Happy 71st birthday, Michelle Phillips, shown here back in the day with Cass Elliot (right).
Interesting entertainment section ad from the '60s with some history in the making. Some jazz greats, Bob Dylan at The Mosque Theater in Newark, NJ and two acts at Carnegie Hall - Halifax III and The Journeymen - which would morph into two of the biggest groups of the '60s. Canadians Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky were in Halifax III. John and Michelle Phillips were in The Journeymen. When Halifax III broke up, Denny and Zal joined The Mugwumps which featured Cass Elliot and Jim Hendricks. Zal got the boot from The Mugwumps, met John Sebastian and they formed Lovin' Spoonful. When The Mugwumps folded, Denny joined John and Michelle Phillips (and later Cass Elliot) to form The Mamas and the Papas.
Why would I want to be Michelle Phillips when I'm already Cass Elliot?
Mood: wanting to punch Michelle Phillips for referring to Cass Elliot as "huge."
The Mamas and the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group that recorded and performed from 1965 to 1968, reuniting briefly in 1971. They released five studio albums and seventeen singles, six of which made the top ten, and sold close to 40 million records worldwide. The group comprised John Phillips (1935–2001), Canadian Denny Doherty (1940–2007), Cass Elliot (1941–1974), and Michelle Phillips née Gilliam (b. 1944). Their sound was based on vocal harmonies arranged by John Phillips, the songwriter, musician, and leader of the group who adapted folk to the new beat style of the early sixties.
Judging by the SNL promos this wk, Charlize Theron should play Michelle Phillips in a skit. And I guess Aidy Bryant should play Cass Elliot.
Monday Inspiration. Watching the 3 DVD set of Monterey Pop Festival by D.A. Pennebaker just because I was recollecting The Mamas & The Papas songs yesterday. I think I needed such a visual and sonic journey back to the summer of sixty-eight. I may be a hippie deep inside of my heart and yep, I am seeing some of my favourite bands just like Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Animals, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and Ravi Shankar. What else could you ask from a band that can inspire you even on Monday mornings (Monday,Monday) and to make you travel back in time with your personal time machine to Monterey.Thank you : John Phillips, Denny Doherty , Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot. Only Michelle is still alive while the others are looking through another door. The door of perception.
*** re MAmma Cass Elliot: Death[edit source | editbeta] At the height of her solo career in 1974, Elliot performed two weeks of sold-out concerts at the London Palladium. She telephoned Michelle Phillips after the final concert on July 28, elated that she had received standing ovations each night. She then retired for the evening, and died in her sleep at age 32. Sources state her death was due to a heart attack. ELLIOT DIED IN A LONDON FLAT NO 12, 9 CURZON PLACE, Shepherd Market, Mayfair, which was on loan from singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson. Four years later, The Who's drummer KEITH MOON DIED IN THE SAME FLAT AT THE SAME AGE Elliot was entombed in Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Last surviving member of The Mamas and the Papas, Michelle Phillips, turns 68 today. After the breakup of the band in 1968, she toured with Leonard Cohen, did studio work (including backup vocals on "Basketball Jones" for Cheech and Chong), and began an acting career in 1970. She has also written an autobiography, been married five times and has three children. Here are a couple of things she has said. "I will say this about Dennis Hopper: We were married for eight days and truly . . . they were the happiest days of my life." "(about her friend `Mama` Cass Elliot) There will never be anyone like her in my lifetime. I will never have a friend like her, or an influence like her. And I will never hear another voice like hers." "I don`t mind feeling naked. I`m fine with nothing." "(asked what word comes to mind when she looks into a mirror) Lucky." "When a woman is incarcerated, she`s expected to give up her freedom, but not her soul."
