A note from Roger: Recently I received a copy of a letter sent from Guantanamo by Shaker Aamer, a UK resident, who has been detained in Gitmo without trial for 12 years. Shaker's letter was forwarded by Clive Stafford Smith, a man I have met, who tirelessly advocates the rule of law, and every human being's right to a fair trial. In his letter Shaker quotes some lyrics of mine and it was on those grounds that Clive forwarded the letter to me. I felt it important that Shaker's story is heard, and that Clive Stafford Smith’s and Reprieve's attachment to the law is Is recognized as being fundamentally important to us all. Love Roger Please visit: delivers justice and saves lives, from death row to Guantánamo Bay. We investigate, we litigate and we educate, working on the frontline, providing legal support to prisoners unable to pay for it themselves. We promote the rule of law around the world, and secure each person’s right to a fair trial. And in doing so, we save lives. Reprieve prioritises the cases ...
A note from lawyer Clive Stafford Smith who has just returned from another visit to Guantanamo Bay: The Worst of the Worst This has been my thirty-first visit to Guantánamo Bay, the notorious Cuban prison which, according to former US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, houses the “worst of the worst” terrorists in the world. It has been a long time coming, but I believe I have finally seen the worst of the worst. Sad to say, the current military administration at the prison is the very worst in the decade since I first came here. General John Kelly and Colonel John Bogdan, the officers in charge, seem intent on repeating every mistake made by their predecessors, adding some fresh ones of their own. The mistreatment of prisoners has been exemplified by General Kelly’s approach to the hunger strike. First, he said “the whole hunger strike thing was kind of a joke” really – none of the prisoners, he assured the media, was serious about it. I was aghast when I read this. I tried going a week w ...

Inmates at Guantanamo Bay prison have launched a new round of hunger strikes, says Shaker Aamer, a British inmate at the United States’ notorious facility in Cuba. In a phone call from the US military prison to Clive Stafford Smith, the director of legal action charity Reprieve, Aamer revealed that 29 detainees, including himself, are now on hunger strike
Tariq Aziz (1995-2012) - this courageous young boy is known very little in Pakistan. Why don't you know him? Because he couldn't drift a car down a mountain? Sad...so I'll tell you his story, in an attempt to wake your feeble minds up. Tariq Aziz and his 12-year old cousin Waheed Khan were murdered in a US terror drone strike in the Miranshah area North Waziristan one week after the anti-drone dharna lead by PTI and Human Rights Activists in 2012. Prior to his murder, 16-year old Tariq Aziz came to Islamabad and helped the Bureau of Investigative Journalism document civilian casualties caused by drone strikes. He spoke to numerous journalists and investigative reporters about the crimes happening in his native Waziristan. Human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith said: "I met this lad Tariq last week, and he was no more a terrorist than my mother". With his help, and the help of countless others, a moving documentary directed by US filmmaker Robert Greenwald and Brave New Foundation were able to highlight ...
1. What people think about Pakistan? I really don’t understand either. Different people have different sentiments about this country. I personally believe that the countryis gone crazy. (Your estimation are most welcome). 1.1 The Drone Strikes: The American use of UAVs to attack targetsin Pakistan began in 2004. Originally drones, such as the Predator, had beendesigned to be reconnaissance aircraft that linger over territory for longperiods of time and send back real-time imagery to whoever was controlling themfrom a remote location. But in the early 2000s, the idea surfaced to arm thePredator drone with missiles so that it could engage and destroy ground targetsas they presented themselves or to send the drones on specific missions to takeout particular targets. 1.2 Will Pakistan finally stand up against illegal US drone attacks? The Peshawar high court has delivered adamning verdict on the strikes. Pakistan must now move towards protecting thesecurity of its citizens Clive Stafford Smith www.guar ...

Historical Briefs: July, 2011 A Question of War Crimes: Human rights lawyers in the United Kingdom and Pakistan are seeking arrest warrants for a former CIA Legal Director for approving drone strikes that killed hundreds of non-combatants. John Rizzo, who served as the Acting General Consul for the CIA, has admitted approving of drone strikes inside Pakistan beginning 2004. “It’s basically a hit list” Rizzo said. “The Predator is a weapon of choice, but it could also be someone putting a bullet in your head.” Last year 42 drone strikes into Pakistan were approved. Under President Obama, strikes have quadrupled. “There has clearly been a crime here”, Clive Stafford Smith, a British human rights lawyer who is leading the arrest effort recently told al-Jazeera. ""An entire region is being terrorised by the constant threat of death from the skies," said Reprieve's director, Clive Stafford Smith. "Their way of life is collapsing: kids are too terrified to go to school, adults are afraid to attend weddings, funerals, business meeting or anything that involves gathering in groups." Some of the most harrowing personal testimonies involve those who have witnessed "double-tap" strikes. Researchers said people in Waziristan – the tribal area where most of the strikes take place – are "acutely aware of reports of the practice of follow-up strikes", and explained that the secondary strikes have discouraged ordinary civilians from coming to one another's rescue. One interviewee, describing a strike on his in-laws' home, said a follow-up missile killed would-be rescuers. "Other people came to check what had happened; they were looking for the children in the beds and then a second drone strike hit those people."
After being imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay for seven years, during which he was repeatedly interrogated and tortured, including being physically, sexually, and psychologically abused, Al Hajj was released without any charges held against him. Al Hajj, a journalist for the Al Jazeera network, was arrested in Pakistan in 2001 while on his way to do camerawork for the network concerning the war that had recently broken out in Afghanistan. It has been speculated by both Al Hajj’s lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, and Reporters Without Borders that the main reason that he was incarcerated for so long was due to the US Miliary’s desire to make him an informant against Al Jazeera, as most of Al Hajj’s interrogations consisted of American interrogators questioning him about the (Al Jazeera) network. While in Guantanamo, Al Hajj wrote a poem titled Humiliated in Shackles to his son Mohammad: When I heard pigeons cooing in the trees, Hot tears covered my face. When the lark chirped, my thoughts composed A message f ...

Syed, can you please tell me if this is true.
The nice thing about this graphic is that it shows that we are not targeting people right across the border, that make quick incursions into Afghanistan on foot, but way across into Pakistan where there is no clear imminent danger to the US or its soldiers. I say imminent danger, because that is one of the excuses given for us killing all these people. They posed an imminent danger to us all. I would love to wake and find that i have been dreaming, and these acts were not done in my name. That we really lived in a just society in which those that authorize these acts would be held accountable, and that would definitely include Barack.
Obama's "war on women" is really Obama's war on children.
It rings very, very hallow Mr. Obama when we lament those crazy people taking innocent lives in movie theaters and yet are quite alright taking innocent lives, especially in other countries. Pro 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin [is] a reproach to any people.
As allies and partners with the US in this endless war we should all be ashamed at what we are doing to these people. We're so quick to support the activities of people like the Machine Gun Preacher because he protects children yet we carry out atrocities like this on a regular basis. Makes me sick to my stomach.
I know this but I'm still going to vote for Obama because I'm anti war
