Coast Guard & Bering Sea
A coast guard or coastguard is a maritime security organization of a particular country. The Bering Sea is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean. It comprises a deep water basin, which then rises through a narrow slope into the shallower water above the continental shelves./5

Coast Guard crews join search for missing crewmembers from capsized South Korean trawler in Bering Sea
Sailed out of New Bedford last night just before midnight. The hurricane barrier looked much smaller at 0dark30 than it did at 1330 when I entered. Not much room to maneuver a 400' unit in that harbor. But enough. It was good to see NB again. Saw several vessels that I would routinely see out on Georges Bank back then. And I still miss it...always will. What struck me during the steam down Buzzards Bay was the fact that I survived 21 winters out there and another 11 in the Bering Sea when better men were not as lucky. Maybe the reason was the Saint Christophers medal my Grandmother gave me as a teenager clearly headed to a career at sea. Maybe it was just a sound foundation in basic seamanship from my Coast Guard years. And perhaps it was just having the required balance of temerity and testosterone and a growing family at home counting on a decent trip that pushed us and kept us going. Probably all of the above. But I know I felt thankful last night for all those years as a fisherman and for the shipma . ...

USCG history for March 23 2008-Two Coast Guard helicopters worked with the F/V Alaska Warrior to save 42 of 47 crewmen from the sinking F/V Alaska Ranger in an Easter Sunday blizzard amidst 20-foot waves. There was flooding in aft steerage of Ranger and the doors would not close. The ship’s shell was rusty and flat-bottomed, built for Gulf of Mexico. It was located 120 miles west of Dutch Harbor in the Bering Sea. CGC Munro's HH-65 Dolphin pulled five fishermen from the water, three of whom had to be cut free from the netting and ropes. The HH-60 Jayhawk from St. Paul Station in the Pribiloff Islands lifted 15 sailors out of the sea and onto the sister ship, F/V Alaska Warrior. Warrior also saved 22 lives on its own. The crew of Munro received the Coast Guard Unit Commendation and aviators LT Brian J. McLaughlin, LT Timothy L. Schmitz, LT Steven M. Bonn, LT Greg S. Rough waters from Bering Sea to Prince William Sound for Alaska vessels SEAFOOD.COM NEWS [Alaska Dispatch] By Jerzy Shedlock - July 8, 2013 - A handful of ships have run aground, sank or caught fire over the past week prompting Alaska’s Coast Guard to divvy its resources. Efforts to pull the fishing vessel Lone Star from the Igushik River near Dillingham continue while additional personnel responded to a minor diesel spill in Prince William Sound on Saturday. At about 10:30 p.m. Friday, divers secured the Lone Star’s portside vents and sealed many of the ship’s doors and hatches, said Coast Gaurd Petty Officer 1st Class Shawn Eggart. The accident aboard the 78-foot fishing vessel occurred about 6:55 a.m. Sunday, when the Coast Guard received a mayday call from a crewmember aboard the vessel. The changing tide had reportedly swung the anchored ship into its anchor chain, which caught on the transducer and coolant lines, pulling them loose and creating a hole in the steel hull of the boat. “Attem .. ...

First Presbyterian Church Southampton, New York “Search and Rescue” Matthew 2: 1 – 12 The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2013 One of my favorite TV shows is “Deadliest Catch,” on The Discovery Channel. The show is about a bunch of Alaskan crab fishermen… and their daily life-and-death battle with the high winds, rolling waves, and polar ice of the Bering Sea. As the title of the show suggests, crab fishing on the Bering Sea is highly dangerous business… and, although strict safety precautions are taken by the boat captains and their crews, every once in a while someone gets sick or injured, and must be evacuated to a hospital. And, whenever that happens, the captain jumps on the radio… calls up the Coast Guard… sends out a plea for help… and a “search and rescue” mission is launched in a matter of minutes. An orange and white Coast Guard helicopter is quickly fired up; a highly trained crew of pilots, medical technicians, and ocean swimmers climb on board; the co ...
Standards For Fast Plans In Deadliest Sea: The Untold Story Behind the Greatest Rescue in Coast Guard History Soon after 2:00 A.M. on Easter morning, March 23, 2008, the fishing trawler Alaska Ranger began taking on water in the middle of the frigid Bering Sea. While the first mate broadcast Mayday calls to a remote Coast Guard station more than eight hundred miles away, the men on the ship's icy deck scrambled to inflate life rafts and activate the beacon lights, which would guide rescuers to them in the water. By 4:30 A.M., the wheelhouse of the Ranger was just barely visible above the sea's surface, and most of the forty-seven crew members were in the water, wearing the red survival suits - a number of them torn or inadequately sized - that were supposed to keep them from freezing to death. Every minute in the twenty-foot swells was a fight for survival. Many knew that if they weren't rescued soon, they would drown or freeze to death. Two Coast Guard helicopter rescue teams were woken up in the middle ...

Dad, one year ago this weekend... I held your hand as you drew your last breath. Those once powerful, huge, wrench-turning hands that had a perfect record of over 25 years of every fire truck they touched... making it to every fire... and those hands that kept the Coast Guard Cutter "Northwind" partroling the Bering Sea in the 1960's... helped clean up the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska in 1989... and trained younger pairs of hands to repair patrol boats during Gulf War I... I just could not believe how quickly the strength was drained from those hands... it all happened so fast... I miss you dad... and I will never forget your criticism of education... that your teachers told you WHAT to think rather than teaching you HOW to think... dad... you would be happy to know that there is a group of us that are actively trying to change that mentality... your criticism is shared by a growing group of pedogogically discontented educators... and dad... I am a part of the amazing transformation taking place all o ...
A glimpse of what our world has looked like for the last 4 months. A view from a Coast Guard helicopter above a line of boats breaking their way through the FROZEN Bering Sea to go offload their crab in St Paul Island. To get a sense of the size.the last boat in that line is 135' long.compare some of those ice chunks to the size of the last boat and you can understand how we've spent our entire season trying to avoid re-enacting the final scene from Titanic.
Okay, I need reasons to not enlist in the Coast Guard. ...And volunteer for Bering Sea duty. It doesn't sound like as bad of an idea as it should.
