Happy birthday to the awesome bassist Stanley Clarke (born June 30, 1951) an American jazz musician and composer known for his innovative and influential work on double bass and electric bass as well as for his numerous film and television scores. He is best known for his work with the fusion band Return To Forever, and his role as a bandleader in several trios and ensembles. Clarke was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was introduced to the bass as a schoolboy when he arrived late on the day instruments were distributed to students and acoustic bass was one of the few remaining selections. He is a graduate of Roxborough High School in Philadelphia. Having graduated from the Philadelphia Musical Academy, (which was absorbed into the University of the Arts in 1985), he moved to New York City in 1971 and began working with famous bandleaders and musicians including Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Gato Barbieri, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Pharoah Sanders, Gil Evans and Stan Getz. Happy Birthday to Stanley Clarke , born today in 1951 - Jazz bassist extraordinaire! I've had the pleasure of working with Stanley Clarke on several projects, including the Grammy Award winning "Forever" album, with Chick Corea and Lenny White. Amazing musicianship!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Stanley Clarke! Bassist Stanley Clarke was barely out of his teens when he exploded into the jazz world in 1971. Fresh out of the Philadelphia Academy of Music, he arrived in New York City and immediately landed jobs with famous bandleaders such as Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Pharaoh Saunders, Gil Evans, Stan Getz and a budding young pianist-composer named Chick Corea. All of these m...usicians immediately recognized Clarke’s ferocious dexterity and complete musicality on the acoustic bass. Not only was he an expert at crafting bass lines and functioning as a timekeeper – in keeping with his instrument’s traditional role – but the young prodigy also possessed a sense of lyricism and melody distilled from his bass heroes Charles Mingus, Scott LaFaro and others, as well as non-bass players like John Coltrane. Clarke envisioned the bass as a viable, melodic solo instrument positioned at the front of the stage rather than in a background role, and he was uni ...

Quick question: If I was to choose doing a drum cover video between Misery Business or Ignorance by Paramore, which would you guys prefer? I know that those songs are so mid-2000's, but I was thinking of covering anyone that I like, regardless of how "fresh" they are or are not. I'd like to do stuff ranging from Gordon Goodwin to The Beatles to Art Blakey to Ingrid Michaelson to Chick Corea to Snarky Puppy to Tito Puente to Yellowjackets [I could go on if you like].

Reviewed in the Los Angeles Times (“Miles Davis Plays in Concert at UCLA,” by Leonard Feather, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1968, Part IV, p. 15): The Miles Davis Quintet filled Royce Hall to capacity Saturday night in a “Jazz at UCLA” concert that is not likely to be surpassed this season by any other group that works at this high level of abstraction. Two surprises marked the presentation. Herbie Hancock, Davis’ pianist since 1963, quit two weeks ago and has been replaced by Chick Corea, best known for his work with Herbie Mann and Stan Getz. Ron Carter, a pillar of power in the quintet’s albums for the past five years, also was missing. The new bassist is a youthful Englishman, Dave Holland. These two major changes have affected the group less than one might have expected. The Debussy-like lyricism of Hancock may seem to be irreplaceable, yet there’s evidence already that Corea is probing in the same direction. In this new and more challenging context, he drew on inner reserves of creative strength t ...

Buika (“BWEE-kah”) was born María Concepción Balboa Buika to parents who came to Spain from Equatorial Guinea as political exiles, They were the only black residents in one of Palma de Mallorca’s poor neighborhoods. She found a second home among the community of Gypsy families, finding in flamenco’s individualistic spirit a path to self-acceptance. Buika has emerged as a true innovator, a must-see artist among jazz aficionados. Her evident African roots and her cosmopolitanism, developed in clubs in Spain and Americanized during a surreal stint in Las Vegas as a Tina Turner impersonator, explain Buika’s rare self-possession. Buika is simply one of those rare and wonderful “one listen” artists. It’s a quality that struck the renowned filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, who cast her in The Skin I Live In, and jazz leged Chick Corea, who featured Buika as a special guest during an epic run at the Blue Note. On her new release, La Noche Más Larga, Buika moves beyond her Spanish language borders to ...

To All of Our Fans! Please see below Al Di Meola's official statement about Paco de Lucia. Posted by Rose/Team Di Meola Date: 26.02.2014. ‘This morning I received shocking news before the international news became aware that my dear friend and major guitar innovator Paco De Lucia had passed away. His manager called me immediately and the shock for me was incredibly devastating as Paco and I had an incredible history and warm friendship that I will always cherish! Paco de Lucia was viewed in my mind and the world of flamenco as the most important of the newer generations of guitarists embodying the most advanced flamenco approach the world had ever known. While I was part of Chick Corea's Return To Forever at 19 years of age we toured Spain and it was there that the buzz about him prompted my research by buying several recordings of his. It was then I saw the potential of our collaborating one day.His technique far surpassed any other in that realm of flamenco type players and I envisioned an amazing co ...

Tonight he'll be performing that seminal recording in its entirety with young phenom drummer Mike Mitchell. Mike Mitchell has been playing the drums for as long as he can remember. Barely 19 years old and fresh out of high school, he's already made a name for himself by performing constantly in his hometown of Dallas and regularly touring internationally with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Ensemble. ...

For many years on the Wolfman Jack TV Shows, I gave Young Chang (the makers of Kurzweil), rolling credits on the shows. They supplied me with Keyboards and pianos for more than 15 years. On the evening of the last Wolfman Jack show, I had told Billy Preston, who as a guest, that they had sent me a white grand piano as a gift for my efforts over the years. He told me "white piano! Give to Charity and take it off your taxes". I began to take out the keys and Fedex them to the great keyboard player around the world. It cost over $6000 to send and return the 52 white keys. Keys signed by everyone from Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock in Jazz, to Floyd Kramer and Mickey Gilley in Country, Stevie Wonder gave me a thumb print, Billy Joel, Elton John, Joni Mitchell. I was asked by Give Kids the world to sign. I am between Paul McCartney and Victor Borge. Currently the piano resides in the John Lennon Room at Hard Rock Live Orlando. In 1992 I put together The Celebrity Keyboard Concert also to benefit Give Kids the ...
Tomorrow I will be teaching a lesson on stride piano. There are many variations of this. My piano teacher was Thomas Gallant who was the head of the Phillips Exeter Academy Jazz Program and he loved the style of Art Tatum. I will discuss how to handle 10th chords when your hands are too small. I use stride piano occasionally, but I favor more modern players such as Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson, along with great artists such as Chick Corea and Horace Silver. All of them are worth looking up on YouTube.
Really special session going down today. In studio with Steve, Pino and the one and only Chick Corea playing some wide open …
Okay, I caved. Here are my 12 records that have stayed with me in no particular order. Very tough to leave out many of my favorite artists but the question was very specific to the recordings. Mark McLean, George Taylor, & Rob Sheridan, you inspired me to do this: 1) Off the Wall – Michael Jackson – (1979) 2) The Power Station – The Power Station (1985) 3) Nothing Like the Sun – Sting (1987) 4) Running in the Family – Level 42 (1987) 5) Light Years – Chick Corea and the Elektric Band (1987) 6) 5150 – Van Halen (1986) 7) Phil Collins – ...But Seriously (1989) 8) Lenny Kravitz – 5 (1998) 9) Living Colour – Vivid (1988) 10) Living Colour – Time’s Up (1990) 11) A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi Trio (1965) 12) The Bee Gees, Best of (1990)
So recently Gabriella Marie said she wanted to listen to some Jazz. Remembering I had bought a Herbie Hancock vinyl, I took it out of its sheath and put it on. It was an evening of Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, a live concert with two incredible musicians. That record is now one of my favorites and has changed the way I will forever think about the piano.
Sean and I went to Newbury Comics today- I bought him a couple of cd's as an unexpected reward for his academic excellence. But I was like a kid in a candy store at their new rack of cheap cd's of rarely seen titles. Couldn't resist: 1. The Byrds "Ballad of Easy Rider". Awesome. An instant desert island disc. It's the cowboy hippy stuff I love without the useless psychedelia. If you like B-bending telecaster twangin', this is the stuff. 2. John McLaughlin "Electric Guitarist". Great. Carlos Santana does a guest spot and plays one of his finest solos 3. Captain Beefheart "The Mirror Man Sessions". Haven't listened yet 4. Miles Davis "Water Babies"- OK. Chick Corea plays on it too, and it doesn't sound like Scientology music like much of his contributions often do 5. Steven Stills "Illegal Stills" sounds good, but will take a few listens probably to let the tunes sink in. That may or may not ever happen, but I did listen once. 6. Jethro Tull "Extended Versions". As a Tull-head, I'll prolly like it. I've bou ...
8/28/2011 Heritage THE BRAND COMES INTO PLAY The problem was evident to anyone who really listened to recorded music: Recordings rarely, if ever, lived up to the original performance. To some, that didn’t matter. To others, it mattered more than anything. This is the story of the Mark Levinson brand. Born in 1946, Mark Levinson was a music and electronics prodigy whose name lives on through a range of ultra-precision audio components. He grew up in the Boston area and later moved to New Haven, Connecticut. Music, particularly jazz, quickly became the focus in his early life, and before the age of 20 he was playing double bass or trumpet with the likes of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Chick Corea. Rather than attending college, Levinson decided to tour Europe while playing bass with pianist Paul Bley. In his early twenties, Levinson merged his musical and technical talents as he reportedly created the sound mixer used onstage during the legendary Woodstock Music Festival. This experience, coupled with ...

Stan Getz "Captain Marvel" (1972) AMG Review by Thom Jurek [-] One of the more remarkable aspects of Stan Getz's 1972 masterpiece is just how organic he was able to keep the sound. The band surrounding Getz on this Columbia date was led by Chick Corea with his Return To Forever (electric) bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Tony Williams, and Brazilian master percussionist Airto. With the exception of Clarke, all the rest had played with Miles Davis in his then-experimental electric bands. Corea's Return To Forever was just getting itself off the fusion ground, while Williams had been with John McLaughlin and Larry Young in Lifetime on top of his experience with Davis. But make no mistake, this is a Stan Getz record, his gorgeous tenor tone furiously and fluidly playing through all of Corea's difficult changes on Corea's Latin carnival jam, "La Fiesta," and shapeshifting his way through mode changes on "Five Hundred Miles High." The nucleus for the bedrock of Return To Forever was in the Getz laboratory of e ...

urther celebrating john mclaughlin's birthday: john mclaughlin (guitar) on Miles Davis' tribute to jack johnson. Listen to the opening bass line and groove and you will hear where jeff beck got freeway jam from! Jack Johnson was a turning point in Davis' career and has since been viewed as one of his greatest works. Davis, who wanted to put together what he called "the greatest rock and roll band you have ever heard," recorded with a line-up featuring guitarists John McLaughlin and Sonny Sharrock, keyboardists Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, clarinetist Bennie Maupin, and drummers Jack Dejohnette and Billy Cobham. The album's two tracks were drawn from one recording session on April 7 and edited together with recordings from February 1970 by producer Teo Macero. The music reflected Davis' interest in the eclectic jazz fusion of the time, but also foreshadowed the hard-edged funk that would fascinate him in the next few years. The first major recording session for the album, which took place on April 7, 19 ...
Who saw the Kennedy Center Honors? What a fantastic show. THREE of the honorees are artists that I have worked with. It was so good to see them getting this award: Carlos Santana (Hard Rock Live), Herbie Hancock (Gershwin's World, Possibilities), and Billy Joel (River of Dreams, 2000 Years Live NY Eve Album) My favorite moment was Garth Brooks singing "Goodnight Saigon" with all of the Vietnam Vets on stage (wow!). Another was Snoop Dogg making people dance in their seats - great performance. Another highlight was Rufus Wainwright. Besides the honorees, I have been fortunate to work with others that were on the show: Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard, Vinnie Colaiuta, Snoop Dogg, Tony Bennett, and Garth Brooks. Congratulations to all of the honorees!

Amnesia by Chick Corea Elektric Band on Eye of the Beholder
A nice blend of standards. Heard a great riff on Miles Davis's "So What?" Chick Corea's "Spain" stands out. I'm impressed.
"A quality; an unexplainable, spiritual quality that creative people have, that is just inspiring, and there's no way to really describe it, except that you feel invigorated, and you want to create yourself. The arts, I feel in general, are the last bastion of that on planet Earth anyway. It's like a pinhole left on planet Earth -- of the arts, which is the idea of creativity, which is the idea of the use of the imagination in order to make up things that you present to other people, for only the purpose of wanting them to experience it. And experience the pleasure of it." - Chick Corea
ONE MY GREAT GREAT FAVORITES.CHICK COREA "Quartet 1" ...this is..."AFTER HOURS" !!!.on the sax...mister Michael Brecker !

I wanted to share with you a review of Turn It Up ( the guide to being a sight reading expert( that just came in from Greek Heavy metal guitarist/ instructor Orestis Nalmpantis . Orestis is the guitarist with the band SARISSA. This review and others Ive gotten make me really really proud. Orestis can be found at guitar players now days learn guitar through the internet, YouTube and tabs. It’s actually the fastest and easiest way to learn the instrument. But the truth is that it’s not the most musical one. Also, Professional guitar players today, completely underestimate the importance of music theory and sight reading because they think it’s useless or boring and difficult. Do you belong in any of those 2 groups? If so Turn It Up is the perfect lesson for you! This lesson consists of an 1.5 hour video and one 58 pdf study book. Its main subject is to project an easy way to sight read and to learn some important elements of music theory fast and accurately. It’s a one of a kind lesson because almos ...

I've added tunes from Chick Corea, Herbie, Chicago, Breakout Sister, and Duke Ellington for my latest recording project...which means that it's very likely that this album is going to be a double CD. It will feature special guest appearances by Marqueal Ranae Jordan, Gloria Ryann, Selan Lerner, Khari Parker...and (she doesn't even know it, so this is about to be a dramatic unveiling on cyberspace): Lili Kryzanek!

Hear from new album Holding It Down: The Veterans' Dreams Project, where poet Mike Ladd and others take memories of dreams shared by veterans of color of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and set them as poems, which are then put to music by pianist and composer Vijay Iyer . Haunting memories affect all of them, including a woman in the Air Force who flew drones over Iraq and Afghanistan from a remote control console in Nevada. Also in a military vein, pianist Todd Simon recalls boot camp with a composition he wrote while in boot camp - where he had no access to his instrument, the piano, for eight weeks. We'll also hear three versions of the blues classic "How Long, How Long Blues," the latest one, the earliest, and the big hit version from 1928 that made it the classic that is. Plus new music from Chick Corea , and Guy Davis (joined by the Blind Boys Of Alabama on a song that dates from the 19th century), and Joseph Daley who has composed music for each of The Seven Heavenly Virtues , a follow-up to his Seve ...

As a young lad. Lol I used to listen to Jazz... Gerald Albright, YellowJackets, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, etc, etc..with my older cousin roscoe... Although I listened and learned most of it... I called it elevator music... Lol never really understood back then why he liked it so much. Now that I'm a lil more seasoned and understand the concept if making music musical... I get it... Thanks fam for teaching me the fundamentals of music so early in life! Tell him I said this Millacie Jones lol since he has no FB
So out of duty as a keyboard player I finally acquainted myself with Emerson, Lake & Palmer this morning by listening all the way through two of their albums. 1. Wow! KEITH EMERSON is a monster player who could hang with some of the Jazz greats of the time, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, etc 2. I now know where Rob Reiner got most of his ideas for Spinal Tap 3. Hillarious, listening to a live track where the crowd started clapping along only to get left in the dust by a series of 7/8 bars.

Steve Gadd is one of the most sought-after studio musicians, in the world. Regarded as the most influential drummer in contemporary music, Gadd can play anything, easily bridging different musical styles. His feel, technique, and musicality on such tunes as Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways", Steely Dan's "Aja", and Chick Corea's "Nite Sprite" were so awe-inspiring and his concepts so innovative that they instantly assured his special position in the history of the percussive arts.
One of my favorite Chick Corea albums is Light Years (1987) by the Elektric Band. It features Chick with guitarist Frank Gambale, saxophonist Eric Marienthal, drummer Dave Weckl and bassist John Patitucci. What an amazing bunch of musicians!
BIRTHDAY GREETINGS going out to American saxophonist, flautist, composer and bandleader Kenny Garrett! Born October 9, 1969 in Detroit, Michigan, Kenny Garrett grew up wanting to play music. His father, though not a professional musician himself, played saxophone as a hobby. As soon as Garrett graduated from high school, he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra, which was then led by Duke's son, Mercer Ellington. After playing with them for about a year, he moved on to play with various other bands (including a five-year stint with Miles Davis) until 1984, when Kenny Garrett recorded his first album as bandleader, "Introducing Kenny Garrett." It has always been Garrett's ambition to play his own music, and so it is today. Over the course of his career, he has played with the top... Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Brad Mehldau, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Marcus Miller, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, to name just a few. But as Kenny Garrett puts it ...

Friends of Chick Corea: Musicians of the Future by Jazz at Lincoln Center
Saturday, September 21, 2013 – 8pm – FREE (with free pass) CYRUS CHESTNUT Artists Collective - 1200 Albany Avenue - Hartford Cyrus Chestnut’s hard swinging, soulful sounds have become a staple in the jazz community. Blending contemporary jazz, traditional jazz and gospel, plus the occasional seasonings of Latin and samba, Chestnut gives himself plenty of freedom to explore different emotions, while keeping his music in recognizable form. His “lush chords, playful grace notes, worshipful tremolos and effortless runs up and down the 88s” are sure to impress, but its his warm demeanor and irresistible sweetness that make him “one of jazz’s most beloved ambassadors.” Mr. Chestnut has played with many leaders in the music scene, including Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Branford Marsalis, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, Jon Hendricks, and Betty Carter, recording and preforming live around the world. An extremely versatile pianist, Chestnut has also collaborated with Vanessa Williams, Brian McKn ...

Going to Yoshi’s the other night to hear the Benny Green Trio made me reflect on all of the wonderful jazz musicians I’ve had the privilege to hear and see in person over the years. Many of them have left us, but some are very much present. Here’s a stream-of-consciousness list of the musicians I’ve heard in person; every one of them touched me and enriched me: Art Blakey, Betty Carter, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins, Sheila Jordan, Harold Land, Bobby Hutcherson, Shirly Horn, Nat Adderly, Lew Tabackin, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Anthony Braxton, Ed Kelley, Geri Allen, Cyrus Chestnut, James Moody, John Scofield, Jon Hendricks, Wynton Marsalis, John McLaughlin, Terence Blanchard, Brian Blade, John Patitucci, Chico Freeman, Mal Waldron, Sam Rivers, Lester Bowie, Kirk Lightsie, Cecil McBee, Ron Carter, Ellis Marsalis, Kenny Burrell, Joe Henderson, Christian McBride, Ray Charles, Sun Ra, Larry ...
One of the great things about YouTube is that I can come home late at night and, at the touch of a few buttons, experience once again the sublime chemistry of Chick Corea and his Three Quartets ensemble live at the Blue Note. Such a beautiful moment occurs midway through Michael Brecker's breathtaking tenor solo, where Chick is literally open-mouthed in amazement at Brecker's seemingly inexhaustible wellspring of ideas. This was near the end of Michael's tragically short life and a testament to his brilliance.

I feel the need to say something, as I have been recently reading peoples impressions of the new Daft Punk Album "Random Access Memories". First and foremost I would like to draw attention to the fact that these 2 guys are a guitarist and a bassist, I think the fact that they are instrumentalists has a lot to do with the experimental nature of this album. I can understand why Daft Punk fans will find this album a departure from their usual fare, while there are still upbeat dance tracks, they are very different from what we are used to from them. I feel this challenges the argument that Electronica is not "real music", I heard influences like John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, KC and the Sunshine Band, Christopher Cross, Steve Miller Band, and the guest track with Giorgio Moroder had HIS signature sound! (writer of "Chase" and "Neverending Story") While I know they are a great toy, I feel the use of vocal harmonizer is overdone, but then I'm a singer, what do you expect? All in all, if you are looking for an a ...

Chops on the menu (Pine vs. McLaughlin) There was a time I reveled in speed madness. Chick Corea ‘Got a Match’..how many times did I spin that finger busting ditty. It rippled with complexity and note abundance – every stem hanger perfectly placed and calibrated to great effect. Watching McLaughlin’s keyboardist Gary Husbands hands Olympic track and field sprint from start to finish line was mesmerizing. Guitarist McLaughlin has played big league with nuclear fusion from day one – one of a handful of six string innovators in this genre. Al Dimeloa was there on the same day and the earth cooked up new steam with Return To Forever. Saw both bands in the early seventies – Mahavishnu at Convocation Hall and RTF opening for Weather Report at Massey Hall. The victor that occasion was Weather Report – simply put – Jaco Pastorius commanded the stage. I became a bit fixated on the idiom but stayed closer to the Herbie Hancock side with the Headhunters – if it ain’t got funk, it ain’t got me. ...
YES Virginia! .Those that drive drums can read! -Hall of Fame - Steve Gadd By Rick Mattingly While working as an editor at Modern Drummer magazine in the 1980s, I came up with what I thought would be an easy way to interview Steve Gadd. I would just make a list of tracks he had recorded with prominent artists and ask him to describe how he came up with the drum part to each one. Making the list was easy; there were so many artists and recordings from which to choose, as he was one of the busiest studio drummers in New York. So, armed with my list and a tape recorder, I met with Gadd at a Chinese restaurant in midtown Manhattan. I quickly discovered that my idea wasn’t so great. Instead of philosophizing about his approach to the drum parts he had created for classic tracks by such artists as Paul Simon, Chick Corea, Steely Dan, Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, George Benson, and countless others, Gadd attributed his inspiration to the same basic source for all of them: “I just listened to the music and tr ...

Here I sit with a glass of red wine instead of the shot of Yukon Jack and a beer that I had when I was “of age” in 1976 and my musical tastes were being honed by such a variety of influences of music from Jim Croce, Harry Chapin, John Denver, and Bob Dylan but also the Allman Brothers, Santana,Eagles, Chick Corea, and George Benson. Yes I can’t understand how we as a country have become so polarized because I grew up to appreciate and still love the proverbial left and right of center of Folk Music. FOLK music, that almost became a pariah to some, but it’s embraced now as it was back in the 60’s. Call it hipster, sure if you are looking for a label. I would like to venture to say that even popular music becomes weaved into the “Folk world” which is us. The freedom lovers of shared music long before the Pandora’s of the world existed, but now we’re YouTube. Well at least until big brother squashes the unabashed violations of copy write laws that might make some of the covers we wa ...

Lyle Mays, who came to fame for his electric collaborations with Pat Metheny, surprised many with this superior outing in an acoustic trio setting. On the liner jacket Mays thanks Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, and Paul Bley for their inspiration. If one adds in Chick Corea and especially Bill Evans, that should give listeners an idea of what to expect. However, to his credit (and with the assistance of bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Jack Dejohnette) Mays avoids performing overly played standards and sticks mostly to originals (including two free improvisations). There is no coasting on this excellent set.CD "Fictionary" (1992)...Source:Almusic Review...José Cortés.
Once again I am saddened and amazed that The Underground Railroad Band has been told that were not what the people in charge of the Leimert Park Jazz festival are looking for. Today is Chick Corea's birthday - 72. Wow. He has been a driving force in jazz/fusion for many years, and one of the groups that literally change the course of music was Return To Forever. With Stanley Clark, Al DiMeola, and Lenny White put together such tight and complex lines that the music was always moving/flowing/changing. I cannot imagine composing this... which is of course what Chick did over and over. This is one of my favorite albums ever - from song to song, it draws such a beautiful picture without any words. and the album cover is fantastic. Enjoy listening to one of the best.

Michel Camilo (born April 4, 1954) is a pianist and composer from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He specializes in jazz, Latin and classical piano work. Camilo lists some of his main influences as Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and Art Tatum.Camilo was born into a musical family and as a young child showed aptitude for the accordion that his parents gave him. Although he enjoyed the accordion, it was his grandparents' piano that sparked his interest the most, so at aged 9 he asked his parents to buy him one. Their response was to first send him to the Elementary Music School, part of the National Conservatory, and then a year later to grant his wish. The formal system of the music school taught Camilo to play in the classical style, and by age 16 he was playing with the National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. Camilo comments on his first encounter with the sounds of jazz, in an interview with the All About Jazz website: "The first time I heard jazz was whe ...

Yesterday evening after a gig at the celebration honoring great Jazz trumpeter Clark Terry, Helen Sung stopped at the elegant Kitano Hotel to take the floor of the hotel's handsome Jazz room with her quartet, Sheamus Blake, tenor and soprano saxophones, Reuben Rogers on bass and Donald Edwards at the drums. They entertained a delighted crowd of her fans, who were particularly interested to see and hear her because of all the time she has spent travelling internationally during the past year. The group did not disappoint, playing three of Helen's intriguing originals plus Thelonious Monk's "Bye-Ya", Chick Corea's "Armando's Rhumba" and the very blusiest "Blue Moon" ever. Ms Sung's "Shall We Tango", inspired by Isaac Albinez' "Espana", for years a great favorite of mine, received a gorgeous performance. ( There was a second set later, which, unfortunately, I had to miss.
