A scorecard on hunger in Africa recently revealed that Nigeria has the highest number of hungry people in West Africa, as about 12.1 million people are hungry or under nourished in the country. According to the latest 2014 Africa Multiple Indicator Scorecard on Hunger and Food Security. The scorecard released on Thursday, January 30, by Africa Health, Human and Social Development Information Service (Afri-Dev.Info) and Africa Coalition on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, ahead of the African Union Summit/Assembly of Heads of State with Agriculture and Food Security theme also shows that Nigeria, with 33 points out of 100, is placed a distant 86th country globally, and 14th in Africa on the global food security index. The same rating has also shown that Ghana is the most food-secure country in West Africa with 45.4 points out of 100 to rank 67 globally and number 6 in Africa. Although the food security situation is worst in the Horn of Africa/East Africa which has four out of the five African countries ...
How to make sure that girls value themselves highly during the years of extreme self-doubt and social pressures Most parents with a daughter get a little obsessed with the concept of self-esteem, and with good reason. Recent research shows that girls, particularly aged 11 to 14, are facing unprecedented threats to their confidence from our culture of celebrity and perfection — both in the looks and academic spheres — which is intensified by the merciless magnifying-glass of social media. A study from the Institute of Child Health and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine revealed that one third of girls aged 13 were upset or distressed about their weight — and more than one in ten suffered “intense worry”. Perhaps that’s no surprise when there are apps such as the one encouraging girls to perform plastic surgery on a cartoon figure with virtual scalpels and syringes, which was withdrawn from iTunes recently. Another survey showed that one in three girls aged 11 to 14 had given up swim ...

Mama Peace Woman of war By Femi Macaulay Nigerians must be anxious to find out whether the country’s First Lady Patience Jonathan’s publicised change of name will make any difference not only to her public conduct but also to public perception of her personality. Perhaps under pressure from “social anxiety,” which is unsurprising in the light of her markedly unflattering public image, Mrs. Jonathan announced her new name to a probably bemused audience at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The occasion was the December 13 launch of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme Maternal and Child Health (SURE –P MCH) otherwise known as MAMA Project. According to her, “My name is no more Patience but now Mama Peace because I believe that without peace, there will be no more women, no more children and no more health sector. Without peace, the international community will be afraid to come and invest in our country.” It looks like Mrs. Jonathan recently experienced an awaken ...

TOPIC HOUR: What about food allergies? If allergies run in your family, then it's worth talking to your GP or child health nurse for their advice before starting on solid foods. It may be worth trying foods that are most likely to cause a reaction one at a time. That way you can see how your baby gets on, and isolate any trigger foods. Start with a very small amount, and don't give any of them to your baby before he's six months old. Foods to introduce one at a time are: grains, such as wheat, rye, barley and oats, that contain gluten fish and shellfish citrus fruits nut butters cow's milk soy products

More reason to not smoke when pregnant. Smoking During Pregnancy Ups Risk of Bipolar Illness in Kids By RICK NAUERT PHD Senior News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on October 3, 2013 A new study finds a link between smoking during pregnancy and increased risk for developing bipolar disorder (BD) in adult children. Researchers evaluated the offspring of a large cohort of pregnant women who participated in the Child Health and Development Study (CHDS) from 1959-1966. The study was based on 79 cases and 654 comparison subjects. Maternal smoking during pregnancy was associated with a twofold increased risk of BD in their offspring. Expert are aware that smoking during pregnancy contributes to significant problems in utero and following birth, including low birth weight and attentional difficulties. However, this is the first study to suggest an association between prenatal tobacco exposure and the BD, say the authors. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a serious psychiatric illness marked by significant shift ...
So after a 30 minute conversation nerding out with my 86 (I think?) year old grammie about epidemiological studies, poverty, racial inequities, epigenetics and what sorts of studies that field is based on, I find out that after she got finished her master's coursework from Johns Hopkins in epidemiology (minus the final thesis, because she "didn't want to"), she worked for the Harvard School of Public Health in the Maternal and Child Health division in the 40's, designing longitudinal studies and collecting data on height and weight of adolescents to establish what the national healthy standards were. Holy cow, I always knew my grandmother was amazing, but I had NO IDEA she did all that!

Our three children who conquered death in June 2013. BRIEF REPORT ON YESU BACKGROUND & TRUST LIFE:- Yesu’s family is from Ginigera, Koppal District, Karnataka. Yesu’s father died due to AIDS. Coming to know about the Ministry of Calvary Chapel Trust, Yesu’s mother, Neelamma came and approached the Trust along with 3 of her sons in 2007. (Name of children: Anthony, Stanley and Yesu). Later, his mother became very sick and she passed away. The Trust took custody of the three children who were now orphaned in February 2011. Yesu (Reg No. 861/11) was 11 years old when he was admitted in the Trust. Unfortunately, Yesu was infected with HIV virus from birth. Hence, he found it extremely difficult to pursue his academic studies because of his physical conditions. He was frequently admitted in the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health for various sicknesses. Many occasions, doctors lost hope, but miraculously he survived. But the atmosphere in the Home of Hope made him happy and was liked by fellow ...
University of Sydney researchers have found alarmingly low rates of vaccination against chicken pox and influenza in children hospitalised for these diseases. The Paediatric Active Enhanced Disease Surveillance (PAEDS) study, published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health, found that out of 133 children hospitalised for complications of chicken pox infection from 2007 to 2010, only 16 had been vaccinated. In the PAEDS study, nurses collected hospitalisation data from the Children's Hospital at Westmead, Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Women and Children's Hospital, Adelaide and Princess Margaret Hospital, Perth. Paper senior author Professor Elizabeth Elliott from Sydney Medical School said the PAEDS study provides important, previously unavailable data on the number of children hospitalised from vaccine-preventable diseases and adverse events resulting from vaccination. “We believe our research will inform public health policy, clinical practice and community confidence and has the pot ...

Deeper concerns. Often, a fiery argument is really about something other than the event that ignited it. For example, a dispute that starts with “You’re always late!” may not be about the need for punctuality but about one spouse feeling that he or she has been treated inconsiderately. Whatever the cause, frequent arguing can adversely affect your health and can even be a predictor of eventual divorce. How, then, can you stop arguing? WHAT YOU CAN DO A key to preventing arguments is identifying the underlying issues that fuel them. When things are calm, try the following exercise with your spouse. 1. On separate sheets of paper, each of you should write down the topic of a recent argument. For example, a husband might write, “You spent the whole day with your friends and didn’t call me to tell me where you were.” A wife might write, “You got upset because I spent time with my friends.” 2. With an open mind, discuss the following: Was the matter really that serious? Could it have been overl ...
Trust God with what you have Jeremiah 17:7-8 (NKJV) 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. 8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. When we trust in the Lord we are sure of the results. The Bible tells us that God does not change and in the verse above we are evergreen, the son does change our colour and drought does not affect us. Our hope is the Lord whose promises are yes and to us amen. When we trust on God our trust is based in his word and God respects his word. When he creates and decree it become. But man look at circumstances and are likely to dissappoint us. In God if we ask for food he provides in abundance, he gives a job. When we ask for health, he gives us eternal life through salvation. To trust God by faith we set ourselves for joy and love for he gives .. ...

My young brother's first born has been having satanic attacks since January 2013. This boy happens to be the first born grand child and favorite to the old man we just buried today in Shimabala. Well he has been seeing the step grand mother ( a very powerful business lady) in black clothes and his state after such visions is describable..he gets disconnected from life, its not things & you cant like it! Pray bands, elders and Pastors have tried, but the boy's health keeps on worsening!!! On Thursday, the boy 8years woke up around 04hrs & told the father who is my brother that ' dady, grandpa has died'. True the boy's spiritual vision, my brother's wife called at 07hrs for the same information. On Friday the satanic forces indicated to the boy that he needed to see the late grand father blood for him to get better or the boy will die soon! This morning the boy warned us that we were going to have an accident because he was not needed at the gravel site in Shimabala and for sure we escape a fatal accid ...

I hope nothing but the best for you... Your health and your life... Your there, I'm here... I guess its right... I have no regrets... Except for the things I didn't say... But if I had told you straight up... Would it have worked out anyway... Take care of our little boi. My little ray of sunshine... My only hope at this point is that maybe one day he could be mine. I know I got allot to prove and even then it's a long shot... but if I want to ever see my child what other choice do I got?... From this point on... I am no longer gone. Instead I will hold my head high. I will look you in the eye. And Tell you I love you. Till the day that I die.

We have followed a series of Tauromaquia events on your islands, reflecting a violent disposition of your islanders towards animals. We get an image of a society that is devoted to scoring a Guiness-book record on bullfight-lovers and bull-killings per capita of your population. Given this disturbing image of unlimited violence we are not surprised to hear that you are organizing a bullfight for children on June 26. ...

Mom! Dad! I think I might be pregnant…….. With recent news of teenagers and young adults putting their lives at risk by hiding pregnancies and doing deliveries without proper healthcare, I think this advice might come handy. Teenagers in secondary schools and universities find themselves in these situations, the deed has been done; endangering your life and that of the baby might not be next right action. Telling your parents; remember they are your parents and they love you. Sure, it’s a difficult thing to tell them but rather than risk your life its best you tell them first. First rule is you can never tell how they will react… Learning that you’re pregnant might leave you confused, scared, or shocked by the news. You’re thinking your parents will kill you (literally) but of course since they love you and think you are still a child yourself. No matter how they will receive this information, it is important you tell them first. Do your homework by knowing and understanding your parents' per ...
There was tree Norns who lived at the well Urd. Their names were Urd “past”, Verdani “present” and Skuld “future” The three Norns was the goddesses of fate. They spent most of their time spinning the threads of life, deciding the fate of every human, animal and every god. Whenever a child was born, the Norns spun the fate of the child in their threads. The three Norns would every morning start the day by placing a rooster at the top of Yggdrasil. The bragging of the rooster would work as a wakeup call for all humans and gods. Every day the Norns would also carry water from Urd’s well, and poured it over Yggdrasil. The water from the well was of vital importance to keep the tree green and healthy. The Norns was very respected in Viking times, it was quite common to serve a woman who had just given birth to a child some porridge, they called this porridge for “Norn porridge” The Vikings believed the Norns were always nearby whenever a child was born. The porridge was considered an offering ...

Francis breaks the mould by not attending Vatican concert Why Pope Francis did not attend yesterday's concert in the Vatican's Paul VI Hall andrea tornielli (vatican insider)The desolately empty white papal throne that stood in the middle of the Paul VI Hall describes what has gone on in the Vatican, better than any words could have done. Until about a week ago, this image could have been seen as a symbol of Benedict XVI’s resignation and of the sede vacante. But yesterday, it became representative of the Pope’s last-minute decision to miss a concert because something urgent had come up. This is a Pope who sees his work on the dossiers presented to him and the discussions he is engaged in regarding the structure of the Roman Curia, as more important than half an hour’s relaxation listening to good music. Music he has been passionate about ever since he was a child, when he would listen to the radio with his mother and siblings. Bergoglio’s aversion to worldliness is common knowledge and he has tri ...
Though death has stopped the beat of highlife singer, Fatai Olagunju, popularly known as Rolling Dollar, his family wants his fans to keep the tempo going, writes GBENGA ADENIJI The location was the Millennium Estate, Oko-Oba, Agege, Lagos residence of deceased highlife singer, Fatai Olagunju, otherwise called Rolling Dollar. His two wives, Zainab and Serifat, some of his children including Sikiru-who is the singer’s 50-year-old first son, wore a pensive mood as our correspondent walked into their home. It was evident from their faces that they were yet to come to terms with the reality of the death of the 86-year-old songbird, Rolling Dollar, who breathed his last on June 12, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the acclaimed “fairest and freest” election in Nigeria. The musician shot to stardom a few years back via a successful album, Won Kere si Number Wa. But despite his fame, the family is worried about the education of his younger children. One of the children, Jamiu, told our correspondent ...

A United Nations human rights body accused Israeli forces on Thursday of mistreating Palestinian children, including by torturing those in custody and using others as human shields. Palestinian children in the Gaza and the West Bank, captured by Israel in the 1967 war, are routinely denied registration of their birth and access to health care, decent schools and clean water, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child said. “Palestinian children arrested by (Israeli) military and police are systematically subject to degrading treatment, and often to acts of torture, are interrogated in Hebrew, a language they did not understand, and sign confessions in Hebrew in order to be released,” it said in a report.
Any arguments or unhelpful comments will be deleted. Just looking for a bit of support really around the very sensitive topic of breast feeding. I take my hat off to ladies that breast feed and I think it's fab, natural and I'm aware of all the pro's. However I just don't feel like its for me and I'm getting a bit down/annoyed at ppl turning their noses up when they ask why Im not breast feeding and I simply say its just a personal choice. Surely some other mums to be feel the same??

Child Rights: Analysis of Child Abuse and Strategies for its Elimination:--- The question of the rights of children in the modern times has emerged as one of the most vibrant issues in contemporary human rights discussions. National and international initiatives have been underway to understand and provide solutions with far reaching affects. Notable among which has been the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, on 20 November 1989, the first legally binding code of child rights in 54 articles setting standards for the well being of children at different stages of their development. But the fact remains that children remain a part of the disadvantaged minority group even today as far as realization of human rights and social justice are concerned. This is primarily because children are generally physically, mentally and economically defenceless. In this age of globalization the care of children has completely taken a backseat, thus, affecting entir ...
God is calling for a little war, if you will, in this passage. He orders a man in linen to put a mark on those who are deemed faithful to the Law. All others are slain. Notice it says, in paraphrase if you will, "Spare no one." WOW! Remember the story in Exodus where the Lord was sending out the plagues on the people of Egypt? One of those plagues was the death of the firstborn, done by the Angel of Death. The wicked were the Egyptians. Notice the "mark" in that plague in Exodus: The blood of the lamb. A mark was given to Cain after killing his brother, even though Cain was doomed for death, for sin, God kept him alive to continue to human race. Cain's family flourished but according to godward.org, his family was wiped by the Flood in Genesis. Do you have a mark of sin, like Cain did? Physically unseen, but maybe you do. Who marked you? God did. God sees you as a wicked, wretched sinner whose spirit/soul is doomed to torment in *** unless you repent. Know now that there are marks in Revelation that p . ...
Parents vs Teachers: The Who, What, Why & How To End It Parents and teachers are supposed to work together to educate children and foster their development. It seems as though this relationship in many cities has taken a turn for the worse. THE WHO: Parents created and gave birth to the children. They are the child's first educators. Parents know their children well and have experienced all of the highs and lows in their lives before sending them to school. They are the caretakers every minute of the day that the children are not in school. The parents are ultimately responsible for the health and well-being of the children. Teachers are trained to educate children. They spend at least 6 hours a day with children. Your child's teacher gets to know them really well. Teachers often see a different side of children than their parents experience. THE WHAT: There appears to be a war between parents and teachers these days. More and more parents are becoming adversarial towards teachers. Parents are more vocal ...

First of all, NOBODY but your Dr can tell you, for certain, that you're pregnant. Also you cannot get pregnant on your period. Idc if ur mom, ur gma or ur ob said u got pregnant on ur period, its not possible! Chances are you miscalculated your ovulation dates. Sorry, but if you are having your period or just had ur period, YOU ARE NOT NOR ARE YOU GETTING PREGNANT, no matter how badly you make yourself believe it. Every woman is 2 weeks pregnant. You conceive when you ovulate, which is 2 weeks after your period, however how far along you are is determined by the first day of your last period. OMG. Just got the pleasure of sitting next to a young 94 year old man on the bench in front of the water fountain next to the Museum at lunch! He had a towel with him and said his friends (one in his 70's the other in his 80's) brought him. They were getting ready to play in the fountain! A man after my own heart! I love playing in the water fountains. He said the key to staying young is to play and have fun. Act like a child and your life will shine with love and health. My guardian angel came to visit me. that's why I play in the rain, play in the fountains, watch kid movies, act goofy, talk baby talk to my grandkids and tease and tease and I love to color and play with stickers! yes, thank you new friend, you renwed my faith in acting like I'm 5!
