Mikel, Moses gets Turkey chance The Super Eagles duo of John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses are in the Chelsea squad already in Turkey for a busy weekend of pre-season matches. The two players have yet another opportunity to prove their mettle in front of Coach Jose who led his 25-man squad to Istanbul Thursday evening to put finishing touches to their pre-season campaign. Moses and Mikel will hope to get playing times in the duel against Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Ferencvaros to come over the next three days. The busy schedule for the Blues starts Friday evening as they will play two 45-minute matches against the two Turkish sides as part of a tournament which is raising money for the families affected by the Soma mining disaster which took place in May. On Saturday, the Blues will then travel to Budapest, where we face Hungarian side Ferencvaros on Sunday. Diego Costa, Fernando Torres, Cesc Febregas and Cesar Azpilicueta will join Chelsea Fc pre-season trainings after comming weekend.
Filipe Luis has signed for Chelsea in a deal worth £20million, according to reports. After months of negotiations with Atletico Madrid, it seems Jose Mourinho has finally caved in and paid full asking price for the man who he sees as a direct replacement for Ashley Cole. According to The Sun, Luis, 28, has agreed terms at Stamford Bridge and will compete with Cesar Azpilicueta for the left-back spot next season. The Brazilian full-back was instrumental in Atletico’s march to La Liga glory last season, and shone in their astonishing run to the Champions League final, which they lost in extra-time to Real Madrid. Luis will become Chelsea’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Croatian youngster Mario Pasalic.

Cesar Azpilicueta welcomes competition from Filipe Luis Chelsea full back Cesar Azpilicueta insists he is ready to fight Filipe Luis for a starting role in Chelsea’s first team should the left back complete his switch from Atletico Madrid as expected. Luis is set to move to Stamford Bridge this summer as part of a £50m deal with Atletico Madrid, which will also see striker Diego Costa arrive in west London. The 28-year-old starred for the La Liga champions at left back this season and was part of the side that knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League semi-finals. Azpilicueta enjoyed an impressive campaign in the same position having established himself as first choice ahead of Ashley Cole, who has now left the club. The Spain international is ready for a similar challenge from Luis and said: “When you play in a top team there’s always a lot of competition for spots. I always fought for my spot with respect to all my teammates and will continue doing.
West Ham United are interested in signing out- of-contract Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, according to Caughtoffside. Cole, 33, is set to be released by the Stamford Bridge side when his contract expires at the end of the month and the Hammers are understood to be among those keen to snap up the experienced defender on a free transfer. The former Arsenal left-back found himself behind right-back Cesar Azpilicueta for much of last season and subsequently lost his place in Roy Hodgson's England squad ahead of the World Cup. Capped 107 times by England, Cole announced his international retirement after being left out of the squad for this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Chelsea's left back cesar azpilicueta would welcome cesc to Stamford Bridge .
Cesar Azpilicueta believes that Cesc Fabregas would fit into the Chelsea team should he leave Barcelona this summer.
A transfer of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona to English club Chelsea will be "a pity" for his current club, his Barcelona and Spain teammate Pedro Rodriguez said on Thursday. "I've not talked with Cesc as yet. He's a very good player for us. If he leaves it would be a shame for Barca," Pedro said as Spain prepared for a World Cup warm-up friendly in the US capital against El Salvador on Saturday. Barcelona defender Gerard Pique had let the cat out of the bag over a supposed 33 million-euro ($45 million) move by Fabregas while chatting with Spain manager Vicente del Bosque at a press conference in Washington. His remark was picked up by a Spanish public television microphone. No club was mentioned, but Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed his side's interest. It's an unwelcome distraction as Spain prepare for their World Cup title defence, but Pedro said he didn't think any tension would linger between Fabregas and Pique. "They are calm about it," he said. "It was an awkward situation, I don't know if ...

Free agents 1. Samuel Eto'o The Cameroon striker has left Chelsea after a solitary season in which he clashed with boss Jose Mourinho over the manager's comments regarding the veteran’s age. Having made it clear he’s 33, Eto’o will also point to his moderate return of nine Premier League goals in 21 appearances. While no longer a main striker, he certainly remains a threat. Arsenal have been linked with a surprising move, and you can already picture Eto'o having a point to prove if he faces the Blues next season 2. Rio Ferdinand Things are changing rapidly at Manchester United these days. Nemanja Vidic has already been allowed to leave and so has long serving defensive partner Rio Ferdinand. The 35-year-old has not been offered a new contract after 12 years at Old Trafford and both Tottenham and QPR are reportedly lurking, ready to tempt the former England captain into staying in the Premier League 3. Chelsea set to complete triple raid on Atletico Madrid including £32m Diego Costa [The Mirror]. The Blues want to snap up three stars from the Vicente Calderon Stadium. The £32m deal to bring Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa to Chelsea appears to be as good as done with the Spaniard completing a medical at the club. Yet that is not the end of the Blues' raid on the Spanish champions, with manager Jose Mourinho also having his eye on left-back Felipe Luis and former player Tiago, according to the Mirror. Here is an analysis of each player and how they would fit into the West Londoners' side. Diego Costa Mourinho has had his eye on this 25-year-old for some time, which after scoring 37 goals for Atleti in all competitions last term is perhaps little surprise. The side's strike force is by far their weakest area and the futures of current crop Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o and Fernando Torres all remain in doubt. Therefore recruitment was needed and Costa's physicality should fit into the Premier League very w ...

Hull boss Steve Bruce is closing in on a surprise double swoop for Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand and Marseille’s Morgan Amalfitano, according to the Daily Star. The Tigers look to have won the race for Bertrand, who was also being courted by Tottenham and Southampton, while Amalfitano’s impressive loan spell with West Brom last season has convinced Bruce to return for him this summer, having missed out on him this time last year. And a £9.75million double capture is close to being completed as Bruce hopes to build a squad capable of competing in both the Premier League and Europa League next term. A source close to the KC Stadium said: “Even though Ashley Cole has been released by Chelsea, Ryan feels his opportunities at the Bridge will still be restricted because of the form of Cesar Azpilicueta. “And he reckons his best chance of getting regular first-team football will be with Hull. “Amalfitano really enjoyed his time at The Hawthorns and desperately wants to come back to England and play in the ...
Navas and Negredo AXED from Spain squad but Chelsea, Arsenal and United... Daily and Sunday Express SPAIN manager Vincente Del Bosque has ruthlessly cut Manchester City duo Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo from his 23-man World Cup squad. The decision highlights the embarrassment of riches that Spain possesses although question marks will be raised over the inclusion of Chelsea striker Fernando Torres. Torres scored just 11 goals in all competitions for Chelsea during the 2013/14 season while Negredo struck 23 times. Torres' Chelsea team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta is in the squad and other English based players will represent Spain in Brazil including Arsenal's Santi Cazorla, Manchester United's Juan Mata and Navas and Negredo's Manchester City partner David Silva. Del Bosque has decided to gamble on the fitness of Atletico Madrid's star striker Diego Costa - despite the Brazilian-born striker limping out of the Champions League final early on. Sevilla's Alberto Moreno, Real Madrid defender Daniel Carvajal, Juv ...
Costa and Torres make final Spain squad Diego Costa and Fernando Torres have both been included in Spain's final squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, but Manchester City pair Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas were left out. The Spanish Football Federation announced on Saturday that both strikers had made the cut and were in Vicente Del Bosque's 23-man party for Brazil. Costa was an injury doubt with a hamstring tear after lasting less than 10 minutes for Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final last Saturday, and still faces a race against time to be fit for Spain's first game, against the Netherlands, on 13 June. Torres has experienced a tough season for Chelsea, but scored from the penalty spot during La Roja’s 2-0 friendly win over Bolivia on Friday night. It meant no place for Negredo, while Navas was also left disappointed, along with the likes of Fernando Llorente, Ander Iturraspe, Alberto Moreno and Daniel Carvajal. Torres' club-mate, Cesar Azpilicueta, Santi Cazorla of Arsenal, Juan Mata ...
Fernando Torres makes Spain's final Squad for the World Cup yet again! Now there's something about this guy and the national team; especially when stars like Fernando Llorente, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo couldn't make the cut. He may have lost some of his goal-scoring touch, but you can't take away the fact that this guy has achieved what some great players constantly yearn for: he has won the Champions League, Europa League, TWO EURO CUPS, and THE World Cup. Fernando Torres, Cesar Azpilicueta (and Diego Costa) all in Spain's World Cup squad.
Confirmed Spain 23man Squad for Brazil. Surprise, surprise... Nando makes the cut. Vincent Del Bosque has whittled his initial 30 man Spain World Cup squad down to the final 23, cutting seven players from his initial squad. Injury robbed the Spain boss of Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, but an embarrassment of riches across the park means that the squad contains some notable omissions. Manchester City pair Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo both miss out, with the latter being omitted in favour of Chelsea forward Fernando Torres. At the back, Del Bosque has kept all four of his initial centre backs, but has cut two of his full backs. Liverpool target Alberto Moreno and Real Madrid full back Daniel Carvajal have both been dropped from the initial squad, with Cesar Azpilicueta staying in as cover for both full back positions. In midfield, Navas and Thiago are joined on the plane home by Bilbao’s Ander Iturraspe, while Premier League trio David Silva, Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla have all made the cu ...

How Mourinho will aim to shake up the squad this summer. There was much excitement around Chelsea last summer when it was announced the highly revered Jose Mourinho would be returning as manager. Yet 12 months on and no silverware, a third place finish in the Premier League and a semi- final exit from the Champions League and things aren't quite as joyful at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho wants to shake up the squad in the close season with Roman Abramovich's money and here's five players we expect to come in and five to leave. Players out Ashley Cole The left-back has already confirmed that after eight years of success in west London he will be leaving the club when his current contract expires. David Luiz, Frank Lampard and Fernando Torres help Chelsea lead the way when it comes to World Cup squad selections By Joe Strange are set to send more players to the World Cup than any other club, with up to 18 stars from Jose Mourinho's side ready to descend on Brazil. Four of Chelsea's squad have been selected to represent the host nation by manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, with Oscar, Willian, Ramires and David Luiz all in line to play on home soil. Chelsea fought back from a goal down to defeat already-relegated Cardiff at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday. The Blues, with nothing to play for, fell behind to the already-relegated hosts, with Craig Bellamy's shot deflected in by Cesar Azpilicueta, but second-half strikes from Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres gave Jose Mourinho's side a season-ending victory and sent their fans back to London happy. This was never going to be like last time. Manchester City players did it the hard way two years ago and they were not going to put their supporters through another emotional rollercoaster. As Oasis classics blasted out of the loud speakers and thousands of City fans invaded the pitch to mob their heroes on the pitch at full-time with flares, flags and all manner of inflatable objects, it felt every bit as special as the title win in 2012. It has been a long, gruelling season but as ever, the table never lies. Interim Manchester United manager Ryan Giggs expects a permanent appointment to be finalised " ...
Can Kurt Zouma really be Chelsea’s next John Terry? Squawka News May 7 2014171 Kurt Zouma Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge bow-out concluded amid the kind of frustrated blubbering only a 0-0 draw at home to Norwich can instigate, though it was plain as day to all a saddening subtext dwelt beneath the tears of Ashley Cole and John Terry. Speculation as to whether Cole had played his last game at the Bridge seems utterly plausible. The English stalwart has been included in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up on only 14 occasions this season and has largely been nudged out of the left-back role by the naturally right-sided Spaniard, Cesar Azpilicueta. However, the Chelsea skipper’s consistency over the imminently ended season have massively doctored the script. Terry, 34 this year, has played the full 90 in each and every one of the 34 occasions Mourinho has fielded him and it is a testament to how well he has performed that the PFA’s decision to include Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany ahead of Terry in ...
From the Chelsea stable: Reflecting on our 3-1 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, David Luiz felt the goal we conceded on the stroke of half-time was the turning point. With the tie goalless following last week's first leg in Spain, an away goal for Diego Simeone's side was always going to make it a difficult evening for the Blues. Fernando Torres had given us the lead against his former club when he swept home a Cesar Azpilicueta cross after 35 minutes, but the visitors restored parity nine minutes later through Adrian Lopez. 'They scored when they needed to score,' said David Luiz. 'We controlled the game for the first 40 minutes and then we conceded a goal at the end of the first half. They were able to counter attack and they dictated the game.' The balance of the contest swung in Atletico's favour early in the second half when Diego Costa scored a penalty, sandwiched in between two headers, from David Luiz and John Terry, which had gone close. Their third goal, scored by Arda Turan following ...
Jose Mourinho is Punished for Playing the Waiting game Against Atletico Madrid With Chelsea's attacking squad Jose Mourinho should be taking the game to the opposition not waiting to counter attack. I understand when managers do that playing away, but it doesn't work at home. It sends out the wrong message to start with Cesar Azpilicueta and have Oscar on the bench. Jose could have been much more positive from the start. He always tries to set his side up to nullify the opposition then punish them but he should be stamping his mark from kick off. When he takes stock this summer he may reflect that he needs another player similar to Didier Drogba. Then he may consider a new approach next time. Koke's a Real Class Act Atletico set up in a 4-4-1-1 formation with Adrian Lopez playing off Diego Costa up top, but Koke was allowed the freedom to roam and was difficult to deal with, showing why Xavi described him as his successor in the Spain side. LONDON, May 01, 2014 (AFP) - Chelsea assistant manager Rui Faria was hit with a six-match stadium ban and fined £30,000 ($50,640, 36,564 euros) on Thursday following his furious rant at the officials during Sunderland's shock win at Stamford Bridge. The Football Association found Faria guilty of two charges of improper conduct after Jose Mourinho's long-time assistant had to be restrained during a fiery touchline exchange with referee Mike Dean and fourth official Phil Dowd in the closing stages of Chelsea's surprise 2-1 home defeat against Sunderland last month. The incident was sparked by Dean's decision to award a controversial penalty to Sunderland when Blues defender Cesar Azpilicueta slid in to challenge Jozy Altidore, causing the Black Cats striker to tumble even though there was little intentional contact. Fabio Borini converted the spot-kick to seal a Sunderland victory which dealt a major blow to Chelsea's hopes of winning the Premier League and ended Mourinho's 77-game unbeaten run in league m ...

Chelsea skipper Terry struggling to make Atletico Madrid clash Chelsea captain John Terry is struggling to make their Champions League semifinal second-leg against Atletico Madrid. The Daily Star says he is rated 50-50 to make a shock return from an ankle injury and face Atletico tomorrow. It is understood Mourinho is planning to play Branislav Ivanovic at centre back alongside Gary Cahill - with Cesar Azpilicueta and Ashley Cole the full backs - if Terry cannot make it.

Chelsea want to extend Cesar Azpilicueta's contract, and are willing to offer him improved terms of £70,000-per-week to convince him to sign, reports the Daily Mail. The Spaniard has nailed down the left-back spot for the Blues this season, leaving stalwart Englishman Ashley Cole having to content himself with a place on the bench. While Cole is likely leaving when his contract expires this summer, Jose Mourinho is desperate to reward 24-year-old Azpilicueta for his superb form. Even if Azpilicueta does sign a new deal, the Blues will likely enter the transfer market to sign a new left-back anyway, with Luke Shaw and Alberto Moreno touted as potential options. SUMMARY OF MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 SUNDERLAND 2 Fabio Borini's 81st-minute penalty consigned us to our maiden league defeat at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho. It was the Portuguese's 78th Premier League game in charge of Chelsea at our home ground. Not only does the loss signal the end of that astonishing run, it also gives Liverpool a huge advantage in the race for the title. We started brightly and took the lead through a Samuel Eto'o volley but our visitors hit back soon after through Connor Wickham after Mark Schwarzer, standing in for the ill Petr Cech, couldn't hold Marcos Alonso's volley. Branislav Ivanovic hit the bar before the interval and Eto'o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres went close after it but it was Sunderland who returned home with the points after Cesar Azpilicueta felled substitute Jozy Altidore and Borini, on loan from Liverpool, converted with ease. Unlike so often before when we have faced an uphill task at this stadium there was no late reprieve and it was left to Mourinho to c ...

The unavailability of Eden Hazard for the tomorrow's game is not worrying me. I expect Jose to go with a total defensive strategy. We can either have Willian Oscar or Schurrle in the attacking three or we can sit back even more and play with Willian Oscar and Ramires in the attacking three and Mikel/Lampard and Luiz in the defensive mid. Ivanovic wont be there either. Cesar Azpilicueta might be given a shot at his original position(RB) with Ashley Cole returning to the line up or David Luiz could play as a right back. A very crucial game for Chelsea if they want to win a trophy this season!
CHELSEA loses 1-2 to SUNDERLAND @ Stamford. LONDON (AP) Chelsea suffered a major setback to its Premier League title aspirations with a 2-1 loss against last-placed Sunderland on Saturday, ending Jose Mourinho's 77-match unbeaten home run during two spells in charge at Stamford Bridge. Black Cats goalkeeper Vito Mannone made 14 saves as Chelsea missed possibly its last opportunity to dislodge Liverpool from the top spot, and the Reds will have the chance to extend their lead to a commanding five points at Norwich on Sunday. After holding Manchester City to a draw midweek, Gus Poyet's players were again the party-poopers. Chelsea could not hold onto its lead after Samuel Eto'o opened the scoring in the 12th minute, as Connor Wickham leveled from the rebound six minutes later following Marcos Alonso's long-range effort. Mourinho's unbeaten run came to an end in the 82nd minute when Fabio Borini scored from the spot after Cesar Azpilicueta brought down Jozy Altidore in the box. After taking four points from ...
The first reaction is always to look for someone, something to blame. But when there are so many to choose from, how can you even pick one? Is there even a point? There were the slips. Should we blame Mark Schwarzer, pressed into action at the last minute, for letting the shot slip? Should we blame John Terry, strong and steady all year, for letting Connor Wickham slip in for the rebound? Should we blame Cesar Azpilicueta, our most consistently excellent player, for slipping first by accident then on purpose? "The first point is to congratulate my players, they did everything they could. They fought, they played from the first to the last second and they deserve that [praise]. Sometimes we praise them when we win but I think it's fair to praise my players after a defeat." -Jose Mourinho; source: Chelsea FC There were the yips. AZPILICUETA: PAST LAST EIGHT There is a range of Champions League experience throughout the Chelsea squad aiming to overcome Paris Saint-Germain tonight. There are those who have made it to the pinnacle and lifted the famous 'cup with the big ears', and there are those, as Jose Mourinho has emphasised, who are new this season to the knockout stages of this tournament. There is also Cesar Azpilicueta who is not fresh to the Champions League quarter-finals but is determined to make it on to the next step for the first time. In the Spaniard's two seasons in France at PSG's big rivals Marseille, the club progressed to the second stage although having played in the group games in the first campaign, a knee injury meant Azpilicueta was absent when they were knocked out by Manchester United in the Round of 16. In 2011/12 however he was there for an impressive run through a tough group and then beyond Inter Milan in the last 16 before meeting Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. 'We did well in the two years I wa ...

Here's Jose Mourinho and Cesar Azpilicueta talking to the media at the conference which has just finished.
Jose Mourinho and Cesar Azpilicueta will talk to the media in Paris very shortly.
Several games left but, my Premier League team of the year as it stands would be: David Marshall (Cardiff would be dead and buried already without him) Seamus Coleman (There'll be some big money offers for him in the summer) Cesar Azpilicueta (Keeping Cole out the team shows how good he is) Gary Cahill (England's best centre back by a long way) Vincent Kompany (The best centre back in the league and maybe in the world) Steven Gerrard (Still the best passer in the league) Yaya Toure (Should win player of the year) Adam Lallana (The star man in a very good Southampton team) Eden Hazard (Has the ability to become one of the best in the world) Daniel Sturridge (Finally fulfilling his potential and must start at the World Cup) Luis Suarez (His combination of skill and work rate is unplayable at times)

Jose Mourinho has said he no longer believes it is possible for Chelsea to win the title following Saturday’s shock 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. Mourinho has seen his side succumb to disappointing defeats to Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in recent weeks. ENDBrewin: Deserved defeat for Blues A John Terry own goal on 52 minutes handed the three points to the Blues' relegation-threatened hosts and Mourinho, who has repeatedly played down his side’s title hopes in recent months, said after the match that -- with Manchester City and Liverpool in pursuit -- the result looked to have ended their chances. “We depend too much on other results,” he said. “When you depend a little, it's possible. When you depend a lot, I don't think it's possible. We depend now too much. I don't think now we can win the league.” Later, Mourinho absolved his defenders -- Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta -- of blame for the loss, but was not shy at pointing fingers at others, saying: "My four ...
Jose Mourinho played the role of concerned parent at Selhurst Park, warning a young ball-boy against time-wasting in case his players reacted badly. The Chelsea boss strode over to the youngster during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace this afternoon, after he appeared to have enraged Cesar Azpilicueta as he took his time over returning the ball. But Mourinho, who whispered into the ball-boy’s ear, said he was thinking back to last season’s incident involving Eden Hazard at Swansea, when the Belgian attempted to kick the ball out from underneath a 17-year-old youngster, resulting in a red card. ‘It doesn’t interfere with the result of the game, but I don’t like the ball-boys provoking the players,’ the Blues boss said. ‘Because at the end of the day what happens is what happened last year at Swansea when a player loses a bit his temper and after that the player is guilty of something that the player is not guilty.

Chelsea line-up v Aston Villa: new names up front for the Blues? Aston Villa v Chelsea is live on talkSPORT this Saturday 13 March 2014. With the unpredictable nature of both Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool and Sunday as well as the North London derby on the same day, three points for Chelsea could be hugely significant in the Premier League title race, so getting the better of Aston Villa on Saturday evening is a must for Jose Mourinho’s men. talkSPORT takes a look at how the Blues could approach the game… Reliable names at the back Jose Mourinho’s regular back four of Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta has been incredibly reliable this season, so he is unlikely to change that against Aston Villa. Christian Benteke’s rather unfortunate open-goal miss while on international duty for Belgium could be playing on the big striker’s mind, so Terry and Cahilll will be confident they can deal with the Villa forward. Willian and Oscar to start? Both Oscar and Wi ...
The special three: How Jose Mourinho, Eden Hazard and John Terry can lead Chelsea to the title Jose Mourinho and Eden Hazard could yet inspire Chelsea to their forth Premier League title Chelsea’s 4-0 victory against Tottenham left the Blues seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table. However, with Manchester City having three games in hand, and Liverpool and Arsenal both also breathing down on Chelsea’s neck with a game to spare, it’s important the Blues keep picking up points. Chelsea have really found their feet recently and the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill, Nemanja Matic have all been fantastic. But three people in particular deserve the plaudits. Jose Mourinho Without taking any credit away from the effort and performances of the team as a whole, Chelsea certainly have Mourinho to thank for being at the top. The quality was there last season. The likes of Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Frank Lampard were inspirational but yet Chelsea found themselves way off the pace compa ...
CHELSEA vs TOTTENHAM: All the latest team news and stats ahead of London derby concerning title fight and race for top four Stamford Bridge (Saturday, 5.30pm - Sky Sports 1) Chelsea team news: Ashley Cole is out of Chelsea's Premier League clash with Tottenham on Saturday with a minor knee injury. The 33-year-old left-back, who has been second choice at Chelsea to Cesar Azpilicueta in recent weeks, suffered a lateral ligament injury in training on Thursday which will keep him out for eight to 10 days. Chelsea have a number of undisclosed concerns following the midweek internationals, with defender David Luiz thought to be among them after exacerbating a groin injury while on Brazil duty, but Eden Hazard is fit to feature despite fears of an ankle knock suffered playing for Belgium. Provisional squad: Cech, Ivanovic, Luiz, Ramires, Lampard, Torres, Oscar, Mikel, Schurrle, Salah, Hazard, Ba, Willian, Matic, Schwarzer, Cahill, Terry, Azpilicueta, Eto'o, Blackman, Kalas. Cesar Azpilicueta was selected in the Spain squad !! What about Mata ? Isco ? Llorente ? Villa ? De Gea ? :v
Hail Cesar! Why Chelsea’s Azpilicueta is without a doubt the Premier League’s most unsung hero. In a team full of club legends such as John Terry and future world class players such as Eden Hazard, it’s easy for other players at the club to go under the radar. In this case it has been Cesar Azpilicueta, who has been excellent this season and without a doubt has become Chelsea’s unsung hero. With Azpilicueta barely featuring in any of the Blues’ games earlier in the season it surely looked like he would only be a bit part player at the club and mainly used as cover for the more regular Branislav Ivanovic, similar to his short time when Roberto Di Matteo was manager. However months later Azpilicueta now finds himself as a vital part of Chelsea’s defence. Rather than jumping ahead of Branislav Ivanovic in the pecking order though, Jose Mourinho has opted to shuffle Azpilicueta over to the left-back position which has ultimately seen Ashley Cole drop to the bench. A season ago this scenario wasn ...
Man City Easily See Off Chelsea Manchester City exacted their revenge on a Chelsea side that has beaten them twice in the Premier League this season with a convincing win that puts them in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri scored the goals that keeps City's dreams of a quadruple alive and the winning margin might have been even more emphatic on a miserable night for Jose Mourinho's men. If Mourinho's previous visit to Etihad Stadium - a 1-0 victory at the start of February - was a tactical triumph for the Blues boss, then this was something similar for his City counterpart Manuel Pellegrini, who enjoyed only his second success in 10 managerial meetings between the pair. In truth, the result was rarely in doubt as soon as Jovetic gave City the lead with a fine low finish in the 16th minute. Chelsea managed just three efforts at goal in the 90 minutes: hopeful shots from distance from Willian and Cesar Azpilicueta that were well off target, and a late Gary Cahill header which ...
Stevan Jovetic scores for Manchester City as Petr Cech and Cesar Azpilicueta look on
GOAL - Man City 1-0 Chelsea - Stevan Jovetic (16 mins) Stevan Jovetic had hit the bar just a minute before as Petr Cech spilled Yaya Toure's shot, but makes no mistake when offered a second bite of the cherry. The Montenegro international outstrips Cesar Azpilicueta for pace to gather Edin Dzeko's pass and apply a slide-rule side-foot finish which checks in off the inside of the far post.
Chelsea predicted line-up vs Manchester City: FA Cup clash sees big guns retain places Adam Davies 11 Hours Ago Chelsea's expected starting XI to face Man City in the FA Cup at the Etihad Stadium as Jose Mourinho attempts to win at Etihad Stadium for the second time in 2014. Schwarzer Mark Schwarzer is Chelsea's cup goalkeeper, having played both the Blues' FA Cup and Capital One Cup7 games, as well as a single match in the UEFA Champions League. The veteran Australian has only conceded once in his six matches this season, and despite the immense calibre of Chelsea's opposition, Jose Mourinho should keep faith. Azpilicueta After sporadic appearances last season, Cesar Azpilicueta has become a first choice full back under Jose Mourinho this term, with England star Ashley Cole being dropped over the Christmas period. He should start at right back at the Etihad Stadium. Branislav Ivanovic With John Terry still a doubt due to injury, Branislav Ivanovic may shift into central defence. The Serbian scored the wi ...
MANCITY VS CHELSEA TACTICAL BRIEF The pattern in previous rounds of this competition has been that Jose Mourinho has rested a few of the players who have played the most. In the previous round's win against Stoke City he made five changes. In came Mark Schwarzer for Petr Cech , Ashley Cole for Cesar Azpilicueta , Frank Lampard and second-debutant Nemanja Matic for John Mikel Obi and John Terry (replaced at the back by David Luiz ), and Andre Schurrle for Ramires . This time around Terry, who has missed his first Premier League minutes of the season in the last week, is out. Gary Cahill limped away from the disappointing draw at the Hawthorns on Tuesday so his fitness is being assessed ahead of this game. Branislav Ivanovic is a possibility to play centre-back with Cole and Azpilicueta as full- backs. Manuel Pellegrini also has factors to contend with. The postponement of the home game against Sunderland meant a free week for his team, though the fixture will have to be crammed into their busy schedule at ...
Sunderland ready bid for Ryan Bertrand Sunderland manager Gus Poyet wants to bring in left back Ryan Bertrand in the summer transfer window. Chelsea have told the defender that he is free to leave Stamford Bridge. Bertrand has slipped down the pecking order at the Bridge after Ashley Cole and Cesar Azpilicueta took the defender's place in the Blues' first team squad. Reports suggest that Sunderland are confident that they can beat Aston Villa to the signing of Bertrand on a permanent transfer. ~Paul~
Chelsea has submitted their roster to the FA (for the remaining season) as followed: Developed Abroad- Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian, Andre Schurrle, John Obi Mikel, Nemanja Matic, Ramires, Cesar Azpilicueta, Branislav Ivanovic, David Luiz, Petr Cech, Mark Schwarzer, Henrique Hilario Homegrown Players- John Terry, Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill, Frank Lampard You'll note that the Blues have only named 20 players to the squad, potentially leaving themselves rather short should any injuries arise. Luckily, domestic rules allow for the club to use any player who still qualifies as a U21. That leaves them plenty of options to choose from, with the following six players being notable: Under 21 Mohamed Salah, Tomas Kalas, Marco van Ginkel, Nathan Ake, Lewis Baker, Jamal Blackman Note: Out of the 25 places available on the roster 8 places are reserved for homegrown players,if the Club does not have that many HG players then these spots ( the remaining ones) on the roster are to b ...

On the August 24 in 2012, Chelsea completed the signing of Marseille right-back Cesar Azpilicueta for £7million. Not well known at the time, the young Spaniard may have been signed to play as a back-up to Branislav Ivanovic, and to start with this was the case. Under Roberto Di Matteo he rarely made the team, only being played in the Capital One Cup. When Di Matteo was sacked, Azpilicueta’s fellow countryman, Rafael Benitez was installed as interim first team manager. This was the moment that Azpilicueta got his opportunity to make the right-back spot his, and that is what he did. It’s hard to think of a bad game Azpilicueta had during that spell, keeping the likes of Gareth Bale quiet against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. His string of excellent performances led to a call-up to his national side, and played the entire 90 minutes on his debut against Uruguay in a 3-1 victory. At the start of this season, Azpilicueta once again found himself struggling to get into the starting eleven under new boss Jo ...

Chelsea have drawn up a three-man shortlist as they target a superstar striker; Arsenal could yet sign Julian Draxler, if they have an interest in the Schalke star; John Terry is either staying at Chelsea or on his way out; - here are the main stories making headlines in this morning's newspapers. Blues draw up £40m striking shortlist: According to The Sun on Wednesday morning, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been told he has £40m to spend on a new striker in the summer and, with the club conceding Wayne Rooney is likely to be refused a move from Old Trafford, have identified Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa, Edinson Cavani of PSG and Bayern Munich star Mario Mandzukic. According to the paper, the aforenamed stars are "the only three names on [Mourinho's] wishlist." Schalke boost Arsenal's Draxler hopes: Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies has said that Julian Draxler will not move to Bayern Munich this summer, giving Arsenal hope they can land the Germany international instead. CAHILL: HUGE PERFORMANCE 04-02-2014 Gary Cahill felt our victory against Manchester City was the perfect response to last week's draw against West Ham United. Branislav Ivanovic scored the only goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium just after the half-hour mark, drilling a sweet left-footed strike beyond Joe Hart, and though City threatened in the second half, an outstanding collective defensive display ensured we headed back to the capital with three priceless points. Cahill, along with the likes of John Terry , Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta , put his body on the line as the home side chased an equaliser, making a number of crucial blocks, and he was understandably delighted with the result. 'It was a huge performance from us,' said the Blues defender. 'We worked hard, in the second half everyone put in a shift and that's what you need to do when you go there. 'Everybody's aware of their home form this season but we put in a great performance and overall I felt we deserved to win the game. 'Obviously t ...

Chelsea destroy City's amazing unbeating home record Olufemi Peters The last time anyone managed to defeat Manchester City at their own turf in the league dates way back to 2010. And so it needed a thoroughly convincing performance from any EPL team to shatter that perfect record. Chelsea rose to the occasion this time around. The blues were the underdogs coming into this match, so getting 3 important points is truly something out of the blue. Even the most ardent chelsea faithful would never have seen this coming, not with City's array of attacking players. It should also be noted that the Citizens were still basking in the euphoria of wallping Spurs by 5 goals to 1 last week. The Eastlanders have arguably the best squad in England, and were rightly the favourites to edge this one. Self -styled special one also alluded to the fact that the Manuel Pellegrini-managed team was the League's most attacking team and was by extension Red-hot favourites to completely annihilate his 'young eggs' This made the ...
Mourinho the master as classy Chelsea see off City A tactical master-class from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, augmented by a fine first-half strike from Branislav Ivanovic, was enough to end Manchester City's 100% Premier League home record as the London club cruised to a comfortable 1-0 victory at the Etihad. An outstanding performance, and the three points gained as a result of it, sees the Blues draw level with the Citizens on 53 points, just two points behind leaders Arsenal. The build up to Monday night's clash of the titans had seen critics of Mourinho and Chelsea far and wide joking that the Stamford Bridge outfit were going to "park the bus", "play 8-1-1", "19th Century Football" and "defend, defend, defend" at the Etihad -- but after the expected early effervescence from Manchester City, as the game evolved, the denigrators shuffled into the shadows as the visitors imposed themselves on a game in which for long periods any independent observer would have thought they were the home side. Despite ...
MANCHESTER, England -- Branislav Ivanovic's first-half goal split the Premier League title race wide-open. Here are three things from Chelsea's 1-0 win over Man City. 1. Mourinho stages a coup The suspicion was that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho might follow last week's gibes at West Ham by installing his own "19th century" tactics. Instead, he staged the type of tactical coup he has trademarked in a decade of snaffling trophies. Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini and Manchester City, regular targets of his, are just the latest victims. Samuel Eto'o's presence meant Chelsea that never quite "parked the plane," as Mourinho described his 2010 Internazionale triumph over Barcelona. Back then, Eto'o played as an auxiliary left-back. This time, he led the line expertly. The pace may be ailing, but his ability to follow instructions remains. Only from the 83rd minute on was a 4-6-0 employed. The presence of Nemanja Matic and David Luiz as a double ballast spelled Chelsea's intent: stop supply lines to Ya ...
layer Ratings: Manchester City vs Chelsea Chelsea Petr Cech – 7 – Had a shaky start to the game in the first 20 seconds but apart from that he did nothing wrong and made some good saves to secure the points for his team. Branislav Ivanovic – 7 – A solid performance from Ivanovic whose fantastic goal won the game for his team. He was effective going forward and defending. John Terry – 8 – Yet another great performance from the leader of what is currently the league’s best defence. Cleared almost everything that came his way. Gary Cahill – 8 – Cahill was excellent alongside Terry and was very unlucky not to score in the second half. The Englishman was as solid as ever this season. Cesar Azpilicueta – 7 – Put in a fantastic display against one of the league’s quickest wingers. The makeshift left-back was also very disciplined in his staying in a defensive position. David Luiz – 7 – A great display from Luiz in defensive midfield. Made sure that Silva got no space in the centre of ...
Chelsea beat Manchester City in their own backyard to blow this title race wide open last night. From the Manager to a man, Chelsea were outstanding and fully deserved three points! I was confident before the game about our chances on the counter attack as I never believed that City weren't impenetrable by any stretch of the imagination, but with the absence of Fernandinho in midfield, Chelsea looked the better balanced side. Now before I get dogs abuse from City fans on here about how if they had Aguero, Nasri and Fernandinho playing it would be a different story, I want to point out one thing, they all played at Stamford Bridge and we beat you there too so just accept the fact that you have been beaten twice! Now, I said before the game that you simply cannot underestimate the power of Mourinho whether it's tactically, his preparation, his in-game decisions or the influence he has during the game from his technical area and tonight I was proven right once again. Mourinho delivered a masterclass in ever ...
Yaya Toure was charging forward, slightly overconfidently leaving Martin Demichelis to guard the back-four. Demichelis, bordering on a liability at times, was playing in midfield because Fernandinho had succumbed to a muscle injury, leaving gaps in the centre which Chelsea’s counter-attackers exploited. Fernandinho was particularly missed in the first half. Mourinho’s players were working so hard, their tone set by the coach himself who leapt around the tech-nical area, commanding plenty of abuse from the neighbouring City fans. ‘‘Jose Mourinho, your football is s---e,’’ chanted the locals. Matching their players for rapidity of thought, Chelsea supporters retorted with: ‘‘Jose Mourinho, he’s won more than you.’’ Twice a Champions League winner, Mourinho applauded the industry and tactical discipline of his players, saluting Nemanja Matic as he ushered Silva away from goal. He clapped as the outstanding Hazard tore upfield, running at and past Pablo Zabaleta. The Belgian also tracked ...
MATCH REPORT: Manchester City 0 CHELSEA 1 04-02-2014 Summary A mighty performance earned a huge win in Manchester on Monday night with Branislav Ivanovic 's sweet first-half strike separating these two title challengers. Until this game City had been behind at home for only eight minutes during this league season but with Jose Mourinho 's game plan working well, we not only ended their 100 per cent record, we also became the first team to stop them scoring on home soil. There could have been more goals too for the visitors, with Samuel Eto'o , Nemanja Matic and Gary Cahill all hitting woodwork, and when City did strike on target, Petr Cech was equal to their best efforts. Team News The defence was unchanged from the draw at home to West Ham and Samuel Eto'o led the attack for the fourth game running, but there were changes in midfield. The height of David Luiz and Nemanja Matic were paired in the centre and ahead of them, Ramires was played wide on the right with Eden Hazard on the left and Willian the mo ...

Man City 0-1 CHELSEA. PLAYER RATING. KTBFFH! Thank you Jose, Thank you Matic, Thank you Cahill and Terry, Thank you Eden Hazard 17, Thank you Cech and Cesar Azpilicueta. And the rest of the boys that out did themselves today!!
Manchester City v Chelsea: Jose Mourinho will defend in numbers and set Eden Hazard free whenever possible Defend deep and in numbers, stifle City's threat, before springing forward using Eden Hazard's great pace, that's how Alan Smith sees Chelsea dealing with goal- crazy opponents Unlike Tottenham on Wednesday, Chelsea surely won't leave the back four exposed by failing to offer enough midfield protection. Jose Mourinho, of course, is a master at this. He will come with a gameplan that involves trying to deny the likes of David Silva any time or space in the final third. In this regard, it will be interesting to see who Mourinho picks to carry out those strict orders. New-boy Nemanja Matic is certainly an option, as is John Obi Mikel. But whoever gets the nod, they look set to play a very disciplined game. In terms of timing his runs, there isn't a better overlapping full-back than Pablo Zabaleta. The Argentine's appreciation of when to make his move and when to stay put is unrivalled in the Premier Lea ...
Chelsea to NOT give world class star deal Ashley Cole may not be getting a new Chelsea deal at the end of the season. Cole played key roles in the successful teams moulded by Mourinho in his first spell at Stamford Bridge. However, he is out of contract in the summer and could leave. Cole is a near-certainty for England’s World Cup squad, but is no longer Mourinho’s first choice. Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic are Mourinho’s preferred full-back pairing. Ashley Cole still England's best left-back, claims Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho CHELSEA boss Jose Mourinho still believes Ashley Cole is England’s best left-back – despite the fact Cesar Azpilicueta is keeping him out of the first team. Cole, 33, with 106 caps under his belt, sees his contract at Chelsea expire in the summer. But Mourinho insists Roy Hodgson should pencil Cole’s name into his squad for a seat on the plane to the World Cup finals in Brazil. Mourinho said: “I think the national team manager knows in every country who are the best players, the ones he can trust. “Ashley is playing well. Okay, he is not playing every game but he is playing well. “And I think that is just what Roy Hodgson wants to know.”

Chelsea news... Chelsea Could Lose England International - According to the Standard, Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand has refused to rule out a permanent move to Villa Park after signing for Aston Villa on loan for the remainder of the Barclays Premier League campaign. Bertrand has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge with Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic dominating the starting full-back
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will be looking for a reaction from his team when the Blues travel to Manchester City this Monday. Chelsea were unfortunate not to win against a dogged West Ham last night, as the Hammers dug in for a point to take back to Upton Park. Mourinho slammed the way West Ham played but focus now needs to turn to how his team can dismantle the highest scorers in the Premier League this season. Here’s the side he could go with. GK – Petr Cech The Czech will continue in goal. He’s a very experienced player and will offer a lot of leadership to the back four, which is important. RB – Branislav Ivanovic Ivanovic has been Chelsea’s primary right-back this season. He’ll be under a lot of pressure in this game but he shouldn’t be exposed too frequently out on his side of the pitch. CB – Gary Cahill Cahill has the pace, the physical presence and the intelligence to play well in this game. He has to be wary of City’s midfield runners, who will come from a variety of different p ...
Chelsea v West Ham players ratings by west london sport It was a frustrating night for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where West Ham defended resolutely to deny them an eighth consecutive win. Here’s how we rated the Blues players in the 0-0 draw. Petr Cech: 7 Didn’t have much to do but produced an important save to keep out James’ Tomkins’ first-half header. Branislav Ivanovic: 7 As determined as ever. He also showed his versatility, both when continuing to bomb forward despite not looking completely comfortable doing so and then when switched to a more defensive role after a second-half reshuffle. Gary Cahill: 8 Calm and composed despite the wet conditions and the physical presence of Andy Carroll. The defender is in excellent form at the moment. John Terry: 7 Also played well at the back. Unlucky not to score with a first-half header from Willian’s corner. Cesar Azpilicueta: 6 Uninspiring but solid enough at left-back before being taken off when boss Jose Mourinho opted for a formation change in ...
Not so long ago, left-back Luke Shaw was a virtual unknown to Premier League enthusiasts outside of Southampton Now, after a rapid rise to prominence with the Saints on the South Coast, the hugely-talented 18-year-old appears to be one of the most eagerly-coveted players in European football. Thanks to a particularly encouraging bout of form and consistency, the England U21 defender - who has gone from strength-to-strength under the guidance of Argentine Mauricio Pochettino - has been linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea. While this particular saga has lurched from one rumour to another since the winter window first opened for business earlier this month, it appears to have heated up somewhat as January has progressed with reports claiming that Manchester United have made a bid of £22 million for Shaw's services but that the player is willing to snub such interest to hold out for a switch to Chelsea. In my opinion, Chelsea must move for Shaw during the summer. While they would perhaps run a ver ...
Chelsea 0-0 West Ham: Hammers frustrate blunt Blues Sam Allardyce's men come away from Stamford Bridge with a point after putting in a well-disciplined defensive display, much to the chagrin of Jose Mourinho West Ham held out for a 0-0 draw as Chelsea had their Premier League title ambitions checked on a frustrating night at Stamford Bridge. Adrian produced a stunning early save, touching Oscar's shot against the crossbar, but the busy night the visiting goalkeeper might have expected never truly materialised. Chelsea dominated the play and Demba Ba was also denied by the woodwork late on, but the home side were persistently thwarted by a West Ham defence as tenacious as it was deep-lying. Andy Carroll also provided a muscular outlet in attack on an evening only soured by events elsewhere for manager Sam Allardyce, as Sunderland's win over Stoke City left them two points from safety. Chelsea are three points shy of the Premier League summit after Manchester City claimed top spot with victory at Tottenham ...

Possible Chelsea Starting Line-Up Against West Ham. Chelsea will take on West Ham on Wednesday Night at the Stamford Bridge, where the Blues will be looking to pick up full three points and keep the pressure on other title challengers. The Blues kept themselves busy in the winter transfer window, as they sold club hero Juan Mata to Manchester United and signed Mohamed Salah from Basel as replacement. However, the Egyptian is unlikely to make his debut against the Hammers.Chelsea are heading into this match on the back of a 1-0 win over Stoke City in the FA Cup, and Mourinho is expected to make few changes from the team that played on Sunday. In the defence, John Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta are expected to return, while David Luiz may retain his place. Nemanja Matic was solid against Stoke City and the Serbian could start tomorrow alongside Ramires, while Frank Lampard could be rested. Andre Schurrle started in the last match in place of Willian, but the German is likely to make way for the Brazilian. Fern ...

Now at the midway point of his second season at Stamford Bridge, Cesar Azpilicueta sat down with the official Chelsea website to *** his time at the club, reflect on his recent run in the side and outline his hopes for the remainder of the campaign… For Cesar Azpilicueta, the first half of the season probably did not followed the pattern he would have imagined back in August when the first ball was kicked. The Spanish full-back had to wait until our Capital One Cup match at Swindon Town, seven games into the campaign, for his first start under Jose Mourinho, and three days later, when we made the trip across London to face Tottenham Hotspur, Branislav Ivanovic was restored to the starting line-up at his expense. His fortunes were to change, however, in unfamiliar circumstances. On Tuesday 22 October, in Gelsenkirchen, with Ashley Cole still nursing a rib injury which he sustained in our win at Norwich nine days earlier, Azpilicueta was given the nod to deputise at left-back against Schalke in the Cha .. ...

Chelsea 2 Liverpool 1: Jose Mourinho attacks 'shot' Liverpool striker Luis Suarez in dive row Jose Mourinho has claimed that Luis Suarez dived to try to win a penalty against Samuel Eto’o and that it was in the Liverpool striker’s “cultural nature” to do anything to win games. After his side’s 2-1 win here the Chelsea manager denied that it was a clear penalty missed by referee Howard Webb, when Eto’o stepped across Suarez with seven minutes left as the Liverpool man tried to retrieve possession from Cesar Azpilicueta. In an interview on television, Mourinho added that it looked “like somebody shot him [Suarez] in the back” and that the player should have been booked. In his press conference later, Mourinho said that Suarez was a “very nice boy” who had been successfully changed by Rodgers but that there was another side to his character. “He’s changed. But when you are losing, the nature comes out of the player. The wild nature, the cultural nature of the player. Culturally, peopl ...

Arsenal 0 Chelsea 0: Dave rides to rescue... Azpilicueta the hero as Jose’s jinx keeps Arsenal off top spot It was rather fitting that on the night when the late John Sullivan’s family were in attendance, Chelsea should be rescued by the man they call Dave. Sullivan was the genius behind Only Fools And Horses, the creator of Del Boy, Rodney, Boycie and Trigger, and a lifelong Arsenal fan. He would have been 67 on Monday. One of his running jokes was that Trigger, no matter how many times he was corrected, mistakenly referred to Rodney as Dave. Discussing Del Boy’s impending fatherhood, Trigger tells his pub audience: ‘If it’s a boy they’re going to call it Rodney.’ Pause. ‘After Dave.’ And so it was that when Cesar Azpilicueta arrived at Stamford Bridge, the players took one look at that name, with its many syllables, that p straight after the z and the tricky cuet sound near the end and decided: Dave. So Dave it is, and Dave it was who, at the moment when Chelsea could have surrendered ...
Liverpool will be top of the Premier League on Christmas Day after Arsenal and Chelsea played out a goalless draw in driving rain at the Emirates Stadium. Jose Mourinho's men wasted the two best chances of a cagey first half, with Frank Lampard striking the underside of the crossbar with a fierce volley and Willian forcing a low save from Wojciech Szczesny. Clear chances remained at a premium after the break, but Olivier Giroud spurned two big opportunities for either side on the night and Cesar Azpilicueta cleared Bacary Sagna's header off the line late on. Jose Mourinho made it 10 matches against Arsene Wenger as Blues manager without suffering defeat as the Gunners saw their winless Premier League run extended to three games. Wenger made four changes from the side beaten 6-3 by Manchester City last time out, Thomas Vermaelen replacing the injured Laurent Koscielny in defence, while Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta came in for the suspended Jack Wilshere and Mathieu Flamini in midfield. Frank Lampard was ...
ARSENAL AND CHELSEA DRAW 0-0 AT Emirates Stadium Arsenal and Chelsea shared a scrappy goalless stalemate at the Emirates on Monday to leave Liverpool top at Christmas. In a tight opening period in this London derby, Frank Lampard volleyed against the bar. John Obi Mikel was perhaps fortunate to avoid a red card for a studs-up tackle on Mikel Arteta and, in the same move, referee Mike Dean also opted not to award a penalty when Willian tripped Theo Walcott. After the break, Olivier Giroud shot wide and Thomas Vermaelen had an effort cleared off the line by Cesar Azpilicueta as Arsenal could not find the win they needed to retake the Premier League lead. The Gunners are now level on points with Liverpool at the top, while the stalemate sees Chelsea move back into fourth, two points off the top. The draw means Arsene Wenger remains without a victory over Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.
Theo Walcott of Arsenal joins Ramires in the referee's book for a foul on Cesar Azpilicueta. We've now had 65 minutes. It's 0-0.
Liverpool have set their sights on Chelsea wing-back Ryan Bertrand according to the Daily Mail. Having lured Daniel Sturridge from the Stamford Bridge club Brendan Rodgers will look to bring in the 24 year old to Anfield as he seeks to strengthen his defensive options. Bertrand has played second fiddle to Ashley Cole for a number of years and has recently seen Cesar Azpilicueta jump ahead of him in Jose Mourinho's first team pecking order. Liverpool have seen youngster John Flanagan impress since stepping to fill the spot usually filled by injured Spaniard Jose Enrique and Rodgers may feel that Bertrand, who can also play in a winger role, could offer the club more strength in depth to his squad as he pushes for a coveted top four finish. Bertrand has only started one Premier League fixture this season and is perhaps a player Mourinho feels he can afford to lose in January. Bally

Ki Sung-yueng was the hero as Sunderland dumped Chelsea out of the Capital One Cup to book a place in the semi-finals. The South Korea international, on loan at the Stadium of Light from Cup holders Swansea City, struck in the final minute of extra-time to complete a famous 2-1 win and end Jose Mourinho's hopes of winning the trophy which gave him his first honour during his previous spell at Stamford Bridge. Lee Cattermole's own goal looked to have sent Chelsea through to the last four until substitute Fabio Borini struck with just two minutes of normal time remaining to send the tie into extra-time. Indeed, the Italian might have won it in stoppage time had it not been for Gary Cahill's desperate challenge with the Black Cats mounting a late charge. But Mourinho will have been fuming after the visitors had entered the closing stages of the initial 90 minutes in control and having squandered chances to kill the tie off. They had taken the lead when the unfortunate Cattermole bundled Cesar Azpilicueta's 4 ...

I WILL NOT DROP CESAR FOR COLE ~ MOURINHO Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted out of favour LB Ashley Cole remain on the bench with Cesar Azpilicueta continuing as 1st choice. And he said: "I think any player that normally starts matches,&Ashleyhas started matches through all his career, when they don't start, naturallythey're not the happiest guy in the camp. "But professionally he is always. A team player? Yes. Friend of his friend? Yes. "He deserves to play, but Azpilicueta is doing really well,so it's a question of Ashley working&waitingfor his opportunity. But he's more than ready to play." Mourinho added: "He could play in 1 of these 2 matches,I think he will. Or,if I decide not to,next week vs Steaua Bucharest. "It's a position where Azpilicueta has played a group of consecutive matches so sooner or later I'll have to change,so Ashley will play soon."

Athletic Club Bilbao likely to miss out on Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has hinted that Ashley Cole may stay on the bench for Chelsea's next game as Cesar Azpilicueta "is playing very well". The Spanish defender, who usually plays on the right of a back four, has deputised at left-back in the absence of Cole, and Mourinho said that the 24-year-old may continue in the position. "Azpilicueta is playing very well," Mourinho told West London Sport after Chelsea's 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion. "Let's see what happens next week, but he played well against Schalke and he played very well again with zero mistakes. "I didn't like his [Cole's] performance against Newcastle so made a change and the answer from Azpi was good and I didn't feel I had any reason to leave him out."
Is Ashley another victim of Mourinho's revamping plans?..After more than a decade at the very top Cole could finally be facing life as a sub Not many people at Chelsea enjoyed Saturday’s draw with West Brom. Ashley Cole might have enjoyed it least. The left back was on the bench for the second time in a week, with Cesar Azpilicueta — a right back — replacing him. When Jose Mourinho threatened to shuffle his pack after the poor display against Newcastle, no-one thought Cole would be facing the axe. The feeling ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League victory over Schalke and Saturday’s match was that he must be carrying an injury. But, when pressed if Cole was still feeling the effects of the rib injury that kept him out of England’s vital World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland last month, Mourinho simply answered: ‘No, he is fine.’ Mourinho, asked about Cole’s second successive omission, said: ‘I can make mistakes, I can be unfair — but I always give a lot of thought to my d ...
We had a bad draw last night. Take away the bad refereeing, Chelsea were not at their best on that match. Awful, for me. So who's your worst & best players & substitutes for last night's match? Here's mine. Worst Player: Frank Lampard - Despite the awful goalkeeping by Petr Cech & defending by Gary Cahill, Lampard for me, was the worst player. The pivot were definitely not for him, awful. There were times where both Ramires & Lampard were not at their own half when WBA's players go for the counter-attack. Mourinho did the right thing by took him & Cesar Azpilicueta out & brought on Ba upfront & Mikel to just sits there on the pivot, allowing Ramires to go on. Best Player: Eden Hazard - The Belgian had been restored to the starting line-up after being dropped in midweek for arriving back late from a trip to watch his former club Lille. And he justified his manager's faith with an energetic performance. Provided a fierce shot which later Samuel Eto'o dithering Liam Ridgewell & poke home his 4th goal for the ...

E*L*A*T*E*D! “It Was A Good Response” – Mourinho Happy With Chelsea’s Win Over Schalke Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, was delighted with his side’s 3-0 win over Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday. Samuel Eto’o grabbed a brace, while Demba Ba volleyed in the third goal, to give the Blues all three points. “I think it was good [response] but of course the first 15 minutes were difficult, we were a team without big maturity and stability after the defeat on Sunday. After that we played very well and kept possession in a comfortable way and after the first goal we played well,” Mourinho said. “I know Petr Cech made a fantastic save for a possible 1-1 but everybody worked hard and made defensive work especially the wingers against their full-backs.” Mourinho also revealed how he told Eto’o to close down Schalke keeper, Timo Hilderbrand, which eventually led to the first goal of the game. MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 3 SCHALKE 0 Summary Chelsea's position in Group E was greatly strengthened by our third straight win in the competition, a Samuel Eto'o double strike and a late goal from substitute Demba Ba giving us back-to-back victories over the Bundesliga side. If Eto'o's first goal tonight owed a lot an opposition mistake, the second certainly didn't when he capped a swift move with an emphatic finish. Schalke had threatened early on but were kept at bay for most of the game although Petr Cech was called on early in the second half with the score 1-0. Team News As he promised, Jose Mourinho made changes, six in total with Cesar Azpilicueta playing left-back as he had in Germany two weeks ago. Gary Cahill , John Mikel Obi , Willian and Andre Schurrle all returned to the side, and Eto'o replaced injured Fernando Torres in attack. Schalke's changes from the first meeting were in attack too with Adam Szalai back as striker and Kevin-Prince Boateng dropping back. Christian Fuchs came into midfield. ...
Terry - Eto'o goal no fluke The ability to keep such a large, talented squad happy, is key to Chelsea being successful this season, he added. "It was wrong of us to say it was Chelsea's 'B' team that took part in the Capital One Cup at the Emirates a few weeks ago," said Wilkins. "Mourinho can change eleven and throw eleven in because they're so good. "Just look at Cesar Azpilicueta who came in at left full-back as a right-footed player but didn't look out of place at all. He deputised fantastically well for Ashley Cole. "Mourinho gets the group as a unit and builds a siege mentality in a pleasant manner. "Man management at this level is more important. All these players know how to play technically and tactically so it's about keeping the human being happy and Jose does it really well. "He puts an arm around the one that needs an arm around them and kicks up the backside the one that needs a kick up the backside. He does that really well." 0 Comments

After a shock loss against Newcastle at the weekend, Chelsea got back to winning ways against Schalke on Wednesday night. Jose Mourinho made significant changes to the team that was beaten on Tyneside, and goals from Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba secured victory. With the Blues getting back to business as usual, here are five observations from the Stamford Bridge encounter. Strikers start to score With Fernando Torres starting to hit form but suffering from injury, both Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba put their hands up for future inclusion by getting goals in the victory. The Cameroon international scored a brace, with the second a flashback to the days of his pomp, while Ba came off the bench to prove he is not ready to accept a Stamford Bridge exit just yet. In the short-term, Mourinho will have some selection decisions to make once Torres returns to fitness, while his thoughts on purchasing a new centre forward in January could be potentially impacted by the pair’s defiance. MATCH REPORT: ARSENAL 0 CHELSEA 2 31-10-2013 Summary Goals from Cesar Azpilicueta and Juan Mata ensure we celebrate Jose Mourinho 's 200 th game as manager like so many, with a win, in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup. Our Spanish right-back struck his first Chelsea goal before the interval, capitalising on a short Carl Jenkinson back-pass to volley home from inside the box. That means we have had three new goalscorers in the space of 10 days, Azpilicueta joining Andre Schurrle and Samuel Eto'o in notching their first for the club. The lead was doubled three- quarters of the way through the match via the right boot of Mata, whose sweetly-struck shot whistled past Lukasz Fabianski for his first goal of the season. In the end, it was a fairly comfortable victory for the much- changed Blues, with our opponents offering little threat going forward. It was in this competition that Mourinho lifted his first trophy as Chelsea boss, and tonight's victory means we are still on course to emulate that feat ni ...
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on leaving out Eden Hazard: "I prefer to say that Willian and Andre Schurrle made fantastic work for us. We have a big squad, we have players with quality, players who sometimes are frustrated because they are not first options but when they are chosen they do so well. "The other thing for me is Cesar Azpilicueta played in position which is not his first and he did so well. Let's forget Eden because I didn't select him and on Saturday he will be with the team. We know his talent, he will be on the bench or playing, but he will be in the squad for sure."

Arsenal 0 Chelsea 2: Azpilicueta and Mata continue Mourinho's hoodoo over Wenger At the final whistle there was a touching moment when Mesut Ozil ran towards Jose Mourinho and handed him his jersey. On Tuesday night, Chelsea’s manager had the shirts off Arsenal’s backs. There is nothing for Mourinho to be afraid of here, nothing to suggest the Gunners have his side’s staying power.
