TONIGHTThursday February 20 KJ Denhert with Geoff Gallante! www.KJDenhert.com Guitarist and songwriter, KJ Denhert, calls her music Urban Folk and Jazz. Her voice is powerful, her lyrics full of intelligent insight, and her musicianship is impeccable. Her eclectic yet unified performances reach out to audiences without compromising her music and beliefs. She performs the unusual feat of being both highly individual and quite accessible. KJ remembers, “I picked up a guitar when I was ten and immediately I started writing music. I loved Sergio Mendes’ songs and really got into James Taylor and Joni Mitchell who I still consider my two main influences. I also loved the singer-songwriters of the time including Carole King and Laura Nyro and later fell in love with Steely Dan’s music, and just wore out my copy of Hubert Laws’ Rite of Spring.” KJ co-produced her CD, Number 9, supported by a strong cadre of players, including longtime New York Unit band members Mamadou Ba , (Harry Belafonte, Regina Car ...

I came to Warren’s music at a very interesting time in my life. I was in college. I was starting to realize the next few years of my life were going to be nothing but tests and research papers. My luck with the ladies was abysmal. I has a pretty nasty case of depression I simply wasn’t dealing with. Times were…. Difficult to say that least. So I escaped into the one thing I’ve always managed to find comfort in, especially in a life plagued with discomfort and having to hide the fact that I was just kind of sad all time, music. So jumped in to the deep end and just started listening to everything and anything that caught my interest. It was during this time that I really got a good taste of some of the great solo artists of rock that came out of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Jim Croce, James Taylor, Carole King, the late great Laura Nyro (there will be more on her in a later post I’m sure) and so many more. But few peaked my interest more than the enigma that is Warren Zevon. Like most people ...
The fact that Valerie isn't held in the same regard as Carole King&Laura Nyro is as good an indictment of white feminism as any
Up there with Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Laura Nyro. Just mesmerising, sent a warm glow through me for the whole show. Better than ever!
Recension från JazzWax.com "I half-expected an album of songbook standards but instead found all originals—and a voice with late-’60s femme-folk urgency backed by her smart piano accompaniment. She’s joined by Alfred Götesson on drums, Jim Kaneko-on guitar, Göran Lundberg on bass and Robert Nordmark on sax. Sample Time to Learn, Ordinary, Breezy Morning and Nobody Knows. Jazz colored by vocal shades of Laura Nyro and Carole King."
Kelly Clarkson is singing tributes to the Lifetime Achievement Award winners. Carole King is one of them, and Ms. Clarkson is doing an actually very good version of "Natural Woman." Carole King is simply one of the greatest songwriters who has ever walked this planet. One of those that I listen to and wonder, "Why do I bother?"
GroovyGirl poll: There are so many Groovy Girls: Dusty, Petula, Carole King, Laura Nyro, Lesley Gore, Cher, Cass, Carly, Miss Ross, Darlene Love, Lulu, Dame Shirley, Cilla and so on -- Which 60s GroovyGirl is your favorite -- and which songs of their's are your favorites?
For as heavily as Laura Nyro factors into the Geffen doc, I hardly know her music at all (relative to Joni Mitchell, Carole King etc.).
If Adele is this generation's Dusty Springfield, then Rumer is the Laura Nyro or Carole King of today. Her voice is smooth as butter.
When you listen to Laura Nyro you understand where Carole King came from.
I'm listening to Barbra Streisand's "Stoney End" (1971) album (on CD) right now. One of my faves, a "near-perfect" set of tunes by one of the best set of pipes in the business. Her tone, control, breath and phrasing are unbeatable. With songs by Laura Nyro, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and more! How in the world can anyone live without music to lift their souls?
One of the top women in rock and roll history, along with Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Debbie Harry,Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Laura Nyro, Ellie Greenwich, Joan Jett, Ann&Nancy Wilson, and too many others too numerous to mention
its a Carole King, Laura nyro, Shalamar, Somokey Robinson kind of day.bam
"Up on the Roof"--Laura Nyro's version (and my favorite) of this song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King,...
Nothing could be better than Bette Midler inducting Laura Nyro, and Carole King inducting Don Kirschner into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.
Just watched the RRHOF Induction on HBO, first kudos for getting Sara Bareilles to sit in for Laura Nyro and for waiting for the Sax solo to put up the Big Man's photo during the memorial. It was weird transition after the Beasties tribute cutting to Carole King. Loved seeing GNR at it again even without Izzy and Axl, I am glad Matt Sorum played the tamborine while Steven Adler was on the kit.
Dreamt last night that they were making a Laura Nyro biopic detailing her marriage to James Taylor and how he ran off with Carole King...
