Guardiola: Torres perfect for Atletico The coach lauded Diego Simeone's decision to bring the former club captain back to the Vicente Calderon and believes they pose a threat to Bayern's Champions League chances By Miles Chambers Jan 16, 2015 23:36:00 Former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola believes that Atletico Madrid have hit the jackpot by bringing Fernando Torres back to the Vicente Calderon. Torres left La Liga for Liverpool in 2007, one year before Guardiola famously took the reins at Camp Nou, and returned earlier this month on loan from AC Milan having flopped at San Siro and Chelsea before that. Football pundits and fans were split over whether Torres would burden another club with his lack of goals, but he stunned arch-rivals Real Madrid on Thursday by scoring a double to knock the holders out of the Copa del Rey at the last-16 stage. Guardiola, who now coaches Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, believes that the Spain international is perfectly suited to life under Diego Simeone's wing in Madrid. ...

"It is a team that has won defending their values and have always taught me that," he told the club website. "With hard work, sacrifice, believing in what you do you can achieve things." Milan 'tracked Cerci for Years' President Silvio Berlusconi reveals Milan “had been tracking Alessio Cerci for three years.” The new signing was present after his first training session, arriving on an 18-month loan from Atletico Madrid in exchange for Fernando Torres. “We have a new arrival that really pleased me, because we had been tracking Cerci for three years,” Berlusconi declared. “Finally he arrived and already promised me he’ll shave off his beard ahead of the next game. “I believe we absolutely have the chance to impose ourselves as the best Italian team of 2015. We must take every game as if it’s the most important and underestimate nobody, starting from Sassuolo on Tuesday. “We must always step out there with the intention of dominating the game, dominating possession and scoring a ton of goals. We have the possibility with this squad and especially our forwards. “I also complimented El Shaarawy on the phone for his brace against Real Madrid. It was a wonderful performance ...
Hazard: Aiming high The Blues head into our penultimate match of the Champions League group campaign in Schalke tonight knowing a victory would see us progress to the knockout stage in top spot, and Eden Hazard is targetting three points from the Veltins-Arena for the second consecutive season. Jose Mourinho’s side have taken four points from the two games on our travels in this season’s competition to date, with a 1-0 win at Sporting Lisbon preceding the 1-1 draw in Maribor last time out. We were drawn alongside Schalke, who are now managed by Former Chelsea player and manager Roberto Di Matteo, at the same stage of last season’s competition, running out 3-0 winners in both matches, with Hazard scoring in the away fixture. ‘I remember we played very well,’ the winger recalls. ‘I scored my first goal in the Champions League, which came on the counter attack. ‘Fernando Torres scored two and it was a very strong performance from the whole team. The atmosphere in German stadiums is always very ...
# Diego Lopez: Fernando Torres more useful for Milan than Mario Balotelli AC Milan goalkeeper Diego Lopez believes the Serie A club are stronger for having replaced Mario Balotelli with Fernando Torres this summer. "We want to get Milan back to where they belong and for this Torres is going to be more useful than Balotelli," Lopez, 32, told a news conference in Milan. "He's a big signing for Milan and he's done great things in his career. His job is to score goals. He's a big player -- already tried and tested, renowned, quick and strong." Lopez, meanwhile, arrived from Champions League winners Real Madrid this summer and says he does not regret the move for a minute.
Fernando Torres has today completed his loan move for AC Milan from Chelsea. The two-year loan deal will see Torres play out the remainder of his Chelsea contract in Italy. Chelsea agreed a deal with Milan on Friday and, now personal terms and a medical have been sorted, the striker has ended his Chelsea misery. Chelsea have replaced Torres with Loic Remy, who signs from QPR. Having signed for Chelsea for £50 million in January 2011, Torres failed to live up to expectations at the Bridge. The 30-year old won the FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League during his time in West London. However, the move is suitable for all parties, including Torres himself who embarks on a new challenge.
LATEST ENGLISH TRANSFER NEWS! UTD AGREES BLIND DEAL! Reports indicate Man Utd have agreed a deal with Ajax to sign utility player Daley Blind for £14 million. Fernando Torres ends his Chelsea *** with a move to AC Milan. And Jose Mourinho has triggered a £8 million release clause in striker Loic Remy at QPR Rangers to replace the Spain international striker. Meanwhile, Utd new signing Marcos Rojo will not make his Red Devils debut at Burnley because the Argentina star defender has yet to be granted a work permit following his move from Champions League club Sporting Lisbon. But British record transfer holder Angel Di Maria is ready to feature for Louis van Gaal aka Serial Winner's side in a match starting at 13 45 hours at Turf Moor.
Chelsea have agreed an £8million fee with QPR for star striker Loic Remy, according to various reports. The Blues are on the hunt for a new forward after letting Fernando Torres join AC Milan on a two-year loan on Friday, pending the Spaniard agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. And Jose Mourinho appears to have acted quickly in the transfer market by moving for the France international, who played at this summer's World Cup. Remy enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with Newcastle last season, finishing as the club's top scorer with 14 Premier League goals. However, the 27-year-old has always made it perfectly clear he wishes to play in the Champions League and now looks set to get his wish with Chelsea. Remy has a staggered buy-out clause with the Hoops, meaning clubs in Europe's top competition can pay just £8m to land the striker, whereas teams such as Newcastle would have to pay a higher fee. Earlier on in the summer the Frenchman look destined to join Liverpool after the Reds met that ...

Atletico Madrid have reportedly begun negotiations with Chelsea over the possible transfer of Andre Schurrle to the La Liga champions. This would be at least the third time that the two clubs have discussed transfers this summer, however this time the movement of players could be in the opposite direction. Atletico were impressed by Schurrle’s performances in the World Cup, and sense an opportunity as the player was by no means a regular starter for Jose Mourinho’s team last season. Eden Hazard will no doubt start the season as first choice winger this season, and it remains to be seen whether Schurrle will be able to oust Willian from the other flank, whilst also fending off Oscar and Mohamed Salah in the fierce competition for attacking players Chelsea has. It would make sense for Chelsea to sign a foreign player. Currently they have one more than the Uefa Champions League squad lists will allow, and it does not appear that Jose Mourinho has decided on a player that he would be happy to lose from hi ...
A long-term link to Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old Uruguay international joining Jose Mourinho's side would be dependent on a number of factors, not least Chelsea's need to comply with UEFA regulations. Apart from already having exceeded the quota for foreign players over the age of 21 by one -- with Didier Drogba taking them to 18 -- the London club are also increasingly conscious of Financial Fair Play. It is expected that Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech could move on, however, and that any purchase of Cavani would finally see the long-mooted sale of Fernando Torres. Furthermore, the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Everton brought in 28 million pounds, freeing up more funds. Sources told ESPN FC that Chelsea have been quoted a price of 40 million pounds by PSG for Cavani, and that the player is eager to move to Stamford Bridge -- despite a public declaration that he would prefer to stay in France. There has already been preliminary contact between the London club and the player's camp, although Chelsea are s ...
MOURINHO: OUR BRIGHT BLUE FUTURE Jose Mourinho has been discussing his hopes&expectations for some of the younger players working under his guidance in pre-season. {Blues out to change their reputation as a 'graveyard' for young talent by making 1st-teamers of Isaiah Brown,Dominic Solanke&Lewis Baker}{If these 3 Chelsea kids DON'T play for England you can blame me says Jose Mourinho}. Jose Mourinho has admitted that he will have to get rid of one of his foreign players as Chelsea desperately try to find a buyer for Fernando Torres. The return of Didier Drogba means Chelsea’s anticipated 1st-team squad has one too many foreign players under Premier League&Champions League rules relating to the home-grown quota. Clubs can only name 17 foreign players over the age of 21 in their official 25-man squads&Chelsea have 18 overseas stars who are realistically vying for those places. Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, wants to offload £50M flop Torres, but clubs are being put off by the £20M asking price&the Spaniard ...
Confirmed: Chelsea reach agreement for Diego Costa Chelsea have reached an agreement for the signing of Atletico Madrid’s Spanish international Diego Costa, according to the club’s official website. They have met his purported £32 million buy-out clause, allowing them to sign the striker. Costa has been a long-term target for Chelsea, with manager Jose Mourinho keen on revamping his attacking options this summer. Samuel Eto’o has already departed the club, with both Fernando Torres and Romelu Lukaku consistently linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge this summer. The Brazil-born Spanish international had a sensational season for Atletico Madrid as the club won La Liga and reached the Champions League final. Atletico came close to winning the latter competition, only to be thwarted by a late equaliser. They then conceded three goals in extra time to lose. Chelsea disappointed last season, finishing third in the Premier League despite the return of legendary manager Mourinho. They were also elim ...
Which Manchester City star is homesick and looking to move his family to Madrid? Negredo looks set to call time on his brief Man City career because of homesickness Alvaro Negredo wants to quit Manchester City for a return to Spain with Atletico Madrid. The striker, who Etihad fans call “The Beast” scored 23 goals in his first season with City, asManuel Pellegrini's men lifted both the Premier League title and Capital One Cup. But Negredo and his family have struggled to settle in England and his form became affected by homesickness and a shoulder injury to such an extent that he failed to hit the target in the final four months of the campaign. His slump saw him lose his place in the Spain squad forthe World Cup in Brazil, with Vicente Del Bosque opting to take Fernando Torres and Diego Costa. Negredo hopes City accept Atletico’s offer to hand back the full £20m that they paid Seville for Negredo last summer. The La Liga champions and Champions League finalists see him as an ideal replacement forC ...
Today's Football Titbits Manchester United have moved ahead of Chelsea as they attempt to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas because they will not be in next season's Champions League and are not viewed as direct rivals by the La Liga club. Diego Costa's £32m move to Chelsea from Atletico Madrid will be the Premier League club's biggest deal of the summer and will also spark the exits of strikers Fernando Torres and Demba Ba Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola wants to sell midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, and the 29-year-old Germany international could be a target for Manchester United. And finally German striker Stefan Kiessling has taken his World Cup 2014 omission in good humour by featuring in an advert with the tag line, "It is always best at home.
Diego Costa scores a screamer in training as he steps up recovery The Spain striker scored a brilliant strike in his side's latest practice session as he fights to recover full fitness before the World Cup gets underway Spain received something of a boost in their World Cup preparations after Diego Costa got back to scoring ways in some style in training. Coach Vicente Del Bosque took a gamble and included the Atletico Madrid ace in his final squad despite the 25-year-old forward struggling to recover from a muscle injury he sustained during last month's Champions League final defeat to city rivals Real. Del Bosque are hoping that Costa – who scored 36 goals in all competitions last season for his club side – will spearhead the team’s attack ahead of Fernando Torres and David Villa. Although his recovery has been slow, the Brazil-born attacker trained normally with the Spain squad on Monday ahead of their final friendly before the World Cup and struck an impressive left-footed goal during their late ...
Costa in, Llorente out - Spain's final World Cup squad revealed Manchester City pair Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas will not be part of la Roja's team in Brazil after Vicente Del Bosque confirmed who had been cut on Saturday May 31, 2014 12:00:00 PM Spain have announced their 23-man squad which will travel to Brazil this summer for the World Cup, with Diego Costa making the cut while Fernando Llorente, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo have all been omitted. Costa converted from a Brazil international to la Roja earlier this season and had a stunning season with Atletico Madrid, starring as they won La Liga. However, the 25-year-old has been a major fitness worry throughout the last few weeks, with a recurring hamstring problem limiting his participation in the final league match and the Champions League final. While Costa has been picked to help Spain defend their crown in South America this summer, Juventus forward Fernando Llorente and Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo miss out. Fernando Torres might ...
Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the world's most marketable footballer. The 29-year-old Portuguese forward may have missed out on La Liga title but, after ending the season by winning the Champions League, Ronaldo can look forward to the World Cup knowing he is the most liked player on the planet. It is based on marketing research that involved a global study looking at measured perceptions of over 6,500 people in 13 countries. The index used measured the public perception of eight different attributes of the players including appeal and influence on modern society. Almost 84 per cent of people surveyed had heard of Ronaldo with 72 per cent revealing they 'liked' the Former Manchester United star. Lionel Messi was second ahead of his Barcelona team-mate Gerard Pique whose global presence has risen thanks to his relationship with singer Shakira. Fernando Torres may have struggled for form since his move to Chelsea, but being well known in markets like China has contributed to the strik ...
BLUES DUO NAMED IN SPAIN FRIENDLY SQUAD Fernando Torres and Cesar Azpilicueta have been included in a 19-man Spain squad to face Bolivia in a friendly next Friday. The game represents the last opportunity for players to stake a claim before Vincente Del Bosque trims his provisional 30-man World Cup squad down to 23 on 2 June. The Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid players named in the provisional group have been omitted for Friday's game after taking part in the Champions League final, while Alvaro Negredo, Jesus Navas and Fernando Llorente have also been left out. Former Chelsea attacker Juan Mata joins Torres and Azpilicueta in the squad. Spain squad to play Bolivia on Friday: Pepe Reina, David De Gea, Gerard Pique, Raul Albiol, Javi Martinez, Jordi Alba, Cesar Azpilicueta, Alberto Moreno, Zavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Santi Cazorla, Ander Iturraspe, Cesc Fabregas, Juan Mata, David Silva, Pedro Rodriquez, Fernando Torres, Gerard Deulofeu.
Spain's defensive worries. Vicente Del Bosque had been expected to whittle his 30-man preliminary squad down to 23 players on Sunday, but the Spain coach elected instead to bide his time until the FIFA deadline for registration on June 2. Spain play Bolivia in a friendly match in Seville on May 30, and for that encounter Del Bosque has named a squad of just 19 players; Real Madrid and Atletico's Champions League final has earned players from those sides a week off. The midfield and forward lines have been the most scrutinised in the Spanish media; the question of whether Fernando Torres will travel and whether Diego Costa's recent injury woes during Atletico's final push have cost him a place have overshadowed doubts about Spain's defence in Brazil. Juanfran has had a standout season for Atletico but also limped from the field at the Estadio da Luz this past Saturday; the extent of his injury currently unclear. The back four is an issue for the reigning champions, who have rarely enjoyed the wealth of ric ...
Exclusive: Chelsea Set to Unveil New £79m Trio Strike-Force The Blues boss is ready to offload Fernando Torres and Demba Ba whilst Cameroonian veteran Samuel Eto’o will not be offered a new deal this summer, leaving plenty of room for a new look Chelsea attack. CaughtOffside understands that the West London club have already agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid to sign striker Diego Costa but any official announcement will be held back until after the Champions League final between the La Liga title holders and Real Madrid next weekend. Chelsea are also in advanced talks to sign Bayern Munich forward Mario Mandzukic who has already seemingly played his last match for the Bundesliga side. Pep Guardiola opted to drop the Croatian international from his DFB Pokal final squad as they edged past Borussia Dortmund side to win the German cup and Mourinho is ready to meet the Allianz Arena side’s £25m price-tag. Mourinho will also look to bring in PSG forward Ezequiel Lavezzi with a £22m bid for the Argentin ...
Eden Hazard accepts criticism from Jose Mourinho. Eden Hazard has accepted the criticism doled out to him by Jose Mourinho and says he knows he needs to improve in a number of areas if Chelsea are to avoid having another trophyless season next year. Mourinho's criticism came in light of the defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final and comments the Belgium international made about the way the Blues were prepared for the match at Stamford Bridge, claiming they didn't set up to play football. Hazard's manager didn't respond kindly to those words and hit back by claiming he does not sacrifice himself for the team enoughand that he has a lot he needs to improve on. Fernando Torres had put Chelsea ahead in the first half of that match and the momentum was going with the Blues until Atletico equalised just before half-time, with many citing Hazard's failure to track his man as being the reason for conceding. Diego Simeone's side took the initiative into the second half and eventually ran ou . ...
Spain’s provisional 30-man squad for the Fifa World Cup finals in Brazil was named by manager Vicente Del Bosque. The manager omitted Alvaro Arbeloa and Isco, while giving a chance to Daniel Carvajal and Ander Iturraspe for their first caps for Spain. Alvaro Arbeloa’s omission is a huge surprise as the versatile defender was part of the Spain sides that have won back-to-back European Championships and the World Cup in the last six years. Arbeloa’s club-mate Carvajal has earned a spot due to his fine form and will definitely be first choice for the right-back position. Highly-rated Real Madrid playmaker Isco is among those who have missed out, as well as Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado, who has had a poor campaign in the English Premier League for Tottenham. Fernando Torres has earned himself a place for the striker’s role. The defending champions have included seven players from Barcelona and four each from Champions League finalists Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Del Bosque will announce his ...
HARD FACTS:-ATLETICO'S ENTIRE TEAM COSTS £20 MILLION LESS THAN FERNANDO TORRES After Atletico Madrid knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League, Jose Mourinho said that the Spanish club held a big advantage as they'd had the same coach for the last three seasons. "It's the difference between one year and three and it's a big difference...they are a very good side, very adapted to the ideas of this manager - every player fits his idea of how to play," he said. Maybe so Jose, but when you look at the cost of the two starting line-ups that took the field on Wednesday night, it really brings home just how impressive Atletico's victory was. That is because Chelsea's starting line-up cost more than SIX TIMES as much as Atletico's line-up, with three Chelsea players – Willian, Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres – each costing more all by themselves than the ENTIRE Atletico team. Indeed, £50m flop Fernando Torres cost a whopping £20m more than all 11 Atletico players put together. The most expensive signing ...

From the Chelsea stable: Reflecting on our 3-1 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, David Luiz felt the goal we conceded on the stroke of half-time was the turning point. With the tie goalless following last week's first leg in Spain, an away goal for Diego Simeone's side was always going to make it a difficult evening for the Blues. Fernando Torres had given us the lead against his former club when he swept home a Cesar Azpilicueta cross after 35 minutes, but the visitors restored parity nine minutes later through Adrian Lopez. 'They scored when they needed to score,' said David Luiz. 'We controlled the game for the first 40 minutes and then we conceded a goal at the end of the first half. They were able to counter attack and they dictated the game.' The balance of the contest swung in Atletico's favour early in the second half when Diego Costa scored a penalty, sandwiched in between two headers, from David Luiz and John Terry, which had gone close. Their third goal, scored by Arda Turan following ...
Fernando Torres, Sergio Aguero, Radamel Falcao and now Diego Costa... Atletico Madrid's conveyor belt of Strikers ‘There will never be another like him,’ said Atletico Madrid fans when they waved goodbye to Fernando Torres in 2007. Then Sergio Aguero reached the First Team and soon ‘El Nino’ was forgotten. Aguero was irreplaceable… until he was replaced by Radamel Falcao. And when the Colombian was sold last summer he left a gaping hole in the Atletico team, but only for as long as it took Diego Costa to fill it. Assisting some of these strikers have been star names such as Diego Forlan and David Villa, and before Torres they had the likes of Christian Vieri and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. With this regular supply of striking talent, it is no wonder Diego Simeone has said he will give Costa his blessing if he leaves to join Chelsea at the end of the season. 'We get players and make them better,' he said ahead of the Champions League semi-final first leg and the search is already on for the next gem ...

Fernando Torres: Has scored 7 goals in his last 7 Champions League starts
Eden Hazard admitted Chelsea are "not made to play football" following Wednesday's exit from the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid. Jose Mourinho's men took the lead through Fernando Torres but goals from Adrian Lopez, Diego Costa and Arda Turan ensured Atletico set up an all-Madrid final in Lisbon next month. And after the match Hazard suggested that chasing the game with Diego Simeone's men defending in numbers was never going to suit his side. "I don't know what we lacked," he told beIN Sport. "After scoring, we had the game in our hands. Maybe they wanted it more than we did... It was an intense game. Beautiful to watch with opportunities. "I'm sad but logic has been respected bacause they deserveed to qualify. "Chelea is not made to play football. We're good on the counter, a little bit like Real against Bayern. "We did it well tonight since we scored. But their goal hurt us before the break. We failed to make the difference in the second half. "Often, I'm asked to do it all by myself ...

Adrian Lopez cancelled out Fernando Torres' opener as Chelsea and Atletico Madrid go into the halftime break with the scores tied at 1-1 in their Uefa Champions League semi-final tie.
As was the case last night, there is just the one game on tonight. Chelsea host this seasons surprise team, Atletico Madrid. With the tie balanced at 0 - 0 there is much to play for. Perhaps more intriguing are the connotations surrounding this clash. Diego Costa will probably be a Chelsea player next season and I wouldn't put money against Fernando Torres maybe going the other way. Also with Real Madrid in the final Jose Mourinho will be desperate to put one over his former employers while they will be desperate to do likewise. Add to that the fact that Carlo Ancelotti is a Former Chelsea manager and you can see why many want Chelsea in the final. Atletico however, will be desperate to make it the first Champions League final between two teams from the same city. Intriguing is the word. Kick off is at 19:45. See you then.
ON THIS DAY: Fernando Torres rounded Víctor Valdés to send Chelsea through to the Champions League final.
Chelsea force Athletico Madrid to goalless draw (CNN) - Jose Mourinho's Chelsea exerted a tactical stranglehold on hosts Atletico Madrid to earn a goalless draw in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal Tuesday. If the expectant capacity crowd in the Vicente Calderon were anticipating a night of free-flowing football then they would have quickly become disillusioned as Mourinho's men restricted Atletico to few chances. Chelsea, who entertain the Spanish League leaders in the return leg in London next Wednesday, also had to cope with losing goalkeeper Petr Cech and captain John Terry to injury in each half, but Atletico were unable to take full advantage. After central defensive lynchpin Terry limped off, Atletico had their best spell with Gabi forcing a fine save from Cech's veteran replacement Mark Schwarzer while Raul Garcia and substitute Arda Turan headed wide from Juanfran crosses. Chelsea's Fernando Torres, returning to the club where he spent six successful years, cut a lone figure up fr ...
Demba Ba and Andre Schurrle were introduced but never threatened to replicate their Champions League heroics against Paris Saint-Germain, while Fernando Torres produced what has become a trademark display of enthusiastic nothingness.

But having been overlooked for the majority of the campaign, Demba Ba has struck twice in a week to offer the Portuguese a reminder of his talents in front of goal as the run-in intensifies both domestically and in Europe. Goal's Alec Fenn said: "The striker has barely had a look in behind Samuel Eto'o and Fernando Torres at Stamford Bridge this season. "However, the 28-year-old delivered the perfect response when handed the opportunity to prove his worth this week. "He struck the crucial second goal as Chelsea saw off Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League before scoring the only goal of the game against Swansea to breathe new life into the Blues' bid to win the ...
Inter Make Mikel Move Inter are planning to continue their Premier League recruitment drive with a move for Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel. Inter president Erick Thohir is understood to have been in attendance at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night for the Blues’ 2-0 Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain. And the midfielder, who has started just nine Premier League games during Jose Mourinho’s second spell with Chelsea, is considered a realistic transfer target by the Nerazzurri. Thohir is developing relationships with a number of Premier League clubs ahead of a planned summer overhaul at San Siro. Inter have already secured the signing of free agent Nemanja Vidic, who will leave Manchester United at the end of the season. As revealed by Goal, the Serie A side also maintain an interest in Fernando Torres, but believe a season-long loan deal for the striker could be difficult to secure and have made Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko their No.1 target for the summer.
FROM: Phil McNulty Chief football writer on Atletico Madrid v Chelsea "Chelsea may feel an element of relief that they have avoided the European superpowers of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final - but any underestimation of Atletico Madrid will be fatal. "Jose Mourinho is renowned for his meticulous preparation and will have noted the relentless manner in which Diego Simeone's team deservedly overcame Barcelona in the quarter-final. The atmosphere in Atletico's Vicente Calderon will be thunderous and Chelsea will face a team as hungry and driven as their outstanding Argentine coach. "The debate will continue over the availability of Thibaut Courtois, in his third season on loan at Atletico and, of course, Fernando Torres will return to his boyhood club, where he still retains iconic status."
Chelsea will be hoping their outstanding home record will be enough to help them overturn a two-goal deficit when they play Paris St Germain in the quarterfinal, second-leg of the Champions League on Tuesday. Manager Jose Mourinho has never lost a quarter-final tie in the competition, in his time with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, and is desperate not to break that run at Stamford Bridge. Their 3-1 defeat in Paris last week, when a last-minute goal gave PSG a two-goal cushion, made life difficult for the English side, who won the Champions League in 2012. But it is their home form - with 15 wins out of 17 in the league this season - that gives Chelsea fans most hope. "It's the worst time of the season to get results like this but we are a different team at Stamford Bridge with our fans behind us," midfielder Andreas Schuerrle said. "It will be difficult but it is not impossible." Mourinho has bemoaned a side "with no strikers" due to the lack of form of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel ...

EPL: Chelsea return to top spot, hammer Stoke 3-0 (AFP)— Chelsea regained top spot in the Premier League thanks to a straightforward 3-0 win over shot-shy Stoke City at Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s late kick-off. Goals from Mohamed Salah, Frank Lampard and Willian were enough for Jose Mourinho’s side to move ahead of Liverpool, who play West Ham on Sunday, by a point. Victory also ended a run of two successive defeats and maintained Mourinho’s remarkable record of never having lost at home in the Premier League. And it will also have acted as a timely boost ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final decider against Paris Saint-Germain, where Chelsea must overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit if they are to reach the last four. Fernando Torres, the Spain forward, was the early focus of attention after being restored to the Chelsea starting line-up. Wednesday’s defeat in Paris had seen Mourinho start with no recognised front-man and the Portuguese manager complained afterwards that he lacked ...

Hard Tackle Jose Mourinho labelled Chelsea’s defending 'a joke' and then launched an extraordinary attack on Fernando Torres. Mourinho blew his top after Chelsea’s chaotic defending led to three goals that leave his side with a mountain to climb to avoid a Champions League quarter-final exit. The Chelsea boss then questioned whether Torres, axed from the game before coming on as a second-half substitute, was ‘a real striker’. Nonetheless, there is another game to come in this quarter-final, and Chelsea need only a 2-0 win at home to progress — but that target presumes PSG do not score, an assumption few will be making after this. They may be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who limped out here with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, and Edinson Cavani was not at his best either, but ultimately it made little difference. Ezequiel Lavezzi, PSG’s star performer, was a double handful and just when Chelsea thought they had escaped with a flesh wound, Pastore arrived to inflict an injury from which i ...
A number of Barcelona players would like to see Fernando Torres arrive on a possible loan deal this summer,[football] direct newsunderstands. However,[FDN]understand that a number of Spanish international players at Barcelona are growing keen on the idea of Torres joining the club on a short-term basis. CHELSEA CRUISED INTO Uefa Champions League QUARTER FINAL: Chelsea cruised into the quarter-finals of the Uefa Champions League with a 2-0 win (3-1 on aggregate) over Galatasaray at Stamford Bridge. The hosts got the evening off to a dream start as Samuel Eto'o fired them in front after just four minutes, beating the offside trap to latch onto Oscar's through ball as his strike was too strong for the hand of goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Chelsea continued to control proceedings but had little joy in front of goal, with Eden Hazard, Willian and John Terry all spurning chances, but Gary Cahill doubled the scoreline just before the break, slamming home from close-range after Muslera pushed Terry's header into his path. The visitors rarely threatened and Didier Drogba was largely subdued on a frustrating Chelsea return. The Blues came close to extending their lead late on as Muslera denied Hazard and then substitute Fernando Torres with smart saves on a comfortable evening for Jose Mourinho's men.
Didier Drogba could be back at Chelsea next season - because of Financial Fair Play. Ivorian star Drogba returns to Stamford Bridge tonight for the first time since winning the Champions League with his final kick in a Blues shirt in Munich in 2012 . Drogba, who will be presented with a "thank you" gift for his eight years of Chelsea service before kick-off, aims to help eliminate Jose Mourinho's side and send Galatasaray through to the last eight. But Mourinho's frustrations with the limitations of his attacking options, plus Drogba looming availability for nothing, make a 12-month final hoorah as a Chelsea player increasingly likely. Mourinho would like to get rid of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba this season, while there are significant doubts over on-loan Romelu Lukaku's Blues future. But Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea hierarchy are determined to keep within the parameters set by UEFA's FFP provisions. It will cost Chelsea around £45million to prise prime target Diego Costa out of Atlet ...
The World Cup is only 88 days away, with the opening match between host nation Brazil and Croatia taking place in Sao Paulo on 12 June.     BBC Sport, with the help of European football expert Andy Brassell, is taking a weekly look at happenings from across the world of football and what impact they could have on the tournament in the summer.     Chelsea's Fernando Torres faces an uphill battle to secure a place in Spain's World Cup squad     Andy Brassell: "Atletico Madrid centre forward Diego Costa shows no sign of losing form. The 25-year-old hit his 30th goal of the season (22 in La Liga) in Saturday's 1-0 win over Espanyol, which kept Diego Simeone's men on the title trail.     Dazzling Diego     Diego Costa has scored in every Champions League game he has played this season. He has hit seven goals in five appearances in Europe's top club competition.     "It continued a fantastic week for the Brazilian-born forward, who also scored twice in the emphatic Champions League win over AC Milan ...
MOURINHO: FINE MARGINS Posted on: Fri 14 Mar 2014 The Blues will go in search of a third consecutive win at Villa Park tomorrow, but with the match preceding Tuesday's Champions League clash with Galatasaray, Jose Mourinho is keen for his side to take one game at a time. Having conducted his previous two press conferences at Stamford Bridge, today's was held in the familiar surroundings of Cobham, where the Portuguese was greeted by the assembled media. Mourinho reported tomorrow's game comes too soon for injured defenders David Luiz and Ashley Cole, but he may be able to call on the services of Fernando Torres, after the striker limped out of the warm-up ahead of last week's win against Tottenham. 'We will have no David and no Ashley,' he said when asked on the availability of the defensive pair. 'Fernando is much, much better. Maybe I'll take him tomorrow, maybe I won't take him and I'll try everything for Tuesday. It depends on today's training and conversations after the session, but yesterday he look ...

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RESULT Real Madrid laid down a marker in this season's Champions League by inflicting a 6-1 thrashing on Schalke 04 in a one-sided last-16 first leg while Galatasaray and Chelsea drew 1-1 on Wednesday. Real's galactico-laced frontline of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals each as the Spaniards secured only their second win in 26 trips to Germany and effectively booked their spot in the last eight. Fernando Torres's early goal for Chelsea was cancelled out by Galatasaray's Aurelien Chedjou in the second half. CAN MADRID GO ALL THE WAY AND WIN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE?
Chelsea’s Lampard: We should have scored more Chelsea veteran Frank Lampard believes the team were good for more goals in their 1-1 Champions League draw with Galatasaray on Wednesday night. The Blues scored inside ten minutes through Fernando Torres at the Turk Telekom Arena before Aurelien Chedjou equalised for the Istanbul giants with 25 minutes remaining in the contest. However, Lampard felt it could have been a different story if the West London club were able to express their dominance by scoring more goals in the opening 45 minutes. "We were disappointed at half-time we weren't more than 1-0 up because we played well, we controlled it,” he told Sky Sports after experiencing a passionate Cimbom crowd in Istanbul. "They didn't have many chances and we had four or five good counter-attacks and we're disappointed we didn't make more of them. "Certainly the crowd (played a part), I don't know about the tactics because you always expect them to have a period, and they had a big period in the second h ...
Galatasaray v Chelsea: five Champions League talking points | Marcus Christenson Fernando Torres strikes first blow for England after three blanks but Chelsea show they do not have the firepower to win the competition this season 1 Chelsea show early on that they are a team with a striker Much of the build-up was dominated by José Mourinho's comments that he "does not have a striker" but it took Fernando Torres only nine minutes to score. There is no denying that the Spaniard has been a huge disappointment since his £50m move from Liverpool but he did at least look fired up and did not hesitate when César Azpilicueta presented him with a chance that was more difficult than it looked. In fact, the strange goal celebration, when he and Branislav Ivanovic pressed their foreheads against each other for about 10 seconds with mad, staring eyes, almost seemed to say: "In your face José, you do have a striker." 2 José Mourinho on hand to save the Premier League Perhaps it should come as no surprise that it w ...
BY ALAN SMITH Arsène Wenger's gamble on Yaya Sanogo paid off against Liverpool and offered great promise for Arsenal's future Few expected the French Under-21 international to start against Liverpool but the striker did not disappoint. There was much gnashing of teeth amongst Arsenal fans when Sunday’s teamsheet came out. Yaya Sanogo? Why is he playing in a big game like this? What about Olivier Giroud? Even Nicklas Bendtner was thought a better option than a raw 21-year-old yet to start a game since joining last summer. Arsène Wenger, however, had other ideas. Anxious to rest Giroud ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie with Bayern Munich, Arsenal’s manager took something of a gamble by throwing Sanogo into this FA Cup tie. You have to say that the gamble paid off, too. Most importantly for Wenger, Liverpool left London with nothing to show for their efforts. And pleasingly for the striker, Sanogo did not let anyone down after battling gamely against two accomplished centre-halves to play ...
City give Chelsea the blues as Pellegrini silences Mourinho Chelsea's interest in this season's FA Cup competition was ended on Saturday night following a comprehensive 2-0 defeat by Manchester City at the Etihad. A first half strike from Stevan Jovetic, complemented by a well-taken goal from substitute Samir Nasri in the second period, gave Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini cause to cheer following the Citizens' recent home Premier League defeat at the hands of the Blues. Outspoken in the build-up to the cup tie with City, Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho was dealt a harsh dose of reality as Chelsea were well beaten by Pellegrini's men, many of whom saw the game as an opportunity to prove a point to the Chilean whose team selection was clearly influenced by the Citizens' forthcoming Champions League collision with Barcelona. With the notable, and maybe telling exception of John Terry, it was as you were for the Blues starting XI which had a familiar ring to it as far as Pellegrini, his players and Manche ...
Just like Reina, the Uruguayan (Luis Suarez) had massive boots to fill when he took over the responsibility of leading the line following the departure of Fernando Torres, but boy has he done it. After signing from Dutch side Ajax for a reported £22.8 million transfer fee in 2011, Suarez has gone on to become one of the best players in world football. Despite his problems on and off the pitch, nobody on the planet can argue about his talent. The man has scored 62 goals in 96 games for Liverpool in the league, including a seemingly impossible 23 goals in just 19 games this term. He has also been brilliant for his country, scoring a total of 39 goals in just 71 matches. After a summer of nail biting regarding his rumored exit from the club, Suarez recently signed a long-term contract at Liverpool, but whether he carries on his career at Anfield will largely be down to Champions League qualification. One thing is certain sure though and that is the Anfield faithful will wish to see his magic light up the .. ...

On January 31st 2011, Chelsea FC completed the biggest transfer in the history of English football. Spanish striker Fernando Torres moved from Liverpool FC southwards to West London, costing £50million. With his prolific goalscoring at Liverpool and the hefty price tag caused many fans - Chelsea and other - to place huge expectations upon the Spaniards shoulders. And then following a major goal drought (it took Torres nearly three months to score his first goal for the club) many labelled Fernando’s transfer a flop. Though the rest of his career has been anything but consistent, there are moments when Torres shows Chelsea fans exactly why they splashed so much cash on him. A moment that no Chelsea fan will ever forget, is his dash down the pitch at the Camp Nou in the final minutes, when he rounded Victor Valdes, and slotted the ball into the back of the net - solidifying Chelsea’s progression to the Champions League Final in 2012. And his goal to put Chelsea ahead in the Europa League Final against ...
Lets talk some EPL shall we and these are my views so far on what has been a very interesting season so far. 1. If Manuel Pellegrini can sort out Manchester City's away form and defence, i believe that Manchester City will be one of the favourites for the Premier League title. 2. Arsene Wenger needs to get another striker in the January transfer window to aid his title charge. After a good start Olivier Giroud is looking tired and jaded. Clearly he needs help, especially with Arsenal still involved in the Champions League. 3. I think Jose Mourinho has to admit that he got some decisions wrong. The decision to send Romelu Lukaku out on loan is looking more and more short sighted, given the fact that Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto'o have not managed to score 10 goals between them this season. Also, marginalising Juan Mata is not doing the side any good either and Chelsea is looking unusually fragile. Most Chelsea fans will disagree with me, but I believe the team played better under Rafael Benite ...
Champions League Analysis: Why Manchester United Shouldn't Underestimate Olympiacos Konstantinos Lianos Let’s face it people, Manchester United were the luckiest team at the draw in Nyon as Olympiacos are arguably the weakest club in the Champions League’s Last 16. The Greek champions have joined the elite group after finishing second behind French champions Paris Saint-Germain. However, funny things do happen in football now and then. Look at Greece’s triumph in 2004, Porto and Monaco clashing in the Champions League final and Fernando Torres actually scoring the winner against Barcelona. All Manchester United fans are over the moon at the moment, but I am afraid that underestimating Olypiacos would be a terrible idea. The Greek club’s path to qualification wasn’t covered in tulips as they had to face PSG, one of the best clubs in Europe, Benfica, last season’s Europa League finalists, and Anderlecht, the Belgian champions. Therefore, they paid their fair amount of dues to get here. Olympiaco ...
Chelsea recovered from a shock early Southampton goal to win 3-1 and close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to four points again. Stamford Bridge was silenced in the first minute of Sunday's clash when Jay Rodriguez punished an error from Michael Essien - making his first Premier League start since May 2012 - to put Saints ahead. But second-half goals from Gary Cahill, John Terry and substitute Demba Ba produced an emphatic turnaround and kept the Blues on the Gunners' heels. Jose Mourinho made four changes to his side, with midfielders Juan Mata and Essien, striker Fernando Torres and forward Eden Hazard all starting. John Obi Mikel, Frank Lampard, Willian and the injured Samuel Eto'o were the players who made way following the 1-0 Uefa Champions League defeat at Basel in midweek. Saints showed two changes from the side which began last weekend's loss at Arsenal, with Dejan Lovren and Dani Osvaldo replacing Jos Hooiveld and Rickie Lambert.
Mourinho says Chelsea won’t sign any striker in January despite links with Falcao and Martinez The Blues will not be bringing in the AS Monaco or FC Porto hit-man. With rumours aplenty that Chelsea are readying bids for both AS Monaco’s Radamel Falcao and Jackson Martinez of FC Porto, Jose Mourinho has set the record straight. The 50-year-old has revealed categorically that no strikers will be signed by the Blues in the New Year, despite the fact that their current attacking force have not been impressing. “The Porto striker [Martinez]? What I read a couple of days ago that his agent was meeting me in London is not true,” Mourinho was quoted by Goal. “In the January market we won’t buy any striker, we’ll go to the end of the season with Fernando, Samuel and Demba Ba.” Samuel Eto’o has failed to truly deliver on the goal-scoring form the three-time Champions League winner has shown in the past since arriving from Anzhi Makhachkala in the summer. Fernando Torres has shown glimpses o ...
A knee injury will keep defender David Luiz out of Chelsea's Champions League meeting with Basel on Tuesday evening. The West London club revealed on Monday that Luiz is not a part of the 21-man squad for the trip to Switzerland as he requires on-going treatment on the bruised patella that saw him miss Saturday's 3-0 win at West Ham. But manager Jose Mourinho is boosted ahead of the Group E clash by the return to fitness of club-record signing Fernando Torres.
West Ham v Chelsea: Fernando Torres could return as Blues look to halt two-game winless run Fernando Torres could return to aid Chelsea's bid to end a two-match winless run in the Barclays Premier League at West Ham on Saturday. The 29-year-old Spain striker sustained an adductor injury prior to the Champions League win at home to Schalke and was ruled out for three weeks, before returning to training on Thursday. Also in action at Chelsea's Surrey training base was left-back Ashley Cole, who went off during England's friendly defeat to Germany on Tuesday night with a recurrence of a rib injury which first forced him out at Norwich in early October. Cole could return in place of Cesar Azpilicueta or may be held in reserve, with Tuesday's Champions League contest at Basle in mind. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho may ask Torres to make an immediate return against a Hammers side which beat the Blues 3-1 at Upton Park last season. Juan Mata's goal gave Chelsea a half-time lead, but Carlton Cole equalised before M ...

Eto'o too sharp for Schalke. A Timo Hildebrand howler helped Samuel Eto'o set Chelsea on their way to a 3-0 Champions League home win over Schalke on Wednesday night. The Cameroon striker scored his first goal in Europe for the Blues on 31 minutes after a bad mistake from visiting goalkeeper Hildebrand, and fired in a second nine minutes after the break. There was time for Eto'o's replacement Demba Ba to get on the scoresheet too seven minutes from time as Chelsea took control of Group E by matching their margin of victory in Gelsenkirchen on Matchday Three. Following Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle, Blues boss Jose Mourinho made six changes to his starting line-up. Gary Cahill, Cesar Azpilicueta, Andre Schurrle, John Obi Mikel, Willian and Eto'o came in, with David Luiz, Ashley Cole, Juan Mata and Frank Lampard dropping to the bench. Fernando Torres was missing with a leg injury, but there was some confusion over why Eden Hazard was left out of the matchday 18. Before kick-off, Mourinho ...

Joe Hart is set to remain on the Manchester City bench for Tuesday's Champions League match against CSKA Moscow. The England goalkeeper was dropped by manager Manuel Pellegrini for Saturday's match against Norwich City, with understudy Costel Pantilimon keeping a clean sheet on his first Premier League start as City strolled to a 7-0 win. The Romanian is set to keep his place when CSKA travel to the Etihad Stadium for Tuesday's Group D clash, with Pellegrini stating the time is right for Hart to take a break following a series of costly errors culminating in the mistake which allowed Fernando Torres to score Chelsea's late winner against City in the 2-1 victory eight days ago. "For the moment we must support Costel," said Pellegrini. "Joe made a lot of mistakes, he knows. Not just this year, also last year. So I think for Joe it’s a good moment to stop. But I’m absolutely sure that working hard he will -- I don’t know when -- return to his normal position. "But I have confidence in Costel, that ...

LONDON Chelsea head north to play Newcastle on Saturday amid a growing view that Jose Mourinho's side are the team to beat in this season's Premier League title race. Last weekend's Fernando Torres- inspired victory over Manchester City struck a telling blow against one of their major rivals and kept them within two points of leaders Arsenal. Then the midweek League Cup victory over their London rivals at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium confirmed the strength in depth of Mourinho's squad, with the Blues winning 2-0 after both sides made a number of changes. Mourinho's confidence in his team's ability is growing and Torres's performance against City, coming *** the heels of his eye-catching display in the Champions League win at Schalke, provided the firepower that has been largely missing from the Chelsea frontline. The team is beginning to show signs of the strength and solidity that were features of Mourinho's sides during his first spell at Stamford Bridge. EYES ON EPL Ramires is one of the players resp ...

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed in his new autobiography that he talked himself out of signing Petr Cech 12 years ago when he was still playing for French club Rennes, the Daily Star reports. The former United boss had watched Cech as a fresh faced 19-year-old and though he was impressed by what he saw, he decided that the Czech international was just too young. But now at 31 years of age Cech has gone on to see himself become one of the world’s best goalkeepers after Claudio Ranieri decided to take a chance on him two years later by bringing him to Chelsea. Arriving at Stamford Bridge for £7m, he quickly went on to displace Carlo Cudicini in the Chelsea goal during his first season in England. And since the first season he has gone on to pick up three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League along the way. Ferguson also revealed that he missed out on signing the likes of Paolo Di Canio, Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Paul Gascoigne and Ronaldinho during his 27 years at Old Trafford. ...

Mourinho knows who his main man at Chelsea will now be. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho last night insisted he had never doubted Fernando Torres. Torres, in his 100th start for the club, scored a goal in each half to take his tally for the season to four, while Eden Hazard grabbed a late third. It puts Chelsea top of Group E on goal difference and, if they win their next two home games against Schalke and Steaua Bucharest, they will qualify for the knockout stages. Mourinho said: “What has boosted Fernando is the confidence I have in him. I thought Fernando was adapted to this game. I had faith in him and he did well. “It’s good for Fernando to score goals in the Champions League. He must be happy now. But everything started with the way we defended here – and I think my keeper, my four defenders and our midfielders gave us fantastic stability. “The game was good for us. We had a difficult period in the first half – which every team has – and Schalke were dominant. But we were always very compact ...

The Uefa Champions League resumed last night. Fernando Torres fired Chelsea past German side Schalke on the road
Champions League: Centurion Fernando Torres hits brace in Chelsea victory Chelsea were deserving winners as they comfortably soaked up everything that Schalke threw at them in Gelsenkirchen, and the London club now find themselves level with Schalke on six points at the top of the group after Basel were held 1-1 away by Steaua Bucharest in the night's other game. Germany: Fernando Torres marked his 100th start for Chelsea with a brace in a 3-0 win away to Schalke on Tuesday as Jose Mourinho's side safely negotiated a tough test in Champions League Group E. Schalke were punished for slack defending as Torres opened the scoring in the fifth minute and, as the hosts pushed forward in search of an equaliser, the Spaniard netted again at the end of a second-half breakaway. The oft-maligned forward might even have had a hat-trick, but he hit the woodwork with a header and Eden Hazard ignored the chance to pass to the Spaniard when he went through alone to seal the win late on. Chelsea career On moving to Stamford Bridge, Fernando Torres took over the vacant number nine jersey, but took 14 games before he found the net, a joyously received effort on a sodden Stamford Bridge pitch against West Ham. It remained his only goal for the Blues that season but with a rare summer of recuperation following, hopes were high that 2011/12 would see the Fernando Torres that tormented Chelsea so much when he was wearing red. His start had been encouraging, with an opening day display at Stoke which lacked only a goal. That eventually came at Old Trafford in a 3-1 defeat against Manchester United, but his afternoon will be remembered not for the instinctive flick over David De Gea's head but the missed open goal that followed in the closing stages. The Spaniard bounced back quickly to open the scoring against Swansea with a smart touch and finish though, but he was then sent off, forcing him to miss three domestic games. In Europe though, he then netted twice in the 5-0 Champions League victory ...

Ramires brace sinks Steaua Bucharest - Chelsea got their Champions League campaign up and running at the second attempt on Tuesday with a one-sided 4-0 win away to Romanian champions Steaua Bucharest. WRAP: Champions League Stunned 2-1 by Basel at Stamford Bridge in their opening game, Chelsea were eager to make up for lost time and the Europa League champions never looked in trouble beneath the closed roof of Bucharest's Arena Nationala. Ramires broke the deadlock in the 20th minute, with hapless Steaua right-back Daniel Georgievski putting through his own goal on the verge of half-time. Ramires added a third early in the second period, before Frank Lampard's low shot sealed victory in the 90th minute. The one false note for the visitors, beaten on this ground en route to success in the Europa League last season, was an injury to Fernando Torres, who left the fray after hurting his knee in the 11th minute. Schalke's 1-0 win at Basel in the other Group E game leaves them three points above Chelsea at the ...

Steaua Bucharest v Chelsea, 19:45 A loss to Basel was not how Chelsea wanted to start their Champions League campaign under the new manager, and that result has put a greater degree of pressure on their away fixtures than may otherwise have been the case. All-in-all the season has been an odd one for the London club so far, with the manager like a cat amongst pigeons where the squad is concerned, but Schalke proved on Match Day one that Steaua are extremely beatable, and Chelsea should win, with Torres 13/5 on the score/win double at PaddyPower. Eden Hazard will miss this match and Kevin de Bruyne has been left in London, but Fernando Torres is included despite facing a domestic ban following his sending off during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Tottenham.
Lionel Messi has been ruled out of Barcelona's Champions League trip to Celtic after suffering a thigh injury in Saturday night's 2-0. Juan Mata has sprung to the defence of Fernando Torres, insisting his Chelsea team-mate is not a dirty player despite his sending off against Tottenham. Midfielder Lewis Holtby insists Tottenham are not getting carried away by talk of a title challenge. Tottenham are second with 13 points. Alan Pardew has tipped Everton to be this season's surprise package. Newcastle were beaten last time out by Hull City. Jose Mourinho will have the power to decide whether John Terry is given a new contract at Chelsea.
"Fernando Torres is the leading scorer in the Champions League."
Predicted Chelsea Starting Line-Up For Fulham Clash Chelsea welcome local neighbours Fulham to Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening looking to get back on track after a difficult few weeks. The Blues season has taken an unexpected turn for the worse with the West Londoners win-less in their previous four outings. Following a bore 0-0 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho’s men lost to Bayern Munich in a penalty shoot-out in the final of the European Super Cup. Defeat to Everton on Saturday was followed by a shock 2-1 home defeat to FC Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday so Mourinho is expected to rotate his squad once again this weekend. Up front is a particular area of concern right now with none of the clubs three senior strikers finding the target so far this season. New signing Samuel Eto’o was selected in midweek but Fernando Torres could find himself thrust back into the First Team after being left out of the squad entirely against Basel. Willian also failed to impress ...
HARD TACKLE When Jose Mourinho looks at the contribution of Chelsea’s forward line ahead of tonight's Champions League clash with Basle, it makes painful reading. Chelsea’s recognised strikers have spent 443 minutes on the field in five matches and scored just once. Fernando Torres' early strike against Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup in Prague is the only goal scored by a Chelsea forward this season. Demba Ba started against Aston Villa and would have left Chelsea on loan in the transfer window if Romelu Lukaku had decided against a move to Everton for the rest of the season. Lukaku, who was unfortunate to miss in the penalty shootout against Bayern, made three substitute appearances for Chelsea and couldn’t score. Eto’o, who should have headed Ramires’ delicious cross into the net at Goodison Park, completes the quartet of struggling strikers. Before he made his Chelsea debut last Saturday evening, Eto’o last played a competitive fixture for Anzhi in a 3-0 defeat at Zenit St Petersbu ...
Chelsea: Roman Abramovich's best & worst signings Chelsea opinion: Having recently celebrated 10 years as the owner of Chelsea, we look at his best & worst signings It is in a sense hard to believe that it has been ten years since a Russian oligarch pitched up in West London to change the face of English football. On July 1st 2003, Roman Abramovich, billionaire and owner of oil company Sibneft, awoke the sleeping giant that was Chelsea Football Club, after completing his purchase from Ken Bates for £140 million. Since then, the affairs of the club have been anything but dull, as their owner has overseen three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, one Uefa Champions League and a Europa League title being delivered to SW6, whilst employing nine managers in the process, including interims. But activities in the transfer market in this time have frequently caught the eye, notably the signings of Andriy Shevchenko in 2006 and Fernando Torres in 2011, which both broke the British transfer recor ...

Chelsea enter race for Lewandowski with £25m Dortmund star’s Bayern move looking increasingly unlikely Chelsea have turned their attention to Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski as Jose Mourinho looks for a man to lead the line. Mourinho is unconvinced by Fernando Torres and Demba Ba and wants another front man to compete with youngster Romelu Lukaku and new £18million signing Andre Schurrle - who will mainly be used out wide. Lewandowski is looking to engineer a move away from the Champions League finalists but Dortmund are determined not to sell to Bayern Munich, who remain the Pole’s preferred choice. The 24-year-old’s representatives have contacted Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona as well as Bayern over a potential £25m move. Dortmund would be loath to sell to Bayern after the German champions activated wonderkid Mario Gotze’s £32m release clause last month. Last week the club’s chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild: ‘Robert Lewandowski will defini ...
POST-SEASON BRIEFING 2012/13 Posted on: Mon 03 Jun 2013 Club historian Rick Glanvill and club statistician Paul Dutton add their full stop to the season just completed… No handles and no Handel but how we enjoyed the Europa League and the 10 days of being joint champions of Europe: Juan Mata and Fernando Torres were simultaneously holders of the Fifa World Cup, UEFA European Championships, Champions League and Europa League. The Europa was the last of a club-record eight competitions we entered this season, beginning with the Community Shield, and the only one in which absolute success was achieved. (Ten players featured in all eight.) Despite what our north London neighbours may say, qualification for next year's Champions League is a consolation, not a trophy. The Premier League prize money was therefore shared out among the top four thus: Man United £15.095m Man City £14.34m, Chelsea £13.585m Arsenal £12.83m. Still, given the shortfall in the remainder of the competitions, some may depict those a ...
DONE DEAL Chelsea have secured their first signing of the season by capturing German International striker Andre Schurrle from BayerLeverkusen. The German has long been tippedto move to Stamford Bridge and according to The Guardian, he hasalready made the big move for a reported fee of £20m. The deal will see Belgian Kevin De Bruyne move the other way for a year for free. Chelsea have suffered this season up front, and even the January purchase of Demba Ba didn’t make much impact and that’s probably all of a sudden Fernando Torres got in form and scored crucial goals, including thewinning goal in the 2-1 Europa Cup victory over Benfica in Amsterdam. Schurrle scored 11 goals and provided seven assists last term to help secure a third place finish for his side, resulting in a coveted spot in the Champions League for next term. The return of Romelu Lukaku will add more fire-power up front for the Blues after the Belgian finally adjusted to life in England with brilliant performances with West Brom on lo ...
UP CHELSEA.4 LIFE. CHECK THIS OUT. English football expectantly awaits the return of José Mourinho. The Special One livens up most things and his impending appointment at Chelsea will shake up an already bristling European transfer market. But who should top the shopping list that Mourinho will hand to Roman Abramovich upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge? Edinson Cavani (pictured) Mourinho will find a £50m striker in Fernando Torres when he arrives at Chelsea, as well as Demba Ba, signed from Newcastle in January. Yet the club still lack a truly exceptional striker to spearhead an otherwise formidable attacking force. Fortunately an abundance of such frontmen are being touted round Europe’s top clubs. Radamel Falcao looked the most natural fit for Chelsea and Mourinho, but with the Colombian set to join French nouveau riche AS Monaco and Robert Lewandowski expected to swap Borussia Dortmund for their Champions League final conquerors Bayern Munich, Mourinho should now turn to Napoli’s Cavani. Like D ...
Fernando Torres is the first Footballer to win the Uefa Champions League,Europa Cup,Euro Championships and The World Cup.
Napoli to raid Chelsea for Benitez and Torres Napoli are preparing a sensational swoop for Chelsea duo Rafael Benitez and Fernando Torres, according to the Daily Mirror. Blues interim boss Benitez allegedly held promising talks with the Serie A side before heading to the United States for a post-season tour which will bring the curtain down on his reign at the club. And the Spanish manager is confident that he can tempt Torres to Italy too, with Napoli's current marquee man Edinson Cavani set for a summer move away from Stadio San Paolo. Benitez and Torres ended the season in fine style, with Chelsea winning the Europa League and securing third place in the Premier League to qualify for next season's Champions League. Those successes have seen the former Valencia manager linked with Paris Saint-Germain - though the Napoli job is now his, should he choose to accept. Meanwhile Torres' future is up in the air, with Jose Mourinho's imminent arrival casting doubt on where the striker will be next year, despite ...
Chelsea finished the season in third place on 75 points after a 2-1 at home win against Everton thanks to goals from Fernando Torres and Juan Mata. With a season that saw automatic Champions League qualification as well as an Europa League title in the books, the focus now moves to improving for next season and the long speculated changes that could be coming. Outgoing interim manager Rafa Benitez thinks that the new manager will have an easier time than he did thanks to the progress they’ve made with young players this year. Benitez said on the Chelsea website, “The team is now much better and the new manager will have an easier task because he will have more quality and experience, and he will start pre-season…With young players we say it is a team in transition with people like Mata, Oscar, Hazard, Marin, Moses. They are new players and they are doing well. They will be even better next year so if you talk about players like Oscar, Hazard, Mata – the three amigos are getting better every day s ...

In club level European finals, expect a late crucial goal being headed in off a Juan Mata corner. 3. Chelsea have had 3 European finals. John Terry captained one and lost. He wasn't part of the other two but Chelsea won. Karma at play? 4. It's unthinkable there is no talk of buying the likes of Eduardo Salvio and Nico Gaitan by the cash rich clubs. Fernando Torres's dismal performance on his 100th game against Swansea on 9th January was the first time we witnessed our fans jeer Torres but it was a long time coming. If we look at Torres and compare his first 100 games for Chelsea with his first 100 games for Liverpool, it’s easy to see why we’ve been so frustrated with the player. It's nearly 2 years since Torres swapped red for blue, when back then he was regarded as one of the most lethal strikers in European football. Not even the best football betting tips experts could have predicted the demise of once the most fearedstriker in football. Torres goal record in the Champions League as theabove talkSPORT infographic shows seems to compare favourably but that figure includes goals in thrashing of clubs like Nordsjaelland and Genk. Contrast this with his contribution to Liverpool's Champions League cause, when he netted a brilliant winner against Inter Milan in the San Siro, scored a superb and vital goal against Arsenal in the 2008 quarter-finals ...
MATCH DETAILS OF CHELSEA AND MAN U The first half was dominated by the Red Devils as Chelsea endured a torrid first 10 minutes, with Chicharito opening the scoring with a header, before Rooney extended the lead with a fortuitous free-kick. It was truly a tale of two halves, though, as Chelsea controlled the second period, eventually getting their just rewards with a stunning effort from Hazard and a smart finish from Ramires. Sir Alex Ferguson chose to retain the bulk of the side that fell to a disappointing Champions League exit on Tuesday, though he made four changes as Jonny Evans, Shinji Kagawa, Rooney and Chicharito came in, at the expense of Nemanja Vidic, Danny Welbeck, Ryan Giggs and Robin Van Persie. Rafa Benitez, meanwhile, made wholesale changes as only Petr Cech, David Luiz, Oscar and Frank Lampard remained from the side that fell to a 1-0 defeat against Steaua Bucharest on Thursday, with John Terry, Hazard and Fernando Torres amongst those notably excluded. It took just four minutes for the d ...
Rafa Benitez and Fernando Torres' finest afternoon in English football came at Old Trafford. A Saturday lunchtime in March 2009 saw their Liverpool team pump Manchester United 4-1. United led through Cristiano Ronaldo but Torres was soon terrorising Nemanja Vidic, who was eventually sent off for one desperate challenge too many. It was the same week that the Liverpool pair had shared the joy of destroying Real Madrid 4-0 in the Champions League. Their stock had never been higher. It has never reached those levels since. In different colours, Benitez, the unwanted interim, and Torres, the most public and costly of transfer failures, arrive at Old Trafford off the back of another European night, but a 1-0 defeat to Steau Bucharest finds them at a nadir rather than their 2009 zenith levels. As Benitez grumblingly directed from the sidelines, Torres put in another performance to remind of how risky it is paying £50 million for one solitary footballer. Sluggish and on a wavelength somewhere over the Carpathia ...
José Mourinho seriously considering a return to Chelsea José Mourinho managed Chelsea from 2004-07, during which time he won two Roman Abramovich's chances of convincing José Mourinho to relieve him from the repercussions of serial managerial sackings are dependent on Chelsea's owner ceding control of soccer matters to the Portuguese coach. According to close friends, Mourinho is seriously considering a proposal to return to Stamford Bridge this summer, yet wants to do so only if key powers are restored to the manager. Chelsea's transfer policy and significant aspects of team selection -- including the deployment of £50 million record signing Fernando Torres -- have been driven by Abramovich in recent seasons, greatly contributing to the difficulties faced by Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Di Matteo. Though trophies have been won under the structure -- Di Matteo guiding the club to a Champions League and FA Cup double a mere three months after being promoted to "interim First Team coac ...
FIVE POSSIBLE BUYERS OF Wayne Rooney CHELSEA THIS would depend on who takes over from current interim manager Rafa Benitez in the summer. But billionaire owner Roman Abramovich would surely love to see a strike pairing of Rooney and Fernando Torres. Rooney could be just the spark to re-ignite the Spaniard’s faltering career. Man City MONEYBAGS City could easily offer Rooney more money and the chance of competing for all the major trophies at home and in Europe. Rooney would not even have to move house but would face an enormous backlash from United fans. They would hate him for signing for their bitter rivals. PSG THE French club became one of the richest in the world after last year’s takeover by the Qatar Investment Authority. PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has promised to invest £100m in the transfer market and the chance to play alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic and possibly David Beckham would appeal. Premier League ROUND UP Blues beat Baggies, United cruise Chelsea eased the pressure on interim manager Rafael Benitez with a victory at home to West Brom, while Manchester United secured a comfortable win over Norwich thanks to a Shinji Kagawa hat-trick. Rafael Benitez risked angering Chelsea fans midweek by telling them they are "wasting time" jeering him instead of backing the team, but he gave them little reason to moan with a 1-0 triumph over West Brom at Stamford Bridge. A solitary strike from Demba Ba lifted the Blues back above Tottenham in third, boosting their hopes of securing Champions League football. Benitez had been forced to dispute claims of a fall-out with John Terry during the week, but the Chelsea skipper again found himself on the bench alongside Fernando Torres, who made way for Ba. It was the former Newcastle forward who scored the winner from six yards, converting easily after David Luiz nodded Oscar's centre back across goal. It was comfortable thereafter for Chelsea, although mor ...
Dear collectors, customers and fellow sellers... I am not sure who knows what with recent SoccerStarz developments over the past few days but this is what I believe to be the plan having been in conversation with them recently. CHELSEA BLUE BASES There will be 9 blue base Champions League blisters available. There will be no more than 750 blisters produced per figure. This means the 23-man pack is now limited to 4250 units. Paulo Ferreira, Frank Lampard, David Luiz, Fernando Torres, Gary Cahill, Obi Mikel, Oriol Romeu, Ross Turnbull, Ryan Bertrand. This may be the reason why Bosingwa has a blue base although I would imagine there are a lot more than 750 made! The other 13 players (14 inc. Bosingwa) will be detained by SoccerStarz and used in the future in some way to be decided. ARSENAL NEW SQUAD NUMBERS Wilshere will NOT be available in blister pack but will be released in blind sachets. Szcesny will be released within the next month (possibly in limited numbers). IF ONLY. If only Juan Mata had a little more weight like tevez, aguero or messi, he would not be getting shrugged off the ball. If only Eden Hazard would shoot more often, I would compare him to Cristiano Ronaldo. If only Marko Marin would get more playing time, he would make defenders quake in their boots. If only Chelsea would sell Fernando Torres and buy my kid brother, we might still be in the Champions League and still be in the EPL title race. If only Thibaut Courtuois was here to contest for that no.1 position, Petre Cech would not be allowing easy goals into his net. If only wishes were horses, the above wishes would have already come true.
Spanish TV show Punto Pelota claim that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez doesn't want to ruin the pact of 'non aggression' between themselves and Atletico Madrid, which gives Chelsea a free run at long-term target Radamel Falcao and suggested a deal may be in place. Following the continuing failures of goal-shy forward Fernando Torres it's fairly certain that Roman Abramovich would like to bolster their attacking options this summer and it was even rumoured that Falcao was given a tour of London and the club's training facilities, so could he be the man to lead the line for Chelsea next season? I can imagine Falcao arriving after the end of this season but I doubt anything is concrete yet and even if a fee and terms had been agreed, any deal would likely depend on Champions League qualification and he may even want to see who our next manager will be. The forward has been in fine goal scoring form for the past four years for Porto before moving to Atletico Madrid. During his time in Portugal he play ...
Chelsea triumphed 1-0 over Sparta Prague in the Europa League last night. It was Brazilian substitute Oscar who scored the goal, just a minute after coming on, giving Chelsea a 1-0 advantage to take to Stamford Bridge. Here are the key statistics to interest Chelsea fans from the game: * Fernando Torres had more shots on goal than any player on the pitch, with 7. Three of those were on target, but none of them found the back of the net. * Eden Hazard provided the assist for Oscar's goal; his 18th of the season for Chelsea. (10 Premier League, 3 Champions League, 2 League Cup, 2 FA Cup, 1 World Club Cup, 1 Europa League) * Juan Mata's 92 per cent pass completion accuracy was the highest of any midfielder on the pitch. * Mata provided an astonishing five key passes - leading to goalscoring opportunities - for his teammates. * Ramires and Marko Marin were fouled more times than any other Chelsea players (three times each). * Keen to get stuck in, Ramires made more tackles than any Chelsea player, with five. ...
Chelsea captain John Terry has insisted his team- mates must 'liven up' and stop letting the club's fans down. The Blues narrowly avoided an embarrassing FA Cup defeat to League One side Brentford on Saturday, as Fernando Torres' late goal salvaged a 2-2 draw at Griffin Park. And Terry has bemoaned the West London side's lack of fight in that showing, calling for an instant improvement from his team-mates. "We need to liven up a bit and realise the importance to the fans and the club. I was disappointed, because we didn't fight and they wanted it more than us," he said. "Fair play to Brentford, they played well. But we need to liven up. "Champions League football is a must next season. We saw last season, going to the Champions League final, suffering with all the extra games and stuff like that, we ended up finishing sixth in the League. "It's difficult, but we have a squad. The fact is we're not winning any trophies at the moment. "It was ¬disappointing not scoring over two legs of the semi-final and b ...
I wanted my Drog back CHELSEA have tried to re-sign Champions League final hero Drogba — but he is set to snub them for Turkey’s Galatasaray CHELSEA have made a sensational bid to re-sign DidierDrogba. Owner Roman Abramovich made an embarrassing U-turn by sanctioning a move for the former Blues hero. Drog, 34, was offered a six-month deal to the summer with a further one-year option for next season. It was a blunt admission by Red Rom that his £50million golden boy Fernando Torres has flopped. But Drogba turned down Rom’s offer and is set to join Turkish side Galatasaray today. Drogba quit Chelsea for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua in May after scoring the winning penalty in Blues’ Champions League final win over Bayern Munich. He left after Blues offered him a one-year deal when hewanted two. But the Ivory Coast striker failed to settle in China and has been looking for a move during the transfer window. Drogba trained at Chelsea before the African Nations Cup so the club’s top brass believed t ...
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is ready to put the in ground work to woo two top talents he is prepared to break the bank for this summer. The Russian billionaire has set his sights on Napoli forward Edinson Cavani and Malaga midfielder Isco and will fork out as much as a combined £70m to convince the player’s respective employers to sell. The West London side have been looking to bring in a ‘marquee’ striker signing for some weeks and though Demba Ba was brought in this month, and has proven something of a success already, Abramovich is keen to bring in a big name forward who’s capture may well lead to the departure of Fernando Torres. The £50m forward has consistently failed to come close to justifying the fee paid to Liverpool for his services and Roman Abramovich may well be ready to listen to big money offers for the Spaniard. Chelsea will look to bring in Napoli forward with the promise of a move to a side that can challenge for major honours, as evidenced by their Champions League success ...
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will make money no object as he goes for Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao. The West Londonclub will offer the 26-year-old a deal worth in the region of £200,000-per-week, to lure Falcao. The pay package would eclipse the club’s current top earner Fernando Torres, who is understood to earn £175,000-per-week. The staggering salary underlines how serious the current Champions League holders are about signing Falcao, who is viewed as the hottest property in world football. Chelsea are lining up the staggering £10.4m-a-year offer to persuade him to snub Manchester City and Real Madrid to join the Blues. The deal would dwarf the £170,000 Fernando Torres and John Terry bank every week.
==CHELSEA VS ARSENAL ON SUNDAY BY 2:30 PM== With Chelsea struggling for form at Stamford Bridge, the visit of Arsenal comes at an unfortunate time for Rafa Benitez’ side. Chelsea have won four of their last seven matches in the Premier League while Arsenal have an equally worrying record in recent matches. Arsene Wenger’s side will take heart from impressive away form in the league as they are unbeaten in their last 5 matches away from Emirates Stadium . Chelsea’s home form has been poor enough to warrant boos from the home supporters. Predicted Lineups Theo Walcott looks likely to start in the centre forward role for Arsenal while Demba Ba will likely start ahead of the unpopular Fernando Torres. Ba’s form for Chelsea has been impressive since his move from Newcastle and the Champions League winners finally have an outlet for their array of creative players. Chelsea: Cech, Cole, Luiz, Ivanovic, Azpilicueta; Lampard, Ramires; Mata, Oscar, Hazard; Ba Arsenal: Szczesny, Gibbs, Mertesacker, Vermaelen ...

MirrorFootball's Top 10 Expected January Moves : 10) Marouane Fellaini - Everton Chelsea and Manchester United are both interested in Everton's brilliant bruiser. Fellaini would add bite and goals to both those midfields and he'd jump at the chance to play Champions League football. Everton know that a big-money offer would be hard to turn down. 9) Darren Bent - Aston Villa Bent is on the way out of Aston Villa. It has been an open secret for weeks if not months and the impact of Christian Benteke has underlined that fact. The bidding will start at £15million though but to be fair 28-year-old Bent is a proven Premier League striker. 8) Falcao - Atletico Madrid On Deadline Day in the summer Falcao destroyed Chelsea so completely in the Super Cup that he established himself on there and then as the best striker in Europe. The Blues need reinforcements/competition for Fernando Torres and the recruitment of Falcao would represent a monster coup. If the Blues move for him, however, the likes of Real Madrid or ...
CHELSEA SCENARIO IN JANUARY. TRANSFER WINDOW In no change from the norm, Chelsea have already experienced as up-and-down a season as you could get. Lauded for their attacking play at the start of the season with the creative talents of Oscar, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard wreaking havoc on defences, they find themselves at the mid-point of the season off the pace in the title race and out of the Champions League. Rafa Benitez looks to have injected some life back into Fernando Torres but with only other option Daniel Sturridge looking set to leave, Chelsea will need another striker with Radamel Falcao, who has 20 goals in 16 games this season, still being rumoured. A defensive midfielder will be needed with Oriol Romeu's injury and John Obi Mikel's Africa absence in January - and Michael Essien could be recalled from loan to fill the role. Finally, the club still need decent backup for Petr Cech, although that will not be a priority for this window.
I remember when the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Man United feared playing us. Now we have QPR fans thankful they're playing us on Sunday so they have a fair crack at 3 points. 25 points in 19 games, this time last season we had 34 points from 19 games and people were calling that poor. If those same people don't think it's poor now then things have gone bonkers. We've made progress when it comes to contracts but on the pitch I don't see any real progress at all yet. I actually worry we won't get Europa League next season, let alone the Champions League positions people keep rabbiting on about. Our form is like Fernando Torres's Chelsea form, poor but every now and then there is that performance that gives us that glimmer of hope. Come on Rodgers, step it up! JJ.
Chelsea beaten to CWC title * Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Corinthians on Sunday as they became the first Champions League holders to fail to win the Club World Cup for six years. A week and a half after making the wrong sort of history by crashing out of the competition that means the most to them, the Blues were at it again in Japan as they surrendered a trophy for the fourth time already this season. Despite being firm favourites to beat Corinthians in Yokohama, they were outplayed and - more worryingly - outfought by the South American champions, who sealed victory through Paolo Guerrero in front of a partisan crowd of die-hard supporters. Fernando Torres had a golden chance to take the game to extra-time - as Didier Drogba managed so famously in the Champions League final - but the Spaniard missed an absolute sitter and saw a stoppage-time header ruled out for offside after Gary Cahill was sent off. It all added to the feeling that Chelsea's £80million summer overhaul had left them with a team of also ...

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez praised the commitment of his players as the first holders to exit the Champions League at the group stages prepared for Sunday's Club World Cup final against Corinthians. "I've been really impressed with the mentality of the players," Benitez told reporters on Saturday. "Also the commitment, the passion that they show. "Every training session you can see they are keen to learn so all these positives are good for a manager thinking about the future." Chelsea took four games to record a victory under Benitez, who replaced the sacked Roberto Di Matteo, but have won their last three, scoring 12 goals in the process with five of them coming from a resurgent Fernando Torres. "What we are trying to do is trying to keep this winning mentality, trying to keep this hunger in the players," said Benitez, whose Liverpool side were runners-up in 2005. They will be favourites to beat South American champions Corinthians after the London side overpowered Mexico's Monterrey 3-1 in T ...
Monterrey 1-3 Chelsea: European Champions ease through to Club World Cup final Two goals at the start of the second half helped seal Rafa Benitez's side a place in Sunday's showpiece final against Corinthians, as their Mexican opponents faded after the break Chelsea's attacking midfield triumvirate of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata sparkled as the Champions League holders coasted to a 3-1 victory over Monterrey during their Club World Cup semi-final at the International Stadium in Yokohama. A well-taken first-half finish from Mata gave the Blues the lead, before a deflected Fernando Torres strike and an own goal from Darvin Chavez promptly after half-time helped see off the challenge of the CONCACAF champions, although Aldo De Nigris did score a superb consolation late on for the Mexican side. A bright start from the West London side was rewarded in the 17th minute when Mata opened the scoring in style with a sweeping finish after an intricate passing move involving Ashley Cole and Oscar on the left-han ...
Rafa Benitez will be looking for a morale-boosting performance from his Chelsea side in the FIFA Club World Cup. The interim Blues boss has had a tricky few weeks since being installed at Stamford Bridge, to say the least. Unpopular with sections of the support before he even took the job, Benitez's stock fell further when Chelsea failed to win in his first three games in charge. Even a 6-1 win over Nordsjaelland could not lift the gloom as Chelsea left the Champions League at the first hurdle. Although that could not be blamed on Benitez, it seemed symptomatic of his luck so far. However Saturday's win at Sunderland was a welcome shot in the arm, and with Fernando Torres back in the goals, Benitez will be hoping to carry some momentum into the tournament in Japan. Chelsea will be firm favourites to get the better of Monterrey, the reigning CONCACAF Champions League holders, in Thursday's semi-final in Yokohama (kick-off 10.30am GMT). If they do, they will face the winners of the other semi-final, between ...

Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez is refusing to concede defeat in the battle for the Premier League title. The Blues have slipped 10 points behind leaders Manchester United following last weekend's defeat by West Ham but Benitez was encouraged by the 6-1 Champions League thrashing of Nordsjaelland in midweek. "The last game was really good. We can talk about the level of the other team, but it was the Champions League," he said. "The intensity was fantastic and I was really pleased with the performance of the players. At 75 minutes we were still pushing and pushing. "It was the same at 86 minutes, so I think they showed the character they have. "Fernando Torres was working very hard and the team was better attacking. He scored two more goals and hopefully there will be more." Chelsea travel to Sunderland this weekend, while their two nearest rivals face each other in the Manchester derby, with Benitez adding: "My thoughts are clear - we have to win against Sunderland and we can be closer to at least one of the ...

MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 6 FC NORDSJAELLAND 1 Summary A record Champions League victory, complete with some sparkling football, was not enough to see us through to this competition's knockout stages. The fact Juventus won at Shakhtar Donetsk means we finish third in Group E, and will now take part in the reformatted Europa League for the first time. It renders an impressive display at Stamford Bridge relatively meaningless, though we did for the first time score six in a Champions League fixture, with goals coming from a David Luiz penalty after both sides had already missed from the spot, two from Fernando Torres, who had not scored in a month, and one apiece from Gary Cahill (pictured below), Juan Mata and Oscar, following four goals in 20 second-half minutes after Nordsjaelland had pulled one back immediately from the kick-off. The result brings a first win for Rafael Benitez, but the night will be remembered as the one the previous season's Champions League winners bowed out for the first time at the gro ...
Rafa Benitez says Fernando Torres 'can't stop scoring in training'. Maybe Chelsea will win the training Champions League?
Rafa Benitez has attempted to deflect more criticism of Fernando Torres' form in front of goal ahead of Chelsea's do-or-die Uefa Champions League game against Nordsjaelland. Several Chelsea managers have tried a similar tactic, such as praising the 28-year-old's work-rate or number of assists, despite his poor scoring return. But Chelsea's current interim boss, Benitez, has now resorted to applauding the most mundane of contributions from the man Chelsea paid a record £50million for almost two years ago - his defending. "It's not just scoring goals," said Benitez when discussing his fellow Spaniard's latest performance at West Ham United. "We changed his position in corners, for example. If you analyse the corners against, he was amazing. "Two or three times he's cleared the ball and afterwards was just doing man-to-man, because it's what he had to do. So, he's helping the team, in this case to defend. "As a striker, you like him to score goals. Winning is the main thing. Fernando will be an important pl ...
Tottenham have been handed a massive boost after midfielder Scott Parker returned to action following Achilles surgery. Wayne Rooney will not be getting a night off after Sir Alex Ferguson admitted it would be of benefit to him ahead of the Manchester derby. AC Milan have added to speculation they are preparing a January bid for Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli. Chelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez has hailed striker Fernando Torres as "amazing" - at defending corners. Manager Arsene Wenger maintains Arsenal must forget about the Champions League for a while and concentrate on recapturing their domestic form. [AKIL]
Chelsea will be without Frank Lampard (calf) and John Terry (knee), with both expected to be available to face Sunderland at the weekend. Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) is also a doubt but could make the substitutes’ bench. Rafa Benitez has so far appeared to be keen to shake up the trio behind the misfiring Fernando Torres, with Victor Moses and Marko Marin both involved in recent weeks. However, with the Blues in dire need of a victory, the Spaniard could resort to the supporting three that started the season so well. For Nordsjaelland, Jores Okore – who has played every Champions League game for the visitors this season – will sit out after picking up a thigh injury against Esbjerg in November. Ramires, David Luiz, Patrick Mtiliga and Ivan Runje are all one yellow card away from incurring a suspension.

Roberto Di Matteo won Chelsea's first Champions League trophy, Rafael Benitez won it with a squad that costs less than Fernando Torres.
TORRES TREATMENT CAUSING A RIFT A rift is developing in the Chelsea dressing room over the special treatment being received by misfiring striker Fernando Torres. According to the Daily Star, other Stamford Bridge stars are tired of the Spaniard being given countless chances by Blues owner Roman Abramovich, despite being in poor form for some time. The report claims Torres has now become something of an outcast at Chelsea&Roberto Di Matteo dropping him for the dismal 3-0 loss to Juventus in the Champions League last week,is 1 of the reasons for the Italian’s dismissal. It also says there are suspicions among Chelsea players that new interim manager Rafael Benitez was hired in the hope he could coax Torres’s best form out of him once more, after doing so when both were at Liverpool. It appears Blues fans may have to wait a bit longer to see the old Torres,as he was ineffective once more in the 0-0 draw with Man City in the Premier League on Sunday. The 28yrs-old didn’t see much of the ball in what was a ...

Roberto Di Matteo has accepted the blame for Chelsea's 3-0 loss to Juventus on Tuesday which could see the Blues become the first Champions League holders not to progress past the group stage. GettyImages Roberto Di Matteo is facing pressure from fans after Chelsea's third consecutive match without a win • Blog: Di Matteo deserves faith Chelsea need to beat FC Nordsjaelland on the final matchday and hope that Shakhtar Donetsk defeat Juve if they are to have any hope of qualifying from Group E. Di Matteo has come under pressure in recent weeks and his woes were compounded when Chelsea suffered a 2-1 loss to West Brom at the weekend. The Italian sent a warning to his underperforming players by dropping Fernando Torres from the starting line-up in Turin, but the change in tactics proved ineffective and Di Matteo has taken responsibility for the loss. "I'm responsible for the result. I'm responsible for the performance. It's a negative evening for us," he said. "If anyone has to take the blame, it's me. I s ...

THIS IS A MUST TO READ ABOUT MY CLUB.(STAR) Buying an item of clothing that didn't suit us or a gadget that didn't do what we hoped is a mistake many of us make. But not many of us lose our jobs over it. Roberto Di Matteo was a brave man for making it clear to all of Europe that his boss, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, made a 50-million pound mistake in the shape of super-flop striker Fernando Torres. Dropping Torres to the subs' bench for a Champions League game Chelsea couldn't afford to lose was a damning statement on the Spanish international. It was also a necessary one, because Torres has consistently failed in nearly two years at the London club to do what was promised on the packaging: score important goals. Rather than absorb Di Matteo's message, Abramovich shot the messenger. Di Matteo is out, abruptly shown the revolving door at Chelsea that has now swallowed eight managers in nine years. Abramovich can argue that chopping and changing so frequently has worked. Since the billionaire bought Che ...
Speaking in a post-match press conference the Chelsea boss took the blame for the costly defeat that leaves the Champions League holders hopes of qualification from the group stage hanging by a thread. Di Matteo had gambled tactically by leaving misfiring striker Fernando Torres out of the Turin starting lineup, a decision which meant that Chelsea began the game without a recognised centre-forward. "I decided to reinforce midfield and control the left side. I didn't want to give the (Juventus) centre backs a reference point," Di Matteo told reporters. "The first good chance fell to us, Oscar had a second one, Mata found himself in front of the goal, in transition we were dangerous and created chances. The first goal was lucky for Juventus, there was a big deflection. In tight games, the first goal is a lot of times decisive," he said. With rumours beginning to fly that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich may look to replace his coach with former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez or Former Chelsea caretaker Avra ...
Roman Abramovich is running CHELSEA like a monarch, first he fired Jose Mourinho for not playing his favourite 'toy' Andriy Shevchenko, then he got rid of Andre Villas-Boas for not warming to his son's role model Fernando Torres, today he has sacked Roberto Di Matteo, for losing 3-0 against Juventus last, despite helped guide Chelsea to a historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup & oh, Chelsea are third on the Premiership log.
As a loyal Chelsea supporter I just want to say the decision to sack Roberto Di Matteo as manager of the club I find absolutely disgusting an disgraceful of a man that rescued our season after AVB destroyed our position in the league handed us the Champions League an FA Cup, He was the right man for the job an is not his fault he has the pressure of playing a 50m miss firing Fernando Torres an lost a natural leader in Terry through suspension an now injury organising that back four because at the moment our defence an finishing is terrible through mid field with Oscar, Hazard an Mata we are incredible in creating chances but we have no one taking these chances in finding the back of the net we need a natural box to box striker like Falcao now an sell Torres he will cause any manager problems, the club is more important that one bloody player! I truly feel sorry for RDM an wish him all the success I know he will have with his next club...Rant Over
Chelsea in Benitez talks to take over from Di Matteo Rafa Benitez has been lined up by Chelsea to replace Roberto Di Matteo following last night's Champions League humiliation. The Sun says Chelsea have already approached former Liverpool chief Benitez as a possible temporary replacement. Boss Di Matteo will pay the price for dropping Fernando Torres for last night’s make-or-break clash against Juventus. And Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will step up his bid to land Barcelona legend Pep Guardiola as his team face a humiliating early exit from the Champions League. My take No, Roman, no...what's it btw u and Torres?
Chelsea are on the brink of an early Uefa Champions League exit after losing 3-0 at Juventus on Tuesday evening. Fabio Quagliarella diverted Andrea Pirlo's weak shot past the wrong-footed Petr Cech to give the home side the lead just before the interval. Arturo Vidal added to the lead just after the hour mark when his side-footed effort from Kwadwo Asamoah's cut-back was deflected past Cech off the heel of Ramires. And substitute Sebastian Giovinco put the gloss on the display as he slotted the ball past the advancing Chelsea goalkeeper in injury time. Chelsea must now beat Nordsjaelland in their final Group E game - and hope Shakhtar Donetsk beat Juve in Ukraine - to have any chance of retaining their European crown. And Roberto Di Matteo may regret fielding a new-look line-up with Fernando Torres axed in favour of Eden Hazard up front and Cesar Azpilicueta playing on the right of midfield. Juventus had dominated the game before the break with wing-backs Stephan Lichtsteiner and Asamoah pushing forward a ...

Chelsea Set To Replace Failing Striker. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich looks set to finally give up on Fernando Torres and launch a mega bid to bring Radamel Falcao to Stamford Bridge. Real Madrid and Manchester City are also believed to be keen on the striker, however with the Blues’ recent Champions League success, the Colombian seems to be interested in a move to West London. Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in 2011, for a sensational fee of £50 million, however the Spaniard has failed to make an impression at the Bridge. The departure of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba this summer was believed to be an opportunity for the striker to repay his large transfer fee. Torres has scored just four league goals so far this season and it is now believed that Abramovich has decided that he wants a new fresh forward to lead Chelsea to future success. Ambition Falcao, who has a £48 million release clause on his contract at Atletico Madrid, heaped praise upon Chelsea for their vision and was confident he could ...

The Stamford Bridge in London hosts what could eventually prove to be the most gruelling EPL match for the season as Chelsea clash with Man U. It couldn't have come at a better time! Chelsea are still riding on the impetus generated from last year's somewhat fortitous Champions League victory but at the same time, did the right thing of signing Hazard and Oscar, who, together with Juan Mata, form a deadly attacking prowess that can destroy any team on the planet. The three, complimeneted by others such as David Luiz-who is solid in defence and Ashley Cole, are the main reason behind the Blues' good start to the season. If it had not been for the laxity and lucklustre approach of chief striker, Fernando Torres, Chelsea would have scored dozens of goals more than what they have thus far. On the other hand, Man U still grapple with defensive frailties, and that makes it very interesting coming up against the harzadous trio. That could be the major determining factor on Sunday. However, for their part, Manu U ...
Chelsea suffered their first Champions League defeat under Roberto Di Matteo last night against Shakhtar Donetsk, and it certainly made me wish I could turn back to the clock and change a couple of decisions made by Roman Abramovich in the last few seasons. For starters I was over the moon when Di Matteo finally took Fernando Torres off the field after 70 minutes of last nights game.

Arteta - The defence was not to blame Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal’s defence was not solely to blame for Saturday’s defeat against Chelsea. Both of the visitors’ goals came from set pieces, as first Fernando Torres and then Juan Mata consigned Arsène Wenger’s team to their first loss of the season. “It’s a hard one to take but we’ve conceded from three set pieces in the last two games. That’s cost us points and it’s not good enough,” said Arteta. “I don’t think it’s something to do with the defence. It’s about an individual defensive set-up in the game which is a free kick or a corner. Today we haven’t defended well enough and we’ve conceded two goals that have cost us the game. “It’s everyone’s responsibility. You can’t fault one player on that. We have to clean the lines up quickly and you can’t just allow runners like that in the box.” Despite Saturday's defeat, Arteta believes there are a lot of plusses to take from Arsenal's start to the season - and is ad ...
Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo: "It was a big challenge to play against a quality side like Arsenal. We are very pleased, we were excellent today and deserved the win. Fernando Torres was excellent, his contribution was very good. It was right to pick John Terry, he showed his leadership again today. We pressed Arsenal and didn't allow them to find their rhythm. We have one of the best goalkeepers in the world and that is why he is with us. He made two saves. We didn't just come and sit back we took the initiative and took the game forward. We have a few knocks and bruises but we will *** them all before the Champions League game."
Talisman needed: Fernando Torres must step up to the plate in Didier Drogba's absence when Chelsea return to Champions League action
Fernando Torres - Chelsea The Chelsea striker insists he's put a difficult start to his Stamford Bridge career behind him, and he's made a promising start to the Premier League season. Roberto Di Matteo lacks options up front, so Fernando Torres will need to be firing on all cylinders if Chelsea are to successfully defend their Champions League trophy.
London – After storming down the tunnel at Loftus Road on Saturday, Fernando Torres found little to smile about at Chelsea’s training ground on Monday. The £50million striker is retreating into his shell again, making his displeasure known after he was substituted nine minutes from time against QPR. Torres expects to start against Juventus on Wednesday night as Chelsea begin the defence of the Champions League, but his confusing body language is cause for concern. At times he has hankered after a return to Liverpool, the club who converted him from lethal finisher to world-class forward after his move from Atletico Madrid in 2007. Had Damien Comolli, Liverpool’s former director of football strategy, got his way it could easily have happened after he explored the extraordinary possibility of re-signing the striker. In February this year, Comolli was stunned when a prominent member of the Liverpool dressing room knocked on the door to his office and pleaded with him to investigate the proposition. T ...

Roberto Di Matteo’s side will embark on their first Champions League campaign as holders hoping to display a different style to that which won them the competition last season.
