Manchester United winger Angel Di Maria admits it has taken him time to adjust following his move from Real Madrid, but he is targeting a major improvement in the second half of the season. The 26-year-old Argentina international accepts it has not been all plain sailing since his arrival at Old Trafford, with Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Southampton his first start since November because of injury. "It is difficult for a player, especially when you come to a new club," he said. "You just want to arrive and you want to show them how well you can play. "So when these things happen it is unfortunate but, that said, the important thing was that when I came back I needed to make sure that I could help the team and that's what I did. "It's important for me and important for the team to be really doing my best and showing what I am capable of." Di Maria believes boss Louis Van Gaal is creating something new at Manchester United and has urged fans to look forward rather than back to the Sir Alex Ferguson era. Grown "F ...

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has told SkySportshe was convinced Liverpool would sign Victor Valdes. The goalkeeper signed as a free agent with Manchester United last week, having been training with them for the past two months. He said: "I was absolutely convinced that he was going to Liverpool. I have got very good reasons to say so and I know a lot of people in Liverpool who also thought he was going. But he felt that he was being trialled at Anfield. "And very cleverly, Louis Van Gaal said we are not going to trial you, just come and train with us. But in a way, it was the same thing. It was just the choice of words he used, so Valdes decided to go there instead." This is potentially a difference where Van Gaal's experience of working with big egos and top stars proved superior to Rodgers, who has this year managed only his first season in the Champions League.
Chelsea to offload winger to fund Reus move Marco Reus is currently one of the hottest properties in world football and with Borussia Dortmund looking to cash in on the young German many of Europe's elite clubs are swarming. Chelsea, along with Premier League rivals Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, have expressed an interest in Reus. Reus has a £20 million clause in his contract that activates in June but Chelsea will face a huge test from Real Madrid to successfully land him. With Mourinho's current attacking options (Mohamed Salah and Andre Schurrle) struggling, he is willing to sell the latter to fund a move for his compatriot. Reus is hoping to move to a big club and Chelsea would suit him perfectly with Belgium winger Eden Hazard and playmaker Oscar in the side. Chelsea are also challenging for major competitions and that will make Reus aware that he will be part of a big club. Madrid are also that having won the Champions League but with Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo in the side game t ...

Back-to-back failures to qualify for the Champions League would cost Manchester United more than £100million. Louis Van Gaal's side dropped to fourth after their 1-0 loss to Southampton on Sunday.
::: Match Review - Manchester United v Southampton ::: United 0 Southampton 1 Manchester United suffered a first defeat in 12 games and surrendered third place in the Barclays Premier League after Southampton secured a shock 1-0 win at Old Trafford with Dusan Tadic's solitary strike. The Reds controlled large chunks of the game but ultimately struggled to break down an organised Saints team that has increasingly realistic hopes of earning Champions League qualification this season. Louis Van Gaal made seven changes to the XI that started against Yeovil Town in the FA Cup third round, notably with Angel Di Maria and Daley Blind both returning from injury while Luke Shaw also lined up against his former club for the first time since joining the Reds in the summer. Midweek signing Victor Valdes took his place on the bench, although Colombian striker Radamel Falcao was absent from the matchday squad. The visitors started brightly and almost broke the deadlock in the first minute when England international Nat ...
Southampton grabbed a superb 1-0 win away at Manchester United to add further momentum to a slowly more convincing fight for a Champions League place. United looked stiff and unconvincing from the off and, despite the wealth of attacking players on display, seemed toothless when confronting the Saint’s back-line, they infact didn’t even manage a single shot on goal in the entire 90 minutes. The games only goal came via substitute Tadic, the Serbian even started the move. A superb pass let Graziano Pellè through on goal, the Italian’s effort rebounded off the near post nicely to the feet of Tadic who steered the ball though a crowd of players to silence Old Trafford. The goal did cause a mini revival for the home side with Juan Mata guilty of missing two decent chances. In the end however it was to be Southampton’s win, their first at Old Trafford in 27 years, not only that it meant l ...
Manchester United vs Southampton match report: Dusan Tadic stuns Old Trafford as Saints march on in pursuit of Champions League. Who was to blame for defeat?
Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910. They are regarded as one of the most successful clubs in English football. Manchester United have won the most League titles (20) of any English club,[3] a joint record 11 FA Cups, four League Cups, and a record 20 FA Community Shields. The club has also won three European Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 1998–99, the club won a continental treble of the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Uefa Champions League. The 1958 Munich air disaster claimed the lives of eight players. In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United was the first English Football Club to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson won 28 major honours, and 38 in total, from November 1986 to May 2013,[4][5] when he announced his retirement after 26 years at the club.[6] On 19 May 2014, Louis Van Gaal was appoi ...
ILKAY GUNNER Arsene Wenger could make a move for versatile Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan after he was issued a contract ultimatum by the German giants, according to the Mirror. It is believed Arsenal club could try to prize one of Jurgen Klopp’s prized assets away from the Signal Iduna Park with a £16m deal. Manchester United were thought to be among the clubs interested in Gundogan in the past, but a poor injury record has seen them, as well as other clubs, shy away from a deal for him. Dortmund want Gundogan, who netted in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley, to commit his future to the club or face being sold – a move which has alerted potential suitors across Europe.
Two times Champions League winner and former blaugrana goalkeeper, Victor Valdez, has signed a contract with Manchester United! Welcome to ***
Man Utd to sign goalkeeper Valdes 7 January 2015 Victor Valdes spent 12 years at La Liga side Barcelona Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has accepted an offer to join Manchester United. The Spain international, who has been training with United in his bid to recover from a serious knee injury, has agreed an 18-month contract. Valdes, 32, won six La Liga and three Champions League titles with Barcelona, before leaving at the end of last season when his contract expired. The deal could lead to reserve keeper Anders Lindegaard leaving Old Trafford. It also poses a question about the future of 24-year-old first-choice goalkeeper David De Gea, who was the club's player of the year last season and has excelled again this term. His contract is due to expire in 2016, although senior United sources have said they were relaxed about him signing an extension to that deal. Valdes's honours at Barcelona La Liga: 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013. Copa Del Rey: 2009, 2012. Champions League: 2006, 2009, 2011. ...

Five African Traitors Today, we take a look at five players that turned down a chance to represent African countries in favour of representing a country from a different continent. Jose Bosingwa Attacking full-back, Jose Bosingwa was a pretty fantastic footballer a few years ago, leaving his mark on European football with Porto and Chelsea, with whom he won the Champions League. He was actually born in Zaire (now the DRC). However, given his Portuguese father and the time he spent in Portugal, he was eligible to play for Portugal and chose to represent the Iberian country, rather than the country of his birth. Of late, Bosingwa has gone off the map and is busy playing for Turkish club, Trabzonspor. Claude Makélélé A true legend of the game, Claude Makélélé, who was a runner-up in the 2006 World Cup in France, was a man that revolutionized the defensive midfield position. He won several titles at club level with Real Madrid and Chelsea, but was actually born in Zaire’s capital city of Kinshasa. He ...
On this day... Henrik Larsson. The Swede made his Reds debut on this day in 2007 and even scored in a 2-1 win over Aston Villa. In total, Larsson made 13 appearances throughout his temporary stay at United and scored three goals - including this one against Lille in the Uefa Champions League. His short stay at Old Trafford undoubtedly helped the Reds win the 2006/07 title and he remains a popular figure among fans. Larsson on United in 2010 "If there is one regret I have from my career, it is that I came home to Sweden when Mr Ferguson was trying to get me to stay at Manchester United. I should have stayed at United for longer because I had a great time there and everyone at the club was very keen to keep me. My time there was too short. The whole experience was fantastic and, although I was 35 at the time, I still felt that I had some good football in me." Sir Alex on Larsson “In his last game in our colours at Middlesbrough we were winning 2-1 and Henrik went back to play in midfield and ran his balls ...
Alastair Johnston: Champions League is the promised land..and Robert Sarver believes he can deliver Rangers from the football wilderness AMERICAN banker Robert Sarver has launched a shock £18million bid to buy control of struggling Rangers because he dreams of leading them back into the Champions League. Sarver, the owner of NBA franchise Phoenix Suns, has emerged as an unlikely saviour of the stricken Ibrox club in a week that they required a £500,000 emergency loan to stay afloat. The 53-year-old has revealed that he was looking to invest in a club in England or Spain - before he was alerted to the plight of the Glasgow giants by ex-player Davie Robertson. Former Gers chairman Alastair Johnston reckons the prospect of reviving the club and seeing them compete in Europe's premier competition in the future is driving the financier. The prospect of Rangers competing alongside the cream of the continental football, with the likes of Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, seems like highly fancifu ...
Gold dust for United fans here. Who remembers that famous night when Manchester United went to Juventus and won to secure a spot in the final of the Champions League in 1999? Dear Steven Gerrard, To this day, I still remember the first Liverpool game I watched. It was the League Cup final in 2003. I knew of a blond bloke with long hair playing for Manchester United, but I did not know about a tall lanky player wearing the No.17 kit for Liverpool. I remember him scoring the first goal in that final from outside the box and then, when the cameras focused on him I read his name for the first time. The name was ‘Gerrard’. I got to see so many spectacular efforts like the one you scored in 2003. In fact, your goal against Olympiacos which sent us through to the next round of Champions League still gives me goose bumps. Then there was that game in 2005, which etched your name in Liverpool folklore forever. That magical night in Istanbul! There was very little hope after we went three nil down, but you showed us we should never give up. The way you rose above the Milan defense and scored our first of the night still sends shivers down the spine of each and every Liverpool fan and ...
LUNCHTIME SPORTS UPDATE WITH EMMAH ATAI: Steven Gerrard has officially confirmed that he will leave Liverpool at the end of this season. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard called his decision to leave at the end of the season "the toughest" of his life. The 34-year-old, out of contract this summer, joined the Reds aged nine and has scored 180 goals in 695 games. He led the club to the Champions League title in 2005, scoring his side's first goal as they came from three down to draw 3-3 against AC Milan and then win on penalties. He has also won the Uefa Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups, one Community Shield and two Uefa Super Cups, and earned 114 England caps before retiring after the World Cup. He added he would continue to play but not for a potential rival as he could "never contemplate" facing Liverpool. Gerrard is being linked with a move to Major League Soccer in the United States once the English season ends. Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal says his side must improve their defending of se ...

From full-backs in midfield to diamond formations: Reviewing 2014's tactics DECEMBER 30, 2014 11:54:12 AM PST By Michael Cox Tactically, 2014 was an interesting year for football at both club and international level, with more variety than usual, and some intriguing concepts being popularised -- or re-popularised. Here's a review of some of the most interesting tactical features of 2014. Guardiola's full-backs in midfield It's extremely rare to see players in positions you've never seen before, but Pep Guardiola's use of Philipp Lahm and David Alaba early in 2014 was genuinely revolutionary. It was particularly noticeable against Manchester United in last season's Champions League: their defensive positioning was that of natural full-backs, but rather than surging down the flanks to make overlapping runs, they instead drifted into central midfield positions. The idea, supposedly, was to allow Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery to come deep and collect possession with space to run into -- without overcrowding ...
Manchester United can sign 'new Ronaldo' Memphis Depay - if they make the Champions League:
Tottenham Hotspur vs. Manchester United live stream: Time, TV schedule and how to watch the EPL online : Source: SBNation.com – All Posts:– Sunday’s early Premier League kickoff sees Spurs play host to Manchester United. Manchester United got off to a wobbly start to the season, though the Red Devils have quickly found form and now look like a dangerous Premier League side once again. Heading into Saturday’s game away at Tottenham Hotspur, Louis Van Gaal’s outfit sit comfortably in a Champions League spot, three points clear of fourth-placed Southampton, and four of West Ham United. However, though Spurs are down in a rather underwhelming seventh place heading into the round, they are only a couple of points adrift of the final Champions League qualification place. Three consecutive wins — though far from hardly convincing, as is Spurs’ wont — have moved Mauricio Pochettino’s side up into the European mix, and with home advantage, they may well fancy their chances of nicking a result. Ke ...
Midfield Rooney leads Manchester United old guard through testing Christmas period COMMENT: The England forward scored twice and assisted another as United got back on track against Newcastle despite injuries again biting around Old Trafford Dec 26, 2014 17:48:00 By Peter Staunton at Old Trafford The presence of Radamel Falcao was the only indicator things had moved forward for Manchester United this season. All the rest of their starting XI and substitutes against Newcastle predated Louis Van Gaal's time at the club. That makes it all the more remarkable that United are sitting prettily in third place in the Premier League and well on course to re-qualify for the Champions League after a one-year hiatus. At the start of the season, and following that Swansea defeat, much was made of United's need to bring in new players and fast. Plenty were signed but most of them currently sit infirm while the old guard pick up the points through this vital Christmas and New Year period. Angel Di Maria was the latest t ...

When Roberto Mancini fumbled in Manchester City, he was removed and Manchester City won the league. Now, it is time for "CHANGE" in our country, we want CHANGE. "CHANGE" !!!.
Manchester United could now have a strong chance of signing Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman in January due to the Serie A club's early elimination from the Champions League, Old Trafford sources have told ESPN. Strootman's season only began last month following his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained in March, and Roma's failure to progress from their group in Europe has led United to believe they have significant leverage to do an earlier deal for the 24-year-old. United's interest in the Netherlands international is long-standing and has only increased following the arrival of his former national coach, Louis Van Gaal, at the Premier League club in the summer. The knee injury Strootman picked up not only ruled him out of the World Cup but also prevented any immediate possibility of a transfer following Van Gaal's appointment, although it had been anticipated at Old Trafford that a deal would eventually take place at the end of the 2014-15 campaign. There had been extensive preliminary ...
This past week has been absolutely devastating for Liverpool with the club crashing out of Champions League and a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Manchester United. The Reds continue to sink without trace and are already finding themselves 10 points behind their arch rivals. With 10 defeats in all competitions already, and the new signings failing to make any significant impact, the pressure is mounting on Brendan Rodgers. The performances have been no where near to any acceptable level and what started as a surrurataion of doubt, has reached its crescendo, with fingers being pointed at the manager while dissecting Liverpool’s season so far. Several media outlets have reported speculations about Rodgers’ future and the dressing room unrest. … Read More →
David De Gea: The man-mountain carrying Van Gaal's Manchester United The Spain international was in stunning form and made a string of fine saves to thwart Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, but can the Red Devils continue to be so reliant on him? Fragile, lightweight and devoid of confidence, David De Gea’s formative years at Manchester United offered little to suggest that he could evolve into a No.1 with a stature so imposing he could even rival Peter Schmeichel. The Great Dane has long been the benchmark for Old Trafford goalkeepers and, at last, United have a keeper not just filling his void, but stepping out if his shadow too. Louis Van Gaal’s side picked up their sixth consecutive win on Sunday, dispatching an injury and confidence hit Liverpool side who still seem to be reeling from both their recent Champions League exit and last season’s so-near-yet-so-far title challenge. The 3-0 scoreline might suggest a degree of control, but once again the Red Devils were indebted to De Gea. The Spaniard w ...

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen is confident that the Reds will beat Manchester United in Old Trafford on Sunday. Liverpool suffered a disappointing Champions League exit at the group stages after a 1-1 draw at home to Basel on Tuesday. Midfielder Allen is hoping to a similar performance to the corresponding Premier League fixture between the sides last season that saw Liverpool triumph 3-0 in March. [ 157 more words. ]
Out of the Champions League, five points off fourth and with Manchester United bent on revenge for last season's 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford when the two teams meet on Sunday, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has a tricky news conference to negotiate. The media are gathering at Melwood and Rodgers will be out shortly to face them.
The Premier League's fiercest rivalry returns on Sunday as Manchester United take on Liverpool. While Louis Van Gaal's men are on the rise following five successive league wins, Liverpool are still reeling from their Champions League exit. Who will have the upper hand at Old Trafford? Scott Patterson (United) and Steven Kelly (Liverpool) face off ahead of the big one. So, Liverpool are there for the taking -- right? Scott Patterson: You would think so as Liverpool's football recently has been pretty poor. United aren't playing particularly well, either, but at least they are getting results. There appears to be a switch in mentality, which has allowed United to get all three points against the likes of Arsenal and Southampton, despite being largely dominated. It's too early to claim that the "never say die" attitude of the Sir Alex Ferguson era has returned, but the team is certainly looking less fragile than it did at the beginning of the season. Liverpool will probably raise their game at Old Trafford. ...

When Luke Shaw is earning £100,000 per week, is it any wonder Raheem Sterling is not swayed by £70,000? As Liverpool's woeful season took an unwanted turn this week with Champions League failure, headlines over the future of Raheem Sterling only pile on the misery. The England international is unconvinced over the club's £70,000 per week offer to improve his terms from his current wage of £25,000. report The Mail. With Real Madrid's interest well known, Sterling has a tough decision to make, and one that is made tougher by the fact he may well feel Liverpool are undervaluing him. A case in point is the £100,000 per week deal Manchester United agreed with left-back Luke Shaw in the summer. Shaw is a player even younger than Sterling, who plays in the same international side, and while highly regarded, is not touted on the shortlist for the prestigious European Golden Boy for the best young player like the Liverpool star is. If you walked down the street and asked which player is more valuable, and who ...

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness has called on Reds talisman Steven Gerrard to step up his game and deliver the goods against Manchester United this weekend. Brendan Rodgers's charges travel to Old Trafford on Sunday sitting ninth in the Premier League and seven points adrift of their opponents in third. Souness told Sky Sports News: "Steven Gerrard is the one very special player that Liverpool have got, and he has been for the last 10 years, and time and time again he has got big goals in big games for them. Even at 34 you would argue that he is still their biggest influence. "So hopefully that is the same at the weekend and he turns up at Old Trafford and whether it is a free kick, a magic pass, or he fires one in from 25 yards, they need someone to spark their season and he is the most likely one who can do that." Liverpool also head to Manchester on the back of a disappointing Champions League exit following Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Basel at Anfield.

Chelsea finished their Champions League group stage campaign unbeate with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Sporting at Stamford Bridge. Cesc Fabregas opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Filipe Luis was brought down by Ricardo Esgaio inside the first ten minutes. Andre Schurrle added a second shortly after, with a fierce shot from the edge of the box following good work by Nemanj Matic. Sporting clawed a goal back in the second half through Jonathan Silva, but John Obi Mikel restored the home side's advantage and secured all three points, while Schalke's victory over Maribor meant the Lisbon side did not qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. Jose Mourinho made six changes after Chelsea's first loss of the season at Newcastle United on Saturday as the likes of Schurrle, goalkeeper Petr Cech and highly rated defender Kurt Zouma came in. Antony Kastrinakis (The Sun) – Success means winning trophies, not 4th position. “When Wenger arrived, how many titles had Arsenal won in England? Ten. “How many titles had Manchester United won when Wenger arrived? Ten. “When Wenger arrived in England, Arsenal were as big as United, it’s as simple as that. “When you’re at a massive club you have to win. That’s why Real Madrid change managers like shirts. If you don’t win at Real Madrid, you get the sack. If you win, like Carlo Ancelotti does, you get a new contract. When you stick with failure it means you're no longer a massive club." “Now Wenger has kept a massive club afloat, that’s what he has done. But, He has kept a massive club in the top four, he has not kept West Brom in the top four. He has kept one of the top 10 clubs in the world in the top four in England. “Five years before he arrived they had won the title and had won two titles in three years. When he arrived the gap between United and Arsenal was not as big. “I ...

Real Madrid's Ronaldo and Barcelona's Messi have both been named on the three-man shortlist for the 2015 edition of the prize along with Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Current holder Ronaldo and Messi have already won the award six times between them. He also helped Real win the Champions League, Copa Del Rey and UEFA Super Cup. Four-time winner Messi, 27, who recently broke the overall goalscoring record in La Liga, helped Argentina to the World Cup final and won the Golden Ball as player of the tournament in Brazil. Arsene Wenger has once again praised the impact of Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez after the in-form forward helped the Gunners progress to the last-16 of the Champions League. Sanchez has won rave reviews since his £30million summer arrival from Barcelona, and he netted his 13th goal of the season as the north London outfit beat Group D leaders Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium to book their place in the next round. French youngster Yaya Sanogo opened the scoring with his first Arsenal goal, but it was his strike partner who provided the cutting edge for the Gunners. And, asked what the Chilean brought to the team, Wenger said: "Unbelievable fighting spirit and his class as well. “He's a mixture of talent and desire." It was an assured performance from Arsenal, who refused to let their lead slip following the disappointment of the weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, something which pleased Wenger. “We had the focus to defend well together,” the French boss added. "We had a similar ...

Arsène Wenger says Arsenal's solidarity will help the club through difficult spells on the pitch. Disappointing results against Anderlecht, Swansea City and Manchester United either side of the international break have sparked negative headlines ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund. "In the 18 years I have been here I have shown that I can take criticism," said Wenger. "Everybody has the right to have an opinion. What is important is how close we are together inside the club and how much we can respond to people who question our quality Arsène Wenger "Having said that, we have values at this club. The first one is when we go through a difficult patch, we show solidarity. That is a very important one. The second one is that, when you have something to say to each other, we say it face to face. Former Man Utd teammates Welbeck, Rooney prepares for “weird” match as Arsenal hosts Red Devils Wayne Rooney, Danny WelbeckAP Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney have spent a lot of time on the pitch together at Manchester United and with the English national team, so it’s going to be a little weird when the two face off on Saturday at 12:30 pm ET on NBC. Perhaps complicating the situation more is that the pair just completed a rollicking pair of wins as England stars on the international break, and Welbeck, of course, is at Arsenal. The 6-foot, 23-year-old striker has two goals and two assists in 8 Premier League matches for Arsenal this season, plus a trio of goals in the Uefa Champions League. His fine form after being sold by his hometown club has, quite obviously, not escaped the eyes of his manager Arsene Wenger. [ PL PREVIEW: Arsenal vs. Manchester United ] “You can take every challenge in a positive way and that’s what he did,” Wenger said. “Rooney and van Persie have an exceptional goals ...

Liverpool and England defender Glen Johnson, 30, is set to quit Anfield in the summer after being offered a new two- year deal on half of his £120,000 a week wages. Ghana World Cup midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu is at the centre of a transfer tug of war between Hull and Stoke. Manchester United chief Ed Woodward claims the club will not spend on "short- term fixes" in January to get them back in the Champions League. Belgium boss Marc Wilmots has slammed Chelsea and Belgium winger Eden Hazard for his failed 'rabona cross', which involves wrapping one leg behind the other, during Belgium's 0-0 draw with Wales on Sunday. Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant will become the new Ghana boss this week despite being embroiled in a row over his Israeli passport - which bars entry in some African and Arab countries. Louis Van Gaal is expecting either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or but feels one of Germany's World Cup-winning squad would merit the award more. The Barcelona and Real Madrid stars are favourites to be crowned on January 12, 2015, but the Manchester United manager feels the pair do not deserve the honour. Messi, a four-time winner, was handed the Golden Ball at the World Cup after helping Argentina to the final while Ronaldo, a two-time winner, lifted the Champions League with Real Madrid. But Van Gaal feels a member of the triumphant Germany squad would be more worthy victors, with Toni Kross, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gotze all nominated. "Most of the time it is always the well known players [who win the Ballon d'Or]," he told MUTV. "It is more for the football world and outside world than for other things I believe. I think it will be Ronaldo or Messi but I want to say that you have to win something. "The best thing to win is t ...

Sharp fall in United revenue Last Updated: 17:58 18/11/14 Manchester United's first-quarter revenue fell 9.9% compared with the same period last year, figures have revealed. United's overall income for the first three months of the financial year was £88.7m, down £9.8m, but the club did record a profit of £8.9m. Failure to qualify for this season's Champions League meant big reductions in both broadcasting and matchday revenue, down 13% and 21.8% respectively, while money from commerical activity was down 5.2%. But the lack of European football did not prevent United securing a record kit deal during the quarter, and chief executive Ed Woodward predicted further "growth opportunities" as the financial year progresses. He said: "While we recognise that the 2014/15 fiscal year financial results will reflect our absence from the Champions League, we signed the largest kit sponsorship deal in the history of sport in the first quarter. "With that concluded, we are excited to focus our efforts on the meaning ...

MOURINHO: THE FIRST 11 The opening three months of the season will be completed following today’s visit to Anfield and Jose Mourinho has been assessing Chelsea’s league campaign so far. The third international break follows this weekend’s fixtures and regardless of the result against Liverpool, the Blues will go into it on top of the League Table given our four-point lead over second-place Southampton. As the manager made clear yesterday, the aim today is to capture three more points, as it has been throughout. ‘We went to Manchester City and Manchester United to win and for different reasons we couldn’t,’ Mourinho said as he looked back on our two league draws so far. ‘We go to every match to win but when the season started we knew that in the first 11 matches we had to go to Man United, Man City and Liverpool. We knew we had the most difficult first matches of any team. ‘We also played Arsenal at home so if after 11 matches we were mid-table because we lost three matches, it would be nor ...
Vertonghen: Only Chelsea are too strong for Spurs - FJ Jan Vertonghen is confident Tottenham have the quality required to push on for a top four spot this season. The north London club have endured an indifferent start to 2014/15 as they adjust to the methods and style of new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, winning four and losing four of their opening 10 Premier League matches. However, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton and Manchester United also struggling to hit top gear, Spurs still find themselves just three points off a Champions League place ahead of Stoke City's visit on Sunday. And the Belgium international defender believes that aside from the top two, everyone else is within reach as they also struggle to string together victories. “Apart from Chelsea, and at this moment Southampton, I can’t see any team making a five-game run of wins so there is a lot to play for,” he told FourFourTwo. “United, Liverpool, Everton, we are all close. Only Chelsea are probably too strong for us. There’s ...
Manchester City have won the same amount of Champions League games as Manchester United this season. Let that sink in …
Fact: Manchester United have won as many games in this seasons Champions League as Manchester City. Zero.
Are you a glass half-full or half-empty Manchester United fan? I've spoken to several of each both at and since Sunday's derby vs. City. It was another defeat, but what's new? United now lose Manchester derbies -- it's four in a row now -- and the majority of fans didn't expect any more than two points from the club's last two matches (they got one, vs. Chelsea). How times have changed. Next week marks 20 years since United destroyed City 5-0 at Old Trafford. Fans relish the memory of Andrei Kanchelskis, who scored a hat-trick, steamrollering their Manchester rivals, though former City player Steve Lomas recalls an amusing pre-game incident when his manager Brian Horton opted to take on the then-champions. "Brian sat us down and said: 'You know what, I'm fed up of going to United and being negative. We're going to attack them.' He'd seen Barcelona put four past United a week earlier in the Champions League and thought we could do the same. We had two out and out wingers ... and we were three down in no ti ...
Captain Rooney fighting a lonely battle at Manchester United WHILE Wayne Rooney proved once again he can play anywhere, Manchester United still have far too many square pegs in round holes. Considering Rooney hadn't played a club game for a month, he produced a tireless captain's performance that saw him cover every blade of grass - defensive blocks, midfield creativity and even a late foray forward that almost earned an unlikely equaliser. Little wonder he went down with cramp late in the game. But around him too many players found themselves playing out of position. Quite how Manchester United managed to spend over £150m in the summer and yet fail to buy at least two hard-nosed, experienced defenders is something that will continue to undermine their chances of returning to the Champions League next season by virtue of a top-four finish. [Express] What do you think of Wayne Rooney's performance against City?
the FIFA Ballon d'Or (23 players) Gareth Bale WALES In his debut Real Madrid season Gareth Bale helped the Spanish giants to the season they have long been waiting for, as they finally sealed their tenth Uefa Champions League title. Putting them ahead for the first time on the night, it was the last of 22 goals in an impressive first year. His memorable strike to clinch the Copa Del Rey against old foes Barcelona, alongside 15 assists, ensured the Welshman made a spectacular impact at the Santiago Bernabeu following his transfer of more than €90m from Tottenham Hotspur, with a UEFA Super Cup win adding to his success. Karim Benzema FRANCE It seems an age since Karim Benzema went 1,222 minutes without notching a goal for France. That unenviable run came to a welcome end in October 2013 and since then, the Real Madrid forward has rediscovered his scoring touch on the international stage. Recognised as France’s principal attacking threat during the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ in Brazil, where he inspired Les ...

Peter Schmeichel says Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal could rue his failure to sign a commanding centre-back and feels his former club need a defensive leader. Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford, the Dane - who captained United in their 1999 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich - said he was concerned about the lack of authoritative players in front of goalkeeper David De Gea. Schmeichel won five league titles with United, beginning when Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister were the regular centre-back duo and ending with Jaap Stam partnered by either Ronny Johnsen or Henning Berg. He said he does not see similarly dominant defenders in Van Gaal's squad, with the Dutch manager having already used Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Paddy McNair, Tom Thorpe, Tyler Blackett and Michael Keane as centre-backs. Man Utd v CHELSEA PREVIEW TEAM NEWS Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria is expected to overcome a thigh injury in time to face Chelsea. Wayne Rooney is suspended and Radamel Falcao is nursing an injury but fit-again Michael Carrick could play for the first time this season. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says striker Diego Costa has 'a little chance' of playing after a virus and a hamstring problem, but Loic Remy is out. Cesar Azpilicueta is suspended, but Ramires could return from injury. MATCH PREVIEW There have been many column inches comparing and contrasting Louis Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, two of the most intriguing and fascinating coaches, and egos, in the game. For three years they worked together at Barcelona - or rather Mourinho worked for Van Gaal. It was the Dutchman who schemed his way to four trophies and the Portuguese who did the opposition analysis, the odd session on the training pitch and made the tea. Actually, I'm kidding about the tea. Van Gaal has described Mourinho's role at B ...
Can Jose Mourinho upset his former mentor Louis Van Gaal again? When Premier League leaders, Chelsea, travel to Manchester United today Jose Mourinho will face his former mentor Louis Van Gaal. The game sees Mourinho facing Louis Van Gaal, only for the second time after Mourinho’s Inter overcame Van Gaal’s Bayern Munich in the 2010 Champions League final.
Cristiano Ronaldo has paid Angel Di Maria a huge compliment going into today’s Barclays Premier League clash with Chelsea. The world player of the year believes that Manchester United have finally found the man to fill his boots at Old Trafford. Since United sold Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a then world record £80 million they have the lacked the goals, assists and speed on the counter attack that Ronaldo once offered. But the Portugal ace believes they have acquired this skill set in £59.7 million summer signing Di Maria and he’s excited to see what his former team mate can do in today’s clash with Chelsea. Ronaldo and Di Maria became friends during the four years they spent together at the Santiago Bernabéu, to the extent that Ronaldo pleaded with the Champions League winners not to let him leave the club this summer. Di Maria now wears Ronaldo’s old shirt number at Manchester United and so far he’s produced some incredible performances in the illustrious number seven worn by Bryan Robson, G ...
Chelsea and Manchester United managers were together at Barcelona, where closeness and respect grew strongly, but their different paths since will be on display in Sundays showdown The last time they met: 2010 Champions League final When Louis Van Gaal took the managers job at Barcelona in the…
ROBBEN : THERE IS NO CHANCE I WILL LEAVE BAYERN Arjen Robben has waxed lyrical about life at Bayern Munich and insists he is not considering a move away from the Bavarian giants. The Netherlands international moved to Bayern from Real Madrid in 2009 and has enjoyed a trophy-laden stint in Germany. Robben has picked up three Bundesliga titles, as well as winning the Uefa Champions League in 2013, scoring the all- important goal in the 2-1 final victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley. There was talk in the close-season that Robben would move to Manchester United to be reunited with Louis Van Gaal - who he worked under at Bayern and with the national team - but the 30-year-old's glowing description of life in Munich means any such move in the future seems unlikely. "I am enjoying it so much over here," he told The Telegraph. "It is the perfect club with the perfect manager for me. My family is happy, we have lived here for five years and I am exactly at the place I want to be. "It cannot be better than it ...
Flawlessly constructed Chelsea confident ahead of Man United match If you were looking for reasons Chelsea won't win the title, their midweek clash with Maribor was not a good place to start the search. It wasn't the scoreline that should chill the rest of the Premier League, it was the manner in which it was secured. Chelsea aren't just a good team, they're a driven team. They are fully committed, utterly professional and they have very few weaknesses. Manchester United supporters should be rather concerned ahead of this weekend's big game. Maribor, of course, are hardly European royalty. But they reached the Champions League group stages the hard way, their Slovenian title proving no passport to UEFA's cash trough. They had also already held Schalke and Sporting Lisbon before their trip to London. No one else had bested them until they played Chelsea. But it was in the closing stages when you could see what Jose Mourinho has achieved in little over a year, the spirit that he has cultivated. Chelsea were ...
Man Utd KEEPER De Gea REJECTS Real Madrid RUMOURS, Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has rejected rumours linking him with Real Madrid . De Gea is yet to commit to a new contract at Old Trafford, but the 23- year-old has played down talk of a return to La Liga, before reflecting on his side’s start to the season under Louis Van Gaal. “[They are] Just rumours. I'm happy here,” he told Kicker . "Starting problems are quite normal under a new coach with a complete new concept,” he continued. "That's a process and Van Gaal always says that we will improve, but it takes time. But without a doubt, United have to reach the Champions League again."
Chelsea facing striker crisis before Manchester United match: Chelsea face the prospect of having veteran Didier Drogba as their only fit striker for their visit to Manchester United on Sunday in what is usually one of the standout matches of the Premier League season. Jose Mourinho's league leaders will definitely be without their nine-goal top scorer Diego Costa, who has a hamstring problem. Frenchman Loic Remy is also a doubt after injuring himself while scoring Chelsea's opening goal in their club record 6-0 Champions League victory over Maribor on Tuesday. Drogba, 36, came off the bench after 16 minutes to replace Remy and scored from the penalty spot for his first goal since returning to the club following a two-year spell away. He is Chelsea's only fully fit regular first team striker, but Mourinho could include 17-year-old Dominic Solanke in the squad for the visit to Old Trafford, after the teenager came on as a late substitute to make his senior debut against Maribor. "We know Solanke's talent i ...
To all Manchester United fans. If Liverpool do end up losing this evening I'd like you to consider 4 things before you post. 1. We are in the Champions League competition (which you are not) 2. We are playing a team which is considered one of the best in the world (whilst in the Premiership you still haven't played anyone half-decent). 3. Even if we lose this evening we still have one point more than your colleagues Manchester City. 4. We are still a point ahead of you even in the Premiership.
Chelsea6 Remy 13′ Drogba 23′ (pen) Terry 31′ Viler 54′ (og) Hazard 77′ (pen), 90′ NK Maribor0 Didier Drogba scored his first goal since rejoining Chelsea as they recorded their biggest Champions League win with a dominant victory against Maribor at Stamford Bridge. Loic Remy swept in the opener but was quickly replaced by Drogba after injuring himself when scoring. Drogba then converted a penalty before John Terry slid in a third. A Mitja Viler own goal put Chelsea in command before Eden Hazard scored a penalty and drove in a late sixth. Agim Ibraimi hit the post with a penalty for Maribor, but in truth the Slovenians were well beaten. Chelsea have seven points from three games to sit top of Group G, and will be confident of reaching the knockout stage. It was almost the perfect win for boss Jose Mourinho, although the injury to Remy was a cause for concern. With Diego Costa out with a hamstring injury, the Blues could face Sunday's Premier League trip to Manchester United with Drogba as the c ...
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho told the "BBC" he doesn't expect striker Loic Remy to play Saturday against Manchester United after injuring his groin after scoring in Champions League against NK Maribor: "I'm not worried. We don't cry on injuries. When a player is injured, play another one. It's our…
