Carole Lombard ~ Chameleon Lombard was eager to win an Academy Award, and selected her next project—from several possible scripts—with the expectation that it would bring her the trophy. Vigil in the Night (1940), directed by George Stevens, featured Lombard as a nurse who faces a series of personal difficulties. Although the performance was praised she did not get her nomination, as the sombre mood of the picture turned audiences away and box-office returns were poor. Despite the realization that she was best suited to comedies, Lombard completed one more drama: They Knew What They Wanted (1940), co-starring Charles Laughton, which was mildly successful.

Cary Grant, Carole Lombard and Ronald Colman preparing for an NBC radio show (1939). Barely three years later Carole Lombard would die in a tragic plane crash which would suspend principal photography on George Steven's film The Talk of The Town (1942) which had starred Cary Grant, Ronald Colman and Jean Arthur. This same film also marked the first time since the silent era that Ronald Colman would receive second billing to another male lead.
Interesting story about Clark Gable, he joined the Army air Corps at 41 years old, after the death of his beloved wife Carole Lombard. Who's plane crash outside of Las Vegas going over Mount potency, she was doing a USO tour here in Las Vegas going back to Los Angeles. Clark Gable immediately came to Las Vegas for a rescue effort, they were deemed the king and queen of Hollywood at that time. Clark Gable eventually joined the US Army air Corps, and was a tail gunner on a B-17, apparently finishing all of his bombing missions and runs. And on the classic-movie front, Gene Raymond and Carole Lombard visit the Fair in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
During a forty-one year film career, appearing in more than seventy-one films, the one role that made her a screen legend was when she played in what is considered the greatest children"s classic of all time, 1939"s, "The Wizard Of Oz", where she appeared as The Wicked Witch Of The West. Margaret Hamilton was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Dec. 9th., 1902, the youngest of four children. She made her stage debut in 1933 at the age of twenty-one. She was not a Hollywood glamour girl and so she was offered many roles as a charcter actress. On June 13th., 1931, she married Paul Meserve and they had one son born in 1936 whom she raised on her own after divorcing her husband in 1938. In 1937 she appeared with Clark Gable and Jean Harlow in "Saratoga", and the same year she was in "Nothing Sacred" with Carole Lombard and Fredric March. Buck Jones (December 12, 1891 – November 30, 1942) was an American motion picture star of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, known for his work starring in many popular western movies. In his early film appearances, he was billed as Charles Jones. Charles Frederick Gebhart was born on the outskirts of Vincennes, Indiana on December 12, 1891. (Some sources erroneously indicate December 4, 1889, but Jones's marriage license and his military records confirm the 1891 date. In 1907, Jones joined the US Army a month after his sixteenth birthday: his mother had signed a consent form that gave his age as eighteen. He was assigned to Troop G, 6th Cavalry Regiment, and was deployed to the Philippine islands in October, 1907, where he served in combat and was wounded during the Moro Rebellion. Upon his return to the U.S. in December, 1909, he was honorably discharged at Fort McDowell, California. Beth & I are observing the holidays in our own way, by playing our original game, "Celebrity Death Swap," over dinner. It goes like this: You pick a public figure who died far too young and, to rectify the loss of that person, swap him or her for a comparable person who burned out young and hung around unproductively too long. It began when I suggested swapping George Gershwin for Irving Berlin. Since then, our list has ballooned: Carole Lombard for Lana Turner, John Garfield for James Cagney,Selena for Jennifer Lopez, Tupac Shakur for Will Smith, John Kennedy Toole for JD Salinger, Heath Ledger for Owen Wilson -- and a few tough ones; Buddy Holly for Willie Nelson right after "Red Headed Stranger," James Dean for Marlon Brando after "The Godfather," Sam Cooke for Ray Charles after "Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music." For me, these are the 10 (+1) prettiest actresses. They all have something special. Not nececerly in order: Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, Vivien Leigh, Jean Simmons, Rita Hayworth, Joan Fontaine, Carole Lombard, Ginger Rogers, Katharine Hepburn and Debbie Reynolds Of course there are many other pretty actresses like Marelebe Dietrich, Veronica Lake, Kim Novak. But this is my choice And you, who do you think are the 10 prettiest actresses? Girls we can be jalous! ;)
When people say "Women can't be funny" I would usually point them to Lucille Ball, Moms Mabley, Carole Lombard, and Marie Dressler.
Very happy to be a part of this group! I've been interested in Carole Lombard's life since first reading Garson Kanin's book HOLLYWOOD when I was a kid.
The first actress I ever liked was Amy Jo Johnson. I have seen almost everything she has ever been in. It's safe to say that I grew up with her because I followed her from Power Rangers to Disney's Susie Q to Felicity when it aired on Net Flix. Her birthday is October 6th like Carole Lombard. But the character she plays Kimberly Hart's birthday was Valentine's Day (the Red Ranger's was Halloween. I am sensing a theme here. And Yes, I did learn this from the trading cards.) So for Valentine's weeks following, I decided the pink ranger needed to happen.   My whole childhood revolved around the power rangers. I saved up my allowance to buy my first pink ranger shirt with shorts. It cost thirteen dollars and I got it from K-Mart. I had power ranger evreything, bed sheets, figures, pogs, trading cards, soap. I had the audio tape that was the sound track to the movie and I listened to it religiously. I also used to record the show on audio tapes and I pretending to be the masked purple ranger would record myse ...
MARILYN MILLER In the mid to late 1940s Ben Lyon, a Twentieth Century Fox executive and former leading man, signed up a pretty blond actress named Norma Jean Baker. Lyon did not like the name Norma Jean and chose "Carole Lind" as a stage name, after Carole Lombard and Jenny Lind, but he soon decided it was not an appropriate choice. The former photographic model was invited to spend the weekend with Lyon and his wife Bebe Daniels at their home with the intention of finding her a new name. Following her idol Jean Harlow, she decided to choose her mother's maiden name of Monroe. Several variations such as Norma Jean Monroe and Norma Monroe were tried and initially "Jean Monroe" was chosen. Eventually, Lyon decided Jean and variants were too common, and he decided on a more powerful sounding name, one that bespoke talent and show business and joy of life, so he suggested "Marilyn", commenting that she reminded him of Marilyn Miller. Lyon had co-starred with Miller and W.C. Fields in Miller's last and best m ...

I adore this happy, natural shot of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, 1940. Heartbreaking that it would be cut short.

I love her movies. She and Carole Lombard died too young. They were fantastic actresses

Hilarious movie from 1934 "Twentieth Century" with John Barrymore and Carole Lombard, highly recommend when you want a comedy break
Carole Lombard Gable.. I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.. Here in Cabuyao or in Quezon City.. or wherever I am.. It doesn't matter where I am.. I had dreamt of her her in Cabuyao.. I have dreamt of her in Quezon City.. Now I get goosbumps thinking of what really happened to her that fateful night of January 16, 1942.. With what Orson Welles had said in an interview with filmmaker Henry Jaglomin in 1983.. This is how the conversation went.. "H.J.: Was it Norma Shearer, [Irving] Thalberg’s widow, who was killed in that plane crash? O.W.: No, no. She wasn’t killed in a plane. That was another thing that is amazing. After Thalberg died, Norma Shearer — one of the most minimally talented ladies ever to appear on the silver screen, and who looked like nothing, with one eye crossed over the other — went right on being the queen of Hollywood. Everybody used to say, “Mrs. Thalberg is coming,” “Miss Shearer is arriving,” as though they were talking about Sarah Bernhardt. H.J.: Or ...
REQUEST: Fireball: Carole Lombard and the Mystery of Flight... by Robert Matzen -
Was settling in for a late evening of proofreading, except the job took all of 45 minutes. So: Cary Grant or Carole Lombard?
i know you guys stayed pretty recent, but Carole Lombard (died @ 33 in a plane crash) was a huge loss to WWII-era Hollywood (1/2)
is a lost screwball heroine from the 30's, like Katharine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby or Carole Lombard in Twentieth Century.

Chester Morris was one lucky guy where devastatingly beautiful blondes of the cinema were concerned. Not only did he get to romance Jean in "Red-Headed Woman," he also paired with Thelma Todd and Carole Lombard (twice). (With Carole in "Sinners in the Sun," made in 1932.)
