Environment Canada had issued a freezing rain warning for Lloydminster - Wainwright - Vermilion - Provost Freezing rain this evening. A low over Southern Alberta is producing a heavy band of precipitation through Central Alberta from Grande Cache into Saskatchewan. Freezing rain has been reported east of Edmonton from Sherwood Park to Wainwright. The freezing rain is expected to be short lived as the rain will transition to snow this evening. Further west, the snow has started to accumulate over Grande Cache. 15 cm has already been reported and a further 10 cm is expected overnight. Frigid temperatures and brisk winds will generate extreme wind chill values between minus 40 and minus 50 at Fort Chipewyan beginning overnight. Extreme wind chill values are forecast to persist into Sunday afternoon until winds diminish. At these extreme wind chill values frostbite on exposed skin may occur in less than 5 minutes.
Freezing rain warning for City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park Freezing rain expected this evening and overnight. A warm front will push into West-Central Alberta this evening and bring with it periods of freezing rain. Freezing rain will begin early this evening near the British Columbia border and then Progress east towards Central Alberta by Monday morning. Conditions will improve by mid-morning. Areas to the south and east of the warned regions are advised to monitor the forecasts this evening as there is a chance freezing rain will occur in these areas overnight into Monday morning as well. In addition temperatures near the Saskatchewan border have fallen to near minus 30 and south winds have come up to 20 km/h creating wind chills near minus 45. Discovering Alberta's local food destinations: Gull Lake, Aug 17 & 18 You’re invited as Gail Hall continues her discovery of Alberta’s food resources with a tour to Central Alberta. You'll start with a Farmers’ Market tour in Edmonton to see the vendors the tour will be visiting later at their farms. Visit an organic dairy that ships milk across Canada and a gigantic greenhouse. Enjoy a farm picnic and then tour a cheese making plant. It’s the centennial of Sylvan Lake, where you’ll overnight, after a great dinner prepared by a local chef. The next day you will indulge in an Icelandic lunch, tour a historic creamery and visit a market garden. On the way home you’ll visit another producer and be home in time for supper. Visit for more information!
Crazy storm day shaping up today. Chicago and parts of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Indiana are under a high risk of extreme winds and tornadoes. My guess is that by the end of the day there wont be much else on the news other than this weather story. North West is also interesting with Severe Thunderstorms and some tornadoes in Montana and Southwest Saskatchewan and Central Alberta (Edmonton Region). Team Tornado Hunter is currently at Coronach, Sask heading west into the watch area. We will have to play the timing just right today as all of the border crossings into Montana have limited hours. If we cross into Montana we likely wont be able to get back into Sask. If we wait too long and the storms develop farther south in Montana we likely will be too late... tough call. Tell us what you think is the best plan. Follow our live stream when storms fire up later this afternoon.
Red Deer First supports the fifth Candidate, David Helm. Article in Todays Red Deer Advocate... A grain farmer who fixes vintage Harley-Davidson motorcycles says the City of Red Deer is in desperate need of repairs. And David Helm says he’s just the man to do it. Helm is the fifth candidate under the Red Deer First banner to declare intentions to run for Red Deer city council in the Oct. 21 civic election. Helm, 58, said the current council’s free-spending, liberal ways have bothered him to the point where he can “put up or shut up.” “It’s time for me to get up and do something,” said Helm. “I think we have too far liberal of a government running the city right now and we need the conservative approach. Central Alberta people tend to be conservative.” Helm said he brings his speciality in debt management and attention to detail to the table because of his farming background and running his own business. Helm grew up in Irma, near Wainwright, where he continues to farm. He owns a vintage ...

Hey all my friends in the UK, we just got issues with a Flash Freeze warning! "Temperatures have risen above freezing for most of Central Alberta today creating an early snow melt. However, a cold front moving in from the north will bring a rapid drop in temperature this afternoon and early this evening, which will cause the melt water to refreeze. Peace River saw temperatures fall from plus 5 to minus 9 in 3 hours with the passage of this cold front. The areas that will see the greatest cooling are communities to the north and northeast of Edmonton." So that's a drop of 14 degrees in 3 hours, nice!

How did you ring in the new year in East Central Alberta?
Copyright/Source 1923 - 1950: The Williams Treaties and Land Transfer Agreements This period was a decisive one in Aboriginal history in Canada. While the William Treaties would clean up many faulty land cession agreements dating back to the 1700s, they would come at a price: the complete loss of fishing and hunting rights for Aboriginals on surrendered lands. What was more, some western provinces received new powers to rule over hunting and fishing land. However, it is in this period that Aboriginals began to come into their own by organizing protest movements.
