"One lesson from this confluence of scandals is, as Glenn Reynolds writes, that everyone should realize why we should not put so much faith in government. And Chris Cillizza hits the same theme. The cumulative weight of the series of stories, of course, is, potentially, the most dangerous thing of all for the Obama Administration. Group Benghazi, the IRS and the AP into a single narrative and it reads something like this: The government knows better than you. As a result, the government can do whatever it likes. And yet we're supposed to be copacetic with this same government managing our health care."

It's started! And our Australian friends are upset about (only) a 9 month mational campaign this year. Here are the first rankings of potential GOP presidential nominees by Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post: 10. John Thune: The South Dakota senator looks the part of a presidential candidate — tall, dark, handsome — and has a record that conservatives love but isn’t scary to the party establishment. The issue for Thune is whether he wants it badly enough. He had a golden opportunity to get into the 2012 race as a major contender and, oddly, passed. As the Post’s Dan Balz wrote at the time, Thune’s “no” to 2012 could well have a lingering impact on his chances in 2016. 9. Rob Portman: He doesn’t bring the glitz and glamour of some of the other names of this list, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t include the Ohio senator. His experience as White House budget director makes him a credible voice on economic matters, and his current gig as National Republican Senatorial Committee vice chai ...

Chris Cillizza wrote an excellent column in the Post today about where Sarah Palin went wrong. After her disastrous interview with Katie Couric, she decided to attack the "gotcha" media and turning on almost everybody. "She embraced a sort of anti-intellectualism in which her lack of knowledge about foreign affairs was unimportant because it was just part of a test by a media that wanted to destroy her." "In her own mind, she became bigger than politics, and she began to focus much more on the celebrity side of her persona...GOP fundraisers stopped asking her to be involved, because the bang they got from her name being on the invite didn't make up for the chaos her and her entourage guaranteed." Well put.

R.I.P. Richard Ben Cramer, author of best political junkie presidential campaign book ever, ``What it Takes.'' He also wrote a great bio of Joe DiMaggio and a wonderful Esquire profile of Teddy Ballgame.

This might be the be the best analogy I've read for the republican debt ceiling / I'll blow up the world if you don't give me what I want strategy...and how insane it is that the media is treating this GOP murder-suicide threat as just another step in the DC routine: And since the "fiscal cliff" was "averted" and the media has shifted focus to the next big battle, discussion of the debt ceiling dead-enders and their future plans has only gotten more blithe and unconcerned. MacGillis provides a fine example of what's been steeping in the Beltway brain since New Years Day -- this passage from the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza that treats debt-ceiling hostage taking as a perfectly natural and polite thing to do, never registering even a scintilla of shock over the implication of using the threat to tank the global economy as a bargaining tactic: "Make no mistake: No deal on the fiscal cliff was a political loser for Republicans; this is an issue they needed to get off the table in order to find better pol ...

I posted this as a comment on Chris Cillizza's post but I feel it's worth saying to everyone: I'm no fan of unexamined horse-race narratives, but it's more complicated than just "pitching a narrative." It's part of the objectivity trap in which journalists feel obligated to give "both sides" or risk appearing biased. The dichotomy of an election creates a zero-sum circumstance where the only way to maintain detachment is to portray it as an unresolved situation.

Apparently blinded by their desire to see Barack Obama re-elected, hosts at MSNBC attacked Mitt Romney for collecting food and supplies for victims of Hurricane Sandy at a rally in Kettering, Ohio, on Tuesday. Andrea Mitchell and Martin Bashir both attacked Romney, claiming that the GOP nominee "violated" Red Cross guidelines for assistance. "We checked with the Red Cross. The Red Cross said, while they're always grateful for donations, that this is not what they need or want. They always tell people, ‘please donate money, because we have our own packagers, wholesalers' — they have their own distribution system," Mitchell said. MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell slams Romney for providing hurricane relief. Mitchell and her guest, the Washington Post's Chris Cillizza, also claimed that the assistance wasn't needed in Ohio, but failed to report that the assistance was actually slated for New Jersey, even though parts of Ohio had been affected by the storm.

For the third straight day, it reports that Mitt Romney has a one-point lead over Barack Obama, 49/48 — but its internals tell a different story. And one reason for that is its shifting sample, which has gotten significantly more Democratic. The Real Reason The Chicago Teacher's Strike Is Bad News For Obama Chris Cillizza in his WaPo politics column the Fix looks at the Chicago teachers strike and writers that the primary reason it's bad for President Obama's campaign is the associations with the president's adopted hometown and his ex-chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, and Emanuel being distracted from fundraising for the chief pro-Obama PAC, Priorities USA. He misses the main reason entirely. What's going on with the Chicago teacher's union is a story that's occurred nation-wide for years. What people see is a greedy and unprincipled public employee union holding up the tax payers once again with the help of the Democrat they elected to office. And this is happening right after they saw a convention that featured a number of public employee functionaries speaking loudly and in some cases arrogantly about their 'rights' , with those sentiments being echoed by a number of Democrat politicians, including the president. Bozell: The Media Built That for Obama By Brent Bozell August 8, 2012 11:30 am On Aug. 5, Chris Cillizza at The Washington Post announced he was playing with a "somewhat controversial idea" that Mitt Romney should be the favorite to win the presidential election. Debatable, maybe. But controversial? Well, yes. It violates the pro-Obama mandate of our national press corps. The usual political measures look terrible for Obama, he noted. "The unemployment rate has been over 8 percent for 42 straight months, a streak unparalleled in American history." Obama must win despite the crippled economy -- the most important issue for the voters. The numbers are political red alerts. The Post's polling in July showed 44 percent approved of how Obama was dealing with the economy, while 54 percent disapproved, and 41 strongly disapproved of the job he is doing on the economy, while only 21 percent strongly approved. Six in 10 said the economy was getting worse, not better, in a Gallup poll. And now the unthinkable: His ...

If you’re the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza, the answer to this ridiculous question is yes. Great morning FB Friends! Eric Odom comes thru again with up-to-the-minute news and views of the great obama coverup! But their ( liberal pundits ) favorite... is the race card! Race baiting is the last refuge of an incompetent Party with an incompetent president, both of which are destroying this country. I mean, good grief, calling him “cool” is now racist? Does that mean the mostly liberal media is now racist? Hyper-leftist Chris Cillizza said that Barack Obama is cool.. Mitt Romney is not.note to chris cillizza. screw you! Throughout the 2008 election we were told that obama was cool, while John McCain was an old fuddy duddy. obama has struggled during his first term because he’s the most incompetent president ever. He was completely unprepared to be president. He had Democrat control of Congress during his first two years and managed to put in place policies that completely stopped any economic recovery. He’s annoyed our allies and damaged our international credibility. He seems to enjoy ...
Just heard Chris Cillizza on Hardball discussing, rather offhandedly, how much better Clinton is at campaigning than Obama. No one objected. Imagine if anyone had asserted such a thing in 2007 or 2008. In the 2008 campaign, Clinton couldn't get a foothold while on the campaign trail for Hillary. There was definitely some success among middle Americans, but he was out-campaigned by Team Obama. Handily. Now we're discussing how Clinton is just a more better campaigner than Obama, and that's why Obama needs Clinton. My how the mighty have fallen.
