Thailand - political unrest - a "judicial coup" ahead? - a commentary in The Nation Critics divided on independent bodies and the extent of their powers Pravit Rojanaphruk The Nation BANGKOK: -- Will there be a "judicial coup" soon? The answer is much more complicated than merely asking if there will be a military coup with tanks rolling down the streets of Bangkok. Opponents of a "judicial coup", like the former dean of Chiang Mai University's Law Faculty Somchai Silpapreechakul, says the exercising of power by the Constitutional Court and the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) against caretaker premier Yingluck Shinawatra is beyond their bounds of power and should be regarded judicial intervention. However, opponents think not. Somchai acknowledges that Thai society is still unfamiliar with the notion of a "judicial coup" and there's no one common Thai translation appropriate to it. Also there's room to debate whether the action of the two organisations in the weeks to come - that could lead to ...

Thailand - pre-elections mess - demonstrators asking resignation of non-neutral Election Commissioner Group demands resignation of Election Commissioner January 30, 2014 5:15 pm A group of 5,000 people have called for the resignation of Election (EC) Commissioner Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, accusing him of carrying out his duty without neutrality and attempting to destroy democracy. Pinkaew Luangaramsri, lecturer at the Sociology and Anthropology Department, Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University led a group of 10 to submit an open letter bearing the signatures of 5,000 people to the Election Commission. The letter stated that after the House was dissolved, Somchai had proposed to the government that it defer the election and asked the Constitutional Court to rule who had the authority to defer the election. Professor Tejatat Tejasen is the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy at Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Previously, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the same university. During the Eighth Saudi Medical Conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Professor Tejasen stood up and said: “During the last three years, I became interested in the Quran. From my study and what I have learned from this conference, I believe that everything that has been recorded in the Quran fourteen hundred years ago must be the truth, that can be proved by the scientific means. Since the Prophet Muhammad could neither read nor write, Muhammad must be a messenger who relayed this truth, which was revealed to him as an enlightenment by the one who is eligible [as the] creator. This creator must be God. Therefore, I think this is the time to say La ilaha illa Allah, there is no god to worship except Allah (God), Muhammadur rasoolu Allah, Muhammad is Messenger (Prophet) of Allah (God). Lastly, I must congratulate ...

H Gallery Chiang Mai is pleased to announce an international exhibition by LIGHT SPACE PROJECTS, a non-profit visual arts venture established in 2010 in Thailand. Working with emergent and established artists, Rituals of Exhibition II builds on an earlier project with Chiang Mai University and explores how complex forms can be developed from the principles of abstraction, or so-called reductive modes in art practice. Rituals of Exhibition II also points to aspects of relational art as the works on show, invite engagement with an idiosyncratic web of interconnections. The artists in Rituals of Exhibition II include: John Aslanidis/Pedro Boese/Merric Brettle /Katja Brinkmann/Nate Ethier/Wolfgang Flad/Ludovica Gioscia/Brent Hallard/Gilbert Hsiao/Nithiphat Hoisangthong/Jan Holthoff/Franziska Hünig/Mit Jai Inn/Isabel Kerkermeier/Jeremy Kibel/Andrew Leslie/Julie Oppermann/Rob de Oude/Mel Prest/Debra Ramsay/David Rhodes/Giles Ryder/Gunna Schmidt/Andreas Schmid/Alexandra Schlund/Mark Sengbusch/Jessica Snow/Elisa ...

Exhibition Reveals Chiang Mai Landscape Story and Photos by Phitsanu Thepthong While visiting an art exhibition recently, I got some ideas and now know more about Chiang Mai's present environmental landscape. The “Altered Terrains” painting exhibition, displayed at Baan Tuek in Chiang Mai, is about the work of Pichai Pongsasaovapark, one of Thailand's famous artists and designers. Pichai tells about Chiang Mai’s environment, especially regarding the floods that happened the past two years and their resulting destruction. Pichai said lecturers from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University selected all 28 of his Altered Terrains master pieces for this exhibition. The paintings mostly reveal from a conservative perspective the tranquility of the Chiang Mai area – from the city moats and mountains to the rivers and forests – using acrylics and an ink technique. Inspiration Pichai said that it is because he has seen the deterioration of Chiang Mai's city environment, such as with the people's ...
Myanmar: Kachin tensions.. slow movement in the ceasefire process... but still a long way to go. However, the questions remains: Who defines the cited observers are "independent" or is it a "self-declared" independence on own moral grounds? Road to Kachin Peace is Long and Rocky, Observers Say Independent Burma observers expressed concern about the ongoing Kachin conflict at a meeting at Chiang Mai University, Thailand, on Friday and many doubted that the government was committed to achieving peace with the ethnic Kachin rebels any time soon. Guy Horton, a research fellow at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, said the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) had been singled out as a target by Burma’s military because of the group’s persistent demands for political autonomy through the creation of a federal Kachin State. According to Horton, Burma’s former military supremo “Than Shwe said in mid-2009 that they [the KIO] don’t agree to our terms. And so, we must fight ...

*PRESS RELEASE* 13 February 2013 *Crisis in northern Burma subject of forum, press conference in Chiang Mai* The Burma Concern Project of Chiang Mai University and The Best Friend Library will organize a press conference and forum about the ongoing crisis in Kachin State, Burma, with a number of Kachin activists, academics, and journalists, as well as Western researchers and relief workers, on Friday 15 February 2013 at the university’s Social Research Institute. The purpose of the conference is to share information and raise awareness about the situation in Kachin State, which has been a devastating conflict rife with human rights abuses, displacement, and sexual violence since fighting between the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and the Burmese military resumed in June 2011 following the breaking of a 17-year ceasefire. Despite President Thein Sein’s repeated calls for the discontinuation of offensives launched by the Burmese Army, and recent ceasefire talks between the KIO and the Burmese go ...

We're going to Chiang Mai University to check out their art museum, and walk to a forest temple near by...then a horse and carriage ride thru some ancient ruins. Good times in Chiang Mai...love this city more every time I come back here! Will be sad to leave tomorrow...but leaving with some great memories and photos. ;o)
Out of the frying pan and into the… pot of boiling water? Today we truly got our hands dirty in the field (or where they actually cleaner than when we had arrived?). The goal of the day was simple: collect water samples and data from the San Kamphaeng hot springs to be analyzed in the lab. We were set off with the four of us displaced geologists, four geology students from Chiang Mai University, and a general overview on what it was we were to be doing out there. So after a somewhat brief, but scenic drive out to our field area we stepped out of the car to find that, though we knew what we were sent to do, we had no idea how to do it (at least, we didn’t think so right away)! Eight people, one box of sampling equipment and the combined knowledge of two universities. The sight before us was like the first blinding rays of sunlight in the morning; a flash of dazzling light leaving you disoriented and somewhat confused until your eyes adjust and feeling comes back to the parts of your brain and body that ...

It is quite common for most of the Asia students to be relative weak in writing as we have not been trained to speak out or so. However, beig a biology student is a bless. Back in my school day, as we were not doing thing like solving equations and drawing electron shifting that much, one thing we had to do over and over and over was writing, especially during the exam. Failing to express a thought meant failing the exam!! So I think, because of that, we are now pretty good in writing and I am so grateful to all my teachers at Department of Biology, Fac of Science, Chiang Mai University. Thank you ka!

CHIANG MAI, Thailand – To continue their campaign to stop global warming and deforestation, a group of 30 State Alumni and American Studies Club (ASC) students from Chiang Mai University joined approximately 50 local villagers and NGOs to plant more than 2,000 young trees to restore forest at Doi Suthep-Pui National Park on June 9, 2012. In the afternoon, these energetic volunteers also assisted local leaders to nurture some juvenile trees, apply organic fertilizer, weed and grade local tree seedlings. Alumni also had conversations with community leaders about the consequences of deforestation; for instance, drought, mud slide, and wildlife extirpation. This community engagement is a part of “Alumni at Your Corner Project” which encourages State Alumni’s participation in community service activities through various regions throughout Thailand.
