My GG Grandfather Chandler was an attorney in Mobile. His daughter, Sarah Estelle Chandler was my great grandmother. She was born on the same day I was born on, November 20th, only 112 years earlier in 1835.

It was early before sunrise on the morning of April 12, 1861 when the artillery batteries surrounding the Charleston harbor opened fire on Fort Sumter. The cannon fire was relentless, lighting up the dark southern sky. Folks woke up to the fireworks display but no one was surprised that this day had come. It was a game of chicken between the US Government and the newly formed provincial government now being called The Confederate States of America. South Carolina had declared it's succession from the union back on December 20, 1860 soon after Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States. Lincoln swore that the preservation of the union was paramount. For many his election was seen as certain Civil War. Six other states succeeded and in February of 1861 they had formed The Confederate States of America with it's capital in Montgomery, AL. It was in December 26, 1860 that Major Robert Anderson have moved his small band of troops from nearby Fort Moultrie to the island stronghold of Fo ...

TODAY IN U.S.MILITARY HISTORY 1775 – As troubles with Great Britain increased, colonists in Massachusetts voted to buy military equipment for 15,000 men. 1861 – Gustavus V. Fox, ex-naval officer now a civilian, reconnoitered Fort Sumter, Charleston Harbor, as directed by President Lincoln, to determine the best means of relieving the Fort. Based on his observations, Fox recommended relieving Sumter by sea. 1862 – Confederate troops under General Henry Hopkins Sibley attack Union troops commanded by Colonel Edward R. S. Canby near Fort Craig in New Mexico Territory. The first major engagement of the war in the far West, the battle produces heavy casualties but no decisive result. This action was part of the broader movement by the Confederates to capture New Mexico and other parts of the West. Flag Officer Farragut formally relieved Flag Officer McKean as Commander, Western Gulf Blockading Squadron. As his other ships arrived, he assembled them at the Southeast Pass and sent those whose draft permi ...
Yesterday in 1864, during the Civil War, the Union ship USS Housatonic was rammed and sunk in the Charleston Harbor, SC, by the Confederate hand-cranked submarine HL Hunley, which also sank. The Hunley Sesquicentennial 150 years ago yesterday in 1864, the Hunley became the world's first successful combat submarine when she attacked and sank the USS Housatonic off the coast of Charleston. The Hunley signaled to shore she had completed the mission and was on the way home, but instead, mysteriously vanished with her crew of eight. Lost at sea for over 130 years, the Confederate vessel was finally located in 1995 by New York Times best-selling author Clive Cussler. After years of planning a recovery effort, the world watched on August 8th, 2000 as the Hunley broke the water's surface for the first time in over a century. She was brought to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston, South Carolina, a state-of-the-art laboratory facility designed to excavate and conserve the Hunley. The submarine ...
So, before the initial assault on Morris Island during the campaign for Charleston Harbor (1863), Union soldiers wanted a good meal the night before battle. One managed to raise some money, sneak out, and buy a bunch of (unmarked) canned food. It turns out the cans were just spoiled asparagus, so nobody got any decent food. They put the cans of bad veggies in the cannons, though... so there's that.
The Saluting Ghost of Fort Sumter Fort Sumter, located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina has the distinction of being the site of the first act of aggression in The Civil War. As with most places with that amount of history, there are tales of ghosts surrounding Fort Sumter. But this ghost story does not come from the battle of the fort, but rather from the act of surrender... Union Army Major Robert Anderson was in charge of the fort on Thursday, April 11, 1861 when Confederate Brigadier General P. G. T. Beauregard sent three aides to the fort to demand its surrender. Major Anderson, without either the supplies nor the authority to properly defend the fort, stalled for as long as he possibly could. But the tactic was futile. At 4:30am on Friday, April 12, 1861 the Confederate Army opened fire on the fort. For 34 hours shells rained down on Fort Sumter. The Union soldiers did what they could to fight back, but it was of no use. On Saturday, April 13, Fort Sumter was surrendered to the Confederates. Sup ...
Happy Trivia Tuesday! On January 9th, 1861 the Star of the West, an unarmed paddle wheel ship, arrived in Charleston Harbor carrying supplies and some reenforcments for the besieged garrison at Fort Sumter, SC. She was fired on by Cadets from the Citadel, with a warning shot across the bow, and then was hit three more times (with minimal damage) as she turned to leave the harbor. Can you guess what these first shots were leading?

From CNN.com ... Slave in Jefferson Davis' home gave Union key secrets William Jackson was a slave in the home of Confederate president Jefferson Davis during the Civil War. It turns out he was also a spy for the Union Army, providing key secrets to the North about the Confederacy. Jackson was Davis' house servant and personal coachman. He learned high-level details about Confederate battle plans and movements because Davis saw him as a "piece of furniture" -- not a human, according to Ken Dagler, author of "Black Dispatches," which explores espionage by America's slaves. "Because of his role as a menial servant, he simply was ignored," Dagler said. "So Jefferson Davis would hold conversations with military and Confederate civilian officials in his presence." Dagler has written extensively on the issue for the CIA's Center for the Study of Intelligence. In late 1861, Jackson fled across enemy lines and was immediately debriefed by Union soldiers. Dagler said Jackson provided information about supply route ...
