The nominees for the 2013 Equity Jeff Awards are... The much smaller Porchlight Music Theatre also was held in high esteem by the Jeff Committee, with Michael Weber's production of "Pal Joey" scoring an unexpected six nominations. Bill and I enjoyed amazing production of "Julius Caesar" at Chicago Shakespeare last night- Thanks, Judy & Jason!
I have been thinking about Julius Caesar. The play must have received by an Elizabethan audience very differently than as portrayed in the current production at Chicago Shakespeare. In the current production, Brutus is a hero (though with a guilty heart). And his death is portrayed as the triumph of tyranny. But to the Shakespeare's audience, Brutus must have seemed like a terrorist who committed regicide (then the most horrific crime imaginable). To them, Octavius must have paralleled their beloved Elizabeth I. After the civil war that followed the assasination of Julius, Octavius (by then called Augustus) established order and ruled for 50 years. Those 50 years were a golden time for Rome and Augustus was a benevolent Ceasar, if a merciless General. Elizabeth too was a benevolent monarch, whose reign lasted for decades, while England prospered.
Feeling like a normal adult . . . Dinner and a play with my husband . . . No kids . . . No fundraising. Just us. And good friend Sarah, who's playing the Soothsayer in Julius Caesar at Chicago Shakespeare!!
