FRAN -Scott McDermott: Mike Ashley can prove he is genuine by hiring Billy Davies as Rangers manager now Dec 21, 2014 OPINION BY SCOTTMCDERMOTT ALLY McCOIST activated his 12-month notice period last week and SCOTT believes that Mike Ashley needs to do the right thing by paying him off now and hiring Billy Davies as his replacement. IT’S been the question on every Rangers supporter’s lips for weeks now. Will Mike Ashley – and his sidekick Derek Llambias - be good or bad for their club? Despite the ‘Union of Fans’ staunch opposition to Ashley’s involvement at Ibrox , ordinary punters can’t decide whether the Newcastle United owner wants a successful Rangers or not. But after the shambolic handling of Ally McCoist’s resignation , this is Ashley’s chance to nail it once and for all. If he’s serious about rebuilding Rangers - on and off the park - and getting them back to Scotland’s top flight and the Champions League, he should prove it. By paying up McCoist what he’s due and appointin ...
Chelsea finished their Champions League group stage campaign unbeate with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Sporting at Stamford Bridge. Cesc Fabregas opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Filipe Luis was brought down by Ricardo Esgaio inside the first ten minutes. Andre Schurrle added a second shortly after, with a fierce shot from the edge of the box following good work by Nemanj Matic. Sporting clawed a goal back in the second half through Jonathan Silva, but John Obi Mikel restored the home side's advantage and secured all three points, while Schalke's victory over Maribor meant the Lisbon side did not qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. Jose Mourinho made six changes after Chelsea's first loss of the season at Newcastle United on Saturday as the likes of Schurrle, goalkeeper Petr Cech and highly rated defender Kurt Zouma came in. The visitors, also missing the suspende Cedric, were crucially without Manchester United loanee Nani - scorer in four of their five Champions League ma ...
EPL- Newcastle break Chelsea's unbeaten streak: Chelsea's unbeaten start to the season ended in a dramatic 2-1 loss at Newcastle United on Saturday when Papiss Cisse struck twice to stun the Premier League leaders at St James' Park. Arsenal's hopes of a third successive victory were dashed in a 3-2 defeat at Stoke City where they trailed 3-0 at halftime and Liverpool were held to a 0-0 home draw by Sunderland. Undefeated in 23 matches in all competitions since April's Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid, Chelsea proved far from invincible as 10-man Newcastle survived a late barrage to prevent the visitors setting a record unbeaten run. Few could deny Newcastle a deserved win that lifted them to seventh in the table, although Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said his side had been unlucky to lose. The hosts lost goalkeeper Rob Elliot to injury at halftime, replaced by young rookie debutant Jak Alnwick, and had to man the barricades with only 10 men when Steven Taylor was dismissed after gettin ...
Newcastle United ended Chelsea's 23- match unbeaten run as Papiss Cisse scored two second-half goals in a tense 2-1 win over the Premier League leaders on Saturday. Cisse, who came on as a substitute after the break, tapped in Newcastle's first after 57 minutes and struck again on the break 20 minutes later, seconds after Eden Hazard had been denied an equaliser by the woodwork. Newcastle were reduced to 10 men shortly afterwards when Steven Taylor was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Andre Schuerrle before substitute Didier Drogba gave Chelsea hope of a comeback with a majestic header after 83 minutes. Chelsea applied late pressure in a nerve-jangling six minutes of stoppage time but their hopes of stretching their unbeaten run to a new club record were thwarted by dogged Newcastle resistance and a brilliant fingertip save by substitute keeper Jak Alnwick on his competitive debut. Defeat for Jose Mourinho's side, their first since the second leg of last season's Champions League semi- final again ...
Liverpool: Full Report Card for Every Position for November - It was a hugely disappointing, deflating month for Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool side, who struggled to find form or consistency in both the Premier League and the Champions League throughout November. Losses against Newcastle United , Real Madrid , Chelsea and Crystal Palace were followed by a draw away to PFC Ludogorets Razgrad and a 1-0 victory over Mark Hughes' Stoke City at the end of the month. LIVERPOOL VS CHELSEA Chelsea hit Liverpool's Barclays Premier League title hopes at Anfield for a second straight season after a 2-1 win on Saturday. Brendan Rodgers' side came into the game looking to banish the memories of last term's corresponding fixture, Steven Gerrard's slip and the defeat which halted their trophy charge. But again they came out second best as Gary Cahill and Diego Costa overturned Emre Can's first Liverpool goal and Chelsea moved a daunting 15 points clear of the Merseysiders. Gerrard, Mario Balotelli and Jordan Henderson were recalled after being omitted from the starting line-up for the UEFA Champions League match with Real Madrid, but it was the only change from last week’s BPL defeat by Newcastle United, Can, who put the hosts ahead early on with an effort that deflected in off Cahill. The England man, against whom twice claims for handball in the Chelsea area were dismissed, atoned just five minutes later, bundling home despite Simon Mignolet's best efforts. Jose Mourinho's ...
Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool are excited by the challenges that await them over the course of the upcoming eight days as they prepare to tackle three crunch fixtures. The Reds travel to Newcastle United on Saturday lunchtime before jetting out to Spain for the Champions League clash with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Then the week is rounded off by the visit of Barclays Premier League table-toppers Chelsea to Anfield - and Rodgers will relish the task of trying to obtain three victories. He told his pre-match press conference at Melwood: "It's why we strengthened the squad - because of weeks like this. "We made nine changes from the team against Hull to the team against Swansea and we came out with a victory. "It's a really exciting week, that's the key point. Newcastle will be a tough game, but it's a game we'll relish and look forward to. But that's the only focus at the moment. We want to get the three points there."
Seen some "Rangers Fans" claiming they would boycott going to all Home Games at Ibrox Stadium. That has got to be one of the most brain-dead comments someone could possibly write. Mike Ashley has a personal wealth of £3.75 Billion. Somehow I don't think an extra couple of thousand pounds being lost every second week will affect Rangers in anyway AT ALL if Ashley has £3.75 billion... This man has money and thats what Rangers need, and he has one *** of a lot of it! He knows how to run a Football Club and can get Rangers into the UEFA Champions League unlike Newcastle United. Plus he isn't guity of tax fraud unlike Dave King and will be able to get us big sponsorship deals. We will probably see Derek Llambias as the next Rangers Chief Executive Officer. As for McCoist to stay or go, I recon Ashley will give him the rest of this season to prove himself.

IS JOSÉ BUILDING THE GREAT ENTERTAINERS FOR ABRAMOVICH? ~ HAVING SCORED 16GOALS BUT CONCEDED 7. Jose Mourinho might not appreciate the comparison but right now his Chelsea team more closely resemble Newcastle United in their heady days under Kevin Keegan than anything he has assembled before. Chelsea so far are the great entertainers&have scored&conceded more goals after 5 matches than any previous Mourinho team. Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw vs Schalke in the Champions League means Chelsea have found the net 16 times but had their own defence breached on 7 occasions. For a man so focused on tactical tightness that total is anathema to Mourinho, even if his side remain unbeaten. Only in his 2011-12 season at Real Madrid has Mourinho started a season anywhere like this 1 at Stamford Bridge. Back then after 5games in all competitions Real had scored 15goals&conceded 6. Ominous signals for the Premier League chasing pack; Real won La Liga that season, scoring a frankly ridiculous 121 times for a plus 89goal di ...

01-07-2014 Henrique Hilario 's playing contract ends this summer following eight years as a Chelsea Football Club goalkeeper. The Portuguese arrived on a free transfer ahead of the 2006/07 season, signed by Jose Mourinho , and was backup to Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini . With both Cech and Cudicini out injured, he made his debut in a Champions League home match against Barcelona, and it proved a debut to remember as Hilario turned in an impressive performance, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win. With first and second-choice keepers remaining out, he went on to make another 17 appearances that season. Christmas 2007 saw Hilario thrust back into the spotlight. With Cudicini out injured, he replaced Cech in a 1-0 win at Blackburn Rovers, also featuring in festive-period wins against Newcastle United, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. Arsene Wenger has long admired the right-back, who would replace Man City-bound Bacary Sagna, and appears to have finally got his man. Now the TalkSport website claim he will get his wish, as Wenger will announce a deal after France’s World Cup exploits. -AT

Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy ahead of an £10 million move, according to the Daily Star. The French striker was on loan at Newcastle United last season, scoring 14 goals in the Premier League, but was spotted at the Emirates for Arsenal’s end-of-season game against West Bromwich Albion, fuelling rumours that he was to sign for the North London club. Arsenal have forever been linked with Remy and missed out on him when he decided to sign for QPR. It seems their chance has finally arrived as, according to reports, they have agreed terms with the French striker ahead of an £10m transfer. END OF THE DISCUSSION: Ameobi leaves Newcastle after 14 years Shola Ameobi will bring an end to 14 years of playing at Newcastle this summer after he was not offered a new contract. Loan pair Loic Remy and Luuk De Jong will also return to their respective parent clubs Queens Park Rangers and Borussia Monchengladbach. It means the Toon Army are left with only one recognised senior striker, Papiss Cisse, who is out with a knee injury and could miss the start of next season. Ameobi came through the ranks on Tyneside before making his debut in September 2000. However, he struggled to ever hold down a regular spot at St James' Park, making 397 appearances and scoring 79 goals in total. Seven of those came against Sunderland in Tyne-Wear derby fixtures while the 32-year-old also famously scored in the Champions League against Barcelona at the Camp Nou in December 2002. Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew said: "I have to make a special mention of Shola Ameobi, who has been an incredible servant to Newcastle Un ...
Loic Remy HOLDS TALK WITH LIVERPOOL AND ARSENAL Queens Park Rangers forward Loic Remy has already held talks with Liverpool and Arsenal over a possible transfer, Daily Mail reports. Remy has three years remaining on his QPR contract but after bagging 14 goals on loan with Newcastle United, it is likely that the Frenchman will move to a bigger club. And the Premier League duo of Liverpool and Arsenal are leading the race to sign the 27-year-old striker. The Gunners were linked with a move for Remy in the January transfer window and now look to renew their interest as they look to bolster their squad for next year’s title challenge. Liverpool finished a surprising second place in the Premier League last term, but will need reinforcements with the added demands of UEFA Champions League football next season. The former Marseille man was selected in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for the World Cup and will look to impress in the hopes of securing a more lucrative deal with potential suitors. Remy was seen ...

May 11th has stealthily crept into our lives like a friend we thought was true but who, unknowingly, revealed a traitorous side and turned out to have more faces than the town hall clock. Where was I happily devoid of such people on this day in the past? 1997 - Prem - Sheffield Wednesday 1 v 1 Liverpool - United had already won the League but Liverpool, somehow, contrived to finish fourth in a two-horse race. Second place brought with it a place in the following season's Champions League and Liverpool were favourites to get that second place (plus ca change, eh?). Our final match was at Hillsborough, a name that still makes me shudder (for more than one reason), against a Wednesday side which had had a good season and just missed out on a UEFA Cup place. Newcastle United and Arsenal were the other two teams in the running for second spot, the latter having appointed Arsene Wenger, during the season, as permanent successor to Bruce Rioch. This match was going to be no pushover but we still expected to win, ...

track a Forster return NEWCASTLE United are considering a shock bid to lure Celtic No 1 Fraser Forster back to St James’ Park The Magpies are looking at possible summer replacements for wantaway keeper Tim Krul. Krul, who had a loan spell at Falkirk in 2007/08, has lost his place with the Dutch national team and feels he needs to leave Newcastle to regain it. That would put boss Alan Pardew in the market for a new shotstopper, and reports from Tyneside claim England cap Forster and PSV’s Jeroen Zoet are among his main targets. Forster came through the Newcastle ranks before Pardew loaned him out to Stockport, Bristol Rovers, Norwich and then Celtic. The Scottish champions finally bought him for £2.2million in 2012. Newcastle, however, would have to fork out substantially more to get Forster back as Celtic would be looking for at least three times that initial investment. The 26-year-old has excelled at Parkhead, especially in the Champions League, and that form has helped push him into the England se ...

United wait on Rooney for Bayern clash (AFP) Tuesday 8 April 2014 Share Manchester United's Wayne Rooney faces a race against time to be fit for Wednesday's UEFA Champions League quarter-final, second-leg at Bayern Munich with the hosts winless in their last three matches. European champions Bayern suffered their first Bundesliga defeat for 18 months when they were beaten 1-0 at Augsburg on Saturday following last Tuesday's 1-1 first-leg draw with United at Old Trafford. Centre-back Nemanja Vidic's header put United ahead in the first-leg at Old Trafford only for Bayern's Bastian Schweinsteiger equaliser before being sent off for a second yellow card on the stroke of 90 minutes. Bayern coach Pep Guardiola has described Wednesday's second-leg at the Allianz Arena as a matter of "life or death" for holders Munich, who have made no secret of their desire to become the first team to defend the Champions League title. United's hopes hinge on Rooney, who missed Saturday's 4-0 league win at Newcastle United with ...
Do not fear we have not entered a parallel universe - as much as it might just feel that way after looking at the respective Bayern Munich and Manchester United results this afternoon. As United were tearing apart Newcastle United away from home - eventually winning the game 4-0 to consolidate their position as the best team on their travels in the Premier League - the unbeatable Bayern Munich were beaten. They lost 1-0 to FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga - their first defeat in 53 games and the first time they have failed to score since that 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in last season’s Champions League. United will therefore surely go into the Champions League second leg against Bayern with quiet optimism of pulling off a shock. And that is when I would reel in the excitement and give you all the bad news. Bayern Munich rested an abundance of first-teamers for the game - some for all of it, some for most. The likes of Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Philipp Lahm were all told to stay at home while David Alaba, ...

Robert Emmanuel Pirès was born on the 29th of October in 1973.. Bobbys birthplace was in Reims, France.. Bobby is a former French international footballer who is best known for his time with Arsenal, with whom he won three FA Cups and two FA Premier League titles including the club's famous unbeaten season of 2003–04... Robert Pires was signed by Arsenal for £6 million in 2000, after stiff competition from Real Madrid and Juventus, replacing Marc Overmars, who had left for Barcelona for a record £25 million. Initially, Pirès' form was indifferent, and some people criticised him after his comments that the English game was too physical. However, he slowly began to regain the form he had shown at Metz, scoring a superb solo goal against Lazio in the 2000–01 Champions League, and the winner against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-finals. De Jong journey ahead for Toon Army While the climate may be miserable outside, the atmosphere within the dressing room at St. James’ Park can’t be much better after a fortnight from *** which coincided with the 23-year-old’s arrival at Newcastle United. It wasn’t that long ago that the Gallowgate End was bouncing to the tune of Blaydon Races with the Magpies sixth in the Barclays Premier League table –just six points off the top. A 5-1 win over Stoke on Boxing Day was the pinnacle of a run that saw Alan Pardew’s men win seven of their previous nine games with the side harbouring serious Champions League hopes. However, as with any period in Newcastle’s spotted history, the gratifyingly good was quickly followed by the mind-bogglingly bad. Four defeats in a row, including a 2-1 home reverse in the F.A Cup to Cardiff, brought the club back down to Earth before the curse of the January transfer window marked the beginning of a miserable two weeks for the Toon Army. First strike was the sale .. ...
Howard Webb will take charge of Newcastle United's trip to Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday (3pm kick-off). It is only the second time this season the Yorkshire-based official has been appointed to a Magpies match, having been the man in the middle of a 3-0 defeat at Swansea at the start of December. On that night at the Liberty Stadium, Webb booked two players - Mathieu Debuchy and Massadio Haidara. In total during the 2013/14 campaign, the whistler has overseen 27 games across the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and international fixtures, issuing 82 yellow cards, four reds and awarding three penalties. He stepped up to the Select Group for the Premier League three years later, with his first match being a goalless draw between Fulham and Wolves in October 2003. Webb is widely recognised ...

Newcastle United star Hatem Ben Arfa has revealed that if he had a vote in the FIFA Ballon d'Or he would have cast it in favour of Franck Ribery. The Bayern Munich winger has made it onto the three-man final shortlist for the 2013 accolade, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Ribery helped Bayern Munich to win the Champions League, Bundesliga, German Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2013, but is still expected to be beaten to the Ballon d'Or by Ronaldo.
A year that began with awkward questions has ended with an incredible and highly improbable one. Six points off the top on Saturday night, matching the form of the Continent’s heavyweights and very much on the march: are Newcastle United involved in the Premier League title conversation? Before the charges of delusion are prepared, that very poser was put to Alan Pardew by an independent, non-North East voice at Selhurst Park in the hour after United’s latest impressive away day display. He wanted none of it, of course, but the longer this formidable run snakes into the winter months the harder it will be to regard Newcastle as an anomaly in the top six. The weekend brought another 90 minutes where Newcastle looked like they belonged. The title? Let’s be honest, even in the festive party season no one is getting that tipsy on United’s success. This is not a squad built to challenge for those kind of honours. But the Champions League? With a bit of managerial sorcery, good fortune and the reliable ...
Newcastle United moved to three points off the Champions League places with a comfortable 3-0 win at Crystal Palace. Yohan Cabaye, a Danny Gabbidon own goal and a Hatem Ben Arfa penalty sealed the three points for the Magpies. Newcastle took the lead in the 25th minute when Cabaye side-footed home with the help of a deflection off Damien Delaney from Moussa Sissoko's neat pull-back. Six minutes before the break, Newcastle went two ahead when Gabbidon slid Mathieu Debuchy's cross beyond his own goalkeeper, Julian Speroni. Newcastle sealed the points four minutes from time when substitute Ben Arfa slammed home from the penalty spot after Jonathan Parr brought down Shola Ameobi in the area. BBC North East & Cumbria Sport Former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard has become the owner and chairman of non-league Durham City. Frenchman Bernard, 34, played 145 times for the Magpies between 2000 and 2005 before retiring six years ago. "I want to make Durham one of the best feeder clubs in the North East. At the moment, I don't think the area develops enough youngsters," he told BBC Sport. In the 1920s, Durham spent seven seasons in Division Three North - their only spell as a Football League club. Since reforming in 1950 after disbanding 12 years before, they have occupied the lower echelons of the non-league pyramid. Yohan Cabaye feels Newcastle United's form in December will determine whether reaching the UEFA Champions League is a realistic aim.
Can Manchester United find the solution to their woes in the January transfer market? That is the question posed by a report in the Daily Mail. Having suffered a shocking run of form of late, United must respond soon if they are to rescue their season -- which starts with finishing in the top four to secure a Champions League spot next season. There is little doubt the key area of improvement required lies in midfield, where United failed to land any of their big targets last summer -- Marouane Fellaini hardly counts. In order of likelihood, United's shortlist of midfield targets are said to be: Remy Cabella from Montpellier, Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye, Koke of Atletico Madrid and Everton Ribeiro, who has impressed in Brazil with Cruzeiro. Other, rather more fanciful targets, include: Cesc Fabregas, Ilkay Gondogan, Luka Modric, Ander Herrera, Wesley Sniejder and Kevin Strootman. Another club with a particular area in need of strengthening is Chelsea. The Blues' defence has leaked six goals in its pas ...

Champions League - Chelsea v Schalke 04 - 07 Nov 2013 03:45 Chelsea suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United on Saturday. After the scores were level at half time, goals from Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy secured all three points for the Magpies and prevented Jose Mourinho’s men from going top of the table, albeit for a short period of time. Chelsea’s opponents Schalke, on the other hand, ran out 2-0 winners away to Hertha Berlin on Saturday. Julian Draxler’s 91st minute goal added to Adam Szalai’s opener on 26 minutes for the visitors, giving them all three points and seeing them leapfrog their opponents Hertha into 6th place in the Bundesliga. Despite opposing domestic forms, Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Schalke last month should be enough to persuade even the most cynical bettor that the Blues are favourites for Wednesday’s Champions League Group E match. Mikel May Start Against Schalke -As Chelsea Seek Champions League Surge Chelsea of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi is eyeing a starter’s shirt with The Blues in Wednesday night’s UEFA Champions League clash at home against Schalke 04 of Germany, as the Super Eagles star appears good to reap from a backlash of tactical responses from the gaffer, Jose Mourinho, over last weekend’s loss to Newcastle United. With Mourinho still seething from his team’s inability to keep the momentum of their recent burst of good form, only to lose 2-0 away to The Magpies, expectations are high that many previous regulars inn the squad will be axed in Wednesday’s game, thereby giving credence to the possibility of Mikel playing from the start at Stamford Bridge. Mikel would, therefore, have a golden opportunity of contributing to Chelsea’s surge in the elite club competition, as The Blues are rolling high on the back of two away victories against Steaua Bucharest of Romania and Schalke. The two teams met at the ...

Among the many revelations, some more bafflingly controversial than others, regarding the England manager’s role during the recent international break came one that raised eyebrows among Liverpool supporters. After all, had Harry Redknapp been handed the national team job ahead of Roy Hodgson, the immediate future of the Anfield outfit could have been very different. Brendan Rodgers confirmed this week he was approached in April 2012 by Redknapp to become his assistant in the event of the then-Tottenham Hotspur manager landing the big one. Of course, it never happened. Instead, with Redknapp ultimately destined for Queens Park Rangers, Rodgers was charged less than two months later with dragging Liverpool back into the Champions League. So far, so good for this season, with his side second only to Arsenal on goals scored in the embryonic Premier League table going into tomorrow afternoon’s clash at Newcastle United. Rodgers, though, has always maintained an interest in the bigger picture. And while ** ...

Derek Llambias resigned as Managing Director of Newcastle United on Wednesday morning. The news came via SkySports News and a statement on the official site (see below). It seems that the trigger for the resignation was the over-ruling of the signing of FC Twente defender Douglas - Joe Kinnear claiming never to have heard of the Brazilian, who has played in the Champions League. Llambias had spent the summer trying to negotiate a free transfer for the player and it now seems that Chief Scout Graham Carr is likely to follow Llambias out of the club.
Tottenham Hotspur season review Final League position: 5th Points: 72 Goal Difference: +20 On the back of a season finishing 4th, and cruelly missing out on a Champions League place due to chelsea winning the 2011/12 trophy, tottenham parted ways with their manager Harry Redknapp, after him ultimately turning their fortunes around from previous managers. They turned to the young manager who was sacked months earlier by Chelsea, Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas, a manager with a good pedigree, working under Jose Mourinho at Porto, but wasn't taken in by the older players in the chelsea structure. With this brought optimism, and spurs made some great signings in the transfer market to push on, such as Jan Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele, keeper Hugo Lloris and Clint Dempsey, all making a significant impact on the team. After a poor start with a loss at Newcastle United, Spurs went on to be undefeated in their next 6 games, picking up wins at Reading, QPR, Villa and Manchester United. Then they hit their ...
Am sure there'll be a few comments after reading this article, written by *** Quinn Not good enough. Those three little words sum up Newcastle United's players, results and a season that thankfully is now over. I watched our game with Arsenal on Sunday and tried to find positives, but it was hard. We did OK in the first half and then after that Arsenal, who are a good if not great side, toyed with us. Fabricio Coloccini lost his concentration and his man and we lost a sloppy goal. So it ended rather fittingly. We finished 16th in the league and that's where we deserved to be, I'm afraid to say. That's not negativity, that's honesty. I argued with a lot of people in the media last season when they claimed Newcastle's fifth place finish was a fluke and that we over-achieved. Time and again I put forward the argument of Newcastle being a talented team that were good enough to be chipping away at the Champions League places. I hate to say it, but they were right and I was wrong. To go from fifth to 16th in t ...
Missing out on Champions League football again despite amassing their highest Premier League points tally was hard for Tottenham Hotspur to swallow on Sunday and to make matters worse, it was arch rivals Arsenal who pipped them to the post once more. Two months ago it had looked as if Spurs would finally turn the tables on their North London foes when they beat them in the derby to establish a seven-point lead. However, despite Gareth Bale's superb winner in a 1-0 victory over Sunderland on the last day of the season, they could only finish fifth as Arsenal secured fourth with one point more after a less than assured 1-0 win at Newcastle United. "It's devastating. It's really hard to take," Spurs captain Michael Dawson told Sky Sports. "We've got 72 points, the highest total the club's ever got and we still miss out on the Champions League... it's hard to take. It's a hard day. It's not a good day." Bad luck seems to follow Tottenham around in their pursuit of a place in Europe's elite club competition an ...

Steve Harper could not have dreamed his Newcastle United career would end like this. With his contract up and the Magpies having told Harper there won’t be another one at the end of the season, the Easington-born stopper had envisaged a different scenario on Sunday. Harper had been resigned to watching as his two young boys ran out as mascots in what has now turned into a game that will have a worldwide audience due to Arsenal’s Champions League hopes in the balance. That had been in the pipeline a couple months ago, at which stage Tim Krul was pulling out all of the stops and Rob Elliot was waiting in the wings. But football is never as straightforward as that, is it? Krul’s dislocated shoulder meant that Harper was elevated back to bench duty, and even though he knew deep down inside that he was just a heartbeat away from the action, his hopes of a farewell appearance didn’t look likely to materialise with Elliot a man in decent form and clearly Alan Pardew’s choice as cover for the Dutchman. ...
Raul Rusescu won and converted a first-half penalty to give Steaua Bucharest a 1-0 win over last season's European champions Chelsea in the Europa League on Thursday. Lazio won 2-0 at VfB Stuttgart while Fenerbahce snatched a late win 1-0 at Czech side Viktoria Plzen in last 16 first leg ties. Goalkeeper Rob Elliot made a brilliant second-half save from Samuel Eto'o as Newcastle United held out for a dour goalless draw in bitterly cold conditions away to Russian big spenders Anzhi Makhachkala. With the temperature well below zero, Anzhi started brightly but lost momentum after Brazilian playmaker Willian, signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for 35 million euros at the start of February, went off injured after 22 minutes. Chelsea, who ended up in the competition after becoming the first titleholders to be eliminated in the Champions League group stage, are in danger of a second European exit of the season after losing in front of a full house at Bucharest's National Stadium. Man United Linked With £17m Move to Sign Newcastle United Midfielder Old Trafford side keen on St James’ Park star. Man United are set to challenge Arsenal in the race to sign Magpies midfielder Yohan Cabaye according to Italian source TuttoMercato. The 27 year old French international is being linked with a St James’ Park exit but neither Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson is willing to meet the former Lille man’s £34m release clause but are ready to offer have that fee and will hope that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley may be tempted to sell a player who cost just £4.8m. Ashley financed a raft of transfer additions in January and may look to balance the books in the summer and Cabaye may well be keen on moving to a side that can offer him a taste of Champions League football. Fraser Forster's authority boosts Celtic's belief in beating Juventus The goalkeeper went from strength to strength in the Europa League and is now shining in the Champions League Precisely three years ago Fraser Forster was preparing for a League One fixture at Brighton. The goalkeeper was on his third loan spell away from Newcastle United, this time at Norwich City, while doing little to douse suspicion that he was destined for a nomadic career. Stockport County and Bristol Rovers had been his earlier, temporary ports of call. By last November Forster had been dubbed La Gran Muralla – The Great Wall – by one Spanish newspaper in tribute to his exploits for Celtic during their famous 2-1 win against Barcelona. He was already, by then, a part of the England set-up. So when the 24-year-old Forster speaks about Celtic harbouring confidence that they can see off Juventus and progress to the Champions League's last eight, his opinion must be taken seriously. He is proof, after all, of football's capacity ...

The Gunners boss is said to be ready to spend the transfer warchest he has been handed in order to strengthen his squad in pursuit of a top four finish and the coveted Champions League berth that is considered the very least Wenger must garner from the current campaign. Chelsea vs Arsenal tickets still available Alan Pardew has seen Demba Ba leave for Chelsea and now has to deal with the fact that his club captain, Fabricio Coloccini wants to return to his native Argentina. This may leave Ben Arfa considering his options, not least because the St James’ Park side have had a poor season and ...

However, bets can still be placed on the mackems scurrying off into the distance as soon as their little team lose again. Davey

BA TRANSFER COMPLETED Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Demba Ba for an undisclosed fee. The Senegal international moves to Stamford Bridge following an 18-month spell with Newcastle United, and has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Blues. He will be eligible for selection for tomorrow's FA Cup match at Southampton, and the Capital One Cup semi- final against Swansea, but cannot play for us in the Europa League this season having appeared in the competition for Newcastle. He will wear the no. 29 shirt. 'It feels good to be here, I'm very happy and very proud,' Ba says. 'It was important for me, and for Newcastle, to get my future sorted and now we can move on. Now they have the whole month to buy someone and for me as well, the sooner the better. Now I am here I just need to get settled in. 'When the club who won the Champions League wants you, the decision is very easy. This club is massive and that's something that helped the decision a lot. It was not a hard o ...
Nemanja Vidic admits he has to carefully select which games to play in during the first few months of the Manchester United defender's comeback from a second serious knee injury in 12 months. Vidic made only his second start in Saturday's 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion since mid-September. He was an unused substitute for the Boxing Day visit of Newcastle United having suffered a reaction in his first start at Swansea City the previous weekend. "The doctor is managing the games [I play]," Vidic told manutd.com. "Over the first two or three months I have to really look at the games I can play because sometimes I might have a reaction. This is a process I have to go through. I am glad I have managed to play after three months. It is nice to be on the pitch and playing games. Hopefully I can." Vidic suffered his first injury when rupturing a cruciate knee ligament in a Champions League group game at Basel last December which kept him out for the remainder of that season. He then required surgery to the men ...
Sir Alex Ferguson believes Newcastle have lost their 'surprise' factor Sir Alex Ferguson believes that Newcastle United have lost the "surprise" factor that saw them flirt with the possibility of Champions League football last season in a strong Premier League campaign. Alan Pardew’s side finished fifth in the table in an impressive season which saw the former West Ham man take home the League Managers Association and Premier League Manager of the Year awards. However, this season the Magpies have struggled to replicate the same form and are currently in a lowly 14th position in the table, ahead of their trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Boxing Day. "The new players they brought in caught us all by surprise," Sir Alex told reporters. “We didn't really know a lot about them. I knew about [Demba] Ba, of course, but I didn't know anything about [Yohan] Cabaye or [Papiss] Cisse, to be honest with you. "They had fantastic seasons. Second time round, clubs are starting to analyse them a b ...
Manchester United review of 2012 Manchester United might not have won anything in 2012, but there is a definite sense that the mighty Reds are on the rise again. After missing out in the most agonising fashion on the Premier League in May - against Goal Difference to City - United reacted quickly. They landed the major prize of the summer transfer window in Robin Van Persie and he has proved cracking value at £24m. United are top of the table at Christmas and into the Champions League knock-out phase - where Real Madrid await - so all bodes well for a successful 2013. In the meantime, MEN Sport would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and prosperous 2013! January 2011 ended badly with an unfathomable defeat to Steve Kean's Blackburn Rovers at Old Trafford. And 2012 started equally as miserably with a thrashing on the banks of the Tyne against Newcastle United. Then Sir Alex Ferguson pulled an ace from the pack ahead of an FA Cup victory over City at the Etihad. In the build up to the game an ann ...
LINE-UPS! 12:45 Newcastle United v Manchester City John Brewin has previewed today's game. Read the preview here. Newcastle: Krul, Simpson, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon, Perch, Tiote, Anita, Cisse, Ba, Gutierrez. Manchester City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kolo Toure, Nastasic, Clichy, Garcia, Yaya Toure, Nasri, Silva, Tevez, Aguero. And even though their derby defeat was their first in the Premier League this season, City haven't been firing on all cylinders either. Roberto Mancini looks a troubled man, laying into his players at various stages. With the Champions League gone, it is all about the league and FA Cup for them now. Newcastle are hurting with injuries - Ben Arfa, their main creative spark, and Cabaye, their midfield lynchpin is out for another month. So too, is Steven Taylor, meaning Williamson is the only recognised centre half left to partner Coloccini. So, two teams in pretty poor form meet at St James' Park. City have suffered two successive defeats, while Newcastle have lost five of their past six ...

Darren Fletcher was all smiles in training on Tuesday as he moves closer to a Manchester United first team return following 10 months on the sidelines. The midfielder, who suffers from Crohn's disease, an inflammatory bowel condition, played a full 90 minutes for the reserves last week and is poised to make his first senior appearance since November last year. The Scot laughed and joked with teammates at United's Carrington training ground as United ran through preparations for Wednesday night's opening Champions League fixture with Galatasaray. Fletcher, 28, was included in the squad for United's European campaign, suggesting that a first team return is imminent. Fletcher was named in the United squad for Saturday's 4-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford, but didn't make the bench. And manager Sir Alex Ferguson hasn't yet set a date for Fletcher's comeback. After Galatasaray, United travel to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday and then host Newcastle United in the League Cup next Wednesday. Ferguson h ...

anchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, QPR and Newcastle United are the talk of the papers today. All the rumour, gossip, and news you need to know from the last 24 hours Who knows how this season would have turned out if Manchester United gambled on Wesley Sneijder last summer. Now it appears that Manchester City are the ones who want to bring him to England. He had a difficult season at Inter Milan, suffering injuries, mixed form, and being played in a variety of roles by different managers, and the Italians are open to a sale at the right price. The reports stem from Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport and are repeated in the Daily Mail. Sneijder to City? One player Manchester United are said to be tracking this summer is Newcastle United sensation Papiss Cisse. The Mirror claim that Manchester City want him too, but it would surely take a mega-bid similar to one which prized Andy Carroll from their hands for Newcastle to agree to a sale. United don't have that sort of money to spend o ...
Celtic captain Scott Brown has urged Fraser Forster and Gary Hooper to remain at the club next season. Goalkeeper Forster is set to return to parent club Newcastle United following another successful season-long loan at Parkhead whilst striker Hooper is a target for Premier League newcomers Southampton but Brown wants them to stay and help the Hoops into the Champions League. "If you're in a good team and playing well, there will always be interest in you," he told the Daily Record. "Fraser (Forster) has a year left at Newcastle and I'd love to see him back with us but I don't know what will happen. "Gary (Hooper) is still signed to the club and we hope he stays. There's the lure of the Premier League but we've the lure of the Champions League if we get through our qualifiers. "The Champions League is the tournament you want to be in. It's going to be hard to go down to England and experience that because you've got the big four or five teams fighting it out for places.

On 19 May 2007, they became the first team to win the FA Cup at the new Wembley Stadium, having also been the last to win it at the old Wembley, in 2012, Chelsea became the first London based club to win the UEFA Champions League, after beating Bayern Munich in the final. At the end of the 2007–08 season, Chelsea became the highest ranked club under UEFA's five-year coefficient system, the first English club to do so in the 21st century. On the final day ...

LONDON (SE) - Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes come down to the last day of the season when they visit The Hawthorns to play West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon. The Gunners go into the final round of games in third position, but with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United hot on their heels Arsenal know that dropped points could see them slip to as low as fifth in the table. "It will be a great achievement if we manage to do it (finish third)," said Wenger. "I believe it would be reward for a group which has exceptional strength. "They have come through some difficult times, always recovered and always battled. Therefore I will be extremely delighted when we do it. "There is even more uncertainty because fourth place is not this time necessarily in the Champions League. Let's make sure we finish third and win our game - that is the only answer we can give. To do that of course you need a full, committed performance from everybody. "On that front I am quite sure we will get that from ou ...
