When I was watching the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on HBO the other night, there was a clip of Linda Ronstadt saying how her career took off after she appeared at the Troubadour, which is in West Hollywood near Beverly Hills. This brought back memories for me, as during the 1970s I went to the Troubadour several times, seeing such performers as Don Mclean (who sang Amerocan Pie) twice, Neil Sedaka, Johnny Rivers and a slew of others. The Troubadour has a unique atmosphere, as it only seats about 200 people, so you have a good seat no matter where you sit. The only cost was a two drink minimum, which cost only about $15bucks in those days. Elton John made his first U.S. appearance there on August 25, 1970, being introduced by Neil Diamond. Others who performed there were James Taylor, Carole King, Jackson Browne, The Eagles, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Bette Midler, The Pointer Sisters and Bruce Springstein. Comics Cheech & Chong and Steve Martin were discovered t ...

Can't recall the previous time to this one (shown in this photo) when I wore a suit, closed shirt, and tie - living the natural life in Sedona as I do. But for show-business, I put on what I call the "monkey suit." The reason is that I was in the dress rehearsal for “Long Island Purim,” the sing-along show based on the “Book of Esther,” Sunday, March 16, 10:00-11:15 am, at the Jewish Community of Sedona (JCS), a free event. This show is set in modern-day Long Island with Esther as the new wife of a billionaire businessman, rather than a queen in ancient Persia; but she still “saves” the Jews from being fired en mass from a large corporation, rather than executed. I shall play the role of Mordecai, who is Esther’s uncle/guardian. The songs we all shall sing were adapted from the works of Long Island composers (Paul Simon, Carole King, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel and Marvin Hamlisch). The JCS is at 100 Meadowlark Dr., off Hwy 179, Sedona.

Come hear the music of the foothills - Greater Grass Valley will enliven your sense of sound, sights and enjoyment! “I Can Hear Music” Plays thru June 23 LeGacy Presents it’s first musical, I Can Hear Music, celebrating the songwriters from the famous Brill Building in New York City, May 31st through June 23rd. In 1958, Bobby Darin hit it big with “Splish Splash, I Was Taking A Bath”. With the money from that song, along with Don Kirshner, Darin rented out office space at 1650 Broadway, the famous Brill Building of Tin Pan Alley. Kirshner brought in young songwriters from the area, writing next door to each other in what Carole King described as “a cubicle with a piano, a bench and an ashtray. If you wrote a hit, they moved you to a cubicle with a window!” Joining the likes of Gerry Goffin, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Phil Spector, Hal David and Burt Bacharach, and money others, King wrote her first big hit “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”?, followed by “Locomotion”, “Into Somethin ...

People of the Libretto: The Brill Building Edition The Brill Building, located at 1619 Broadway at 49th Street, is well known for housing music industry offices where some of the most famous American pop songs were written in the fifties and sixties. A uniquely talented group of Jewish songwriters – including Carole King, Burt Bacharach, Neil Sedaka, Leiber & Stoller, and Neil Diamond – fused R&B, Latin music, Broadway, and Tin Pan Alley into original sounds that changed the face of music forever. Songs like “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” “Twist and Shout,” “Love Will Keep Us Together,” “Teenager in Love,” “Under the Boardwalk,” “Walk on By,” “Leader of the Pack,” “Love Potion No. 9,” and “I Feel the Earth Move” were created in the Brill Building and will be performed in this show. City Congregation member Jack Lechner will present the history of the era and the songs. The songs will be performed by congregation members Rachel Dahill-Fuchel, Jolie Elins, T ...
The Monkees is a rock band whose members are from Los Angeles, USA. The group was originally created for a TV sitcom of the same name on NBC, were selected from more than 500 young people (among those rejected were musicians who later became famous as Stephen Stills and Danny Hutton, as producers were more interested in creating a business concept to be talented musicians) who were auditioning for a TV show and records produced by Don Kirshner. The show had an irreverent sense of humor, very similar or rather copied to "A Hard Day's Night", the first movie starring The Beatles, in addition to this only two of them were musicians (Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork) and the rest he learned to play on the fly, while his first album the track was played and composed by the best musicians and composers from the United States as Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond and Bobby Hart Tommy Boice and so could not have failure in the appearance of success but there was none between 1966 and 1968. From Headquarters dis ...

All my daughter's life I have been introducing her to older music. At a certain point I decided to move outside my childhood and start getting older popular music - music of my mother's era, etc - and outside my normal interest - music of friends, etc. (I have already introduced her to my music: Dead Can Dance, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, The Pixies, etc) I have had three huge hits with her: Journey (Best of), Neil Diamond (Best of) and Carole King (Tapestry). And two odd failures: New Order (Best of) and The Mamas and the Papas (Best of). Only 3 solid songs on the former, and 2 on the later, were any good. I have Police (Synchronicity) and Prince (Purple Rain) on the way - and a "Best of Frank Sinatra". Do you have any bands you would recommend? I am looking for bands whose "Best of" really does have 4+ great songs on it. Pull me farther out of my wheel house! Any genre but classical and jazz (I have those covered).
Neil Diamond, Carole King, Elton John all reside at Free with No Annoying Ads!!
