regarding the San Francisco project, Petty Officer 2nd Class Barry Bena told Reuters. An inspector with an unidentified California agency said he, too, had to sign such a document. Bena told USA TODAY on Wednesday that he was later instructed by superiors to say nothing. "Commercial confidentiality prohibits me from talking about this," said Bena, a spokesman with the Alameda district office. He added that he is not authorized ...

Well since graduating from school 30+ years ago I never went to college. I went into the Coast Guard and learned electronics and left as an 3rd class Petty Officer, then worked at STK as a field engineer for several years. Then worked for Seimans Nixdorf printing systems as a Customer Engineer, ran my own businesses for about 20 years, and now I have registered togo to college. So I am doing it backwards.

BREAKING NEWS! SHELL'S DRILLING WOES DEEPEN: More details are emerging that Shell is facing some serious setbacks in its conquest for the Arctic's oil, including a criminal investigation on one of its ships. was attempting to tow the Kulluk oil rig - which has no propulsion system of its own - from an Alaskan port to avoid paying state taxes when high seas and severe storms snagged the ship and grounded it off a remote island. But the Kulluk may just be the tip of the iceberg. CBS News is now reporting that the Coast Guard is pursuing another ship contracted by Shell for criminal investigations after discovering serious safety and pollution control violations onboard. When investigators boarded the Noble Discoverer, Shell had already provided the entire crew with lawyers and forbade them to speak publicly. Time and time again, Shell Oil has shown little respect for the environment or the public's right to know when it comes to Arctic drilling. That's why our attorneys are fighting to stop their plans. My cover picture today is of my class at U.S. Navy Hospital Corps School in San Diego. The Coast Guard had no HM School at the time. I was already an HM3, but had never been through the school and decided, what the *** I'd better go. It worked for me. I was a Petty Officer and out ranked all the Navy students so they made me Company Adjutant. that and the rank gave me open gangway for liberty. I spent a lot of nights in Tijuana, Mexico and weekends on the beaches of San Diego. Good times were had by all. I'm the one standing just to the left of our class nurse. Please note: do to the timing many of these kids ended with the Fleet Marine Forces in Vietnam. I went there with the Coast Guard in 1967. Have a great day all and please, all my East Coast friends stay safe from Sandy. My prayers are with you. :-)

Words of WISDOM from my father, Senior Chief Petty Officer, E-8, U.S. Coast Guard. "If you need to use a shim to get something to 'fit' then use a small piece of wood, cardboard, etc." The Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of "shim": "a thin often tapered piece of wood, metal, or stone used (as in leveling) to fill in space." Why was this important today?! Well, I spent the afternoon shopping at IKEA, and bought a new bed-frame for when Republican National Delegate Cody J Baker comes to stay here in St. Petersburg. and also when my cousin Anthony Isambert comes to visit. Well, the normally precise Swedish construction of IKEA was a tad off . . . hem, haw, what to do?! Oh, Dad used to always use a "shim" to level uneven surfaces. Finally, after a shim was put in place, cranks of the wrench tightened the bed-frame, voila, the TIGHTEST construction of a bed-frame on the planet. Something tells me that my good friends such as Nathan Hallet, Jeffrey Brandes, Clay Hall, et al had Dads, Grandpas who ...
