Parents and today is the day we celebrate our fathers let me tell you about mine – As long as I can remember back I have always looked at my father as a larger than life figure – I was a small child and he was 6’4” and had a deep voice. This is when I started to look up to him. As I grew and had many learning disabilities and personality traits that many did not understand –hey most still do not today - lol He loved me unconditionally and stood behind me no matter what – PERIOD. He coached one of the most un-coordinated human beings alive and made me feel like Carl Yastrzemski, Bobby Orr, Steve Grogan or Larry Bird. He taught me how to love others even though they could not be loved. He taught me the joy of family and friends. He taught me to always have my hand up to ...

On This Day in Baseball History. 1976. At Tiger Stadium, Carl Yastrzemski passes Boston legend Ted Williams for the most games played in a Red Sox uniform. Yaz makes the historic day memorable by going 4-for-4, including three home runs, in the BoSox 9–2 victory in the Motor City.
is 68 home runs from tying Carl Yastrzemski for 2nd most home runs in history (452). Ted Williams tops (521).
More George Brett: 1993 One day before his 40th birthday, George Brett hits his 300th career home run, joining Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, Carl Yastrzemski, Willie Mays and Al Kaline as the only players with three hundred homers and three thousand hits. The Royals' third baseman's historic ball is picked up by a fan on a veterans' hospital outing who happens to be blind.
David Ortiz now has more homers with the Red Sox than Dwight Evans. Trails only Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice.
Milestone Update: With 2 hits today Derek Jeter passes Paul Moliter on the All-time hits leaderboard. He is now 9th with 3,320. Next closest is Carl Yastrzemski with 3,419.
Derek Jeter just got his 3,319th career hit, the same as Paul Molitor. This means that Pete Rose, Hank Aaron and Carl Yastrzemski are now the only living humans with more hits than Jeter.
3 hits to tie Paul Molitor, 103 for Carl Yastrzemski, 104 for Honus Wagner & 119 behind the disputed Cap Anson total.
In 1967, Carl Yastrzemski won baseball's Triple Crown, batting .326 with 44 home runs and 121 RBIs to lead the American League in all three categories. While that was considered an impressive feat at the time, it wasn't exactly a shocking one, given that Frank Robinson had just accomplished it the previous year and Triple Crown seasons by Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams weren't that far in the rearview mirror. There were a lot of close calls, but it took 45 years for someone to take Yaz's mantle as the most recent Triple Crown winner. As 100 percent of you reading this recall, that someone was Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, who pulled off the feat in 2012. In 2014, Cabrera -- whom our BBTN100 panel ranked as the best first baseman in the game -- has a chance to do something even rarer: win it a second time. And those chances ain't half bad. A second Triple Crown is something only two players in baseball history have successfully accomplished, Williams and Rogers Hornsby. You may have heard of those ...
Doubling down: Detroit Tigers to pay Cabrera $292 million over 10 years The contract is subject to a physical, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been announced. Miguel Cabrera is due $44 million over the final two years of his $152.3 million, eight-year contract that runs through 2015, and the person says the slugger will make $248 million over eight seasons in the new deal. "Baseball loves guaranteeing ridiculous amounts of money and years to players well past their primes and girding for the steep decline that accompanies them in their mid 30s all the way through their 40s. This is written off as the cost of doing business, which is an insult to the business." -Jeff Passan, Yahoo Sports writer The Venezuelan slugger won the Triple Crown in 2012 — becoming the first player to lead either league in batting average, homers and RBIs since 1967, when Boston's Carl Yastrzemski pulled off the rare feat. Cabrera followe ...
"There can be little doubt that Carl Yastrzemski was the master of Wall-ball defense. An infielder as a collegian at Notre Dame, (Carl) Yastrzemski had the coordination, the instincts, and the work ethic to make the Wall work for him. He was among the American League's outfield assist leaders annually until baserunners learned to stop going for two when they clanged one off the Wall. Yaz could decoy better than any outfielder and routinely pretended he was ready to catch a ball that he knew was going to carom off the Wall. Sometimes this would make runners slow down or stop altogether. Yaz had another Wall habit that annoyed some Boston pitchers. When a slugger unloaded on a meatball from a Sox hurler, Yaz would sometimes stand motionless, hands on hips, staring forward as the ball sailed over his head, over the screen, and out toward the Mass. Turnpike. He didn't want to give the hitter the satisfaction of turning around, and sometimes it was a message to a Boston pitcher who may have thrown the wrong pi ...
To Honor of America's greatest game and national pastime, I offer you 10 of the greatest baseball one-liners ever muttered (in no particular order) ... Get you *** back there! The only thing you know about pitching is that you can't hit it. -- Pitching great Bob Gibson to his catcher Tim McCarver when McCarver approached him on the mound. Asked how he pitched to the Yankee great Mickey Mantle, Red Sox Pitcher Frank Sullivan answered "With tears in my eyes." "I told him I wasn’t tired; he told me, ‘No, but the outfielders sure are.’" Pitcher Jim Kern, when the manager came to the mound to remove him from a game. "The good Lord was good to me. He gave me a strong body, a good right arm, and a weak mind." Pitching great Dizzy Dean "Ed, you're the second best umpire in the league… the other twenty-three are tied for first." Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski, "Yaz", to umpire Ed Runge "I didn't do so great in the first grade either." --- Pitcher Dizzy Dean, on dropping out of school after the second gra ...
Lot of 14 Baseball/Football/Basketball cards. There are a lot of big name stars, Hall Of Fame, and rookie players in this lot which include Carl Yastrzemski, Ken Griffey Jr., Michael Jordan, Chris Webber, Julius Erving, Gene Upshaw, Fran Tarkenton, Rollie Fingers, Joe Montana, Mark McGwire, Alex Rodriguez, and Drew Bledsoe. I have priced this lot at $30.00 which is under their book value. Pick up is near South HamiIton Rd and Winchester Pike. I am also interested in buying silver coins if anyone is interested in selling. I am a local collector and I pay more than any Cash For Gold store. Those places are a scam and only pay a fraction of what the silver is worth, whereas I pay 100% of the spot price of silver. I will also show you what the value of silver content is and show you what I am paying which is 100% of the spot for silver. Thanks for looking.
In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure. Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, John Elway, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Carl Yastrzemski, Nolan Ryan, Mia Hamm, Lionel Messi, Lindsey Vonn, Bonnie Blair, these are just a few of the greatest names in sports history, and not one of these world class athletes won every time they suited up. Instead, they took the things they learned from a loss and applied it to the next contest. And because of that lack of fear and desire to succeed, they will forever walk the earth as Champions!
After much deliberation, I've finalized my Boston Red Sox Mount Rushmore: Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk & Big Papi. Really struggled over leaving off Wade Boggs, but riding that horse at Yankee Stadium and then wanting to go into Cooperstown wearing a Tampa Bay Rays cap sent me over the edge. (editor's note: as usual, my dad Paul Davis is right. My list is amended to Ted, Yaz, Papi & Jim Rice.)

This Day in Baseball History -- from Mary Landers ... It was 111 years ago today -- On Feb. 21, 1903, Hall of Fame owner Tom Yawkey is born in Detroit. Yawkey will purchase the Boston Red Sox in 1933 at the age of 30 and overturn the club's status as a perennial second-division doormat. Although the Sox will never win the big one during Yawkey's 44 years in charge, they will go to the World Series three times and develop Hall-of-Famers like Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski.
Today's hits masters, we turn back the baseball clock to the year of 1967 and the American League. Here are the top 3 total hits for that season 1. Carl Yastrzemski -189 2. Cesar Tovar -173 3. Jim Fregosi -171 George "Boomer" Scott -171
Joseph Anthony "Joe" Foy (February 21, 1943 – October 12, 1989) was a Major League Baseball third baseman. Born in New York City, Foy was signed as an amateur free agent by the Minnesota Twins in 1962, but was selected in that year's minor league draft by the Boston Red Sox. Playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the International League in 1965, Foy was voted the league's most valuable player and rookie of the year. He also won the league's batting title, hitting .302. His first year in the majors, with Boston in 1966, was arguably his best season. Foy batted a solid .262, drew the second-most walks in the American League (91), had a .364 on-base percentage, good for eighth in the junior circuit; he also scored 97 runs, fifth in the league. As pitching became more dominant in the late 1960s, Foy's numbers dropped considerably. In 1967, while receiving over 100 fewer at-bats, Foy batted a slightly worse .251/.325/.426 (his walk total halved), although the league did drop by 4 batting points, 2 on-base p ...

Looking forward to the 2014 MLB season, I have decided to compose a fantasy baseball team. In making my selections, I used the following criteria; First, I only chose players who played during MY modern era (‘50s forward); Second, any player linked to PEDs was excluded; Third, players must be not just good hitters or fielders, but be proficient at both. Fourth, also used for consideration was all-star selections, golden gloves and other achievement awards such as Triple Crowns. While I’ll admit to having some prejudices, I tried very hard to be objective in my selections. I realize that their will be many differences of opinions, if you want to suggest a different player(s), feel free to do so as long as you say who you would then omit and also state your reasons. This should be fun and interesting. STARTING PITCHERS (4) Roger Clemens, Greg Maddox, Randy Johnson, Tom Glavine RELIEF PITCHERS (5) Mariano Rivera, Dennis Eckersley, Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers, Bruce Sutter CATCHER (2) Yogi ...

Let's take the time out to wish Pro Football Hall of Famer and long time actor Jim Brown a happy birthday today! James Nathaniel Brown (born 02/17/1936) was born to Theresa (a housekeeper) and Swinton Brown (a professional boxer). At Manhasset Secondary School, Brown earned 13 letters playing football, lacrosse, baseball, basketball and running track. According to the New York Times: Mr. Brown credits his self-reliance to having grown up on Saint Simons Island, a community off the coast of Georgia where he was raised by his grandmother and where racism did not affect him directly. At the age of eight, he moved to Manhasset, N.Y., where his mother worked as a domestic. It was at Manhasset High School that he became a football star and athletic legend. He averaged a then-Long Island record 38 points per game for his basketball team. That record was later broken by future Boston Red Sox star Carl Yastrzemski of Bridgehampton. As a sophomore at Syracuse University, Brown was the second leading rusher on the t ...

For those of you who Remember Will McEnenay of the Big Red Machine. He was one of their good relief pitchers. He turns 62 today. This is what he is up to these days: JUPITER — The Cincinnati Reds arrive in Miami on Monday for a four-game series against the Marlins. But Will McEnaney won't be there. McEnaney, who lives in Royal Palm Beach, has a special place in Reds history: He recorded the final outs of the Big Red Machine's World Series clinchers in 1975 and '76. But the retired reliever will be working his night job — in the scoreboard booth at Roger Dean Stadium. While the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads take on the Bradenton Marauders, the left-hander who once flipped curveballs past Carl Yastrzemski will flip switches on the electronic scoreboard, recording every ball, strike, hit and run.
The temperature is 76 and 40% humidity at Fenway Park today, Apr. 20, 2012, and Clay Buchholz is about to take the mound for the Boston Red Sox against Derek Jeter who's leading off for the New York Yankees. Carl Beane is once again alive and well, behind the mic as the voice of Fenway. The best ballpark in the history of baseball is being celebrated for it's centennial today. Johnny Pesky is in the house, as is Carl Yastrzemski and countless other legends. This game won't go quite our way, nor will the season, but it's a beautiful spring day on my DVR. The snow outside doesn't exist for the next three hours. Life is good.
The way I figure it . Derek Jeter could finish ahead of Carl Yastrzemski in 6th place as the all time hits leaders . Right behind Tris Speaker . Pretty good company.
Moving to left field in my best I've seen list: 3) Willie Stargell 2) Ricky Henderson 1) Carl Yastrzemski I'm not putting Barry Bonds on any list, or Manny Ramirez.
So this is it. Was kind of hoping he'd try for 4,000 hits, and then who knows, maybe 4,257. But 2014 will be his last season - loved watching Jeter all these years - the truest of professional athletes in every way. With a little luck, he could finish his career with the fifth most hits ever, in significantly fewer at bats and at a significantly younger age than all those he will finish behind. 1. Pete Rose 4256 B 2. Ty Cobb+ 4189 L 3. Hank Aaron+ 3771 R 4. Stan Musial+ 3630 L 5. Tris Speaker+ 3514 L 6. Cap Anson+ 3435 R 7. Honus Wagner+ 3420 R 8. Carl Yastrzemski 3419 L 9. "When I go to the plate now, I'm thinking only one thing: I'm thinking to hit every pitch out of the ballpark. Put it this way: I'm going down swinging. If a pitcher gets me out I'll tip my cap to him." Carl Yastrzemski (with 10 games left in the season)
So I says to my girl "honey the Bruins won 7-2 and Carl Yastrzemski had a hat-trick". She says " oh wow he's still playing".. LMAO... Funny thing is, she watches the Bruins all the time!! Gutta Love her!!!
I am looking to trade for a Carl Yastrzemski certified autograph (around $60 BV). Please let me know if you have one. Thank you.
The Sigismontes lived behind the Nathaniel Woodhull School. The neighborhood gang spent many years playing ball at the south-east corner of that school. There was a summer kid, named Larry, who lived down the block from the Sigismontes. His mother spoke broken English [Italian-American]. She was always afraid to let Larry go out and play. One day we convinced her that he would be fine. So Larry proudly went with us to play baseball. Well one of us hit a high fly ball. Think of the movie "Sandlot." Larry enthusiastically lined up with that high fly ball, and got hit right in the eye. We didn't see Larry for a long time. BTW - At the west entrance to Nathaniel Woodhull School, there was a house. I thought that odd. The kid who lived there was named Freddy Iozzino [nice guy]. But his father wouldn't let him play ball with us - he didn't want him to pick up bad habits. Perhaps he was right; but we sure had fun in our own way. We impersonated all the of baseball's greats: Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Willie May ...
How times have changed. Imagine a game played by Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Joe Torre, Willie McCovey, Johnny Bench, Rod Carew, Brooks Robinson, Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bobby Bonds, Bobby Mercer, Carl Yastrzemski, Frank Robinson, Norm Cash, Vida Blue, Jim Palmer, Andy Messersmith, Wilbur Wood, Al Kaline, Amos Otis, Harmon Killebrew, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Frank Howard, and coached by Billy Martin and Sparky Anderson. All heroes to a generation, and virtually all first-round members of the Hall of Fame. Forty years from now, how many names will you remember from the 2013 MLB All-Star Game? Probably not many.
