The African boys were of interest as the draw for the Champions League was done. Thankfully for the European clubs, their African stars would have returned from the 2015 Afcon by the time the Round of 16 starts in late February. English champions Manchester City will have Yaya Toure after the tournament finishes on February 8 in Equatorial Guinea. Last year, Barca beat City at the same stage and having played for the Catalans, Yaya will surely have mixed feelings. Chelsea drew PSG, with Nigeria's John Obi Mikel, and Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba expected to feature. Also expected to play a key part will be Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang whose Borussia Dortmund have been drawn against Juventus. Ghana's Kwadwo Asamoah is however out with a knee injury and may likely miss the two-legged affair. Tunisia defender Aymen Abdennour and Cote d'Ivoire striker Lacina Traore have their Monaco side playing Arsenal. FC Basel, who have Ivoirians Giovanni Sio and Serey Die also have to contend wi ...
Thibaut Courtois has urged his Chelsea team-mates to put their first defeat of the season behind them after their 23-game unbeaten run was ended by Newcastle. The Premier League leaders suffered a 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park after Papiss Cisse scored a second-half double for Alan Pardew’s side. Jose Mourinho’s side must now dust themselves down and prepare for Wednesday night’s clash with Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League followed by Hull’s visit on Saturday. Goalkeeper Courtois told Chelsea TV: "That's the most important, that we are still leaders and from the next game on, we will fight to keep that bonus up and make the gap bigger. "There are only difficult games in the Premier League and we know that. The next game is in the Champions League at home and then against Hull, we have to win in front of our fans." Cisse scored four minutes after climbing off the bench and added his second just over 20 minutes later before Didier Drogba pulled one back after Steven Taylor had been dismissed ...
Newcastle United ended Chelsea's 23- match unbeaten run as Papiss Cisse scored two second-half goals in a tense 2-1 win over the Premier League leaders on Saturday. Cisse, who came on as a substitute after the break, tapped in Newcastle's first after 57 minutes and struck again on the break 20 minutes later, seconds after Eden Hazard had been denied an equaliser by the woodwork. Newcastle were reduced to 10 men shortly afterwards when Steven Taylor was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Andre Schuerrle before substitute Didier Drogba gave Chelsea hope of a comeback with a majestic header after 83 minutes. Chelsea applied late pressure in a nerve-jangling six minutes of stoppage time but their hopes of stretching their unbeaten run to a new club record were thwarted by dogged Newcastle resistance and a brilliant fingertip save by substitute keeper Jak Alnwick on his competitive debut. Defeat for Jose Mourinho's side, their first since the second leg of last season's Champions League semi- final again ...
Chelsea job for Drogba Jose Mourinho has revealed that veteran Chelsea striker Didier Drogba will be offered a role with the club when he retires from playing. Drogba, who was voted the most popular player ever by Chelsea fans in 2012, scored in Wednesday’s emphatic 3-0 over Tottenham, Sky Sports reports. The 36-year-old is enjoying a successful second spell at the club since returning from a spell with Turkish side Galatasaray. Mourinho was keen to praise the Ivorian for the impact he has had on the squad since returning and said there will be a role for Drogba at Chelsea after he retires. “It’s remarkable,” said Mourinho. “I was expecting exactly this. The important thing is that he’s here and he’s going to finish his career with Chelsea. “It looks, for me, that he’s going to stay doing other things when he finishes his career. “It will be his decision when he decides when to stop as a player. It will be something personal.” Drogba’s most famous Chelsea moment came when he grabbe ...
Didier Drogba became the first African player to score 50 goals in the Champions League last night
Jose Mourinho claimed his Chelsea team is a thing of “beauty” after they racked up their biggest Champions League away win for 15 years. John Terry, Willian, Didier Drogba, Ramires and an own goal from Schalke midfielder Jan Kirchoff inflicted a crushing defeat later described by boss Roberto Di Matteo as “the most painful of my career”. Mourinho said: “This happiness, this flair, this beauty. The way we are doing things, we are very happy. “To win 5-0 in Germany is even more not normal. The performance was complete. It was very impressive. We have a good team. Obviously we can lose and the bad result is waiting for us. But the reality is the team is playing very well.”
Jose Mourinho was thrilled with the emphatic result against Schalke as well as his team’s performance which was close to perfect from the first minute to the last. The Blues romped to our equal-biggest ever away win in the Champions League tonight, with three first-half goals and two in 60 seconds after the break doing the damage. John Terry, Willian and an own goal had us 3-0 ahead at the interval and more scintillating football after the break was rewarded when substitutes Didier Drogba and then Ramires netted in quick succession. It was no less than a brilliant team performance deserved, as Mourinho acknowledged afterwards… ‘We played a fantastic match,’ the manager enthused. ‘The team is very confident. We needed to come and play and we showed that from the first minute. ‘The team was always in control playing top quality football, strong defensively, no mistakes, no real saves for Courtois, just one rebound which hit the bar. It was very impressive. ‘In the second half we didn’t need ...
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho believes his team's "perfect" performance in the 5-0 Champions League win at Schalke is one of the club's finest away performances. The Blues thrashed ex-boss Roberto Di Matteo's side to qualify for the last 16 with one Group G game remaining. "I don't remember Chelsea playing this way away from home," said Mourinho. "Obviously, there have been great wins away from home with me, Roberto and other managers. But this was very impressive. Very complete." The Premier League leaders, who are now unbeaten in 19 matches across all competitions, continued their fine form with a clinical performance in Germany. Chelsea led 3-0 at half-time after goals from John Terry, Willian and Schalke defender Jan Kirchhoff, before Didier Drogba and Ramires completed the rout in the final 15 minutes. "I think they have to accept we were too strong for them," added Mourinho, whose side inflicted Schalke's first home defeat since April. "When you lose against a team that produces a perfect performance a ...
Schalke 0-5 Chelsea: Mourinho's men cruise into Champions League last 16 The Blues guaranteed a place at the top of their group after a dominating victory over club hero Roberto Di Matteo's side in Gelsenkirchen, playing some excellent football By Tony Kelshaw Nov 25, 2014 21:32:00 Chelsea romped to a 5-0 victory away against Schalke to confirm themselves as winners of their Champions League group with a game to spare. The Blues took the lead in just the second minute when John Terry headed home a corner and their superiority was clear from that point onward. Willian finished a glorious team move to double their advantage just before the half-hour before Schalke's Jan Kirchhoff, having a dreadful game and hauled off at the break moments later, inexplicably headed into his own net under no pressure from a Chelsea corner. Jose Mourinho's side continued to push in the second half and, galvanised by Didier Drogba's arrival as a substitute, scored two in quick succession through the Ivorian and then Ramires to ...

Chelsea facing striker crisis before Manchester United match: Chelsea face the prospect of having veteran Didier Drogba as their only fit striker for their visit to Manchester United on Sunday in what is usually one of the standout matches of the Premier League season. Jose Mourinho's league leaders will definitely be without their nine-goal top scorer Diego Costa, who has a hamstring problem. Frenchman Loic Remy is also a doubt after injuring himself while scoring Chelsea's opening goal in their club record 6-0 Champions League victory over Maribor on Tuesday. Drogba, 36, came off the bench after 16 minutes to replace Remy and scored from the penalty spot for his first goal since returning to the club following a two-year spell away. He is Chelsea's only fully fit regular first team striker, but Mourinho could include 17-year-old Dominic Solanke in the squad for the visit to Old Trafford, after the teenager came on as a late substitute to make his senior debut against Maribor. "We know Solanke's talent i ...

Loic Remy swept in the opener but was quickly replaced by Drogba after injuring himself when scoring. Drogba then converted a penalty before John Terry slid in a third. A Mitja Viler own goal put Chelsea in command before Eden Hazard scored a penalty and drove in a late sixth. Agim Ibraimi hit the post with a penalty for Maribor, but in truth the Slovenians were well beaten. Chelsea have seven points from three games to sit top of Group G, and will be confident of reaching the knockout stage. It was almost the perfect win for boss Jose Mourinho, although the injury to Remy was a cause for concern. With Diego Costa out with a hamstring injury, the Blues could face Sunday's Premier League trip to Manchester United with Drogba as the c ...
MOURINHO: VERY HAPPY Jose Mourinho watched his side record our biggest ever Champions League win against Maribor, and praised the manner of the performance. Goals from Loic Remy and captain John Terry, either side of a Didier Drogba penalty, gave us a three-goal advantage at the break, with an Eden Hazard brace – including one from the spot – and a Mitja Viler own goal compounding the Slovenian’s misery. ‘I told the players before the game that the best way to respect opponents who, in theory, are not as good as you are, and don’t have the same potential as you, is to play at your maximum level,’ explained the Portuguese. ‘It’s not to play a second team, or play with a lack of concentration, it’s to play the best possible way. From the first minute until the last we tried to play well. Defensively we respected our opponents; we know their strikers are good players, the wingers are dangerous, so they deserve our respect. ‘Because we respected them so much we managed to produce a solid p ...

An own-goal continued the scoring with two from Eden Hazard completing the rout; he and Drogba both netting once from the penalty spot. Ronaldo ultimately signed for Manchester United in a deal worth just over £12 million and has gone on to achieve global superstardom at Old Trafford and Real Madrid, as well as being voted the best player in the world in 2008 and 2013. The Portuguese also won three consecutive Premier League titles and a Champions League crown with United between 2006 and 2009 while Arsenal were trophyless over the same period, and Wenger admits he wishes he had acted differently. Didier Drogba has returned to training with Chelsea ahead of a possible first European outing with the club since scoring the winning goal in the 2012 Champions League final. Drogba's first spell with the Blues ended with him scoring the decisive penalty which defeated Bayern Munich in the final at the Allianz Arena. He has now given manager Jose Mourinho a big boost by returning from injury sooner than expected, showing no ill effects as he trained with the Chelsea squad at their Cobham base on Tuesday. Drogba rejoined Chelsea this summer after a spell at Galatasaray but missed Saturday's win over Swansea because of an ankle injury which was expected to keep him out of the Group G match against Schalke on Wednesday. Mourinho is likely to start with in-form Diego Costa up front at Stamford Bridge but Drogba may well gain a place on the bench. Watch Chelsea play Schalke live on Sky Sports 1 from 7.30pm on Wednesday.

MICHAEL OWEN thinks Chelsea will win the Premier League next season with Manchester United making a return to the top four at the expense of Arsenal. Former England, Liverpool, Newcastle and Manchester United striker Michael Owen BOLD: Owen has predicted that Arsenal will miss out on the top four this season The former United and Liverpool striker has, perhaps unsurprisingly, tipped his former clubs to edge out Arsene Wenger's Gunners to qualify for Champions League football in 2015/16. And Owen thinks Chelsea's new firepower will see them beat current champions Manchester City into second place next term. Owen said: "I felt the Achilles heel for Jose Mourinho's side last season was the inability of their strikers to score goals and I feel recent £32m signing Diego Costa is the final piece of the jigsaw for the West London outfit and I fully expect his goals to change a very good side into a title-winning one. "Ironically the Club have never adequately replaced Blues' legend Didier Drogba and whilst the ...
A long-term link to Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old Uruguay international joining Jose Mourinho's side would be dependent on a number of factors, not least Chelsea's need to comply with UEFA regulations. Apart from already having exceeded the quota for foreign players over the age of 21 by one -- with Didier Drogba taking them to 18 -- the London club are also increasingly conscious of financial fair play. It is expected that Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech could move on, however, and that any purchase of Cavani would finally see the long-mooted sale of Fernando Torres. Furthermore, the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Everton brought in 28 million pounds, freeing up more funds. Sources told ESPN FC that Chelsea have been quoted a price of 40 million pounds by PSG for Cavani, and that the player is eager to move to Stamford Bridge -- despite a public declaration that he would prefer to stay in France. There has already been preliminary contact between the London club and the player's camp, although Chelsea are s ...

The 36-year-old Ivory Coast striker signed a 12-month deal last week to return to Stamford Bridge after having left the club immediately after their 2012 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich. “Five years is a long time not to win the Premier League so I want to win it,” Drogba told the club website. “To lift the Premier League trophy is a fantastic feeling and we haven’t experienced it for a few years, too long for a club like ours. “I missed the Premier League, which for me is the best in the world. It’s true the German league is on the way up but the English league has been the best over the last decade and I’m really looking forward to playing the first game.” Drogba won the top-flight crown three times in his first spell at Chelsea, in 2005, 2006 and 2010, an ...

The 36-year-old, who won three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his previous eight-year spell at the club, has backed Brazil-born Costa to make an impact in English football. Jose Mourinho has admitted that he will have to get rid of one of his foreign players as Chelsea desperately try to find a buyer for Fernando Torres. The return of Didier Drogba means Chelsea’s anticipated 1st-team squad has one too many foreign players under Premier League&Champions League rules relating to the home-grown quota. Clubs can only name 17 foreign players over the age of 21 in their official 25-man squads&Chelsea have 18 overseas stars who are realistically vying for those places. 'What I also remember is it was the one of the biggest games so far that season for both of the sets of supporters, and we had Didier Drogba play and he had just come from Marseille so he made the atmosphere at the game even bigger, and he scored.' Didier Drogba and the 20 Veterans Still Playing at the Highest Level 1) Didier Drogba, Galatasaray As mentioned, Drogba is a regular for Galatasaray these days and has scored 10 goals in 23 league appearances this term. He's also scored twice in the Champions League, and Chelsea will be hoping he doesn't add to that at their expense on Tuesday. Drogba has just turned 36 yet still looks as though he could play on for a while yet. 2) Ryan Giggs, Manchester United Ryan Giggs remains a part of the Manchester United first-team scene despite having turned 40. His participation in the coaching side of things naturally means that his long reign at the club as a player might finally be coming to an end, but he's still made almost 20 appearances this term. Giggs is United's record appearance holder and has won everything in the game at club level. 3) Andrea Pirlo, Juventus A minor technicality to get out of the way—Pirlo is still 34 but will turn 35 before the end of the current season. Jose Mourinho gave Didier Drogba the kiss of death - and then claimed Chelsea's win lifted them back among the world's elite. Stamford Bridge legend Drogba and the Special One shared a warm embrace before kick-off, and Chelsea presented Drogba with a mounted silver boot to commemorate the Ivory Coast striker's 157 goals and trophy-laden eight years at the club. But first-half goals from Samuel Eto'o and Gary Cahill condemned Drogba to a miserable night as Mourinho's men kept the blue flag flying over Europe and marched comfortably into the Champions League quarter-finals. Mourinho will today be charged with misconduct by the FA for encroaching on the pitch before he was sent to the stand at Aston Villa on Saturday, which is likely to land him with a £10,000 fine. But a brown envelope on the doormat from Wembley could not diminish the pleasure he took from a commanding Chelsea display. He said: "We are there in the last eight, but it's different from last season because the Europa League was a different l ...

Chelsea captain John Terry believes Didier Drogba still has all the qualities of a world-class striker after the former team-mates came up against each other in the Champions League on Tuesday. This week saw Drogba make his first trip to Stamford Bridge since leaving in 2012 as Galatasaray took on the Blues in the second-leg of their last-16 tie. The 36-year-old was unable to find the back of the net, though, as the Premier League giants eventually emerged 2-0 victors on the night, securing a 3-1 aggregate win. Terry remains convinced the Ivory Coast striker is still just as deadly a force as he was during his highly successful eight-year stay at Chelsea, where he won numerous English titles, as well as the Champions League crown in his final contribution for the club. "It was really strange actually - even in the first leg, he's so strong," Terry told Sky Sports. "When the ball goes up from the keeper, no matter how strong you are, you can't get it off him and I don't think there's anyone better in the w ...

SILVER BOOT PRESENTED TO DIDIER DROGBA.. Didier Drogba got the hero’s welcome he deserved at Stamford Bridge yesterday night, the Chelsea fans chanting the name of their club legend on his return with Galatasaray. And the club made a lovely gesture to the player who won them the Champions League with that sudden death penalty in 2012, presenting him with a beautiful silver boot gift, with blue on the interior. Maybe a mind trick to make him question where his loyalties tonight? You never know with Mourinho…

Chelsea dominant in dispatching Galatasaray Chelsea FC made it an unhappy return to Stamford Bridge for Galatasaray AŞ's Didier Drogba by marching into the Uefa Champions League quarter-finals for the eighth time in 11 seasons. While all the attention had been focused on the reunion with their former forward, it was one of their current ones, Samuel Eto'o, who got the ball rolling Chelsea's way with a strike after four minutes. If that was a well-worked incursion, the second goal owed everything to smart reactions, Gary Cahill following up a John Terry header to score from close range. Drogba – a winner of ten major prizes with Chelsea and who will always be remembered for the decisive penalty against FC Bayern München which ensured they lifted the 2011/12 Uefa Champions League – battled as hard as he could and typically won a number of headers and free-kicks, but support was in short supply simply because the home side were so dominant. The game panned out that way from the fourth minute when Eden ...

Didier Drogba says it will be emotional playing against former club Chelsea when the two teams clash on Tuesday hoping to advance to the last eight in Champions League
Victory in Chelsea's 100th home European match kept the Champions League quest going and Jose Mourinho was very satisfied with what he witnessed from his team.Putting the disappointment against Aston Villa firmly behind them, the Blues never looked in danger of slipping up against the Turkish champions with the goals coming at good moments - early in the first half and shortly before half-time.In his pre-match conference, Mourinho had predicted the outcome of this Round of 16 game would be uncertain until near the end, and although he stuck by that view after the match, he had felt confident throughout it was going his way…'It was a very good performance, very solid, very compact, no fears and a very good approach to the game,' said Mourinho, 'because even if you are winning 2-0 it is difficult because if they score one goal you are on the limit. The team was very solid and confident and very much in control for the 90 minutes which is difficult to do.'The 2-0 kept the game alive to the end but the way ...

Career paths Spotted and snapped up by Real Madrid at the age of 15 in 1996, Eto'o never managed to convince Los Merengues of his potential, and he was loaned out to Leganes in 1997 before being allowed to join Mallorca three years later. The Cameroonian marksman's goalscoring acumen nonetheless caught Barcelona's eye in 2004, and he went on to spend five trophy-laden years in Catalonia, ahead of a similarly prolific and successful ...

'I feel young and full of football. It's like I'm still a kid when I'm chasing the ball'... Drogba hungry for more success, but the man who made him stands in his way Jose Mourinho has long insisted his managerial formula cannot be bottled, but here in Istanbul one of his greatest success stories is giving it a good go. Rarely has there been a more articulate explanation for what it is that makes Mourinho so special, and the fact that it comes from Didier Drogba gives it serious credibility. Here, after all, is a player Mourinho transformed from a forward of obvious potential at Marseille into one of the finest in the world; someone who says he was still drawing on that guidance and expertise long after the Portuguese manager made his sudden and unexpected departure from Stamford Bridge in September 2007. In fact right up to Drogba’s last kick in a Chelsea shirt, the penalty that won the Champions League in Munich two years ago. The infamous old version of the Ali Sami Yen, with its intimidating intimacy and city location, has made way for the slick, expansive acreage of the Turk Telecom Arena. 'Welcome to half-and-half scarf *** ', anyone? Nonetheless the locals will attempt to stoke the furnaces and avoid a repeat of the Blues' 5-0 triumph in Istanbul in 1999. Other aspects of the trip are far more familiar, notably the presence on the pitch of the Londoners' Champions League-winning legend, Didier Drogba . He will be at the centre of attention, and while we will all be awaiting his muted celebration if he scores, there is still the small matter of a Champions League quarter-final place at stake. Overcoming Galatasaray will be no mean feat. Roberto Mancini, the man who managed Manchester City to their Premier League title in 2012, has won six of his 11 meetings against Chelsea. The Turkish Superlig holders provided the biggest surprise of the group stages, subjecting Italian giants Juventus to the knockout phase of the much less valued – and significantly less valuabl ...
“Eto’o is the only striker I have and he is probably 35″ – Mourinho José Mourinho has reacted angrily after reports emerged in France of the Chelsea manager making disparaging remarks, delivered in what he apparently considered to be a private conversation, over the quality of the forwards at his disposal. The comments were made last week in Nyon but reported as he and his squad flew out to Turkey for the first leg of their Champions League knockout tie against Galatasaray. Chelsea will come face to face with their former striker, Didier Drogba, at the Turk Telekomm arena on Wednesday and while that promises to be an emotional reunion, Mourinho has been left to rebuild bridges with Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba after Canal Plus published a video on its website of him assessing the current crop. While Chelsea do not deny the authenticity of the quotes, they have stressed that the manager was unaware he was being filmed and was instead conducting what he believed to be a private and ...
Players who could be key in the UCL this week By Michael Cox | February 24, 2014 1:42:45 PM PST This week's Champions League fixtures aren't anywhere near as appetising as the clashes we enjoyed last week -- hopefully there will be some decent performances from the home sides this time around or else an amazing number of the ties could be decided before the second leg. Here are the key battles to watch for in each of the four matches ... Zenit vs. Dortmund: Hulk vs. Marco Reus The week’s opening tie could be the most fascinating, and should see a battle between two exciting, direct wide forwards. In recent years, Zenit have been consistently promising without actually developing into a top-class European side, while Dortmund reached the European Cup final last year but have declined, with injury problems causing huge problems this season. This time last year Dortmund brushed aside Shakhtar Donetsk, and this is a similar contest for Juergen Klopp's side: an Eastern European powerhouse coming off their wi ...

Mikel Fit For Drogba Reunion -As Chelsea, Galatasaray Clash In UCL Barely 24 hours after reports emerged about doubts over Chelsea of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi for Wednesday night’s Uefa Champions League battle away to Galatasaray of Turkey, the Super Eagles star has sensationally shot back into the spotlight for a possible clash against his former teammate, Didier Drogba. With all headlines across Europe hypoing the potential lock-of-horns between Drogba and his former Stamford Bridge colleagues, the initial talk had been that Mikel would miss the game with fitness issues, which ruled him out of last weekend’s ditch 1-0 win against Everton, but Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho says the Nigeria star is good to go. Tuesday’s game will, therefore, be a chance for Mikel to prove his mettle in The Blues’ mainframe, as his main rival for a shirt in the squad, Nemanja Matic is cup tied and ruled out of the game against one of the teams that so desperately desired a transfer deal for the Eagles’ la ...

"We players believe that it is possible, but at the same time it is not our mission. Right now we are not thinking about other teams or the end of the season, we are just focused on our next ...

MATES John Terry believes Chelsea relish the packed end-of-season schedule and has called for the Blues to use Saturday's 1-0 defeat of Everton as a catalyst for a strong run. Terry's last-gasp goal ensured a winning feeling for Chelsea as they travel to Istanbul on Wednesday to play Didier Drogba's Galatasaray in their Champions League last-16 first-leg tie, before a London derby with Fulham in the Barclays Premier League next weekend. Jose Mourinho has continually downplayed Chelsea's title chances, but the Blues lead the standings ahead of their trip to Turkey and Terry is eager for further improvement. IS TERRY ON POINT???
Galatasaray's Didier Drogba trains Champions League sights on Chelsea Former Stamford Bridge striker and favourite has saved his best form for a tournament he won with them in 2012 Shanghai is a long way from the Uefa Champions League both geographically and competitively, which is why Didier Drogba finds himself in Turkey and how it has come about that he lines up for Galatasaray against Chelsea in Istanbul this week. Time is no longer on the striker's side. He will have turned 36 by the time the return leg at Stamford Bridge takes place next month and, though a move back to Chelsea in a playing capacity was briefly mooted last year, new reports linking him with various MLS clubs appear to make more sense. José Mourinho, satisfied that Chelsea saw the best of the Ivorian first time round, is already preparing a royal welcome. "The Turkish champions with King Didier is the draw we would have asked for," the Chelsea manager said. "When he comes back to this club he deserves a reception better than mine." ...

Drogba explains what was going through his mind when he stepped up to take the penalty that would give his side an unassailable 4-3 lead in the penalty shoot-out. “I was thinking, okay, okay now it is my turn, what do I do, the goalkeeper has gone everywhere we shoot everywhere, every time you take a long run he goes in the right direction, so I decided to do a Panenka, so I thought okay - Panenka. No, no, no, no, Panenka." He adds: "But I decided to take a two-step then I will not give the goalkeeper any time to read my run and I will see wh ...

Football players at the very top of the game earn an extraordinary amount of money each year. Here are the Top Ten highest paid players, courtesy of business magazine Forbes. The following list is based purely on salary earnings, and does not include endorsements - or else David Beckham would place number one despite retiring in May. 10. Kaka (Real Madrid - AC Milan) £8.57 million Kaka may have had a disappointing and injury interrupted Real Madrid career, but earned a colossal salary nonetheless having signed for the Spanish capital club as a world record transfer. The Brazilian has since moved to AC Milan, where he has taken a salary cut of over 50% from his previous wages at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. It is therefore unlikely that Kaka will be in this list in 2014. 9. Words from Jose Mourinho after Drogba won the golden foot award 2013 ”I’m a person who likes to treasure memories, and with them I can tell the world many things. I’m not a writer, even less a poet, but my life has been rich with stories, stories full of extraordinary moments. Looking back at them, I can find only a few special people who I will keep in my soul and in my heart forever. Didier Drogba came into my life in the fifth minute of a Champions League game in Marseille’s mythical Vélodrome. I’d hardly sat down when that giant with the number 11 on his shirt scored. I remember he celebrated that goal like it was his last and he turned an already hostile atmosphere into a fireball of flares, chants and emotion. The crowd went mad, the noise was deafening. At half-time I found him in the tunnel and told him: ‘I don’t have the money to buy you, but do you have any cousins that can play like you in the Ivory Coast?’ In the middle of this tense qualification game he laughed, hugged me an ...
Cristiano Ronaldo helps Real Madrid beat Juventus Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid beat Juventus 2-1 to maintain their 100% Champions League record. Ronaldo opened the scoring with a dinked finish but Fernando Llorente equalised from close range before Ronaldo scored a penalty, his seventh goal in three Champions League games. Juve had Giorgio Chiellini sent off before Real's Gareth Bale came on for the last 23 minutes. Galatasaray went second in Group B, above Juve, by beating FC Copenhagen. Felipe Melo, Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba scored the goals for Roberto Mancini's side in their 3-1 win, with Claudemir scoring a late consolation. I will be posting our players histories, it can be minutes after minutes or days after days. Keep checking this page. I will start with Brana, the Serbian tank. Chelsea career Branislav's start to life as a Chelsea player was slow. Signed in January 2008, it took him eight months to gain the necessary match fitness to play in the Carling Cup away at Portsmouth, before a lengthier spell in the heart of defence alongside John Terry after injury to Ricardo Carvalho and Alex. Settled in London and his English steadily improving, Branislav began to show his true capabilities, while also earning cult status among Chelsea fans for his Champions League double at Anfield in April 2009. Deployed at centre-half, Ivanovic went up for two corners and was almost ignored as the threat of Terry and Didier Drogba was deemed more dangerous by Liverpool, allowing him to ghost in and crash home two headers, all but booking our place in that season's semi-finals. He kept his place for a run of games afterwards, marking Thierr ...
Why do FC Barcelona cheat sooo much...? VIA:Top Football News & LIVE Updates Chelsea v Barcelona (2005 Champions League) - Didier Drogba sent off in the 55th minute after he went for a 50-50 ball and clashed with Victor Valdes. Jose then commented on how he had seen Frisk enter Frank Rijkaard’s room at HT. Expectedly he was banned while Rijkaard received a medal for his dignified conduct over the affair. Thomas Müller and the future of the modern striker Thomas Müller is not a striker in the conventional sense. He does not position himself between the centre-backs and act as an offensive pivot. He does not perpetually loiter on the shoulder of the last defender, ready to burst through on goal. He does not even start in the fourth band. Nonetheless, I would argue that Müller is the definition of the modern striker. Few players in the history of the game have taken to top-level football as effortlessly or exerted such a dominant influence. As recently as 2009, Müller was playing in the third tier of German football with Bayern Munich II. Since then he has won two Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokals, the 2010 World Cup Golden Boot, the same tournament’s Best Young Player award and, finally, a Champions League. He has also been a runner-up in two Champions League tournaments, scoring what seemed a certain winner in the 2012 final before Didier Drogba wrote Chelsea’s name on the European Cup. As The Stra ...

Drogba is to be paid 13.5 million for the 18-month period, the club announced, plus a bonus of 20,000 US dollars for each match played. Drogba left Chelsea for China last year after helping the West London side to their first Champions League title. Galatasaray, who are currently five points clear of Fenerbahce at the top of the Turkish league, have already made a major statement in the Transfer Window by landing Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan earlier this month. Drogba is currently on international duty at the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast.
Lowlight | The Ferdinand-Terry saga rocked English football & unveiled its hypocrisy Andriy Shevchenko's double for Ukraine against Sweden illuminated Euro 2012 early and a goal of rare beauty from Jordi Alba in the final bore all the hallmarks of a Spain team for the ages. Relentless dominance from la Roja and their player of the tournament Andres Iniesta. The only thing that will beat them is time. More Spanish glory came in the Europa League with Atletico Madrid overcoming a sapped Athletic Bilbao side who thrilled at Old Trafford earlier in the competition. Radamel Falcao was the star for them and continues to be so. Didier Drogba has presented his former team-mates from Chelsea’s Champions League winning side with commemorative rings. The Ivorian icon presented John Terry, David Luiz, Ryan Bertrand, Branislav Ivanovic, Paulo Ferreira, Daniel Sturridge and Ashley Cole with rings similar to those worn by Super Bowl winners, at an event at a London hotel last night. Every member of the victorious Blues squad had been invited, but not all managed to attend for various reasons. The mood at the hotel must have been bitter sweet, considering the fact that Chelsea had just become the first Champions League holders in history to be eliminated from the competition after the group stage. And the Blues have seemed a far less potent force without imposing African legend Drogba to name in their ranks. It is no surprise that the club had hoped to bring the Shanghai Shenhua striker back to Stamford Bridge on loan just for a few months, only for Fifa to pull the plug on their plans. The rings are said to have set Drogba back to the ...
Spurs and Liverpool have stepped up their hunt for Bafetimbi Gomis after the player's representatives flew to London for a meeting last week. The player's agents were reportedly speaking to both clubs prior to their clash at White Hart Lane. Gomis, who is currently second in the goalscoring charts behind PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic with ten goals to his credit has just one year left on his current contract with Lyon. The forward is surplus as Lyon want to cash in on a transfer fee in lieu of Champions League money this season. They currently top Ligue 1 by five points - although it seems their major asset may be off to seek a new challenge in the Premier League. His representatives saw both Spurs and Liverpool with Andre Villas-Boas and Brendan Rodgers both in the marketplace for a strong targetman. Gomis is similar in style to Didier Drogba but the 27-year-old will command a hefty fee. However, with both Spurs and the Reds short in attack, the only question appears to be whether Lyon, on course to qualify f ...

Chelsea Set To Replace Failing Striker. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich looks set to finally give up on Fernando Torres and launch a mega bid to bring Radamel Falcao to Stamford Bridge. Real Madrid and Manchester City are also believed to be keen on the striker, however with the Blues’ recent Champions League success, the Colombian seems to be interested in a move to West London. Torres joined Chelsea from Liverpool in 2011, for a sensational fee of £50 million, however the Spaniard has failed to make an impression at the Bridge. The departure of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba this summer was believed to be an opportunity for the striker to repay his large transfer fee. Torres has scored just four league goals so far this season and it is now believed that Abramovich has decided that he wants a new fresh forward to lead Chelsea to future success. Ambition Falcao, who has a £48 million release clause on his contract at Atletico Madrid, heaped praise upon Chelsea for their vision and was confident he could ...

when will England controversy go off englan football? read on, a little down memory lane: Sunday’s fixture between Chelsea and Manchester United was hardly ever likely to be a low key affair, but few could have predicted the carnage that unfolded on a fresh Sunday afternoon at Stamford Bridge. When Manchester United taking a two goal lead against an unbeaten Chelsea barely makes the news, and not a soul mentions that Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand actually shook hands, then you know something big has to have happened. Sending offs, diving, injured stewards, abusive referees, offside goals and a first win in West London for United in ten years; the battle of the bridge will live long in the memory. But what other games have caused so much debate and controversy, and divided opinion that they will be talked about long after the season ends? Liverpool are prepared to bolster their striking options through the loan signing of Didier Drogba, according to the Daily Mirror . Manager Brendan Rodgers has just Luis Suarez as his only recognised front-man following injury to Fabio Borini. The Ivory Coast international could be allowed to join a European club following the culmination of the Chinese Super League next week, of whom his club Shanghai Shenhua picked up the title recently. Drogba left Chelsea last summer following their Champions League victory in May, but would be a welcome addition to Liverpool, if only on a short- term deal.

The young Brazilian arrived at Stamford Bridge for a large fee from Brazilian side Internacional. Dubbed the next Kaka – Oscar has been signed by Chelsea to add a creative dimension to a Chelsea side who have been lacking in creativity of recent years. Making his Champions League debut against Italian Champions Juventus – Oscar scored a brace with two well taken goals. Juventus, with Gianluigi Buffon in goal were not expecting such a strike from Oscar as Chelsea quicklytook a 2-0 lead in the game. Oscar took a touch round two Juventus players before firing a shot into the top right corner past Buffon. It was his second strike of the night justminutes after his first goal.
