ANNUAL Armed Forces DAY CROSSBAND MILITARY/Amateur Radio COMMUNICATIONS TEST (10 MAY 2014) The Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are co-sponsoring the annual military/Amateur Radio communications tests in celebration of the 64th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day (AFD). Although the actual Armed Forces Day is celebrated on Saturday, May 17, 2014, the AFD Military/Amateur Crossband Communications Test will be conducted 10 May 2014 to prevent conflict with the Dayton Hamvention (16-18 May 2014), which is the same weekend as the actual Armed Forces Day. The annual celebration features traditional military to amateur cross band communications SSB voice and Morse Code tests. These tests give Amateur Radio operators and Short Wave Listeners (SWL) an opportunity to demonstrate their individual technical skills, and to receive recognition from the appropriate military radio station for their proven expertise. From "American Minute" for May 19th: Army Day, Navy Day and Air Force Day were combined in 1949 to be Armed Forces Day, celebrated the 3RD SATURDAY IN MAY. Army Day formerly was the date the US entered World War I. Navy Day was President Theodore Roosevelt's birthday. Air Force Day was the day the War Department established a division of aeronautics. President Richard Nixon remarked on Armed Forces Day, MAY 19, 1973, at Norfolk Naval Base: “Men and women who wear the uniform of our country are supposed to salute the Commander in Chief...but on this day, I, as your Commander in Chief, salute you, each and every American who serves in our Army, our Navy, our Air Force, our Marine Corps, and our Coast Guard. Your courage, your steadfastness are the backbone of America's influence for peace around the world... We owe you...a debt of gratitude we can never fully repay... -to the more than 2 million men and women now serving in uniform; -to the millions of veterans who have returned to civilian life; -to tho ...

Jimmy Neher, of Vineland, places flags on veterans graves at Siloam Cemetery in Vineland on Armed Forces Day May 19. Neher, who was never in the military, spends much of his time helping veterans as president of Fire Base Nam Motorcycle Club. Everyone Has a Story: Vineland man honors veteran who adopted him by aiding many Fire Base Nam Motorcycle Club’s motto is “Veterans Helping Veterans.” But President Jimmy Neher, 57, had too many health problems as a young man to serve in the military. Now, he dedicates his time to helping veterans, he said, in honor of Coast Guard veteran Frank Figura, who rescued him from the foster care system when he was 11. Figura and his wife, Mary Ann, became Neher’s legal guardians when they were in their early 20s, and raised him in Vineland. “He was the best man you ever could have,” Neher said of Figura, a professional drummer who died in October in Florida at age 67. Neher, a traffic signal technician for Cumberland County, learned the drums from Figura and pla ...
The following was sent to the Bedford Gazette by myself to correct the paper and its' article in regard to Cumberland Valley marking Armed Forces Day/Memorial Day. Ms. Kohler, My wife and I are both residents of Bedford Valley and we both graduated from Bedford in the class of 1968. We both returned to this area after retiring. I served in the U.S. Coast Guard for four years active and then nine years reserve in the U.S. Navy. I also feel that my wife served since she was at home raising our family and standing by me to serve. In your article in today's Bedford Gazette, you stated that Memorial Day was created in 1949 as a single day observance for all services. You omitted two services, the Marines and the Coast Guard. For your information, the Coast Guard is the oldest sea going service of this country. Linda and I feel that the Coast Guard gets shorted many times in ceremonies. However it is a military branch of this great nation. An article on the history and current operations of the U.S. Coast G ...
Just got home from a wonderful Armed Forces Day concert put on at Gallivan Center by Channel 2..The music was by Joshua Tree, Voodoo Orchestra and the Coast Guard Band and Utah Choral...I was truly treated and am so proud to be an American, and I am honored by those who put their lives on the line so I can enjoy these freedoms. Well, I got my dates confused and thought tomorrow is Armed Forces Day. My belated salute to those who have served in the Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. We must remember that few people join the military in search of glory or to seek "action". Rather, they are most often ordinary citizens who feel they want to serve their relations in an extraordinary way. They may not always believe in the causes of those who order them into harm way, but they do believe in duty, honor and loyalty to their fellow citizens.

Day 4 4AM Walking group: A Tremendous turn out for the Armed Forces Day walk- a -thon. We started at 0340 as we were going all the way to Indiana. Being the ranking veteran I took "point" and Cindy followed me. For you that don't know "point" means at the front or leading, it's a risk I take willingly if there is dog poop or broken glass I'm the one that "gets" it. As the walk progressed I started having "flashbacks" of my Navy Days, some good some not so good such as the time I ate a Chittlin' that was not properly prepared. To remind myself of some of the hardships I experienced I walked right through the water in the gutter instead of stepping over it. As we marched we tried singing all the Armed Forces songs I know the Navy and Marines', and parts of the Army and Air Force that we filled in with "dahs and Hums", I don't recollect the Coast Guard tune but I imagined one in thier honor. God Bless And PROTECT OUR Armed Forces Men and Women!
