Warren Beatty ,THE LEGENDARY HOLLYWOOD PLAYER Warren Beatty was excellent at keeping his composure when he was rejected or when he ended a relationship; he never let his emotions get the best of him. For instance, his old flame Carly Simon seemed so disenchanted with Warren Beatty and his flick-of-the-switch “love ‘em and leave ‘em approach” that her hit single “You’re So Vain” was rumored to be about her disdain for Warren Beatty moving onto his next girlfriend, Natalie Wood. Warren’s response? “Thanks for the song,” and he then proceeded to charm the pants off Natalie Wood. No one really knows if the song was an allusion to the bed-hopping Beatty but, rest assured, Warren Beatty didn’t even flinch when it ended, a textbook example of moving on from an ex and also a great Player quality. Like a skilled ventriloquist, Warren Beatty managed to dangle his relationships in one hand and his acting career in other, and all over the course of a brilliant 40-year career in Hollywood, starti ...
Michael McDonald is 62 years old today. McDonald is known for a soulful baritone singing style. He began his career singing back-up vocals with Steely Dan. He became a member of The Doobie Brothers from 1976 to 1982, a period which resulted in several hit songs for the band. He has won five Grammy Awards. Born in St. Louis, McDonald played in several local bands while attending McCluer High School in his hometown of Ferguson, Missouri. He was discovered while playing with a group called Blue and consequently moved to Los Angeles in 1970. He also recorded some promo songs in the early 1970s which are now available on an album collectively called That Was Then. Michael McDonald became one of the many in-studio adjunct members of the group Steely Dan, providing back-up vocals on tracks for 1975's Katy Lied. He would return on subsequent Steely Dan recordings including 1976's The Royal Scam and 1977's Aja. He also played keyboards on some Steely Dan tracks. McDonald continued to do background vocals for Steel ...

GILBERT PRICE In 1962, Gilbert Price became my close companion. In 1961 my college roommate, Fernando Vargas, and I founded Variety Recording Studio on 46th Street in Manhattan. Marvin Hamlisch brought a teenage Liza Minnelli in as one of our first clients, recording the score for Best Foot Forward. Other of our clients included David Åmram, Jerry Bock, Irving Caesar, Sammy Cahn, Paddy Chayevsky, Chubby Checker, Bob Fosse, Lionel Hampton, Meadowlark Lemon, Barry Manilow, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, David Merrick, Arthur Miller, Odetta, Joseph Papp, Elvis Presley Music, Harold Prince, Tito Puente, Doc Severinsen, Carly Simon, Paul Simon, Sun Ra and His Arkestra, Tiny Tim, Sarah Vaughan, Gwen Verdon, Harold Wheeler, and Robert Whitehead. One day I thought I heard an aging Italian opera singer in Studio A and, because no group was booked for an hour, I entered to find Gilbert, a personable and sexy young black chap with a voice that had a timbre that reminded me of that of Paul Robeson. We made small talk, I ...

Listened to "Working Girl" while painting a bedroom. Of course it has young Melanie Griffith and Harrison Ford, but it also has Sigourney Weaver at her witchiest, and glimpses of baby-faced Kevin Stacey, Oliver Platt, and Alec Baldwin (playing - surprise - a jerk). And Joan Cusack in one of her earliest speaking parts as "the Rhoda." But the real feature is the Carly Simon soundtrack. "Let the River Run!"

Sometimes when I hear a song on the radio I think it is being sung especially for me. A psychiatric term for that phenomena is ideas of reference. One example, is the song You're So Vain by Carly Simon. I could swear she is singing about me in the song, I don't know why. Maybe it's my schizophrenia. Another example of that phenomena is Nowhere Man by the Beatles. When I heard them sing the song at Crosley Field in 1965 I could swear it was being sung in hopes I would hear it. It was hard to hear them sing the song over all the screams of the girls in the crowd. I found it hard to understand why all the girls were screaming. I know I must be crazy.

There was an entire album that influenced my music taste from 15-25 and that is 'What's Going On' By Marvin Gaye. That was the first concept album that covered the problems of the world in such a loving and understanding way. It still resonates loudly today and I play it a lot. War come in second and Minnie Ripperton is third. George Benson's 'White Rabbit' and everything from CTI Jazz. I must not leave out B.B. KIng, Bobby Blue Bland, The Impressions, Jerry Butler, Curtis Mayfield, The Isley Brothers and the band of all time, Earth, Wind and Fire, Ramsey Lewis, The Rolling Stones and Beatles, and The album from the play Jesus Christ Super Star. What a day for late 80s movies! I was beyond psyched for Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith in "Working Girl" this afternoon, and I even cried when Carly Simon broke into song after the final scene (Did I reveal too much?). It was followed by "Twins," which I did not get to watch, but it is still awesome that it was on. And now Jennifer Grey wearing her Keds on the dance floor with Swayze (I'm pretty sure I don't have to name that one!).

"Sometimes when you hear a song, you remember that you heard it in a particular movie. It may have been a background melody running throughout the picture, or sung more than once in the film. Here are ten such songs; can you name the movies?" 1. "Stayin' Alive" is one of the greatest hit songs to come out of the disco era. The tune was written by the brothers Gibb, Maurice, Barry and Robin, better known as The Bee Gees. The movie that made it famous was about a regular kid from Brooklyn, who became famous for his disco dancing in a club called "2001 Odyssey". Can you name this film which starred John Travolta? Any Given Sunday Saturday Night Fever Black Friday If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium 2. "As Time Goes By" has been recorded by many great artists. The star-studded list includes Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Carly Simon, Tony Bennett, and a great rendition by Jimmy Durante. DIED NOV 15 2011, Mark "Moogy" Klingman (September 7, 1950 – November 15, 2011) was an American musician and songwriter. He was a founding member of Todd Rundgren's band Utopia, and later became a solo recording artist, bandleader and songwriter. He released two solo recordings, and his songs have been covered by artists as wide ranging as Johnny Winter, Carly Simon, James Cotton, Thelma Houston, Eric Clapton, Barry Manilow and Guns N' Roses. He played on stage with Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Luther Vandross, Lou Reed, Jeff Beck and Allan Woody & Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule. Other than Rundgren, his longest musical association may have been with Bette Midler, whom he served as band leader and who adopted for her signature song "(You Gotta Have) Friends", composed by Klingman and William "Buzzy" Linhart

ON THIS DATE (41 YEARS AGO) November 3, 1972 - Carly Simon: No Secrets is released. # ALL THINGS MUSIC PLUS+ 4.5/5 # Allmusic 4.5/5 # Rolling Stone (see original review below) No Secrets is Carly Simon's third studio album, released on November 3, 1972. It spent five weeks at on the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart, and features the hit, "You're So Vain", which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks. Three Grammy nominations accompanied "You're So Vain" - Best Pop Female Vocalist, Song Of The Year, and Record Of The Year. You're So Vain is ranked at on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All-Time. Carly Simon's third album, 1972's No Secrets, was her best-selling release ever, thanks to the inclusion of the huge hit single "You're So Vain." Speculation persists over the identity of the person so deftly skewered in this song (Simon's been quoted as saying that while there are elements of various people in the lyrics, "there's nothing there that isn't true of Warren Beatty"), to such an extent that the ex ...

Carly Simon wrote "You're So Vain," in 1972. John Mayer wasn't born until 1977, but he's so vain, he thinks the song was written about him.

Me and Tiana listened to Gordan Lightfoots music today, than we met with Maurine who is always a pleasure to meet with. We like listening to Gordon Lightfoots songs. When we go shopping or when Tiana brings me to other places we either listen to Carly Simon or Gordon Lightfoot. We talk about how the songs get stuck in our heads and we laugh. Coming Around Again by Carly Simon gets stuck in my head and plays over and over again. I am still not tired of it. I probably listened to that song 10,000 times by now. That is one song I think I will never get tired of.
Patrick Carney This week in Rock n' Roll History (1976) – The Song Remains the Same, a film that mixes Led Zeppelin performance footage with some rather dubious Lord of the Rings-style sequences, premieres in Manhattan. Jimmy Page says of the screening before guests like *** Jagger and Carly Simon, “the film lived for the first time and you could see people getting off on things, applauding and laughing at the right times, generally vibing.” Leonard Maltin says, “Even without the stereo sound, film will still clean out all eight sinus cavities.” The filming took place during three nights of concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with additional footage shot at Shepperton Studios due to cameramen's. The film premiered on 20 October 1976, at Cinema I in New York and at Warner West End Cinema in London two weeks later. It was accompanied by a soundtrack album of the same name. The DVD of the film was released on 31 December 1999. Promotional materials stated that the film was "the ban ...

This is my dad and the young *** Jagger, in 1964. My father and aunt were a duo team in the industry for all of you that didn't know, Their stage name was Inez & Charlie Foxx. One of their most popular songs was Mockingbird, written by Charlie for his sister Inez as a nursery rhyme and got heard thru radio in those times and in early 1963, the pair introduced themselves to Henry "Juggy" Murray, the owner of Sue Records, and sang him their arrangement of the traditional lullaby "Hush, Little Baby". The song, re-titled "Mockingbird", was released in 1963 and made the Top 10 on both the US rhythm and blues and pop charts. It was their most successful record, and was later covered by artists including Aretha Franklin, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Dusty Springfield, Etta James with Taj Mahal, Eminem and Toby Keith. The record company, keen to promote Inez Foxx as a solo singer, issued later recordings under her name alone, despite the presence of two voices on the records. Perhaps because "Mockingbird" was seen ...

I was sincerely hoping for a Pirates - Red Sox World Series. It would have been the first time since 1903 that they'd met up - and that would have been too cool for words. I was looking forward to trading schoolyard barbs with several Pirates fans I happen to know. Alas, it was not to be. The Bucs had a fantastic season - and all their fans were delirious with joy and I'm sad their buzz is over for the year - but it was a great ride! Good luck next year, guys - and in the immortal words of Carly Simon, "For those who play the game / It's coming 'round again". Go Bucs!
Dear High school kids sitting next to me in traffic, I want to answer your questions. No, I was not embarrassed that you heard me singing to the top of my lungs. As to what kind of music this "crazy old lady" was listening to- it was Carly Simon you silly Miley Cyrus listening fools! Don't bother looking her up though. You're to green behind your ears to 'get it'. And lastly, yes I do think I'm cool. Don't mess with me because I will chew you up and spit you out!! That is all thank you;)
No shame-- LOVED this song in the 90s and just rediscovered it. Classic Carly Simon. via
How did I go to bed watching Indiana Jones, and wake up with a Carly Simon song stuck in my head?
This is the third hit version of this song and one of the best. The year is only 1959 and this cover has already been preceded by one by Ben Selvin in 1934 and one by Peggy Lee in 1950. Johnny Mathis, *** Hucknall, Carly Simon, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel will go on to cover this song, amongst others. This is a quality song, make no mistake.

Here's an excerpt from the liner notes of Jimmy Webb's beautiful new record "Still Within The Sound Of My Voice" that i appear on w/ Brian Wilson, Lyle Lovett, Crosby and Nash, Carly Simon and a "holy host of others." I was so moved to read what Jimmy wrote. Man...even his LINER NOTES make me cry! 8 ANOTHER LULLABY Guest appearance: MARC COHN Before the legendary Bottom Line in the village succumbed to financial woes, it was considered a prime venue by performers for its sound, dingy chic and usually crowded bar and showroom. It was there that writer and singer Marc Cohn first performed one of my songs, “If These Walls Could Speak”, around 2000. It was good. It sounded right. I drew this man close because of his sincerely humble demeanor and extraordinary gifts both as a writer of such gems as “Walkin’ In Memphis” and “Silver Thunderbird”. It gives me the shivers to just think about these songs. As a singer with an enviable patina, a gentle roughness that embraces elements of Cocker and Ray ...

A really cool perspective of the WUG Opening Ceremonies from a writer that makes you think of the impact on the Athletes, and beyond them to the World. Enjoy. A Writer Takes A Wondrous Walk on the World Stage By Steve Kelley, USA Team Columnist KAZAN, Russia (July 6, 2013) – Maybe it was the wall of sound that hit me, when I marched through the tunnel and into the blissful cacophony of Kazan Arena. Or maybe it was the kaleidoscope of bright colors, the reds and blues and yellows and whites that rolled down like psychedelic waves from the highest reaches of this new jewel of a soccer stadium, that for this one night, was changed into a senses-overloading swirl of light and sound and whirling, human motion. But there was almost something transforming about participating in Saturday night (and Sunday morning’s) Opening Ceremonies for the World University Games. It was an inspiring night. GREENWICH VILLAGE: MUSIC THAT DEFINED A GENERATION Director: Laura Archibald Featuring poignant interviews with Pete Seeger, Kris Kristofferson, Don McLean, Peter Yarrow, Arlo Guthrie, Lucy and Carly Simon, Tom Chapin and Judy Collins, among dozens of other music luminaries, GREENWICH VILLAGE: MUSIC THAT DEFINED A GENERATION combines talking heads with rare archival footage and new live performances to tell a story about a community that created a generation-defining music. Greenwich Village was the birthplace of the singer/songwriter and songs of love and relationships. Between 1961-1973, many musicians in The Village banded together to sing about the radical social upheaval of the time. As these new singers emerged, Greenwich blossomed as a place that promoted a better future. Their music challenged the status quo by singing about taboo subjects - fighting for civil liberties, protesting the Vietnam War, and holding governments accountable for their actions. Their views, which were controversial at th ...

Thanks to cancellations, I suddenly have a shorter than normal workday. Time for celeb birthdays: June Lockhart is still "Lost In Space" at 88; Carly Simon still thinks you're so vain at 68; Jimmie walker has a DYN-OM-MITE birthday at 66; Tim Finn of Crowded House is 61; Sonia Sotomayor acts all judicial for Ricky "The Office Gervais blows out 52 candles, while Angela "The Office Kinsey blows out 42; and finally Busy Phillips of Cougar Town is 34 (don't get why people find that show funny). Happy Birthday to one and all!
